DVD playback is poor on quality Sony and Panasonic players-jagged horizontals are particularly noticeable. Top quality Verbatim DVD-R discs used. Ideas please?

I'm new to Mac and have not regretted the move from the "other side" until now. I produce many DVDs of slideshows and movies which are frequently shown at public venues or are given to friends and organisations so quality is very important. So far all attempts at producing a DVD free of "jaggies" and other artefacts have failed, the results not being acceptable even when viewed on 22 inch LCD TVs.
The projects have been created using iMovie which produces excellent quality Quicktime files perfectly watchable on large HD screens or projectors fed from a notebook (and a windows one at that!)
I have burned the DVDs on the iMac internal Optiarc drive and an external LG one with the same poor results.
No similar problems experienced over many years of using Adobe Premiere, Cyberlink and WNsoft software. In fact many audiences have commented on the near broadcast quality of the productions.
Am I preparing the files wrongly in iDVD or do I have to seek out alternative authoring/burning software (not so easy with Mac of course) ? I have Final Cut Express 4 on the Mac also but wanted to cut my teeth on iMovie first.
Any help will be most welcome.
Stuart

Hi
Still one has to know that DVDs can only be SD-video (it's a standard) any program used.
But You can get a better result by using iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any version as they can deliver intrelaced video over to iDVD (or Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro) - this will not discard every second line as iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 does.
You might also try to use FotoMagico™ to make SlideShows as this also results in as high quality possibly.
If You need even better then consider
• Blu-Ray (Roxio Toast™ Pro bundle incl. BD-component) - Short BD movies on standard DVD disks (BUT neeed Blu-ray player to be viewed (no not on any standard Mac either))
• Save to Memory stick and Playback on PlayStation 3

Gift cards can only be used in the country in which they are purchased - so in order to use a US gift card you would need to have a US iTunes account.

  • Is the DVD playback of poor quality?

I'm still miffed by the quality of the dvd playback. We have dvd players both in a pc, xbox, ps2 and stand along units. Yet somehow the one on my imac looks really rough. Is this more down to the really new hardware? I still have have the same full screen dvd playback glitch on my replaced intel imac so dont know where to turn to.

I don't think the problem is the dvd player, but the resolution of the monitor. When you stream hi def trailers, it looks awsome. The resolution of the mac monitor is higher than a hi def television. You are not seeing a limitation of the hardware, but the limitation of the source dvd itself. My cable company has some analog channels mixed in with the digital ones and a hi def tv will make a bad picture look worse. The highest settings on hi def tv's is 1080. If you look at the display settings on the mac, you are at 1440. That's a significant difference.

  • AVCHD camcorders from sony and panasonic

Is there any software right now that supports this format? The video is compressed in mpeg-4 avc/h.264 and the file extension is .m2ts. Will apple release a program that supports this formats?

still no support...ok, thanks for the confirm.
Is there someway to play/export .m2ts in windows? I have Sony AVHDC viewer software for windows, but it only reads from AVHDC discs..not the hard drive.
Yes, If I was doin it, i would capture the footage with FCP. But in this particular instance, the .m2ts are being supplied by the client. In other instances, he supplied .m2t files, which I handled with mpegstreamclip fine. but these .m2ts files are trickier.

can anybody help with my problem please..as posted above..thanks

It's not a daft question . Feel free to ask about anything iMac-related and you're bound to get help on here.
What Mac do you have and how much RAM. You could try reseating the chips, or if you have enough RAM try pulling chips out and testing via a process of elimination.

  • HT5654 Hi my wife has a 2008 iPod Touch which has not been used for at least 5 years.  It will not charged and I have tried to carry out a DFU with out any result.  Any ideas please?

Hi my wife has a 2008 iPod Touch which she has not used for approximately 5 years.  It will not charge and I have tried to carry out a Device Firmware Upgrade to no effect.  Can anyone please help?

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
    - Then try on another computer

  • Annoying video/DVD playback problems on new Mac mini (2010)

I have a Mac mini at home right now, latest edition (2010).
I am very surprised to find that DVD playback exhibits signs of stutters here and there. Not huge stutters, but I can constantly see small "skips" and what seems like frame drops here and there. Playing back the same DVD on a $120 Blu-ray-player shows no sign of this behaviour.
I have tried this on two different TV sets (one 720p and one 1080p), and the mini is not able to play back a DVD without these stutters/skips. Two different blu-ray players play the disc just fine (I have been using Ghost Dog to test - check chapter to and the scenes containing panning, it's easier to notice that way).
It seems ordinary video files playback (files from HD, 720p, mkv) exhibit some of the same behaviour, though this seems more dependent on which app is used for playback. Quicktime seems worse (noticeable stutters/skips), VLC 1.1 a bit better (though both DVD playback and file playback show signs of stutter), while XBMC is the best of the three, with very little frame drop (if that is in fact what it is).
Any idea what's going on here? Why will such a expensive machine with HDMI output not play back video properly, while a cheap Blu-ray-player does it just fine?
    Are there any known issues?
(sorry for posting this in the wrong from earlier!)

I have not used the dvd player app in my 2010 mini, but I've certainly played every media type under the sun since receiving it.
It plays them all without dropping frames, stuttering, pausing, etc.
Are you using dvd player with dvd disc images, video ts folders, or actual DVD discs in the drive?
If you're playing a disc image or video ts folder, are you accessing them over wireless networking? If so, try them on the internal drive, or over a wired network connection.
Try turning off the option is in energy saver that allows drive sleep (system sleep can stay where it is, just turn off *hard drive* sleep).
For best performance, make sure you aren't running other apps besides the media player app that you're using at the time.
Make sure you don't have software or utilities running background tasks (such as disk warrior, drive genius or tech tool pro).
If you have external devices connected (including printer and/or scanner), try the system without them connected. Does the video playback improve without them connected? If it does, then try reconnecting them one by one to figure out which one of them is related to the problem.

  • DVD Playback oddities Intel Versus PPC

OK, here's a strange DVD Player problem. I've got a copy of "Pinky & The Brain Volume 1" that plays perfectly in my ridiculously cheap $29 DVD player on my TV plus perfectly ok in my iMac G5.
The exact same disks refuse point blank to play in my new Macbook Pro. They do not show up in Finder and DVD Player will not play them. DVD Player picks up on the fact that its a DVD but then claims that there is no way to play it.
    Anyone has any thoughts?

OK I resolved this although I am at a loss to understand why.
I ran a "repair permissions" that repaired nothing whatsoever. Following repair permissions DVD playback worked perfectly. Strange, odd and definitely makes no sense but there we have it.

  • DSR30 and Panasonic DV186 tapes

    Hi all,
I've been trying to capture a Panasonic DV186 tape using a Sony DSR30, but FCP keeps stopping the capture. The error message says there is a problem with the tape, but there isn't. Is there a problem with FCP, the DSR30 and Panasonic tapes? Is there a setting I'm missing? We usually use DVCAM tapes with no problems. Thanks!

    John:
Most probably some lack of compatibility. Some time ago we filmed an event with my Panasonic DVX-100 and a SONY as second camera. I tried to capture the Sony tapes in my Panasonic and no matter there was no error message, the video was captured with random errors.
I finally had to sak for the SONY and capture directly from it.
This happens sometime, and I heard the same stories here from time to time.

  • Canon Vixia HG20 - movies are loaded, but too large for DVD - help?

Hi, my HD camera uploads the movies just fine to iMovie 08. My problem now is, because they're in HD they are ginormous files. I can't even get 4 minutes of video onto one DVD!
Is there a magic way to convert or compress these HD files into regular DVD format? Do I have to get a new software to make this happen? I'm googling like crazy and just getting more and more confused.
Or should I just make everything a smaller file, for viewing on an ipod or youtube and put it all on a DVD?
I'm really frustrated and confused! Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi
4 minutes to much - then You got problems.
    a. iDVD doesn't care about GBs at all only duration of movie + menu
    b. iDVD is very hard disk hungry - and only eats the internal/boot drive
so free space on other hard disks doesn't count
The internal/boot drive should have 25Gb or more free space.
    c. No version of iDVD do HD-video - only SD (old time TV resolution)
There are no iDVD HD version out here yet.
alt. is to use Roxio Toast™ which if bougt as Pro incl. BR-component can burn to
a Blue-Ray burner and Disk (AND Small porojects on reg. DVDs - about 20-30 minutes)
BUT - These BR-disks or DVD (BR-coded) Can't be played on DVD-players or Macs
only on BR-players eg PlayStation 3
If it still don't work - see my list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions
