DVD playback on a MAC - help!

Hello,
To be honest I'm not too sure if my post should be in here or in the Encore forum.
The problem I'm having is whislt a compiled encore DVD is being tested on a Mac. After each video is watched it is set up to return to main menu screen, but for 2 out of 7 videos - when the end of the 2 videos is reached, they are resetting the time counter back to 0 then continuing to play for a further 40 seconds on a freeze-framed image and then returns back to the main menu.
I've gone back to the video project itself in premiere to see if the problem lies there, but can't find anything obvious, all the fps for the videos within the project are 25 as is the project settings.
I've had a look in the timelines for the 2 videos in Encore, but can't see any markers that would indicate that it is to do something else before it returns back to the main menu.
Anyone had the same problem or know why it is doing this? Like I say it's fine on other players (PCs, DVD players, PS3, windows meida player, Cineplayer, etc), I'm only seeing this problem on a MAC and only 2 videos out the 7 on the DVD are doing this. The DVD player on the MAC is the standard DVD player which come pre-installed on the machines when bought with a DVD drive.
Many thanks for peoples help in advance! Mel.

Hello Hunt. How are you today?
I spent a bit of time yesterday looking into free players for the MAC that I test on, the OS its running is OSX 10.3.9. Though it may seem foolish to have an old machine, it's actually quite useful to test your developments on fast, capable computers and also the slow, older machines. It's tricky to know what age machines schools will have, as the LAs (Local Authorities) for schools all have different budgets and priorities.
Anyway, I couldn't find a free player to install for this version OS I'm running. Not one that would work anyway! I did download the VLC player, which I hear quite a few people rave about (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). Once installed; it opened fine, but then as it tried to read and play the DVD - it quit the program! So, no luck there either.
My colleagues MAC which is less than 12 months old, I'll try and organise a time to test on that one with a different player. Unfortunately, we're now getting ready for a big annual show we're exhibiting at, at the start of January. So I'm not going to get time to do this until after the show now. Unless of course I buy my shiny new MAC this Friday! Then I'll be able to investigate sooner.
I've sent the DVD to the replicators today! It works perfectly in every way apart from this one thing on a MAC computer, and it been thoroughly tested on 8 machines (all with different set ups! PC & vista, PC & XP, powerDVD, Cineplayer, DVD player & TV, PS3, MAC & old OS, MAC & new OS etc.) by 4 people. We haven't anymore time to allow the development to set back the delivery date from the replicators It was a joint decision to send it; but I think at the back of my mind I'm going to die from the stress!! I will take no news as good news, if the technical support email address recieves no emails and the phone doesn't ring... I'm convinced by the time I turn 27 on the 11th, I'll have a grey hair!
Still, I am determined to find out why this happening and the fix for it. I'm going, in the next couple of days to try my luck in the Premiere forum and see if the problem lies within the video project. I find it coincidental that it's only happening on the two videos which end with titles and a filter. Perhaps the utility DVD player on MACs read titles in a way that such a thing is a result of how it reads it. Perhaps it's to do with how the title is being applied within the video project. Maybe there's a title setting that needs adjusting in the Encore project for the DVD. I don't know, but surely there has to be an answer somewhere and surely I can't be the only person having this issue.
I'll keep you posted with any new posts and send a link to the new post when I get round to it.
Thanks for sticking around and helping out - a very frustrated Mel.
PS, are you in the US or the UK? Either way hope you had a nice thanks giving, or equally, hope you have a nice Christmas!

  • Optimizing dvd playback quality (macroblocking problems)- HELP!

Nothing is quite so frustrating as spending countless hours editing, encoding, and authoring a DVD and then discovering that the video has playback issues (macroblocking, digital artifacting, sometimes so serious it halts playback altogether) at some point in the stream.
I feel sure others must have some idea what I'm talking about, and yet I haven't found a thread on this forum or any other that addresses what is really the root cause here. As I figure it, there are a number of factors (variables) at work:
    1. the media itself
    2. the software used to create the disc (in my case DVDSP 4.0/Compressor usually at the "Best" quality encoding)
    3. the hardware used to burn the disc (in my case the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 superdrive in my powerbook)
    4. the DVD player used for playback
In my experience, a disc might do fine on one player but then have significant playback issues on another. On one occasion I even saw playback perfectly through an hour of video, and then the next day on the same player and the same DVD I got significant macroblocking through parts of it.
What gives!? Are there some DVD-R media that are way better than others? Or do I need to invest in a better drive to burn them? Or is this just the growing pains of emerging technology? Is there some other thread anywhere in cyberspace that addresses this issue?

    Hi John
So you're saying that your mpegs are clean and clear of any macro blocking, and this is only introducted once you burn to DVD, and then only on some players, but also a disc that played fine one day on a deck, plays back bad the next day on the same deck.
Man, you've got some serious gremlins at work in your office. Before you pull your system apart, chack you mpegs again. If you're using Compressor 2 with any of the VBR presets you're going to get macro blocking because C2's VBR is not very good - I've not had one successful mpeg out of it. If your project is under 1hr try CBR at 7.5Mbps, that's been working fine for me.
Now, are you encoding your audio to .ac3, or .aiff. If you're using .aiff you might be hitting wall with your bitrate. Your .aiff will have a bitrate of 1.5Mbps, and if your using using a high max bitrate on your vision and you get a bitrate spike which Compressor is also known for then you could be blowing your bit budget (max of 9.8Mbps for vision and audio together), which could result in stuttered playback and freezes.
Next, are you burning out of DVDSP or are you using Toast. Some users report problems burning at higher than 2x speed (personally I burn at the limit of the media and haven't had a problem). As you can't control the burn speed out of DVDSP you might want to try just building in DVDSP and burning in toast at a low speed.
If you're burning from data on an external FW drive try moving it to the HD and try it again.
Try a few different brands of media. Keep it clean and out of the sun.
That's about all I can tell you at the moment - these are all the obvious things , maybe somone else can chime in with some more obscure causes.
    Cheers

  • Help! dvd won't play in dvd player or on mac!

this is my first imovie creation. it's just a slideshow in imovie, that i've exported to idvd to burn onto a dvd. i have an external dvd burner, so i am saving as a disc image, and burning the file that creates. the problem is, once i burn the disc, the dvd does not work in my dvd player, on my mac, anywhere!
i've never done this before, but i think i have all the settings correct. should i be doing something other than burning that disc image file? many thanks for any answers or help!!!

    not on my dvd player
Your player would be considered pre-historic by today's DVD standards. I had a Sony of that age, which I gave to my neighbor. My friend had the same model and some of my DVDs played while others didn't. Seemed it didn't like some brands, like TDK. Since you're new to this, I'll give you the following "blurb" that should help you make some media decisions. You can take your DVD to a store and try it and buy a new player. I'd avoid Toshiba based on my experience with friend's players...
My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), RiTek 4X; Verbatim 1-8X, RiData 8X, and PioData 8X, all white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData checked out to be RiTek-made.
Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.
You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:
    http://www.shop4tech.com/
Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood Office Depot store, or:
    http://www.taperesources.com/
    http://www.newegg.com/
Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.
You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html
b Here's some discussion about formats: http://www.macintouch.com/dvdproblems5.html#oct03 Be sure to read Joel Lingenfelter's experience
    Here's a great site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
    Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
    Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x
This can result in "mixed" experiences...
My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Annoying video/DVD playback problems on new Mac mini (2010)

I have a Mac mini at home right now, latest edition (2010).
I am very surprised to find that DVD playback exhibits signs of stutters here and there. Not huge stutters, but I can constantly see small "skips" and what seems like frame drops here and there. Playing back the same DVD on a $120 Blu-ray-player shows no sign of this behaviour.
I have tried this on two different TV sets (one 720p and one 1080p), and the mini is not able to play back a DVD without these stutters/skips. Two different blu-ray players play the disc just fine (I have been using Ghost Dog to test - check chapter to and the scenes containing panning, it's easier to notice that way).
It seems ordinary video files playback (files from HD, 720p, mkv) exhibit some of the same behaviour, though this seems more dependent on which app is used for playback. Quicktime seems worse (noticeable stutters/skips), VLC 1.1 a bit better (though both DVD playback and file playback show signs of stutter), while XBMC is the best of the three, with very little frame drop (if that is in fact what it is).
Any idea what's going on here? Why will such a expensive machine with HDMI output not play back video properly, while a cheap Blu-ray-player does it just fine?
    Are there any known issues?
(sorry for posting this in the wrong from earlier!)

I have not used the dvd player app in my 2010 mini, but I've certainly played every media type under the sun since receiving it.
It plays them all without dropping frames, stuttering, pausing, etc.
Are you using dvd player with dvd disc images, video ts folders, or actual DVD discs in the drive?
If you're playing a disc image or video ts folder, are you accessing them over wireless networking? If so, try them on the internal drive, or over a wired network connection.
Try turning off the option is in energy saver that allows drive sleep (system sleep can stay where it is, just turn off *hard drive* sleep).
For best performance, make sure you aren't running other apps besides the media player app that you're using at the time.
Make sure you don't have software or utilities running background tasks (such as disk warrior, drive genius or tech tool pro).
If you have external devices connected (including printer and/or scanner), try the system without them connected. Does the video playback improve without them connected? If it does, then try reconnecting them one by one to figure out which one of them is related to the problem.

  • How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

Nothing technical has been discussed. It is blocked because of licensing/copy protection.
I have to buy another DVD player?
The Apple TV is not a DVD player. So if you do not already own a player, then yes you will have to purchase one to view them on your TV.

  • Dvd-playback is terrible

got a new mac mini dual core .. hooked it up to my toshiba 30" tv .. works fine .. BUT: dvd-playback in frontrow and dvd-player and quicktime isn't like butter, isn't like dvd-playback from my 30 euro dvd-player .. it's terrible! it trembles, it stops, sound an picture aren't simultaneously. i tried it with 10 dvds .. all the same.
so it's useless. i will send it back to apple.
    12 PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Indeed, resolution does not really matter in your case, as you do not seem to be trying to playback HD video, just normal DVDs. BVut that's not the problem. No Mini, would it be the original 1.25 Ghz with 256 MB of RAM will playback DVDs fine. Your Mini's behavior is not normal, and shows that there is a problem with it. It is not a problem with Dual-Core Minis, or even with the integrated graphics, it is a problem with your Mini. It could be that the optical drive is faulty, or a thousand other things, but your Mini is definitely capable of performing better than it does now. What I mean is that is needs some troubleshooting, or maybe even repair, but that once it gets fixed, DVDs will play fine.
Of course, you can take it back to Apple if you want (it's been 6 days since your original post, so if your really intend to do so, you'd better do it fairly soon). In the meantime you could give us more information about your Mini and the issues you're experiencing (expecially regarding what you meant by DVD playback in QuickTime - see my other post) so that we can try to help you and make your Mini as fast as it ought to be ...

  • DVD playback stutters, freezes

I made a DVD from old family movies as a Christmas present for my siblings. I used iDVD to make the disk image, converted it to an ISO file on the Mac using OS X's Disk Utility, and burned it on my PC. (My Mac doesn't have a Superdrive, so I used Nero to burn the ISO image on my PC, and did a bit verification when it was done to make sure the burn was good.)
It plays fine on the Mac, but on a consumer DVD player, the disc plays for maybe 20 minutes, then the video starts to stutter, and eventually the DVD player makes clicking noises and stops playing. The same disc will play longer in a PC, but it eventually stops there, too. The slide show part of the disc doesn't play at all on the DVD player, and plays poorly on a PC (a recent Dell laptop).
This is a real bummer for me - I worked a long time to make the video as good as I could get it from 50 year old films, and on the Mac it seemed to play perfectly.
So, is the issue with iDVD (and I need to start over with a PC-based authoring package like Nero or Easy Media Creator)? Or is it something else?
Any suggestions are appreciated - I really would like to get these films moved onto DVDs my family can watch (instead of using them as coasters).

    Hi There,
DVD playback stutters, freezes after about 20 minutes. I scoured the net for answers to this dilema and spoke to the highest technicians at apple who couldn't help me.
Through much frustration and many bad burnt discs I asked them to replace the DVD burner in my new G5 - Voila it stopped.
The answer is replace the burner in your Mac.
Hope you fine this the answer to your problem

  • Using Sony DVD model camcorder with Mac

Does anyone have any idea how to use the Sony DVD Handycam with a Mac? I can watch the DVDs on the IMAC but I can not download the DVDs to imovie to edit my own home videos. The Sony people told me to buy a PC, some help.

This DVD camera records using MPEG-2. That is the same as most all of the new Hard drive cameras.
This format is for playback and is not intended to be used as an editing format.
You will need to convert that format into a DV format that imovie can use.
MPEG Streamclip http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html is free and Apple's QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
is about $20.00. They are the tools that you need to download to convert these files.
Once you have done that, export to DV Stream (.dv) and import it into iMovie.

  • Macbook 2008 - DVD Playback issue

    Hello.
I have acquired this macbook about 6 months ago (I think it's early 2008, you twist the button with a coin to remove the battery).  I mainly use Windows on it, but it does exhibit the same issue on Mac OS X Lion and Windows 7 64-bit.
DVD Playback stutters a LOT.  It's like watching cbs.com on Low Power AMD CPU's (C-50 for example).
Workaround is to turn off hardware acceleration in Power DVD that I am using, then playback is smooth, just fine.  I haven't worked with MAC DVD Player settings, but so far that is what I have to do in Power DVD.
I am guessing its some sort of a hardware failure unless someone may have a suggestion.  Graphics card is Intel 965, I am typically running at about 30% ram free, cpu is 95% available, hard disk is in good condition.
    Thanks.

  • Sleeps during DVD playback

Why does OS X.4 display go to sleep during Quicktime playback? It doesn't matter if I'm watching something through FrontRow, Quicktime, or the DVD player.
Specifically, when my MacBook is on battery power, my display sleep comes on within a few minutes. It dims first and then sleeps a short time later. All this is normal behavior EXCEPT I don't want it to sleep while playing a DVD. If I'm watching a DVD, sleep mode should never happen.
My other mac computers do the same thing but its less noticeable since the display sleep delay times are longer.
What settings am I missing or perhaps this is a bug?

I'm sorry my first post was too brief. I should have mentioned my settings before. I'm not a newbie looking for location of Energy Saver settings and I'm not quite sure why it should matter.
What possible combination of settings would allow the computer or display to sleep during DVD or Quicktime playback?
    Settings for: Battery
    Optimization: Normal
Reduce brightness for this power source- checked
    Reduce brightness before sleep- checked
It will never sleep if the mouse is moving regardless of Energy Saver settings, right? Why should the display ever be put to sleep during playback of a DVD? It's like the OS never recognizes DVD & Quicktime video playback as actively using the computer.
    Questions:
Does yours go to sleep during DVD playback?
    What settings are you using?
I suspect this is an OS X.4 bug as I've caught one of my PPC macs going to screen-saver in the middle of playing a Quicktime movie clip.
Thank-you for your help... I really appreciate it even if it sounds otherwise.

    Try the following:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
    1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Empty the Trash and Restart.
Also, be sure you have an active internet connection when using Help because many help files have to be downloaded, they are not available locally.
