DVD Playback on Computer and Standalone-Player

Hi,
Since a lot of people here author DVDs professionally I wonder how you handle the quality-subject with your customers. Generally I wonder about the differences between standalone players on one hand hand on Computers or Laptops. Different monitors and especially different DVD Software players seem to have a major influence on the quality beside the qualityloss from scaling PAL or NTSC up to computer monitor resolutions anyway.
I already had 2 customers complaining abouth the quality (always on computer-playback!). Standalone-Playback is fine, but computer-playback gives some real bad results with DVD-SP authored DVDs.
I tried tweaking some of the settings in DVD-SP and checking colorlevels/optimizing my menu graphics in Photoshop... which made it a little better. Now one computer gives OK results in fullscreen-mode, the other one blurs like **** and the third one even gives unbelievalble pixelation in some parts of the picture (seems to dislike the colour red... and its not even a full tone!).
Now with these results, how do you handle complaints of customers who get real bad results on their hard/software??
And generally when authoring DVDs, which is more important for you ... standalone-playback or Computer/Laptop-Playback. This issue seems also pretty important for designing the menus, so I wondered why I rarely read about the problem?!
Karim

First of all thanks a lot for the quick replies.
@theshow:
I know that every project is different... at least it should be. In our case nearly every customer wants one thing that fits all to save costs... that is content-wise as well as for the medium its delivered on. Since DVD is the new standard most customers want DVD. Unfortunately most use the DVDs on their laptops for presentation, but also want to have DVDs to hand out to customers. This way its hard to get an optimal solution.
So in my case... the problem is mainly the menus that the customer wants for interactivity and technical details beside the movie on the DVD. Until I saw those awful pixelations I thought that would be a solution.
Now if I change to another way like clips with other codecs or Flash/Director-based Menus I basically get new problems like customers missing codecs and plug-ins, incompatibility between MAC/Windows machines? So I am trading better quality/resolution for perfect handling and a standardized medium.
Do you often work with any other interactive stuff like Flash/Director or HTML-based solutions in which you include movies? Basically it sounds like DVD-Menus for interactive content are a deadend unless the HD-Standard saves it soon.
@Silal:
Yes, I experienced the problems badly and it reminded me of the awful work webdesign used to be.
I don't know what to improve on my DVD menus, I work in PAL 768*576 compostion resized to 720*576 for the aspect ratio. No fulltone colours or full whites in the menus, no serif fonts and the DVDSP-Settings to software-based rendering and a constant bitrate of 7. Comparing to other menus I am not too far off qualitywise anymore, but the computermonitor display really screws it up and I wonder how to get this message to our customer and avoid in future projects.
BTW... I saw some still menus which looked even worse on computermonitors than my first ones and it looks like motion menus turn out best. Could that be true that motion-menus turn out better in MPEG2 than plain Photoshop-stills??

  • DVD playback issue with Windows Media Player

    Hi,
This isn't an Encore specific question, rather, a DVD playback one. Has anyone had issue playing their replicated DVDs in Windows Media Player? I truly believe it's the media player, not the DVD.  When we put a DVD in the drive and try to open it in WMP, it jumps right to a video, or jumps directly to the last place we were in a video.... it's not defaulting to the main menu.
Has anyone experienced this? Is it a programming glitch on my DVD? I feel like it's a WMP issue, as it's only happening on certain computers.
    thanks.

WMP has never been a good player for DVD's. At some point in the past, much of that functionality was disabled my MS, in hopes to reduce piracy. For some versions, no burned DVD would even play, though replicated/pressed DVD's were supposed to play fine.
I use CyberLink's PowerDVD and it is fine, even with my burned DVD's. The free MediaPlayer Classic HC plays my discs well too, with full menuing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Simultaneous Playback to Computer and Airport Express

As others have posted it appears possible with iTunes 6.0.2 to play to both a Computer and an Airport Express.
I have an Airport Express in my Kitchen, which has been updated with the Airport Setup Assistance.
If I shift-click on the speakers drop-down in iTunes to pick "Kitchen", I get the following:
"The current remote speaker "Kitchen" does not support playback as part of a group. Do you want to switch playback to the computer?"
Any thoughts and ideas are welcome. I've tested this on a Mac mini and a dual G4, both running 10.4.4 and iTunes 6.0.2. The Mac mini has an Airport Extreme card.

My original problem has been resolved. I ended up doing a hard reset of my Airport Express, then running the AirPort Express Firmware Updater. After re-establishing connection to my wireless network, I now get the Multiple Speakers option. Some links:

Others have posted that you can playback to both a computer and an Airport Express simultaneously with iTunes 6.0.2.
I have an Airport Express in my kitchen, and If I shift-click on the iTunes speaker drop-down and select Kitchen I get a warning:
"The current remote speaker "Kitchen" does not support playback as part of a group. Do you want to switch playback to the computer?"
Single selections on the drop-down merely switch iTunes output between Computer and Kitchen.
I have upgraded the firmware on the Airport Express using the Airport Setup Assistant. My Mac is running 10.4.4 and iTunes 6.0.2. Ideas and thoughts are welcome.

  • How do I produce a 16/9 aspect ratio DVD for both computer and standard TV display

Starting with clips recorded on a TM700, record mode HG1920, captured into FCE 4.0.1 and edited using FCE's recommended settings.  The sequences were exported to quicktime movie.  They were then brought into iDVD 7.0.4, which was set to 16:9 aspect ratio.  The results were as expected when shown on the iMac but when the disc was burnt and shown on a standard DVD player through a modern 16:9 TV the image was far wider than the screen although the verticle dimension appears to be correct.
It appears that the DVD player or iDVD has assumed anamorphic recording and has stretched the width and can't find out how to turn this off. The DVD works well when played on the iMac when using DVD Player

Hi many thanks for the thought, I have been through all the options on the TV aspect ratio button.
If 16:9  TVs are anamorphic then that implies that my clips should be recorded anamorphically (if that's a word), if so then can this be done? Also if this is done then what will that do to the replay through the computer, which appears to work?
It's looking more and more that the 2 display mediums are incompatible.
p.s. I should have added that it is in the UK with PAL.

  • Corrupted DVd playback with VLC and dvdnav

When I play dvds with VLC I get corrupted playback like this:
    http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/4964/v … 903ul9.png
Every other type of video i've tried plays just fine. Also if I play the vobs directly the playback is ok. So I'am assuming that the problem is releated to libdvdnav.
I have Acer Aspire 1350 -laptop with KM400 chipset. I've tried the default VIA-driver that comes with X and I also compiled the OpenChrome 0.3.0 RC -driver, but it didn't solve the problem.
I don't know if this problem is caused by OpenChrome-driver, VLC or libdvdnav. Currently I'am using ArchLinux. The problem happens also in all Debian/Ubuntu-variants and OpenSuse. PCLinuxOS is the only distribution I've tried that plays the dvds without corruption.
I also tried Ogle player and it's playback is also similarly corrupted.
Does anyone know what could cause this?

I've the same issue and I don't know how to fix it (my card is an nvidia go5200 32mb which is supported only by nvidia legacy driver which are no more available in arch).

  • Bad DVD Playback on Computer

I have a G5 2.5 GHz running OS X 10.3.9 and when I make a video in Final Cut Pro, export it either as a reference or self-contained Quicktime Movie, drag it into iDVD and burn it, it plays fine on my home DVD player but on my G5, it has horizontal ripples that appear especially when there are camera movements (pans and tilts). These ripples are more obvious with full screen viewing - I have the 20" Cinema Display - which, after trying different encodings and iDVD preferences, has led me to think it's my DVD Player 4.0. I looked into downloading 4.5 and then 4.6 but I think those are Tiger only. Am I on the right track? Has anyone run into this? Do I have any options other than upgrading to Tiger? Thank you for your help.
    Dan

I am having the oposite problem. My video on the mac looks fine, but when I burn it to DVD it has those horizontal ripples. I thought it was my DVD burner (a panasonic 103 from 2001) so I replaced it with an NEC 3550A....same problem.

  • Unable to make a DVD to play on standalone player from DVDSP4

This post summarizes a problem I wrote in about last week. DVDSP4 on my main g5 will not burn a simple DVD to play on a standalone player. My second g5 can do this. This rules out problems with external players and media. I have uninstalled reinstalled the software and it still won't do it. Before that I had tried deleting the preferences. It has been able to create disks that play on the computer's own DVDPLAYER.
I have to fix this problem. What's the next logical step? A new burner? Is there something I'm missing re: the computer itself? (which seems okay.)
    Chris

Take a look here for some media brands (did not see HP or who makes it). Verbatim are usually good for +R DL and Taiyo Yuden -R for single sided. (Many people swear by TYs, the DL is a bit more open)

It sounds like something fishy is going on with the machine, but worth trying other media. You may also want to try to build to another location and make sure you are formatting from there. Perhaps somehow you are using an older build?
Also check your VTS view and try making the first play VTS 1 (even if it is only a few seconds of black).
But it does sound like something on the burner itself may be off. Try the disc image as a start or use Toast if you have it. (I seem to get more reliable burns that way as oppossed to using DVD SP)

  • Dvd-playback is terrible

got a new mac mini dual core .. hooked it up to my toshiba 30" tv .. works fine .. BUT: dvd-playback in frontrow and dvd-player and quicktime isn't like butter, isn't like dvd-playback from my 30 euro dvd-player .. it's terrible! it trembles, it stops, sound an picture aren't simultaneously. i tried it with 10 dvds .. all the same.
so it's useless. i will send it back to apple.
    12 PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Indeed, resolution does not really matter in your case, as you do not seem to be trying to playback HD video, just normal DVDs. BVut that's not the problem. No Mini, would it be the original 1.25 Ghz with 256 MB of RAM will playback DVDs fine. Your Mini's behavior is not normal, and shows that there is a problem with it. It is not a problem with Dual-Core Minis, or even with the integrated graphics, it is a problem with your Mini. It could be that the optical drive is faulty, or a thousand other things, but your Mini is definitely capable of performing better than it does now. What I mean is that is needs some troubleshooting, or maybe even repair, but that once it gets fixed, DVDs will play fine.
Of course, you can take it back to Apple if you want (it's been 6 days since your original post, so if your really intend to do so, you'd better do it fairly soon). In the meantime you could give us more information about your Mini and the issues you're experiencing (expecially regarding what you meant by DVD playback in QuickTime - see my other post) so that we can try to help you and make your Mini as fast as it ought to be ...

  • I want to play a dvd on my Macbook and have it displayed on tv using my Apple tv

How do I play a dvd on my Macbook and have it displayed on the tv using Apple tv?

You can't directly.  ATV has no DVD drive.  If you can get AirPlay working (and keep it working) you can use a third party DVD player like VideoLan to play the DVD on the computer and use AirPlay to display the video on the screen.

  • Question about 16:9 and Desktop player

I authored a 16:9 Ananmorphic project where i have 2 sets of Menu. One in Widescreen and the other in 4:3. My firstplay is a script that checks for the SPRM14 setting of the player in order to choose the proper Menu aspect to display.
Anyways, when i tested in DVDsp, everything works fine, with both setting ( letterbox and Wide ). Now, when playing on a desktop DVD machine my 16:9 menu got cropped on both side. I don't understand since I made sure the dvd player is set to Wide and the 16:9 button engaged on my monitor. Any idea ?? Thanks

Actually, using commercial disc is not always a good reference since i've seen so many widescreen commercial DVD where the author only use one aspect ratio ( and most often 4:3 ) for the menus so your menu end up being stretched, not because your machine cannot display it but there's simply no 16:9 menu....and even if a 16:9 menu exits, there's no way for me to know if information has been cropped. Remember my 16:9 menu display fine ( no stretching ) but it is being cropped on each side.
I check my DVD on my computer and it looks fine, no cropping. I just can't figure out why it is being cropped on the side. Oh, i have 2 pioneer consumer grade ( forgot the model ), and they both behave the same.

  • New computer tip : Getting healthy discounts on DVD playback and authoring software

Lots of times when a user purchases a new computer, the manufacturer includes OEM software to supplement the hardware that was purchased. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. They can choose what features to include with your computer while disabling others. For most users, the included feature set is going to be enough to get the new owners feet wet about how their DVD Burner works, but what if you need more features then what is given? A great example is when I purchased a Compaq a long time ago. It had a feature limited version of NERO loaded on the machine. After registering the software, which I thought was required to use it, I was sent an email to buy the full version of the software for a discount. I was very skeptical. Then when I clicked the link in the email to see what the discount was , it was Nero Ultimate for $19.99! This was an upgrade version , however. but the discount was tempting! I bought it, downloaded and installed it, and within an hour I had 85 percent more features on my computer then what was included when I used the factory default software. So before you write off promotional emails as spam , listen to what they have to say. You can always opt out if you dont like it.
