DVD Playback pauses at chapter points

Two quick things first. This is my first time EVER posting to this or any other forum, so if I break some protocol, please gently inform me. Secondly, this is my third project ever using ENCORE, so even after reading and rereading the manual, I am still a bit lost in the weeds.
I jsut upgraded from Premeire 1, where DVD's (sans menu) could be created internally. That is not the case with CS4, so I had to break down and learn ENCORE.
Once here, I determined to try to learn to actually use some of the menu functinality for my latest project. (Previously, i just created the project and hired an outside firm to author the DVD and to set up menus).
Anyway, so here's my problem:
I ultimately need to be able to "Play All" AND, since the project is 1:54:07, to break into chapters.
I did this, i thought successfully, but when i play it back on my DVD player, there is a 1 second pause at every chapter markers.
I currently have my "play all" button linked to chapter 1 at the beginning of the program, and each successive chapter with an END ACTION linking it to the next chapter in the chain.
I tried setting all end actions to "Return to Menu" which worked great when i was selecting an individual chapter, not so great when I tried to PLAY ALL as it bounced me back to the menu continuosly.
I then attempted to import the origianl .avi as an asset and set it up on its own timeline and linked that to play all. Play All worked great.
I reset all chapter END ACTION functions to return to menu. and that all worked great.
Then when I tried to burn the disc, I was about 300GB too large. (I don't have a dual layer writer or discs).
Will somone please help me with step by step guidelines for creating a PLAY ALL function that will play smoothly across chapter breaks AND still allow for individual chapter selection. Given the parameter of a 2 hour video, and a single layer disc writer.
Thank you.

ok, dumb question. How? When i hit the pull down menu on End Actions, it does not give me a choice of "none" or "not selected" and I can't get my cursor on that bar to just backspace across it?
btw...thanks for you help.

  • Pauses at chapter points

When playing back my DVD, i get slight pauses at some (but not all) of the encore chapter points (these were created in Premiere CS3, which output an .m2v). After a pause occurs, if i back up and play through the chapter point again, it plays seamlessly. The Encore project only has one timeline. I have some menus which allow the user to start playback at various scenes in the timeline, and playback continues to the end of the timeline. there are no end actions on any of the chapter.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Ken Fong

So you should NOT have END actions set on the Chapter points, to play the whole timeline from Chapter 1, in Play Movie button.
So how do we use the Chapters, when used individually?
Can you set different end actions in a Play List, than in a sub menu for playing certain chapters on their own?
So end actions on the sub menu, do not effect the timeline's chapters, so allowing continuous play from the main menu AND separate play in other sub menus?

  • DL DVD playback stalls at break point

My dual layer DVDs all have problems with the playback at the break point between layers. This happens whether I burn direct from iDVD or if I first make a disk image.
I have used two different burners and two different brands of media (Ritech and Verbatum) and still the same result.
The problem is inconsistent between disks and players. For the most part, they play flawlessly in DVD player on any of my three Macs, but behave poorly on each of my three commercial DVD players.
In some cases, the playback merely stalls for about 10 seconds and then resumes, having skipped forward an amount about equal in time to the length of the stall.
In other cases, playback stops completely and the balance of the disk cannot be played without restarting, going to the chapter menu and selecting a chapter beyond the break point and resuming playback.
I am creating disks as part of a Videography business and can't afford to produce a product that my customers can't rely on to playback.
Is it simply the case that some DVD players are just not good at handling DL media?
I have Toast Titanium 7 as well, and can compress the files to fit on a single layer disk. But won't the quality suffer from the compression?
Does anyone have a suggestion to help me produce quality disks that are reliable?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Ive had the same problem & its definately the DVD players that are the problem (some simply dont like DVD+R DL). What I normally do is put a disclaimer label on the cover of the proof saying along the lines of......
'For quality reasons, this DVD has been mastered on a Dual layered disc, and may not be compatible with certain models of DVD player. If you experience any unexpected playback issues, please contact us as soon as possible!'
If the client does experience issues with the disc - at least they will know that its a problem with THEIR equipment, & I'll then split the project over 2 discs.
Keeps your professional image & keeps the client from getting annoyed!

  • CS4: Auto-pause at chapter points

I've seen several techniques for getting a DVD to pause at each chapter point until the user pushes Play again. They require either: 1. each clip have its own menu; 2. each clip have its own timeline. I have a project that has nearly 50 clips. Doing either of the aforementioned becomes unwieldy and confusing to put together, especially with syncing menu images so the process is transparent to the user. I was hoping for a simpler way.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Playback pausing at chapter markers

Creating a DVD of an individual talking to camera, I've used chapter markers so the user can jump to particular points in his talk.
However, when run in the Simulator, the project pauses/ playback glitches whenever a chapter marker is passed.
Is this supposed to happen? And if not what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    jON

Sounds to me as if you originally set an end jump on a chapter marker to go back to the main menu, then changed it to go on to the following marker. All you need to do is to remove all end jumps on the markers.
If you do want to only play a single marker then you can do this with stories instead of using end jumps.

  • Dual Layer and Chapter Points

    Hi everyone.
I have just finished a wedding dvd and I'm having several problems burning it into a DVD+R DL (I am using Verbatim Printable now). The only way I can accomplish that is to generate a ISO file from encore and use ImgBurn to burn the dvd.
The problem is that after burning the DVD in ImgBurn, the chapter points I defined in encore's timeline are wrong. Some of them seem to be outdated for a few seconds and others are refering other chapter points, however in the preview of encore everything is fine.
It seems that it was created a chapter for the layer break i guess. Because when i navigate with  the ">>" button, the 3rd chapter is the ending of the 2nd... and is not mapped that way in encore preview.
Does anyone can help me out?

As we all know Toast resets the Dual Layer break
point to the exact point... no good if you want to
    manually set it in DVDSP.
My question is if I create a disk image with the
point set in DVDSP and burn through disk utility will
the layer break point be reset or will it maintain
the DVDSP setting. As I can control the burn speed I
prefer this to direct burning from DVDSP
    Thanks!!
Unfortunately, the break point may still change even if you burn an image file with Disk Utility. The issue isn't that Toast or Disk Utility are resetting the break point on purpose; it's that the disk image that DVDSP creates doesn't contain any layer break information. From page 584 of the DVDSP 4.1 manual: ".img: Use this option to create a disk image. With a dual-layer project, a single “.img” file contains the entire project, without any break point information."

  • Chapter points get out of sync while burned to DVD

In the timeline I had to trim an mpeg file for 12 seconds. Later on I added chapters. In the preview everything works fine, but when burned to a DVD, the chapter points get out of sync more and more. At the end it's about 30 seconds on a film of 60 minutes. Even the film stops 30 seconds earlier.
    What is going wrong here?
    Han Bouman

Yes! This is indeed true; I just noticed this today. It doesn't appear to have any actual affect on the DVD. The first chapter starts out right at 0:00 but by the end, it's off (as compared to the project file) by mannnnnnny seconds. Why does this happen?

  • Audio/video sync issues at chapter points, on certain DVD players

I created a DVD using DVD Studio Pro 4, had it replicated at a manufacturing facility, and have now sent out copies to approximately 600 people. About a dozen or so of my customers have experienced issues where at the chapter points for the film (a 60-minute documentary) the audio and video go out of sync. Unfortunately I can't describe this issue any more accurately than that because I haven't seen the problem. The disc plays fine on the vast majority of players. The people that are experiencing the problem have DVD players like the Sony DVP-NC655P and the Samsung DVD-R120.
Does anyone have any clue at all as to what the issue could be?
    Thanks very much.

Is your audio PCM or AC3? If the audio is going out of sync on onlyl a handful of set-top players, the build is probably OK, and your media is probably starting out in sync. I suspect that your bit rate may be be too high, and the audio is chiking the buffer on the player, making the audio go out of sync. What format of audio is on the disc, and what is combined average/maximum bit rate?
    Hope this helps -

  • Import Avid xml chapter points for DVD Studio Pro

    Hello-
We are an Avid based house (don't ask) but I am infiltrating with DVD Studio Pro. I need to find a way to import the exported xml file that Avid makes for chapter points. The lame Sonic/Avid burning software imports it with no problem. I tried but Studio Pro does not see the file (it is grayed out).
Please give me an easy way to have another reason to convince the powers that be to go Mac.
    Thanks

You can import a marker list easily into DVDSP. This is explained on page 385 of the online DVDSP manual (under the Help menu). However, you'll need to strip out all the non-essential info from the Avid xml file to do this. The XML will be complex, and may have the timecodes in raw frame numbers, rather than HH:MM:SS:FF format. I have used a combination of Excel and Word to flip the data into tables and back, and use find and replace to get the data into the magic 2-column format.
There may be another option to export from the Avid that will give you more simplified data, such as an EDL or batch list, though these two options in FCP include everything but the markers.

  • Chapter point End Action not working

I'm creating a a training DVD in which one timeline has several spots where the DVD should pause while the class discusses the scene that has just played. I've added 5 seconds of black to mark those spots, and at the beginning of the black I have a chapter point that has an End Action to go to a menu with a "Continue" button. At the end of the black I have another chapter point that the "Continue" button links to. On one of the point that route to the "Continue" menu, it doesn't route to the menu, but just jumps back to the last chapter point...essentially looping that section. It doesn't do this when I "Preview" from the main menu...all works correctly there, but when I Build the project to DVD Folders and play on my PC, that's when it happens.
    Steve Brame

Nope...no overrides are set. I have several other chapter points on the timeline that are set up identical to this one, and they link correctly to their respective menus...only this one didn't. I deleted the point and recreated it and now it works. I'd noticed several other Chapter Point issues here that were solved by this action.
    Thanks!

  • Annoying video/DVD playback problems on new Mac mini (2010)

I have a Mac mini at home right now, latest edition (2010).
I am very surprised to find that DVD playback exhibits signs of stutters here and there. Not huge stutters, but I can constantly see small "skips" and what seems like frame drops here and there. Playing back the same DVD on a $120 Blu-ray-player shows no sign of this behaviour.
I have tried this on two different TV sets (one 720p and one 1080p), and the mini is not able to play back a DVD without these stutters/skips. Two different blu-ray players play the disc just fine (I have been using Ghost Dog to test - check chapter to and the scenes containing panning, it's easier to notice that way).
It seems ordinary video files playback (files from HD, 720p, mkv) exhibit some of the same behaviour, though this seems more dependent on which app is used for playback. Quicktime seems worse (noticeable stutters/skips), VLC 1.1 a bit better (though both DVD playback and file playback show signs of stutter), while XBMC is the best of the three, with very little frame drop (if that is in fact what it is).
Any idea what's going on here? Why will such a expensive machine with HDMI output not play back video properly, while a cheap Blu-ray-player does it just fine?
    Are there any known issues?
(sorry for posting this in the wrong from earlier!)

I have not used the dvd player app in my 2010 mini, but I've certainly played every media type under the sun since receiving it.
It plays them all without dropping frames, stuttering, pausing, etc.
Are you using dvd player with dvd disc images, video ts folders, or actual DVD discs in the drive?
If you're playing a disc image or video ts folder, are you accessing them over wireless networking? If so, try them on the internal drive, or over a wired network connection.
Try turning off the option is in energy saver that allows drive sleep (system sleep can stay where it is, just turn off *hard drive* sleep).
For best performance, make sure you aren't running other apps besides the media player app that you're using at the time.
Make sure you don't have software or utilities running background tasks (such as disk warrior, drive genius or tech tool pro).
If you have external devices connected (including printer and/or scanner), try the system without them connected. Does the video playback improve without them connected? If it does, then try reconnecting them one by one to figure out which one of them is related to the problem.

  • Two Second pause at chapter markers

    Hi
I recently authored a Dvd with one timelime with 14 chapter markers, on the main menu I have Play All and Chapters buttons, The Play all button is synched to the first chapter with end actions to the next chapter and so on, and the Chapters menu buttons are synched to the chapter markers on this timeline, when the dvd is played back there is a pause between chapter markers.
I looked into this and was told the answer is a Chapter Playlist, if so could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial and can I still use my chapter select menu, also do I have to bring in a second timeline as this will make my project too big.
    Thanks for any help
    Paul

If I read correctly, you have a Play All and then the individual Chapters. You want the Play All Button to do just that - play all. Each of the individual Chapters will be accessed and will play, then return to the Chapter selection Menu(s). Is this correct?
If so, set each Chapter's End Action to Return to Last Menu. For the Play All, do a  Chapter Playlist, and use the Pickwhip (that little "spiral" linking icon) to organize your Chapters in the order that you wish. Set the Chapter Playlist's End Action to Return to Last Menu. [I'd specify the exact Menu in each of these, and even choose exactly which Button you will want highlighted, when you return.] The Chapter Playlist will supercede those in the Chapters. In Preview, you will get an informational notice about this, but that's OK, as it's what you want.
    Good luck,

  • Tried everything:  Burned DVDs blink, pause and/or freeze altogether.

    Hello there.
I live in a town in Mexico, where I volunteer screening art and foreign films for free at a non-profit cultural center. The place has a proyector and sound system, I bring everything else, coming out of my pocket.
I've been trying to show films we cannot get in Mexico, so I've mastered the technique of ripping and integrating spanish subtitles using DVDSP4. However, even as the subtitles seem to be fine, the playback has been a terrible pain in the neck.
I had a Sony DVD player, and at certain points the DVDs would blink or freeze up. I tried everything I could find out and think of, to no avail. Now I have an Oppo DVD player, and the video pauses for fractions of a second then resumes play, only to pause again a few seconds later, throughout the film.
As a test, I played a couple of straightforward 'ripped and burned' DVDs, and bingo, they play perfectly, so the error must be in something about DVDSP4. I'm using every trick in the book, firing with both barrels.
    My media:
    - Taiyo Yuden DVD-R, no luck.
    - Verbatim DVD+R, no luck.
    - Verbatim DVD+R DL, hit and miss.
For the build, I'm encoding One Pass VBR, minimun Bit Rate 4.0, maximum Bit Rate 6.4. I even tried a maximum Bit Rate of 6.0, no luck. Also, Motion Estimation either Best or Better, no luck.
I was burning on the SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-K04L, then bought an external Sony DRX-820UL-T. No luck.
I've tried Toast Titanium 6, 7 and Popcorn. No luck.
I've run Disk Utility to repair both permissions and the drive. No luck.
    In a nutshell: Help!!!
    A couple of thoughts:
    1. Could the Tiger updates be the culprit?
    2. Most of the time, the only subtitles I can find are from Spain, therefore in PAL format. I adjust the times to NTSC then integrate them to my project. Maybe this is the problem, but even if I turn off the subtitles, the problem persists.
If there's anything you can think of that might help me solve this nightmare, please let me know.

Unfortunatley what you are doing runs afoul of the Terms of Use of this Board. Even though a non-profit cultural center sounds like a good cause, doing what you are doing is copyright infringement, so people can get in trouble/kicked off here if they help. So if you do not get answers, it is not because people do not want to help or are being non-responsive
    Sorry

  • DVD playback issue with Windows Media Player

    Hi,
This isn't an Encore specific question, rather, a DVD playback one. Has anyone had issue playing their replicated DVDs in Windows Media Player? I truly believe it's the media player, not the DVD.  When we put a DVD in the drive and try to open it in WMP, it jumps right to a video, or jumps directly to the last place we were in a video.... it's not defaulting to the main menu.
Has anyone experienced this? Is it a programming glitch on my DVD? I feel like it's a WMP issue, as it's only happening on certain computers.
    thanks.

WMP has never been a good player for DVD's. At some point in the past, much of that functionality was disabled my MS, in hopes to reduce piracy. For some versions, no burned DVD would even play, though replicated/pressed DVD's were supposed to play fine.
I use CyberLink's PowerDVD and it is fine, even with my burned DVD's. The free MediaPlayer Classic HC plays my discs well too, with full menuing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Fast forward goes past chapter points

Hi, I am also experiencing the same problem. After burning the project into a disc we tested it on a DVD player. In normal play, the videos would stop at the end of a chapter however when we press fast forward it would bypass chapters. Instead of stopping at the end of a chapter it will keep forwarding to the other videos. Is there a way for the fast forward control to stop exactly at the end of a chapter point? Any kind of help and advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Make each chapter a separate video in its own timeline.
