DVD player 4.6 not updating to 4.6.1

Everytime I run the updater, and then check the version info on the DVD player, it shows 4.6

David,
If you haven't yet installed the updater, i recommend holding on that for a few weeks. Here's why. At least one of my four macs, hates this particular 4.6.1 updater in that it now stutters on playback (normally just at the very start of most commercial DVD's); but noticeably nevertheless.
Not sure why, nor if it's the updater itself, or something else. However, when i revert to an older startup volume with the former DVD Player then it plays all DVD's perfectly.
The other 3 macs are all newer and do not have any issues whatsoever with the most current DVD Player / updater. If you do opt to install, I'd recommend going forward with caution.

  • DVD Movies won't play after 10.4.10 / DVD Player 4.6.1 Updates...

CDs will boot fine, blank DVDs will mount fine, but when I insert a DVD movie; the drive won't mount and the DVD player will not play my discs. I currently have a Pioneer DVR-109 installed in my PowerPC G5. Any information or help please.

    SOME GOOD NEWS!
IT DEFINITELY IS A TIGER ISSUE... here's a little workaround... although in a tricky way, i got my commercial dvd's to finally play. do the following and let me know if it will work for you as well.
    -insert a movie dvd (commercial)
-when told that the disc is not readable and prompted to eject or ignore hit ignore
-you will not see the disc mount on your desktop
-open vlc and hit play. choose "disc" for destination and hit okay (don't try with apple's dvd player, IT WILL NOT WORK)
-you will now see the movie title in your playlist, select it and play it... it works!!
good luck and until we find a permanent fix we can still watch movies on our macs! BTW, i used vlc 0.8.6c for this test on 10.4.10. incase you're not familiar with vlc, it's a free video player and you can download it from number of places on the internet.

  • My project is set up with "rotation" menu intro, video, and then "rotation" on end, however, when you put DVD disc in DVD player, menu does not come up on front end, it goes straight to the video.  Is there some step I am missing?

My project is set up with "rotation" menu intro, video, and then "rotation" on end, however, when you put DVD disc in DVD player, menu does not come up on front end, it goes straight to the video.  Is there some step I am missing?

Open your iDVD project and go into the Map mode.  Made sure the autostart bin on the left is empty.
If you find a video in that bin remove it, save the project as a disk image and check the disk image with DVD Player.  Then you can burn the disk image to disk with Disk Utilitiy at 4x for optimal burning.

  • DVD Player 5.4 not working on OS 10.6.5 ??

    Hey guys,
dvd player 5.4 is not working on snow leopard 10.6.5
    Apple should fix it.

I will assume that the DVDs you are having problems with are commercial products, not home-grown, and they work totally fine in another DVD player. In other words, we can rule out that the DVDs are not the problem.
The story you tell is certainly suggestive that there is a problem with the software updating process. Before you take the computer back to the Apple Store, one more thing you can try is using the "Combo Updater" for 10.6.5. You can get it from the Apple support web site. It is a large download, close to 1 GB in size. You simply install it on top of whatever updates you have already done.
It is one of those things that sounds almost like voodoo, but solves an awful lot of problems.
It is a good idea before installing any new software to go into Disk Utility, highlight "My MacBookPro", and run the "Repair Permissions" and "Verify Disk" buttons. Don't worry about all the results you will get under "Repair Permissions;" everyone gets the same results and rarely do you need to be concerned.
So let me be among the first to suggest you try the Combo Updater.
    Good luck
    Arch
P.S.: you do have a computer backup strategy, yes??

    Hi Maria
    This one is though.
    a. More info most probably needed:
    • Mac OS X.4.1 (as You writted at page-foot) - I would use X.4.10
    • QuickTime version ? ? 7.? ?
    • Apple DVD-player version ? v4.0 ?
    b. Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    Many possible origins. Most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc if it is less than 10Gb should raher have 25Gb
    • Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)

  • One Step DVD in Mac OS X DVD Player = "Supported disc not available"

I created a few simple movies in iMovie HD 6 and burned them in iDVD 6 as One Step DVDs from the iMovie Project file using Verbatim 2x DVD-R discs. The final DVDs have no trouble playing in my standard component DVD players, however they won't play on any of my Macs. I get a "Supported Disc Not Available" error message when I launch DVD Player.
Is there a compatibility problem between DVD Player and DVDs burned with iDVD??

My version of DVD Player is 4.6.5 which works fine, but I don't EVER make OneStep DVDs. Check your version.

  • Third Party DVD Player for MacIntel (not VLC)?

The only software I miss from my Windoze days is PowerDVD. It had many features like step-backward, multiple FF and REW speeds that were keyboard shortcut accessible (vs. Apple DVD player where you set one speed and that's it), screen capture, and it also did a better job of deinterlacing and introduces less "halos" and softening artifacts than Apple's DVD player (and yes, I've tried both with and without the deinterlacing setting enabled). It also zoomed to different resolutions better.
Is there anything analogous to that for Mac OSX, preferably a MacIntel native program? I've searched this forum and versiontracker and google and have come up empty. Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to do the last resort, which is to Bootcamp my MBP in order to have one program.
    Thanks!

You can also manually adjust the video on Apple's built video player by going to the Window menu -> Video Zoom and unchecking lock aspect ratio if you want to customize it.
Try changing the scan rate in the Control menu in the menubar to affect color, as well as change video color in the Window menu of Apple's DVD Player. Often the built-in menus of commercial DVDs let you change the video settings that fit your desired color. If there is a specific commercial DVD that you are having trouble with, maybe I can rent it with Netflix and see if I see the problem you are seeing. It might take me a week to get it, but I'd be happy to experiment with it.
Apple's DVD Player also supports slow and faster play through its floating controller menu that is available via the Window menu -> Show Controller. Note, the slower play is available through the pullout drawer that looks like this:
The top controls that are double arrows are fast forward when held down, as opposed to change chapter if just clicked quickly. command-shift-right arrow on the keyboard (command is the Apple logo key) fast forwards even faster if held down long enough and command-shift-left arrow reverses faster and slower if held down long enough and both go in a loop from 2x to 32x in factors of 2, which when let go will give you the speed you want to change.
Sometimes you can also do a color calibration of your display if you are more used to different color gradients in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays -> Color and then select Calibrate.
To zoom video on Mac OS X, you can also use universal access. Command-Option-8, followed by a command-option-equal sign on the horizontal keys above the main body of the keyboard for increase size, or a command-option-minus sign for decrease size. To disable this feature command-option-8 again. Command is the Apple logo key.
Another DVD Player made for the Mac is Interactual's DVD Player.
Screen Capture of DVD is possible with the freeware Capture Me.

  • My dvd player dvp-ns55p not playing some discs that it used to

I have a dvd player model # DVP-NS55P. I recently bought Rio2. It played several times and then started taking forever to load the disc to the point where I now get the message: "cannot load disc". The dvd is not scratched and is in perfec condition. In fact it plays in my laptop. I am however able to play other discs in the player without any issues. Please help!!!

    Three things you can try:
    1. Clean the superdrive with a proprietory CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.
    2. Perform an SMC reset:

If you are using a Wireless Keyboard:

  • DVD ok on some DVD player and TV, not on others...

    hello,
I am working on my first DVD, but i have problems. I have test menus of all sort: movie, text directly writed in the buttons on a still image... When i test the DVD on my TV and DVD player or on my computer it is correct. But when my boss or my client test it, they say it is blurred...
I know it is difficult because text is dark on a white background. but since it work at home, why cant it work everywhere ? What do i have to look at to be sure that my DVD will work everywhere .? i am completly lost....
For info : I work my movie in Flash, export in Quicktime ( animation, best quality) and after export from QT in m2v. For the moment i have no sound...
I encode in VBR two passes, bitrate 7,5 to 9, best encoding...
Please help me, i am getting crazy...

all the images of the menu "vibrate"...or jump ..
If you are using small text, or you have created your graphics with fine lines or details, or horizontal lines smaller than 4 points, you will see this jumpiness.
Your only solution is to blur your menu graphics a little bit. Obviously this is not possible if you created your graphics or text in DVDSP, only if you create them in Photoshop et al (or you can blur motion graphics in FCP or After Effects).

I grasp that you have purchased the HP Stream 11 which does not come with an internal  CD/DVD and when you connected an external one, you received a message that it was missing a file.
Have you done all your Windows updates?
Have you done a manual check for Windows updates?
Have you ran the HP Support Assistant to check for HP updates?
What file does it say you are missing?
When it is connected, if you check Device Manager does it supply any additional information?
Have you ran the Windows troubleshooter?
    Good Luck!

  • Dvd player does not read burnt dvds

i burnt 2 dvds on my macbook pro (leopard). they both play fine on my macbook pro and my toshiba dvd player.
they will not play on my macbook and powermac g4 (tiger).
is this a problem with the dvd player in tiger? if so, any way to update it or download a newer version?

oh sorry i forgot to add that i managed to play some of the contents directly from my storage disk:
    1. open dvd player
    2. select play media
    3. instead of clicking on the FOLDER, like i wld do if i access the video from my macbook pro (leopard), i have to open the folder and click on VIDEO TS inside the folder
it will play this way. but i wonder if some features are lost? and why can't i play directly fr the burnt dvd like i can do on my macbook pro and toshiba dvd player?
sorry this is longwinded... i am rather frustrated here... thx for the help!

  • Apple DVD player not working on Mid 2011 iMac running 10.7.2

I have a 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 iMac which came with Lion preinstalled.  When I insert a DVD, Apple's DVD player comes up with the following error:
"A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"
The DVD player works.  I can play DVDs using VLC, and I can use it to burn in iDVD, but Apple's own DVD player simply will not recognize it.  I hoped this problem might be solved when I upgraded to 10.7.2, but alas it has not.
Does anyone know how to fix or work around this issue?  This computer is used daily for my media-heavy job, so leaving it somewhere for service is not really feasible unless I'm completely unable to work on it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the player and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • DVD Player Broken after 10.5.4 Security Update

After the recent Software Updates, my DVD player no longer works. I've tried a variety of disks, and none plays properly. Symptoms: first, there is no audio. Second, the playback stutters and stalls. Third, the application beachballs and eventually stops responding, requiring a force quit.
    The disks play in VLC.
I did all the normal DIY troubleshooting stuff like checking the disk, repairing permissions, running maintenance scripts.
This seems related directly to the software updates, because I was able to play DVDs before installing them.
    --thalo

    Hi thalo,
I have the same problem and this user has it, too:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1676773
It only occurs on my Intel Mac mini. On the PPC Mac mini with also all updates and almost the same software installed the DVD player runs without problems. Which is strange as in your and the other user's cases it happens on PPC machines.
I tried creating a new user, reinstalling the DVD player from a pre-update backup, and uninstalling all Quicktime codecs (which wasn't a big hope as the DVD player doesn't use Quicktime afaik), but nothing helped.
I'm sorry I can't help you. Did you find a solution? Hope Apple can fix it in the next update.
    Simon
