DVD player after 'upgrade'

I bought Tiger for my 12 " powerbook which was running the latest version of panther. I got it 3 days ago, and it has caused nothing but trouble. Most notibly has been that DVD player cant play a DVD for more than 2 or 3 minutes without crashing. Also i have been quite underwhelmed by the software updates, for 50 pounds i would expect more than 30 day demos of keynotes and pages then spotlight and dashboard. Where is the updated version of garageband??! where is the improved software? It seems like i payed 50 pounds for apple to break my only DVD player!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Despite appearances your DVD player did not break because of Tiger. What your symptoms indicate is there was data corruption, or a hard drive that was too full, or bad permissions on your files that created a problem with the updates. The updated Garageband can only be found if you bought iLife '06 itself, if you have an older Garageband. No iLife applications except iTunes are included with Tiger.
When upgrading it is important to follow the procedures on my FAQ, especially if there is the potential for data corruption:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
You should not be buying an update to speed your machine, or to fix problems that exist on your machine. If you had any problems whatsoever before, updates will only enhance their visibility.
Updates usually are there to add features, and not fix problems.

  • IMac no longer recognizes my DVD player after upgrading to DVD Player 4.6

    Hi,
Several days ago I upgraded to Tiger and then 2 days ago, through "software update" I upgraded to 10.4.3 and also upgraded to DVD Player 4.6
I just discovered that my computer no longer sees the DVD player and an inserted DVD doesn't show up anywhere (when I check under "Hardware" and then "Disc Burning" under "About This Mac" it says "No burning device was found."
I tried reinstalling the upgrade (DVD Player 4.6) but it says it can't because there's no valid DVD player in the system (my computer has a Superdrive and I've played and burned DVD's a plenty in the past several months).
Any help/info will be GREATLY appreciated!!
    -Stephen

  • Error message when running HD-DVD player after clean win 7 install on P205-S6347

On a P205-S6347, did clean win 7 ultimate install with toshiba instructions and loadup software downloaded from toshiba support.  On first dvd player install of latesed full player, got a video eror.  Installed latets patch, now I get "An error has occured in the audio output settings. Please check thet the sound driver is set up properly" The sound playes fine for all other programs/utilities.  Note, I am running USB powered Logitec external speakers.  I have tried to follow all the recomendations of others with this problem, yet nothng works, unless I'm not using the right software, yet I only use whats on the site for the model and OS.  The reason that I want to use this OEM player is that I havent found a comparable player that does just that, playes DVD's like a home unit, complete with menu access as a physical player would and that the moving cursers only seem to work with the Toshiba player, whereas others like VLC and Kantaris will only show one moving curser on a menue and I have to guess where the next one is to slick it to start, and Real Player isnt any better either.  Other problems I've had with other players are that the graphics seem a bit hazy sometimes, I never have that problem with the Toshiba player.  Also, others have way to many bells and whistles, I only want a player that works doing that specific job.  I wish Toshiba would package a universal player that could be installed with all that it needs to run itself.  Any Ideas folks?

Try to use the command ipconfig /renew in the cms (command dos box)
    Also try this:
Control Panel > Administration Tools > Computer Management > Services & Applications > Services.
Scroll down this list to find 'WLAN Auto Config'
Double click on 'WLAN Auto Config' On the general tab, select from the start up type drop down menu, select 'Automatic'. Under Service Status click on 'Start'. Then 'Apply' these settings and exit from all open control panel windows.
Otherwise uninstall the Realtek driver in the device manager.
    Then reboot the notebook.
Download the Realtek WLan driver again and install it.

  • What do I do with my DVD player after hanging a flat screen?

I am looking at going flat screen and getting a wall mount but do not know what options there are for DVD player and other accessories.  Are there products for hanging them on the wall also?  Any cordless options? I really don't know these things, please help!

go in to your nearest best buy store and ask for these products:
Sanus - Wall-Mount Shelf System for A/V Components. (4 products. ranges from 149 to 449.)
they have like 4 different types. allows you to mount audio/video devices on the wall as well. and they give you cable managements to hide your wires too. pretty neat. and then ask for the monster cable hider thingy to hide the rest of your cables.

  • No More Surround Sound on Blu-ray player after Upgrade in MediaSmart

When I used the Blu-ray player in my home theatre I selected the "HDMI pass through" mode to get surround sound. I came across some new movies that would not play and after the update from HP the player would simply freeze up as soon as there was audio present. I had to go into the task manager to shut it down.
MediaSmart works fine on the laptop, but it only freezes up when I use the "HDMI pass through" setting.
I have tried "HDMI pcm" mode and that doesn't work either. The Denon receiver shows there are five channels working but I only get stereo sound out of the front left and right speakers. This would indicate that the Blu-ray player is not outputting in 5.1 surrond sound and that the laptop and the Denon receiver is working fine.
Hp supports' solution was to reinstall the old driver or try a system restore. I know a system restore isn't going to do anything. The problem is in the new software. The new software did not work on my HDX18 when it was in Vista, it didn't work when I upgraded to Windows 7 and it doesn't on my new dv8.
I tried contacting CyberLink to let them know that the upgrade is giving problems, but I think they are ignoring me.
Personally I think that either HP or Cyberlink just forgot to add the drivers for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound.
If someone were to find a solution to this one I would be surprised. I am quite certain I covered every possibility, but you never know.
     Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    This question was solved.

OK, I found a solution. SORT OF. I use the laptop to watch region "B" Blu-ray movies that I buy out of England. Rather than set Media Smart to region "B" I purchased software from SlySoft.com. When the software is running it removes the region code and all that annoying copy protection. Fox is the worst, followed by Walt Disney. (Pixar Animation and Buena Vista) One specific movie that would not play on the old Media Smart software was "Ice Age 3 Dawn Of The Dinosaurs. When I tried, a red window came up prompting me to go to Cyberlink for an update. Of course after that the movie would play, but I had no surround sound in my home theatre.
So now I use the old Media Smart  software and run SlySoft...no more red window...I have surround sound in my theatre through HDMI pass through.
The problem with this solution is that Slysoft costs around 114.00$ U.S. for a life time membership and free updates forever. HMMM.

I upgraded my phone last week to the V20... And now when i go to transfer music through music manager it will not refresh the music library? Anyone help? When i press refresh it just freezes and i have to turn it off when turned back on i can then access the music player and play the music, but if i try to refresh it again it just freezes again and then i cant get into the music player at all, needs to be turned off again, is this something to do with the upgrade?
Is there anything that can be done to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance

I had the same problem with v20 but if I waited for like 5 min. it finally refreshed itself. It was pretty annoying so I formatted the memory and hard-reseted the phone. Now it's OK. However I noticed that if you use the PC software to restore the phone's setting, chances are that you'll have problems. So I use it only to restore messages, calendar data and contacts-never to restore the settings so be sure to unmark this option.

  • PowerBook G4 1.33 wont boot from DVD drive after upgrade

Can anyone offer some assitance. I just upgraded my PowerBook G4 1.33 from a Combo Drive to a Panasonic SuperDrive. Also upgraded to a 250GB harddrive. Got a tree error on HD and when I went to boot up Diskwarrior I could not boot from the DVD drive. It does not come up as a bootable drive. Tried Holding down "C" key "Option Key" nothing works. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? All other drive functions work perfectly.

Hi chubbs899, and a warm welcome to the forums & Macdom!
i have read says you can go in through disk utility and partition the drive but i still have yet to see anything that says something about disk utility.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html
it gives you the option of doing "journal" format or "case sensitive, journal" format.
Don't use Case Sensitive, confuses many Apps.
i suspected jumper settings but when i read through the manual on the WD website it didnt seem to say anything about doing something specifically for apple. it had a jumper for slower transfer rate 1.5Gb/s
Yes, it needs that jumper on pins 5&6.

  • Can no longer open BOTH DVD drives after upgrade

OK...I have a Mac Pro, and pre Lion I had NO PROBLEM using F12 and opt-F12 to open both of my Superdrive trays. However, after Lion, F12 AND opt-F12 BOTH OPEN THE BOTTOM SUPERDRIVE ONLY, and I cannot access my upper superdrive.
Am I missing some sort of preference setting that needs to be changed? If so, I haven't been able to find it. If this is a known bug I have not been able to find any info on it.
    Thanks in advance...

    Anybody got this?
I've got 2 drives, and  only the bottom one works after the 10.7 rollout? Doesn't appear that the other one is even recognized in the system profiler anymore.
Surely there's someone that  knows wth is going on here...?

  • DVD wont play on DVD player after new super drive installed

I fried my burner and Apple put a new one in for me but now the movies I burn wont play on my DVD burners. Same media I've always had good fortune with. Works with my cheapy Acer but not the Pioneer. I need to send masters off for duplication and am not sure they will work with dups equiptment.
Is this a setting somewhere or is there a work around?
    I have v 7.02 iDVD.
    Thanks for any help

    Hi
Memorex - not good reputation here.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Running a cleaning CD/DVD from time to time can help
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Lost access to CD &DVD player after I installed iTunes 8.0.2.20

Has anyone else run into this issue when installing iTunes 8? I'm running XP pro, and the following is listed in the device manager: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupt or missing. (code 39)."

I had a problem similar to this that appeared suddenly, itunes 7 was on the computer at the time but I dont think that was what did it becuase it was still happening when I installed iTunes 8. A while after that it suddenly started working again, one drive at a time. But it was weeks after installing iTunes 8 so im not sure if thats what did it...

  • Macbook 2007 is totally after slow after upgrading Adobe Flash for Safari

Last month I replaced the (failed) hard drive of my 2007 Macbook with a new 500 GB HD. Everything was great until I attempted to upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Flash player for safari. After uninstalling the old flash player I found it impossible to add the new one--or any other version. I decided to give up for a while until I could go into Apple for advice. I used chrome to watch Youtube, but the videos were totally choppy--freezing and suddenly speeding up--But the real worry is that the entire system is slow slow slow with endless beach balls. I've used utility first aid, Clean mymac, iboost, and tiddyup--each time things seemed better (or not as bad) but I still got beachballs and videos still impossible to watch. I also tried a suggested fix that involved pressing control>command>P.R while powering up. Today I managed to finally upgrade the flash player after upgrading to the newest version of Safari. But videos just as bad and still super slow with beach balls. I would greatly appreciate any new suggestions. Maybe the new HD is defect? I also upgraded to Snow Leopard last year. Thanks!

  • DVD Player in OS X Lion

I installed OS X 10.7 (Lion) a couple of days ago. Since then, I have had trouble getting my DVD Player to work. It starts up but crashes about a minute or two into any DVD.... I am not sure what my options are. (I can download VLC and use it, but I much prefer DVD Player...)

Did a clean Lion install on my Late 2009 MacBook and have also been experiencing consistent issues with DVD Player.  Upon launching (or attempting to), the application name appears along the top menu bar and icon appears in dock, but nothing else appears (player window or controls).  Secondary click on the dock shows "Force Quit" automatically.  This can happen whether I open DVD Player from Launchpad, dock, or Finder.
Seems to take about 3 or 4 attempts, then suddenly, it works.
    EDIT ...
Should note that this consistently happens when I immediately try launching DVD Player after waking MacBook (about the first 30 seconds to 1 minute).  I've also found that my Wi-Fi connection doesn't work during this time.  Snow Leopard did not behave this way on same machine.

  • DVD Player in OS X Maverick

We are running Maverick on MacBook Pro 2011 recently updated to Maverick.  We have tested a DVD and it does run, but it hangs when you try to move the handle to a certain time in the movie.  The movie works great in an iMAC with an older version of OS and DVD Player.
The DVD player that seems to be hanging is ver 5500.48.2 build 5.5f80 (1).  I did run Disk permission repair and repair on disk as well.
What do I need to do to make this work?

  • DVD Player problem after 10.4.7 upgrade

I don't know if I posted this to the right forum so I'll repost it here. Sorry for the repeat. Compared to others on this forum my problem seems trivial but it is still somewhat annoying. After installing 10.4.7 upgrade combo I can no longer use Apple's DVD player app. The app launches and recognizes DVDs but cannot make it through the title before it hangs. It responds to eject and quit. It informs me that skipping to the next chapter is not permitted and it does not crash. I have tried: dumping the prefs, fixing permissions, and re-running the updater. On the same machine if I reboot onto the other drive with 10.3.9 the DVD player (V 4.0 vs V 4.6.5) works as advertised. Any ideas?
    TIA
    Dave

I HATE FM! OK so I found the problem. I posted and got some ideas. I downloadsd Pacifist and re-installed DVD Player. (one version back 4.5 v 4.6.5) I removed all power from the machine for 10-15 minutes. The problem was still there. After giving up in disgust I left the computer alone for a day. This morning I figure I'll check out a DVD I just made using VLC. (afterall it still worked) So I stick the disk into the drive and DVD Player launches and I'm waiting for it to freeze and....@#% #@*& @#* *# % #*&^@! It works just fine! So I stick in the comercial DVD I had been testing with and its all better now. BUT I DON"T KNOW WHY!
    Sorry for the rant.
Thanks for all your kind help.

  • Dvd player does not work after Leopard upgrade

I installed Leopard, had to upgrade because my printer died and no printers now work with Tiger.  Since the upgrade, my DVD player does not work.  I have problems burning some cd's too.  Is this a known issue?  What is the fix?

I have read a couple of complaints like that, but not sure it's widespread.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
If that does NOT help, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that does NOT help then I suspect the optical drive or media itself, or possibly just needs a cleaning CD run on it.
