DVD Player always starts

Whenever I insert a DVD into my mini, DVD Player starts up. I do not always want this to happen - how do I deactivate the feature?

Open the CDs and DVDs preference pane and next to where it says 'when you insert a video DVD', select Ignore.
DVDs will then still spin up and mount on the desktop, and you can then manually perform whichever operation you require, whether playing with DVD player (or another application) or ripping with Handbrake etc.

  • DVD Player has started playing PAL DVD's on external PAL display very badly

I have my Early 2006 iMac connected to an external HDTV (Mini-DVI->HDMI)
Using display options I can switch the external display easily between NTSC and PAL refresh rates.
It used to be that apple's DVD player could play a PAL dvd just fine on the display but now the frame rate drifts in and out of sync as though it no longer understands that the TV is set to 50hz.
Although I used to use DVD player all the time I haven't done so for quite some months so I don't know when this started happening although I have a feeling that it was with a recent OS X update.
I say this because a few months ago all of a sudden the same thing happened with Elgato's EyeTV, but they issued a patch sometime later and it fixed the v-sync issue for their app.
I'm also wondering if it may be a de-interlacing issue rather than a v-sync issue but I'm not sure, I've tried various DVD's.
I have tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer but this hasn't helped.
If it's relevant, my iMac has an ATI Radeon X1600
Any ideas why DVD player has started having trouble with 50hz displays and how I might fix it?
Failing that, is there a good (hopefully free) dvd player alternative which is better at handing external displays of varying display modes?
p.s this was the most appropriate forum I could find.

I suggest that you create 15-second silent audio slug that you can use to move the audio the same amount you have moved the video.

  • Prevent DVD player from starting up when I insert a DVD

  • DVD player always comes up -How do I download home movies from DVD & Burn

Pretty dumb but I don't know how to do it.
I just want to download homemade DVD's and then edit and burn them or sometimes just burn them.
I tried looking at DVD Utility but I couldn't figure it out.
I have iMovie 08 and iDVD as well as Final Cut Express 4.

Open Users & Groups preferences, click on Login Items. Do you find it listed there? If you do select it then click on the Delete [-] button.

  • DVD Player will not Start Playing Disc Automatically...

I am not sure when exactly this feature stopped working... I have the most current version of the DVD Player program (App Version 5.0.1, Framework Version 5.0.3) and I have all the settings the same as I have always had (within the Preferences Menu: Player Tab: When DVD Player opens, start playing disc (checked) AND When A Disc Is Inserted, start playing disc (checked)...
Do I have any other configuration that needs to be set for this feature to work? The DVD Player works fine, but of course after I press PLAY and then I get the menu that pops up that asks me if I want to start the movie from the previous location, start the disc over, etc.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would try going to System Preferences CDs & DVDs pane, then set "When you insert a video DVD" to something else, such as "Ignore." After verifying that inserting a DVD does nothing except mount the disk to the desktop, reset it back to "Open DVD Player."
Sometimes, rewriting the preference file gets it working again.

  • Dvd player subtitles always on

since I upgraded to 10.6, DVD player always has subtitles on. This is happening with rented  dvd's.  no matter what I turn off in the control menus, subtititles are always displayed.  anyone else with this issue?

Just use another player like VLC and you will have full subtitlte control.
But the DVD Player does have a little control in its control panel in the upper right which you can repeatedly click to cycle through the available subtitle languages or turn the subtitle off.
It's the top right of those 6 control boxes.
Note, if those 6 controls are not showing grab the little slider (double lines) on the right and drag to the right to make it appear.

  • Can´t open some DVD´s in DVD player since I´ve got Lion-there was never such problem under snow Leopard

Can´t play some DVD´s in Apples DVD player, that run well onmy machine(s) before i`ve installed lion. Even if I say in system Preference "when inserting DVD-start DVD player, it starts, but can´t even select the DVD´s. They appear in finder, I can playém e.g. with VLC, but DVD player says "no DVD available"
( My OS is upgraded to 10.7.1)
    Can anyone fix it?

In my special case, it seems to be a slowly dying superdrive. Yesterday I´ve got a brand new DVD,which was not readable in my Imac. After some retries the drive simply ejected the disk.
`Cause I do not own a DVD-Player I went to a neighbour, where the dvd played fine. Now I realised after som tries, that my mac does not recognize any of my double density dvd´s. Single density works.
I think I will return my mac to the shop to get a new drive.

  • New Mac Mini won't open DVD Player, I get an error

This is a brand new mac mini (latest model bought two days ago), just opened and tried to open DVD player without any media on the DVD drive and the DVD Player doesn't open and I get this error:
    There was an initialization error.
A valid video device could not be found for playback (-70017)
    What could that be?
    Wilfredo.

No. The DVD Player always open even if there is no media in the drive.
The problem was the Region. I needed to set the region on the drive, but the error message never told what was the problem, I had to figure it out myself.

  • DVD player error

    I have a new 15" PowerBook.
The DVD player is not working.
I get the following message pop up:
    There was an initialization error
    Error: -43
Apple support say it is a software error and that I should wipe everything and reload.
I don't really want to go through all that and was just checking to see if anyone else had experienced this and maybe had a quick fix.

Im having problems with DVD player 4.6.5 on a Powerbook g4 1.5ghz 750 ram, os10.4.4
dvds start to play with a black screen and then freeze the whole system - even alt-apple-escape to force quit out of dvd player
    takes ages to respond
I went from os 10.3.3 to 10.4.0 (after a total disk erase, zeroed data) and did the update online straight after to 10.4.4
I also have 10.4.4 on a dual 450 g4 which I recently updated and it has none of the same problems
Im amazed that a solution to this is not easier to find on apples site - its obvious that it is happening to several people
    Has anyone found a solution???
Toast still seems to work fine so I think perhaps its something to do with the way the new os/dvd player decodes the video off the dvd - perhaps there is some incompatibility between hardware and software in this area?
I wonder from what version of DVD player this started happening - I had version 4.0 working fine when I was running os10.3.3
Does anyone know if quicktime is involved at all in the playing of dvds?? and if that might be causing a problem. I noticed a quicktime installer that goes a few versions backwards from 7.0.3 or 4 (never a good sign) but no explanation to say why on the download page
Powerbook g4 1.5ghz 750 ram (and while Im thinking of ram..... Im really annoyed at Apple for putting 2 x 256 ram chips in the powerbook g4. When I ordered a 512 ram chip along with the laptop I assumed it would take me up to 1gig but no - when I got the machine and opened it up I found out instead of apple putting one 512 chip inside that I would have to take one of the two 256 chips out in order to get the 512 one in!!!!! so I only got an extra 256meg for the price of 512 - and a 1gig chip costs 300euro!!! )

  • Some thing wrong in iTune , DVD Player , or may be with my keyboard

    hi every body
after installing the last update of mac lion os , iTune went crazy ,
itune was starting automatically every 30 secconds , even wehn i quit iTune , it start automatically .
actully first i thought only it's iTune , but after a while i get the action by DVD player too .
first i though some body is hacking me , but after disabling any device that is connected to out side of os things happends again .
i check forums about itune and many guys ask about iTune , but no body ask about DVD player , so i think may be it's keyboard signal bugs .
i am thinking maybe the "Play button" of keyboard is hitting automatically and by that iTune or DVD player appliaction starts .
dose any body have any idea ?!
    it's make me crazy
dose any body have this problem too ?!
how can i check which appliaction or which singlas is sent to itune or dvd player ?
    thanks you guys

    Hi Russel
After endless hours of trying to work around the same problem you have, I found the solution. The problem has to do with the script. For some strange reason the scripts become corrupted. I found out that the problem was corrected when I made a new script and connected the buttons to the new script. Hope they at apple find time to correct this problem in the future.
    Best. Ingvar

  • Discs not compatible anymore in my DVD player

    Hello,
I recently bought a mac pro with a pioneer 112 in. Now when I create a DVD using Encore they come up as incompatible in my Panasonic DMR-E55 dvd recorder. Never had this problem with my previous Pioneer 105 in a PC and am using the same discs.. Anybody have an idea?
ps. The DVD plays fine in my PS3

When you use the DVDs in the Mac Pro, does the DVD Player application start automatically? If not, they may not be in the UDF format required by most DVD players. Computers, and the PS3 may play other formats. Disk Utility will show the format of a DVD. It could also be a media problem. Try Verbatim DVD-R or DVD+R DL

  • DVD player 4.6.x  crashes Powerbookg4 1.5ghz

Dvd player does not work in Tiger
    I have put 10.4 and 10.4.5 onto a powerbookg4, 1.5ghz
When a dvd is opened in DVD player, DVD player will start, show a black screen, the counter will go to 7 seconds and then everything freezes!
Even a force quit doesnt work. The power button must be held down to turn the machine off.
The dvd drive is a Matshita DVD-r UJ-825
Does this drive need a firmware update?
Has anyone found a solution to this if they are experiencing it?
VLC will play the dvd fine.
Im amazed that this problem has existed since 10.4.0 and is still present in 10.4.5
Any version of Dvd player from version 4.6 onwards doesnt work.
If i boot of a 10.3.3 or a 10.3.9 partition dvd player works fine on the same laptop

    OK...
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This is a good procedure to follow after you've performed hard (power button) restarts.
    2. Are these commercial "Hollywood" DVDs (and I don't mean ripped-and-burned versions thereof)? Let's be sure the problem is occurring with good ol' legal DVDs... I presume that you've also tried several different Hollywood DVDs, i.e. the problem is not limited to a specific DVD, yes?
    3. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
    4. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following two folders:
    • Your Home > Library > Application Support folder
    • Your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player folder.
If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the pop-uo menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of these folders' Get Info windows.
    5. Trash the contents of the Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.
    6. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, restart, then immediately check Console for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    Good luck!

    Hi,
Here's one option you could try as it will give a good indication whether there is a hardware problem with the optical drive itself.
    Create a bootable Ubuntu CD
The Ubuntu CD you create should run as you boot the notebook ( as should your Recovery Discs ) , so if this will not run, the problem is almost certainly a Hardware issue with the DVD drive or the sata controller.
On another PC, follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if your noteboo will run this OS from the CD.  The 'try it' option does not need to install on the Hard Drive, it just runs from the CD.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Let me know if this will run.

  • MG5420 Won't print on DVD, it always prints on paper

    Hello,
I purchased the MG5420 a few days ago as an upgrade to an older Canon printer.  90% of my printing is on DVD's / BLU Rays.  I got one to print, and that was all.  Now, whenever I try to print on a DVD, it always starts printing to paper.  From the pretty bad My Garden software (which I just downloaded the newest version), there is no option to choose paper size J or the disc as a media.
And to top it off, I have tried 3 third party DVD printing software, and they can't print properely on this printer.
Help please...I just want to print on DVD's.  I don't care if it never prints on any other media.
