DVD player doesnt play movies

I have the HP dv7-1270us laptop with integrated blue ray dvd/cd drive
when i purchased this machine it has windows vista 64 bit. I have since upgraded to win 7 64 bit
This machine has been runing fine for 1 yr or so with this upgrade
I have NOT used the dvd drive before to play movies
It wont seem to play blockbuster movies
Is that normal - is there some type encryption preventing playback ?

Hi,
What type of media will not play Blockbuster movies? DVD or Blu-Ray?  Did you try both media types?
What movie playing software have you tried?
Try Windows Media Player on a standard DVD.  Does that work?
Try this free Blu-Ray player software and see if it works.

  • DVD player stopped playing movies, gives message

I'm a first time user and hope I'm doing this correctly.  I had to restart my computer in "safe mode" once and since then (maybe coincidentally) the DVD player gives this message "Modules needed for this application are missing.  If restarting the application does not fix the problem please reinstall the application.  Can anyone tell me what it means, why it's showing up now (and won't play DVDs) and how to fix it?  I'm not a skilled computer person.

Try downloading and installing the VLC Media Player.  It's free and can play DVD's along with just about any other media file.  It is fully self contained so even if there was a problem with your other DVD player software VLC would still work.  If that doesn't play DVD movies either then you are 99.9% certain it's a hardware failure, more than likely the drive itself as Jerry said.

  • Shapeshifter themes may prevent DVD Player from playing movie DVDs

A user on Apple Discussions reported that every time they played commercial DVDs they got an
    "Error: `nilP`"
When trying to play DVDs on their DVD Player software. Turned out the problem was a certain theme they had installed to use with http://www.unsanity.com/ 's Shapeshifter product. At the point of the writing of this FAQ, it is unknown which themes cause this issue. However, if you get this issue, please report the problem to the theme author and Unsanity so that the problem may be fixed. Always be sure that when you install system modification utilities like these that they are up to date for the operating system you are about to update to before updating to that operating system, and checking how to uninstall them if necessary before updating the operating system.

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • IMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's

iMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's. Other DVD/CD's are recognized.
My internal DVD/CD p-layer/burner stopped working 3 years ago like many other iMacs did.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is all red because I am ******!

I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.
I hope this information will be helpful to someone.

  • DVD player not playing DVDs

I can't seem to get my DVD player to play any of my movies. When I insert the dvd it doesn't show up on my desktop. The DVD Player doesn't start up until I start it(I have the option to 'open DVD Player) when I insert a DVD). I've tried several DVDs, all real dvd's, not burned or copied. I keep getting "Supported Disc Not Available". I haven't changed the region... I'm not even sure how to do that. I can still read and play music cd's. I've also tried using Front Row and I get "The DVd cannot be played... the format was not recognized".... well, They are the same DVDs I've watched befor so I'm wondering why... any thoughts befor I call up apple and get rejected since my warranty is shot.
    Thanks....

You might try to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and/or PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?

  • Control DVD Player to play specific chapters of inserted DVD?

(this question also posted in Automator discussion)
I would like to create an applescript that will instruct DVD player to play back certain chapters on a DVD. I want to send the script by email to a friend, so she can insert her copy of the DVD (The Yellow Submarine, actually), run my script, and view a "scripted" playback of chapters I've selected.
Even better would be the ability to determine edit points by time rather than chapter.
My applescript skills are weak--I can edit an existing script, but I don't have experience writing from scratch. Thanks very much for your suggestions.

  • DVD Player not playing video DVDs

This is a new problem on my MacBook Pro. The DVD player has played videos in the recent past with no problem. Now, when I insert a DVD, the computer attempts to read the disk (at least it sounds that way) and then ejects it. I have repaired permissions and researched on the discussion forums, even downloaded VLC to no avail. The CD player is working fine and all non-video DVDs are being read.

are these legit dvd's from the store or burnt DVD's? also try running a lens cleaner thru the system

  • Dvd player air play

I am unable to get the Mountain Lion DVD player to play video over air play (screen is grey and white checker board).  The audio is just fine.  If I turn air play off - the dvd is visible on my MacBook Pro screen.  I have a early 2011 MacBook Pro.

It's probably a DRM limitation dictated by the publisher of the DVD.

  • What standalone DVD player will play meg-4 files/movies? I.e. I want to burn a few of my converted movies onto a DVD disc

Is there a standalone DVD player that will play mpeg-4 files? I convert movies etc so I can put them into iTunes to watch on my iPad, apple tv etc......but want to get a DVD player that will also play those files..... But can't seem to find one.
    Does one exist?
I bought a player from Maplins which said on the front of the player mpeg-4 but doesn't even see the files.....it plays avi movies fine.
    Can anybody help!
    Thanks,

Why does it need to be a DVD Player? Would one of these not be better?
    http://www.ebuyer.com/274064-cyclone-micro-2-mkv-player-cyclone-micro-2-player
Or one of its competitors. Plays almost any video format you can throw at it, straight from a USB stick or Memory Card (so no burning of disks just to watch a movie once).

  • Dvd player wont play in full screen

Hello im using 10.5.5 and when I try to play a dvd in full screen it plays it for a while and then half the screen goes black and I can only see half of the movie, it was working fine before i updated to 10.5.5 any ideas howto solve this problem please ??/

I think DVD Player has some problems in 10.7.0. I can play DVDs but get the same symptoms as you as soon as I try to fast forward or similar. I think we need to wait for 10.7.1 for a fix. You could try VLC if you desperately need to play DVDs in the meantime.
BTW, you can get out of DVD player by using Command-Option (Alt)-Escape together, then clicking DVD Player and Force Quit on the window that appears.

  • Fussy DVD Player; will play Region 0 but plays Region 1 only occasionally.

DVD player has been freezing more of late but I have blamed that on library usage and mishandling of DVDs up to now. Now the problem has worsened to the point that most of the time commercial mainstream movies DVDs (region 1) will not play.
The flat 17" iMac has always been set on Region 1 and never been changed. I used a Region 2 disc just to see if it was recognized like my Region 0, which it was. I have not switched the 17' iMac from Region 1. Apparently commercially produced Region 1 DVDs are more demanding. I upgraded to OS 10.4.11 and the problem remains. However sometimes a Region 1 DVD will play after frequent tries. My thinking is that this may be a hardware issue, like the laser is dirty or faulty, maybe firmware, but not a software one. The 17 " iMac is now five years old and the DVD player has been in use everyday.
Why the difference in playback between Region 0 and Region 1? How come it will recognize a Region 2 disc but only rarely a Region 1? Has anyone else had a similar problem and resolved it? Any suggestions on how to fix a dirty or faulty laser? Is there a firmware fix?
    C.J. Beck

You don't say where you are, but I suspect it is the USA?
Your DVD Player is set for the region where you purchased your Mac. Region 1 is the USA, Region 2 is Europe. (Region 0 is non-regional, for the DVDs you make yourself, and has no effect on the following).
You can only change that setting up to five times, after which it is carved in stone for all eternity, as it is embedded in the firmware of your Superdrive. There is no hack for making a Mac multi-regional like there is for stand-alone DVD players.
If you want to play DVDs from a different region to your own, use your stand-alone DVD player and TV, not the Mac!

  • Turning DVD Player into a .mov file?

Rencectly,I recorded from my camera and converted it into a program named "DVD Player" and it only opens with it,when I insert the disc it shows it up,but the disk has files named "VIDEO_TS" and "VIDEO_RM" Is there anyway to convert it into a .mov? Here are the files that are inside these files:
    VIDEO_RM
    VIDEO_TS

The presence of the Video_ files indicates that this is a DVD that is meant to be played in a DVD player.
If the disk is not a commercial product then there are programs available that will rip the dvd and make it possible to convert it.
Discussions about doing this are not allowed here (in fact this post may not make it). The best I can say is google what you are looking to do.

  • DVD Player not playing discs

My DVD player won't play rental dvd's etc .. I get a message saying "Supported Disk Not Available"
I have successfully played on 2 dvd's on this machine (it's only 2 weeks old) and each of those times i got a message asking my permission to change the region settings plus a warning that i would only be able to change the settings 5 times ... this third attempt at watching a movie (a big reason i bought the 2nd machine - to watch dvd's in my bedroom) it now gives me the 'not supported' message
    HELP!!!!!

After some research I tried a suggestion from another forum to repair disk permissions - so far so good (at least the dvd i was trying to watch played no problem)
I did see numerous posts in my travels where people had experienced exactly the samr thing that I had - is there a bug Apple???
