"DVD player encountered a system error, error: -36"

I burned video with iDVD and when I try to play the dvd I get a message which states, "DVD player encountered a system error, error: -36". One DVD disk will not play at all and keeps trying to load. Another DVD disk will load, but will say that there is a system error. Anyone know about this problem?

Type -36 error (I/O Errors (bummers)
This file is having difficulty while either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file
may have been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be damaged.
This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.
Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a disk recovery software, such as Disk First Aid to examine the disk. You can try rebooting with all extensions off. Once in a while this will allow you to read the data. The file in question should be restored from a backup that was stored on a different disk. Regular backups can reduce the time to recover from this error.
My first guess is that you used poor quality DVD media. Maxell and Verbatim are good.

    UPDATE: APPLE DVD PLAYER ERROR
If I move the scroll forward or backward to a certain spot, the movie always goes back to the beginning but the time indicator remains moving forward.
So, (lets say) in an 1h 20 mins movie, if you scroll too many times, (no matter forward or backward) you may end up having 2h 10 mins elapsed time, when in reality you are actually at just the beginning of a movie!
During this phase, I can't stop, or go to title menu. A message pops up saying: No Permitted. The funny thing is, I have 8 .dvdmedia files, and only 3 of them that actually show this weird behavior.
    DVD discs are all ok.

  • DVD player encountered a system error - the viewer could not be moved to the selected screen

Hi, I am getting this error when I am trying to play .dvdmedia content with the DVD player and Airplay mirroring on an Apple TV 3rd generation. The screen remains gray, the sound is still on. I am running the latest OS X 10.9, and the firmware of the Apple TV is up to date, too. Any ideas? Thx Dom

I have the same configuration as dog.toy.tough, and encountered the same problem trying to use  DVD player & Airplay.
I then tried  viewing the same DVD with "MPlayerX" and it worked flawlessly!  I don't really understand what Rudegar is saying about encryption, and it would be great to be able to use the native apple DVD player some day ... but in the meantime I will continue to use MPlayerX.  It's free and you can download it from the App Store.

  • DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from

When I try to play a disk that has been burned on a VCR/DVD combo machine, I very often get an error message that says:
"DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from
There was an error reading from disc. It might be scratched or dirty. [-36]"
and then it quits. Sometimes I have been able to play a disc, after several tries, as it errors later and later, but also sometimes not.

  • DVD Player "skipping over damaged section" error message after long pauses

On both Imac or macbook (both 10.6.7), when watching a DVD using DVD Player, if I pause a DVD for a while and come back to the application after a few minutes, after click play, I get an error message "Skipping over damaged section" and the dvd skips forward some 30 seconds. I know this has nothing to do with the disk itself (it is not damaged).

I'm also experiencing this on an iMac running 10.6.8.

  • DVD Player destroying my system after Mavericks "upgrade"

I watched a movie rented from RedBox last night, using my iMac's DVD Player app.  When the movie was over, my computer automatically ejected the movie and I shut it down.  This morning, all **** has broken loose.  It's taken more than an hour to get it operational.  DVD Player was still in my dock, open and running.  Safari and Mail were still running, according to the dock, but were inoperable.  I could not force quit anything.  Everything was frozen or the desktop didn't load completely at all.  I shut the whole **** thing on and off many times -- proper shutdown when allowed but turned off via the power button on the back of the computer and by turning off the electricity to the machine.  FINALLY, I was able to make the computer work well enough to force quit Safari, Mail, and DVD Player (in that order).  What has happened here?  What a nightmare Mavericks has made of my beloved computer.
Is anybody else having so many problems with Mavericks?  And / or with DVD Player?
    Thank you!

I have read a couple of complaints like that, but not sure it's widespread.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
If that does NOT help, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that does NOT help then I suspect the optical drive or media itself, or possibly just needs a cleaning CD run on it.

  • Hooking up DVD Player/Home Theater System to my Powerbook???

I was wondering if I could connect my one piece dvd player that is also a home theater amplifier to my powerbook. The player has the usual connectors, RCA, S-Video, and Component outs. Is there a way to hook it up so the video is displayed on my tiny 12 inch powerbook?
BTW, it's an one year old powerbook.

    Anyone???

  • DVD Player system error: - 69902

DVD Player encountered a system error: - 69902
I can play a DVD using front row but unable to play one using Apple DVD player.
I also can no longer burn anything to a disc, when I insert a blank DVD or CD the finder window says the disc in unreadable no matter how many different ones I place into the drive. I can however burn a CD using iTunes. I'm confused.
I noticed this last night after attempting to burn a copy of photos for a friend to a disc. I was able to do this before I installed Leopard.
I'm using a Macbook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 2 GB memory and have installed the update firmware.

Thats very weird because front row uses apple dvd player to play dvd's.
Is your macbook still covered by warranty because it sounds like the update has affected your drive and it would be best to get them to check it as soon as possible.
If it is out of warranty I do know of another way to try and fix it that a lot of others have done and said has worked when they could do nothing with the drive.
Let me know whether your under warranty or if apple will fix it. If not I will tell you what to do.
    Dib.

  • DVD Player error -69902?

I've successfully played DVDs on my iMac (24" 2.4 GHz Aluminum) -- Front Row works like a charm! However, I've recently encountered a DVD that has issues with my computer:
A couple of weeks ago I received the Beatles' "Help!" two-DVD set in timely fashion after ordering it through Amazon.ca. Unfortunately, although the second disc works perfectly on my computer (a 2007 Apple iMac 24" 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB of RAM), the first disc will not play past the FBI warning and the opening page (where Play, Subtitles, Settings, Chapters is located). Whether I use either Front Row or DVD player, the result is the same: when I insert the disc into my computer, I am presented with the error message "Skipping Over Damaged Area". If, in DVD Player, I click on "Title" in order to change chapters, an error message pops up informing me "DVD Player encountered a system error. Error -69902". And in DVD Player, I am informed that this disc contains only one chapter. In any case, when I'm on the Help! opening page & I click on "Play" (in either DVD player or Front Row), nothing happens. No movie. The music keeps looping on the opening page, but not much more than that.
Out of curiosity, I tried playing this same disc on a standalone Toshiba DVD player hooked up to my home TV, and amazingly, the disc plays fine!
After emailing Amazon, I was instructed to return the DVD for a replacement, which arrived in the mail today. Imagine my surprise when the replacement displayed the same error messages! Before I return this disc for a refund, maybe someone can fill me in: what is DVD Player error -69902?

  • Mac Pro 2014 DVD Player -70017 error: VLC OpenGL is not supported

I am setting up my new 2014 Mac Pro from a mid 2010 Mac Pro via VNC (Finder/Go/Connect to Server) as I only have the Apple 30" Cinema display which is connected to my 2010.  I was encountering problems:
    1) DVD player would never start, giving the error "DVD Player encountered a system error Error: -70017."  If you hit OK the message dismisses and DVD player exits.  There is a CNET article that states a -70012 error can happen if you don't have an internal drive.  This is, of course, true for the 2014 Mac Pro.
    2) VLC gives the error when opening a VIDEO_TS file on disk  "OpenGL acceleration is not supported on your Mac.  Your Mac lacks Quartz Extreme acceleration ....".  It does play videos, but they play extremely slow.
After a hour on the line with Apple Support we determined that the problem is VNC .  VNC connections disable some drivers.  I connected the keyboard and monitor directly to the 2014 Mac Pro, and both programs worked perfectly.  With the programs working I then moved the monitor back to the 2010 and tried to resume playback using VNC.  The errors returned.
Just wanted to pass this info along in case someone else encounters the same issue.

Same problem here but a slight twist.
2011 iMac running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 with DVD player 5500.38.2
2009 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 with DVD player 5500.38.2
DVD rips with RipIt, stored on a NAS.
iMac will play the rips through DVD player.
Mac Mini will not play rips through DVD player, but will play through VLC.
Mac Mini previously worked, but not sure what version OSX it was running then, could have been pre-Mountain Lion.
Curious about what's causing this.  It's a bit frustrating!

  • Having trouble with apple DVD player playing Mpeg-2 file

I have this error on my ibook when i try to play an mpeg-2 file recently created through HD - Export/Using quicktime conversion.
The error from Apple DVD player is Dvd Player encountered a system error. could not detect a valid media file. [-70001]
Is there something Iam doing to this when i cut it? I have the same problem on both my laptop exppress harddrive, desktop express version 2.
Is tere a different way I should do this?
    Thanks

    Hello Richard,
That error code suggests that the region code has been changed 5 times. You can only change the region 5 times in iDVD.
    Have a look in here
for some alternate players. There are some really good ones.
    I hope that helps some.
