DVD Player freezes when ajusting sound...

The DVD Player freezes every time I try to ajust the sound or pause the movie or change chapters. Most of the time it will sit there with the spinning beach ball and not do anything. This happens also when using Front Row. Is this software or hardware related? Its version 4.6.5 firmware 4.6.8, thanks for reading this.

Specs are 2.0 GHz Intel, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD. I make sure that no other programs are running while watching a DVD, and I have no other problems like this with any other programs, so far. So I am sure that its not due to lack of memory or proccesser speed. I will try 'Repair Permissions' and see what happens.

  • Apple DVD Player freezing PowerBook when power adapter unplugged

I've got a 15" 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook (previous generation, bought in August 2005) with 1Gb RAM and a Combo drive, running OSX 10.4.2 (not 10.4.3)
When I play DVD movies through Apple's DVD player, and then eject the disc (by clicking the eject button in the DVD player window), everything is normal, until I unplug the power adapter (while the computer is running, but without the DVD in the drive). Then, everything freezes - the pointer locks up, the keyboard locks up, everything. The only way to get out of this is to hold the power button down.
What could be causing this? Is it because I'm ejecting the disc while it's essentially still playing (I keep on forgetting to press the "Stop" button)?
It's also only started doing this since I installed drivers for my new Epson Stylus D88 printer - could this be a problem?
I've repaired permissions, and that seems to have done nothing.
Note: Apple DVD Player is not running when I unplug the power adapter, nor is the DVD in the drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help

I've found out that it's not actually a total freeze, it's a 10 second hang and I'm impatient!!
But, during the hang, it appears as if everything is frozen.
I'll contact Epson - I downloaded an update to the printer driver, but that doens't seem to have done anything. I can't uninstall the printer driver, as I'm currently at university, and I don't have the installer CD with me for the printer.

  • DVD Player Freezes Up

I'm having an issue with my DVD player. I start to watch a disc, and first of all there is no sound, even though there is sound on my system. Then after about 10 seconds, the image freezes even though the timer keeps running.

Ran across a similar issue several months ago.
It only happened under a specific set of conditions.
Are you running any other programs while you are trying to watch the DVD?
Open activity monitor and see what your processors are doing. Are one or more pegged?
I tend to multitask when watching DVDs on the computer - generally web browsing so my attention isn't too divided
I found a Firefox extension was consuming huge amounts of processor time, which in turn caused DVD playback to act in a similar manner to what you describe.

  • My DVD Player hangs when trying to change the regional code the first time

    Hello,
I am new to this forum and I couldn't find one for the DVD Player specific so I chose this one. Please direct me to a different one if my eyes were misleading me.
I have a new Macbook. Just over three month now and I attempted to watch a movie with the DVD Player last night the first time. When inserting the DVD, the DVD player comes up with a Screen asking me to change the Regional Code from 6 to 1. I don't understand this in the first place since I purchased my Mac within the US. But anyway, When I unlock it with my password and then click the "Set Regional Code" Button (Regional Code preset to one at this time), it turns blue and then the rainbow wheel for being busy shows up. Unfortunately it never leaves and going to the activity monitor it says (Not responding). That causes bad Windows Memories .
Tried multiple ways, let it run for 10 hours and it never returns to the world. Very frustrating, since this is the first time I tried to use this feature.
Is there any advice on how to set this to Regional Code 1. I only have to set it once, but I think there must be an option.
And yes, I know of VLC, but I still would prefer to use this regular DVD player. I think this should work somehow.
Computer out of the box, nothing other then iWorks and MS Office 2008 installed.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks a lot

Does the account you are using have admin rights? I found this :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
+In Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and later, users with administrative privileges aren't prompted to change the region the very first time a DVD-Video disc of a single region is inserted. Instead, the region of the DVD drive is automatically set to the region of the DVD disc that was inserted. Accounts that don't have administrative privileges must authenticate with an administrator account name and password, because changing the drive's region code requires administrative privileges.+
Sounds like it might be worth a try from an admin account first.

  • DVD's played on external DVD player freezing

I'm burning some DVD's on my MacPro but when i pop that DVD into a DVD player connected to my TV, it seems to freeze up. Any ideas?? thanks

    Hi V
Yes there are several possible origins to this:
    • burning the DVD with x16 speed often gives so much errors that they doesnt work
    • using a cheap brand - same
    • wrong type of DVD
    • to little free space on internal (start-up) hard disk
    1. I make a DiskImage then use Toast™ to burn with x1 speed (one can use Apple Disk Util tool to do this - in iDVD08 one can select burn-speed)
    2. I use Verbatim DVD-R
    3. I use -R no +R or +/-RW disks
    4. iDVD needs 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. 10Gb might work but slow.
<5Gb if it reaches to goal - most probably an useless DVD disk is the result.

  • DVD Player hangs when Fast Forward (F9) or Rewind (F7) buttons pushed

When I push and hold down the fast forward and rewind keys in DVD Player, the video does indeed fast forward and reverse. But when I push and immediately release, the picture freezes, and the computer hangs. Cannot do shut down, have to do shut down by holding on/off button and then restarting.
Very frustrating, lost a bunch of notes I was taking while watching the lecture. Any thoughts?
    Sigh,
    Dave

Also, if you're at the computer or have a wireless keyboard, hold down the apple key (command) and and press an arrow key for FF and RW. Pressing again should step up the speed, depending on the capabilities of the 11D. Mine (104D) can FF up to . . . I think it's 32 times?
If you have the apple remote, it's press and hold.

  • Flash and DVD player freeze

After roughly a day of my MacBook Pro being on, flash video starts causing all browsers to freeze systematically (pinwheel until force quit). Non-video flash content plays normally. A reboot always solves the problem, and it always returns after another day or so.
It's been 2 weeks, and since then I've noticed that as flash videos start freezing up browsers, DVD player also freezes up when trying to play a DVD, and After Effects gets stuck on loading (Initializing Media Core). The reboot resets all those symptoms.
Seems to me that something is wrong with OS-wide video playback. I'm not absolutely positive that Flash is causing the problem, but I feel that it is.
    Ideas appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Yi

    Some additional info:
I have acquainted myself with the plethora of Flash problems mentioned elsewhere in Discussions and around the web, but none of the problem mentioned there seemed to be reset by a simple reboot, and then keep coming back. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Flash and my browsers, and I've tried repairing permissions and repairing the disk a few times.
    Thanks,
    Yi

  • DVD Player freezes after updating to 10.4.10

I have never had an update issue, but now I've got one to make up for all of them! Ever since I updated to 10.4.10, DVD player will freeze and say "Error Reading disc" or something like that. Any suggestions?

I have the same issues. When playing a Video_TS file from my hard drive of from a disc, it will get about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way thru and then it freezes and won't go any further. Please Help.

  • DVD Player freezes

When I put in a DVD ocassionally the DVD Player will freeze. The application will not force quit and the DVD will not eject. I tried to play Star Wars Ep I for my son today and with the first 30 seconds it froze up. However, Ep I plays just fine in my PB G4.
After force quiting the application the first time, the DVD Player quit, but when I tried to reopen it I got error code 600.
A couple of weeks ago, I called AppleCare about this issue and they told me to quit all apps before playing a DVD. This problem occurs even when all apps are closed. Any suggestions? Is this happening to anyone else?

    Charles,
Without more information I can't be of much help. I would suggest that you try using VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html on the same disks to see if it can handle it. Apple's DVD Player usually lets you know if there are minor issues with the program chain/PGC (except if the instructions actually halt playback and prevent forward access through programmer error). Since your DVD's have backup information files (.BUP backs up .IFO), the issues are more likely in the VOB (video object files) themselves, or something in the physical layer.
It's possible that the player lens isn't aligned correctly or is dirty, however this usual results in an error from dvd player. Freezes shouldn't happen. It's possible there is a load issue and you could take a look at the logs or the activity monitor to see what's going on.
On the hardware side, it's possible you have an issue with your graphics chipset or more likely a thermal problem. You may want to isolate this issue by playing a few disks consecutively while hammering the machine (running a lot of apps/thrashing) if it doesn't happen due to heat then you're at least eliminating one thing.
I'm sure someone more informed than myself about the player will come up with a simple answer, but it shouldn't happen so please let us know what you can determine as to when it occurs:
Does this occur with one title in particular?
    A few titles?
    All DVDs?
Does it randomly occur with no relation to the title (The Matrix may freeze one time and play fine another time)?
    Does VLC remedy the situation?
    Good Luck,

  • DVD Player freezes video playback, but audio continues

Whenever I insert a DVD into my Macbook Pro, DVD Player starts playing the DVD's audio, but the video playback will only run if I have my mouse positioned at the bottom of the screen. If the mouse is moved anywhere toward the middle of the video, it freezes on the image while audio playback continues. This has happened with multiple DVDs and all run fine on any other player (VLC, etc).

I have the same issue fairly regularly with DVDs when played back using the Apple DVD Player app.  The same DVDs work fine with VLC.
While rebooting helps, it doesn't actually fix anything.  The same goes for resetting PRAM and other stuff.  The problem persists, albeit intermittently.  I've rebooted and have had a DVD exhibit the same exact problems right away.  And then I try VLC and it runs fine.
There are three variables that I can point to...
Apple DVD Player application... as noted above, the issue does not occur at all with VLC
Memory... it's possible that the Apple DVD Player app hits on a bad stretch of memory, it causes this kind of problem.  Still this points to the application as the issue does not occur in other playback apps.
Video Card...  on my macbook pro it's the NVIDIA 320M.  Again, the playback is fine in other playback apps, so this still points back to the Apple DVD Player app, but it's possible that it has issues with the video card
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.  I hope Apple will fix the problem, and I'm OK with using VLC until it gets fixed, but there is at least one feature of Apple's DVD Player app that I love...  it remembers exactly where I was at even if I take the DVD out to play something else.  VLC Player does not appear to have that functionality (at least not that I've found thus far).

  • DVD Player Freezing

Hey there. I'm a big multitasking fan and like to watch DVDs on my laptop while I'm doing some pretty mindless word processing. So, I shrink the viewer to something pretty small and put it next to the word processing window.
Problem is when I've got Pages, DVD player, and Camino open, the computer freezes. No spinning wheel of death, just a literal freeze.
Now, I regularly edit HD video, have whole components of FCP studio open, etc and my MBP with 4GB of RAM handles it all beautifully. So, really, is the DVD player sucking up so many resources that I can't word process with the DVD player going?

Well, then it's got to be one of the other applications. I'd suspect camino over pages, but try them individually to see if they work. It could be some funky way each is accessing framework extensions or other system resources. I'd imagine all of those are running media browser and media access services/frameworks and if there's a conflict then it could freeze the system. It's bizarre that it does, but it seems to be happening here.

  • DVD Player Freezes Occasionally

My white MacBook (running OS X 10.4.11, purchased August 2006) occasionally freezes while playing DVDs. This happens very inconsistently, perhaps once for every five or more DVDs I play. While the film is playing, with no input from me, the computer becomes nonresponsive (i.e. I can't change the volume, none of the keyboard keys work, I can't control/pause the movie), the mouse still visibly moves on the screen, but it is a spinning rainbow wheel for several minutes. The funny thing is, the movie continues playing as if nothing is wrong, but I have no control over it. Eventually the problem either resolves itself, or I force quit (which does not work immediately, but does force the program to quit after a few minutes).
I run software update and none needs updating. I scoured Apples help fields and these discussion forums and did not see anyone else having this problem. Please direct me to a helpful thread, if I missed it.

I would first run disk utility and repair permissions. Then I would delete the plist file. It's here:
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDplayer.plist
Then restart DVD player and see if it works like it should.
If it's still acting up I would try playing the dvd with VLC, it's free and you can get it here:

  • DVD Player freezing my computer

I have one DVD that will not play in DVD Player. It starts playing and then freezes on the legal notice. And it doesn't just freeze the application, it freezes the whole computer, and my computer screen starts flashing to black for split seconds at regular intervals. All I can do is a hard shut down with the power button. There's nothing out of the ordinary with the disc that I can tell. It's brand new without any scratches. DVD Player plays other DVDs just fine.
    Things I've tried:
Playing the DVD using VLC: No problem at all. Plays just fine.
Playing the DVD in DVD Player in a different user account: Still freezes the computer.
Playing the DVD on my family's PowerPC iMac G5: Plays in DVD Player without a hitch.
Playing the DVD on my brother's Intel MacBook Pro exactly like mine: Plays in DVD Player just fine.
Deleting DVD Player and CDInfo preferences & restarting: Still freezes my computer in DVD Player.
Now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong?
    Thanks!

One more thing I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling DVD Player and repairing permissions. It didn't work. The DVD is still freezing my computer in DVD Player. Any ideas anyone?

  • DVD Player freezes and quits midway through movie

    Hello,
I tried to find a topic like this already in existence, but I had no luck, so I decided to post one of my own. Today my DVD Player has been acting up. I rented a couple of DVDs from Blockbuster and tried to watch them on my computer. The one I watched yesterday worked fine. Today, however, the player froze up and went to spinning beach ball of death about halfway through the movie. It suggested I check the DVD for scratches, and I did, but it's fine. Just in case, though, I tried to put in another movie. This time, the DVD got through the previews and to the menu before doing the same thing. Can somebody give me an idea as to what is going on and how I can fix it? Is my computer just 'tired' from being on all day?

Yup same problem here, started after I upgraded to 10.6.4 in late June, when my MacBook Pro was less than 2 months old.
Apple replaced the optical drive, same problem.
The fix can be easy such as restarting the DVD player or ejecting the disc and putting it back in, to rebooting the laptop. When it won't read the disc at all I have to do an optical drive reset, which always fixes the problem, for awhile anyway.
I've struggled with trying to duplicate the problem- I've been in to the genius bar four times now and they say they can't do anything more until I can duplicate it. I've done an archive install, they suggest a clean install which I'm reluctant to do at this point.
It seems to be related to-
    1) how long the computer has been running since the last reboot- a day of surfing increases chances of error
    2) power- if I go on battery power for awhile I'll almost always get a quits unexpectedly. That seems to be the start of a downward slide, where eventually it won't read a disc at all. It's also telling that an optical drive reset, which resets the power to the optical drive, always fixes the problem.
Turns out the power cord was slowly going south, which multiplied the number of dvd errors. Apple gave me a new power cord late August and the dvd errors are less frequent, tho still 2-3x/week.
The quits unexpectedly errors are usually SIGSEGV and SIGBUS.

  • Why is my DVD project freezing when a video clip plays?

    Hi -
I have a simple Encore(CS5 Mac) project that is that is "stalling" when played.
The content of the DVD is made from an After Effects(CS5.5 Mac) project so I think I should provide information on that.  The 30sec AE project is mostly timeline animation until the last 6 seconds which is video footage.   The 7 second video clip is scaled way down from it's original dimensions and then masked off to fit in an area of the AE stage.
I rendered the AE project to a QT MOV with No compression.  In this format it was a very large file (939MB) but it played flawlessly in Quicktime on my desktop.
Then I brought that MOV into Encore as a timeline, added a one button menu,  and burned a DVD.
The prpoject plays fine until that video comes on. At that instant - the picture freezes for a few seconds - then plays for a second and then freezes again.  It does this stop and go until the video ends and then the DVD returns to the simple opening menu.
It seems to choke at the same time each time I replay it but I can't be 100% sure.  It's almost as if the disc actually stops spinning.
Why would the DVD freeze when the video content of my DVD project played?  What can I do to fix this?
    TIA some expert advice.
    JL

While I am familiar with the brand name, Imagtion, I do not know what their business model is. Some companies, like Memorex buy the cheapest blank media of that day, and rebrand it, with their logo. Others do the same thing. Poor quality blank media can cause all sorts of issues, such as hanging and skipping - hence my question.
I would do a test burn with high-quality blank media, such as Falcon, Taiyo-Yuden or Verbatim, and then burn about 4x on the speed. Test to see if that disc plays, without the skipping and hangling.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
