DVD Player Hangs

Since Leopard upgrade a DVD that plays fine on a regular player will not play on iMac. It plays for a while then hangs while a message says "skipping over damaged area". Had to power off to get out of DVD Player. Coould not get to force quit.

Ah, many thanks. I was looking in the main Library folder. Have now deleted it so will give it a go. Fingers crossed!

  • DVD Player hangs when Fast Forward (F9) or Rewind (F7) buttons pushed

When I push and hold down the fast forward and rewind keys in DVD Player, the video does indeed fast forward and reverse. But when I push and immediately release, the picture freezes, and the computer hangs. Cannot do shut down, have to do shut down by holding on/off button and then restarting.
Very frustrating, lost a bunch of notes I was taking while watching the lecture. Any thoughts?
    Sigh,
    Dave

Also, if you're at the computer or have a wireless keyboard, hold down the apple key (command) and and press an arrow key for FF and RW. Pressing again should step up the speed, depending on the capabilities of the 11D. Mine (104D) can FF up to . . . I think it's 32 times?
If you have the apple remote, it's press and hold.

  • My DVD Player hangs when trying to change the regional code the first time

    Hello,
I am new to this forum and I couldn't find one for the DVD Player specific so I chose this one. Please direct me to a different one if my eyes were misleading me.
I have a new Macbook. Just over three month now and I attempted to watch a movie with the DVD Player last night the first time. When inserting the DVD, the DVD player comes up with a Screen asking me to change the Regional Code from 6 to 1. I don't understand this in the first place since I purchased my Mac within the US. But anyway, When I unlock it with my password and then click the "Set Regional Code" Button (Regional Code preset to one at this time), it turns blue and then the rainbow wheel for being busy shows up. Unfortunately it never leaves and going to the activity monitor it says (Not responding). That causes bad Windows Memories .
Tried multiple ways, let it run for 10 hours and it never returns to the world. Very frustrating, since this is the first time I tried to use this feature.
Is there any advice on how to set this to Regional Code 1. I only have to set it once, but I think there must be an option.
And yes, I know of VLC, but I still would prefer to use this regular DVD player. I think this should work somehow.
Computer out of the box, nothing other then iWorks and MS Office 2008 installed.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks a lot

Does the account you are using have admin rights? I found this :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
+In Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and later, users with administrative privileges aren't prompted to change the region the very first time a DVD-Video disc of a single region is inserted. Instead, the region of the DVD drive is automatically set to the region of the DVD disc that was inserted. Accounts that don't have administrative privileges must authenticate with an administrator account name and password, because changing the drive's region code requires administrative privileges.+
Sounds like it might be worth a try from an admin account first.

  • DVD player hangs when I insert blank DVD

When I insert a DVD into my Mac Pro, the DVD recorder/player stops working!! I have to reboot my machine and it starts working OK. This is happening more and more often. Any Idea why and how to solve the problem?

I have a 2 month old iMac and yesterday it stopped accepting DVD/CDs.  Don't know if that's what you meant by "hangs".  If I restart my computer, the DVD/CD will work and I can insert/eject normally.  I have a trouble call into Apple.  They're supposed to call me in a couple hours.  I'll let you know what happens.

  • MacBook pro using Yosemite dvd player is hanging

With a MacBook Pro using Yosemite 10.10.1 when I try to show a DVD, the player hangs whenever I try to scan forward or backward. This happens regardless of whether I use the controls drop down menu or the buttons on the controller. The DVD Player info says App Version: 5500.56, Framework Version: 5.9.0.
    thanks for any help.

You need a Thunderbolt or mini DisplayPort to composite converter like this one:

Yikes, unless you can find one for much less than that, I'd put than kind of money toward a TV with HDMI connections.

  • DVD Player v5.4 beginning to hang rather than play

I am running a Mac Pro tower with OS X 10.6.8 in it. I use it for many tasks including previewing commercially made DVDs.  Up until two days ago it worked perfectly.  Then it started hanging.  When I put a DVD into the computer it is recognized and DVD Player starts.  The disc loads and shows the typical Warning message regarding not pirating the disc then at the spot where this warning should leave the screen, the player hangs.  None of the buttons on the remote work.  Trying to eject the disc gets a message stating the disc can't be ejected as it is being used by DVD Player.  The only way to stop the program is to use a Force Quit.  This, naturally, sends a message to apple detailing what was happening. I allow this message to be sent.
The discs are not defective as they play just fine in my ancient iMac and on my blu ray DVD player.
Is it possible to load a fresh copy of just the DVD player or do I need to do a reinstall of the OS?
Thanks for any suggestions sent this way.

Does it display a Menu at the end of the presentation / movie? If so, open Map View and select the very first or top box and hit the delete key. You'll see a "puff" and then it's no longer an Autostart Dvd but rather you'll now see a Menu at the very start of the Dvd.
In the past one had to drag and drop the movie or slideshow to the first box where it says "drag content here" for it to be an AutoStart Dvd. But the software engineers made a little change where it now at times defaults to an AutoStart Dvd.
Some folks on this forum suspect it's apple's attempt at trying to make iDvd easier to use. But in reality, it's actually making for the reverse scenario since many mac users don't particularly appreciate this added / default feature .
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Dvd-player/vlc player/xine-player hang when disc starts

lately all my players hang when i get my dvd-hardware startet. the dvd-screen pops up, several seconds of the movie are shown and then it hangs (ends just by quit now). i´ve tried with dvd-player, vlc-player and xine-player. one week ago all (at least dvd-player and vlc-player) worked perfectly well - i don´t understand ?! btw i´m talking of original discs. software is updated, i´m working with 10.6.8

Thank you for the response. I have checked it, and it says (i've dutch language) something i would translate to English as "System sound output". Is that preference for all discs? I would assume so. But DVD-player plays some discs without sound, and some with sound. So maybe it is codec related? But i would not know how to check that... (when i try to see what codec, audio says it is dts, and i assume dts audio should be no problem?)

  • Movies stall or hang up when playing on  DVD player

I've used both IDVD 5 and iDVD 6 but the problem continues. DVD's tend to "hang up" or "stick" at multiple scenes when playing on a DVD player. The same problem occurs on all sorts of DVD player of family and friends. This issue does not happen when playing the DVD on a computer. The movies are created in iMovie and the sent to iDVD with Themes added and then burned. I've tried disc immaages vs a burn - same result.
Any ideas what is causing this problem and how to overcome?

My iMac G5 is 2 months old, so probably not an issue. I am currently using Memorex 16X DVD's, but get the stall, hang up and freeze problem when playing on DVD players. This is not an issue playing back on computers. I started making movies on a Dell a year ago using Microsoft Movie Maker and experienced the same problem. Totally different systems, different applications...but the same issue.
All sorts of makes DVD players both in the U.S. and England and Canada have problems playing my DVDs.
I have tried saving as a disc image and the burning, but not a solution.
Is Toast better than using Apple's iDVD or disk utility to burn DVD's. Is there any way to control burn speed? Does Toast allow different burn speeds? Should I use 16X DVD's or 8X or whatever?

  • What do I do with my DVD player after hanging a flat screen?

I am looking at going flat screen and getting a wall mount but do not know what options there are for DVD player and other accessories.  Are there products for hanging them on the wall also?  Any cordless options? I really don't know these things, please help!

go in to your nearest best buy store and ask for these products:
Sanus - Wall-Mount Shelf System for A/V Components. (4 products. ranges from 149 to 449.)
they have like 4 different types. allows you to mount audio/video devices on the wall as well. and they give you cable managements to hide your wires too. pretty neat. and then ask for the monster cable hider thingy to hide the rest of your cables.

  • DVD Player problem after 10.4.7 upgrade

I don't know if I posted this to the right forum so I'll repost it here. Sorry for the repeat. Compared to others on this forum my problem seems trivial but it is still somewhat annoying. After installing 10.4.7 upgrade combo I can no longer use Apple's DVD player app. The app launches and recognizes DVDs but cannot make it through the title before it hangs. It responds to eject and quit. It informs me that skipping to the next chapter is not permitted and it does not crash. I have tried: dumping the prefs, fixing permissions, and re-running the updater. On the same machine if I reboot onto the other drive with 10.3.9 the DVD player (V 4.0 vs V 4.6.5) works as advertised. Any ideas?
    TIA
    Dave

I HATE FM! OK so I found the problem. I posted and got some ideas. I downloadsd Pacifist and re-installed DVD Player. (one version back 4.5 v 4.6.5) I removed all power from the machine for 10-15 minutes. The problem was still there. After giving up in disgust I left the computer alone for a day. This morning I figure I'll check out a DVD I just made using VLC. (afterall it still worked) So I stick the disk into the drive and DVD Player launches and I'm waiting for it to freeze and....@#% #@*& @#* *# % #*&^@! It works just fine! So I stick in the comercial DVD I had been testing with and its all better now. BUT I DON"T KNOW WHY!
    Sorry for the rant.
Thanks for all your kind help.

  • DVD Player rejects clean burned DVD on Mac Pro, G5 and G4

I have a disc from a colleague, standard NTSC which displays the following once the menu screen appears (and hangs afterwards immediately):
"DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from. There was an error reading from disc. It might be scratched or dirty. [-36]"
Has anyone else encountered this with clean media? Thanks.

    HI Ken,
    Repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Finished DVD Momentarily Hangs In Two Places

I have created a 33 minute slide show in Aperture 3. The show is very good quality but it hangs in two places on the burned DVD. Have dragged plist to trash, exported again, burned disk appromimately 7 times, and each time I get the same thing. It hung one time when I burned the movie using iMovie HD6. I assume from this that my problem is iDVD. Any suggestions? Has anybody else experienced these hangs in iDVD

It's good to know that other's are having the same issue. I recently upgraded to the Quad Core iMac with Snow Leopard. Previously I was using a 24"iMac with just Leopard where I was not experiencing the issue.
I have a similar work flow to creating motion DVD's. I create a 25 - 30 minute slideshow with audio tracks in fotomagico then export as Quicktime .MOV file then drag into iDVD to create menu and burn to DVD. When I play this disc back in DVD player connected to TV there is a pause around half way where the entire slideshow including audio stops for about 3 seconds, then another pause towards the end of the slide show. The same disc played back in the iMac plays perfectly.I have tried reducing burn speeds right down to 1x but this did not solve the issue. Oddly the pause location changed depending on which burn speed I used. I also have a Mac Book Pro with Leopard, (not Snow Leopard) which burns the same project file with no issues when played back on the non computer DVD player. This makes me think it is an operating system issue. I have spent quite a few hours on the phone to Apple and reinstalled operating system, tried burning through different users, tried different quicktime export options, all totalling around 20 different burns and viewings to look for rectifications or errors! That's a lot of my valuable time wasted! If you hear of a solution be sure to post it up! In the meantime I am having to burn my work on the laptop which is not so practical but the only solution I can reliably count on.

  • DVD player pauses every few seconds?!

Just upgraded my PowerBook to Leopard. I've heard of a few problems with DVD player, but not this one-- approximately every 8 seconds, the DVD player pauses. Not freezes or hangs, but goes into Pause mode, as if I'd clicked the Pause button. Even happens while fast forwarding or rewinding!
Anyone else seen this, or have any suggestions (other than using VLC?!)

If you've had it less tha 90 days, contact Apple support. If you have Applecare, you can talk with them for up to 3 years, but hopefully that's not needed. In the US call 800-275-2273.

  • Convert iMovie Project to NTSC for Viewing on DVD Player

I have been trying to find some application (relatively cheap) that will convert an iMovie project to NTSC.  I found one on line for $30, but didn't know if anyone had suggestions for a cheaper solution that is realiable.  Thanks
PS - If iMovie can do it, PLEASE let me know how because I have looked and I haven't found anything that will let me burn in DVD player format.

    Hi
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.
    Bengt W wrote
Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result. (so will other way around too)
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.

  • External DVD player refuses to read DVDs

I've searched high and low on the internet and I can't find any solutions to this problem or anyone with this exact same problem. Yesterday I bought a region 2 internal DVD player (LG GH22LP20) as well as a USB enclosure (my Macbook Pro is set to region 1). I thought it would be as simple as plug and play, but it's not.
In both OSX and Windows XP the drive was easily installed and seems to be in working order, but when I put a DVD two things happen: if I try to autoplay it with VLC Media Player, the system will hang until I turn off the DVD player, at which point everything returns immediately back to normal. Secondly, if I try to navigate to the DVD or the VIDEO_TS folder directly through VLC, VLC will flash a black screen (the screen gets big for a fraction of a second and then minimizes again) and nothing else will happen.
I've tried DVDs from different regions, looked for driver updates, scoured messageboards looking for help, and nothing works. Is there some software compatibility issue with the Macbook Pro and the player? Or is either the player or the external housing to blame?

failed when I really needed it at the meeting
    Isn't that just typical!
Maybe a disk error, but equally likely is that the DVD needed a clean.
A single fingerprint is enough to stop it playing.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
