Dvd player has audoi but no image

I played a dvd 10 hours ago, popped it in again tonight and now I am getting only audio. I can blindly navigate to hear any chapter I want, but all I get for video is a black screen. I've had this iMac less than a month! Help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried restarting your iMac?
In the past I've seen the video disappear whilst a screen shot was been taken however under Leopard it seems to prevent a screen shot being taken when DVD Player is open so it's perhaps not that.

  • Since 10.7 DVD Player has sound but no video

MBP with 10.7 is not showing video I get a black screen, although there is sound. DVD in question worked prior to upgrade.

I tried playing it in VLC while doing that I first closed DVD pLayer, then when I was waiting for VLC DVD PLayer opened up full screen and started playing, so I guess it resolved itself.

  • Exported slideshow from Iphoto11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine but show stops 1/2way through because DVD has 2 chapters. How do I eliminate chapters?

I exported slideshow from Iphoto 11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine, but then when playing on DVD player show stops about 12 way and starts over. Seems there are 2 chapters in show. I wan t show to play straight through until end. How do I elimiante chapters or solve problem. Thanks. Bob Low

    Try this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Play the disk image with DVD Player and see if you get the same start over half way thru.
Did you create the slideshow in iPhoto in the slideshow mode?
or were you in an album and then used the Share ➙ iDVD menu option?  What I'm trying to find out is if the slideshow in iDVD is a movie file or an iDVD slideshow with the photos from iPhoto? If it's the latter how many photos in the slideshow?

  • DVD Player has started playing PAL DVD's on external PAL display very badly

I have my Early 2006 iMac connected to an external HDTV (Mini-DVI->HDMI)
Using display options I can switch the external display easily between NTSC and PAL refresh rates.
It used to be that apple's DVD player could play a PAL dvd just fine on the display but now the frame rate drifts in and out of sync as though it no longer understands that the TV is set to 50hz.
Although I used to use DVD player all the time I haven't done so for quite some months so I don't know when this started happening although I have a feeling that it was with a recent OS X update.
I say this because a few months ago all of a sudden the same thing happened with Elgato's EyeTV, but they issued a patch sometime later and it fixed the v-sync issue for their app.
I'm also wondering if it may be a de-interlacing issue rather than a v-sync issue but I'm not sure, I've tried various DVD's.
I have tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer but this hasn't helped.
If it's relevant, my iMac has an ATI Radeon X1600
Any ideas why DVD player has started having trouble with 50hz displays and how I might fix it?
Failing that, is there a good (hopefully free) dvd player alternative which is better at handing external displays of varying display modes?
p.s this was the most appropriate forum I could find.

I suggest that you create 15-second silent audio slug that you can use to move the audio the same amount you have moved the video.

  • What can I do about this message -"Toshiba DVD Player has stopped working"

    Hi
My DVD Player used to work fine . . . and then I installed iTunes.
It then worked for a while, but only by using 'Run as Administrator'.
After a couple of weeks I started to get the message "Toshiba DVD Player has stopped working".
I have uninstalled iTunes - and uninstalled and then re-installed the DVD Player - but it still will not work!!
    Any solutions please?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Ms Q_reeus

My solution to this is to remove Toshiba DVD player and install VLC player. You can get it for free.
It can read all video formats and you don't need some additional codecs.

I [put a dvd in sony player and it says loading on the screen for about 30 seconds and the it says insert disc but the disc won't eject and only about a 1/4 inch of the tray ejects and then quickly retracts!  I've done all the  suggestions on line for unlocking a disc but they don't work.  Help anyone?

  • HT2499 My DVD player has stopped taking discs and the DVD player no longer recognizes the drive.  I bought an external player.  How do I switch the DVD player from the internal drive to the external?

My DVD Player in my MabBook Pro, System 10.8.2, has stopped accepting discs and is no longer recognized by the DVD driver.  I purchased an external Blue-ray Disc player/writer.  It is a Samsung.  I downloaded their driver so the drive shows up on my desktop.  But how do I switch the DVD player over from my internal to my external drive?

In addition to RRFS's advice, please post in the correct forum. This forum is for iMac's, you mentioned you have a MacBook Pro. They're similar but still pretty different hardware.

  • DVD Player has no video?

Verizon set up my configuration incorrectly during installation and I had reconfigured to work properly.  I was working fine for several months and then one day the DVD player stopped working.  I have sound but no video.  The dvd player works fine as I tested it on a TV running DirectTV.  I called Verizon and they told me that they did not change any signals and they do not support any external connections.
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.   I have been without my DVD player for over a month and I miss it!

whether a dvd player works or doesn't work has nothing to do with the fios itself.  it has to do with whether a) its working or b) its connected properly, and c) if you're accessing it properly.
best way to get it fixed is to take a look at it, and how it's hooked up.  I don't suggest plugging it into the verizon box like a chain (wall cable to the verizon stb, to the dvd player to your tv)   but imo it's better to have them seperated from one another.  meaning wall cable to the verizon stb to the tv.
then seperately plug your dvd player directly into the tv.
your tv has the ability to switch between different sources.
a source is what is providing the picture.   your dvd player is a source and your stb is a source.  so to your TV that is two sources.
If it works TODAY on a different tv or different box, then we know that it's a working box, it might just be a simple wiring issue or tv option for us to get you back on track.
Now Verizon does provide wiring diagrams for how it should be plugged into their box.  Use the below diagrams.
If you need help beyond the diagrams below, let us know how it is hooked up today, and we can tell you the best way to have it hooked up.  there are a couple different options to do that.

Your post sounds like you haven't done any troubleshooting such as restarting the computer so let's start there. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches it's possible one or more has become corrupted. You can also try doing a SMC reset and a PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If none of these help and the machine is covered by AppleCare (it's less than 3 months old OR you purchased AppleCare) then call them. If it's under warranty but not covered by AppleCare then make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP and take it in.

  • DVD Player has gone 'walkabout'

I tried to play a DVD on my flat panel imac yesterday and discovered that the entire DVD player software has disappeared. There is no logical explanation for this, and I must presume that the software has been accidentally deleted.
I tried loading the install DVD (OS 10.4) in an attempt to re-install the DVD player software, but was denied permission to load onto my hard drive, seemingly because my operating system now stands at 10.4.7
I would be very grateful for any pointers to enable me to recover the DVD Player software
iMAC FP.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Powerbook 12" with OS 10.4.7

Use Pacifist to extract a new copy of the DVD Player from your Mac OS X 10.4 installation diks, and then run either the 10.47 or 10.48 combo updater.

  • Satellite L750D - Window Media Player has sound but no pictures

I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite L750D, Win 7 Home Permium. I don't know why Win Media player just has sound but no pictures. Please some one help fix this problem. I don't have a recovery dics. Where can I down load it? I would very much appeciate your help. Hien

Your issue is likely, but not necessarily a corrupted or missing codec since you haven't actually confirmed whether your problem is with just one disc or all discs nor if they ever worked on this system before.
Installing VLC is a good idea, but it's a considerate application and won't tamper or try to repair a busted codec and will more often avoids tampering or accidentally repairing any detected whether it's already working or likely broken like yours. That's one of the reasons VLc is so highly recommended such as they way it was repeatedly suggested to you.
A question to ask if your problem is being caused by a few discs, are they custom burned or commercially pressed boutique films since most mainstream DVD's use the same MPEG-2 codec for video and audio and failed video but working audio is usually a clue about a split format disc that has simpler audio streams but obscure video formats that can result in an issue just like yours.
In either case and if none of that is of interest, I can relate and suggest you keep any installed VLc's and download KLite because it is nothing but varying degrees of CODEC's including obscure ones and is fairly aggressive in detecting and seamlessly repairing corrupted codecs while offering more configuration options than most people want and more than many commercial video applications offer.
Visit http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm and choose the "Mega" or 64Bit package but 64bit systems can successfully backport the 32bit set if you feel its necessary to.
You can also potentially skip the KLite process by diagnosing your codecs with Nirsofts InstalledCodec tool, a single file executable no install / no reboot but I don't get the impression you're prepared to really do much at that level and that's fine but it might be needless effort in your case.
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html
But something you definitely need to stop and wonder about is what happened to crush your codec since they don't normally suffer damage until some insidious piece of badware like your favorite iLivid and mine gets into your computer to raise holy hell forever. If that could possibly be what happened to you, the circumstances of how you managed to pick it up and anything else are things you can keep to yourself but consider it a spyware affliction and one I don't make lightly and is something I rarely suggest since it is the overused excuse at the Microsoft forums to blame everything on spyware instead of poorly written OS code.

  • DVD player has two control windows, can't press any buttons.

The internal disk drive on my Late 2009 Mac mini has been non-functional for longer than I've had it. However, I've never really needed it until recently. But when I tried using my new external drive (which runs perfectly and is most certainly not the source of the problem) I encounter one of the strangest glitches I've ever had using Macs!
The DVD player uses the old (brushed metal, 10.6-style) control panel in the bottom-right corner... Until I turn on full-screen. Then the GUI changes to a glazed black appearance (10.7-style) and all of the controls are unresponsive. The features can be triggered by the hotkeys (space bar to play/pause, etc.) but none of the actual buttons can be clicked on. The interface still fades in and out with mouse movement though.
But it starts getting really strange when I exit fullscreen again. Now the brushed metal interface has odd white corners as if the alpha channel is being ignored! https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14403620/brokeninterface.tiff And what's more, though I was unable to reproduce this after a few attempts, once it actually brought the normal control window into fullscreen! There were then two contol interfaces, neither of them could be pressed (though the normal one works outside of fullscreen) and the normal one could still be dragged around the screen yet wouldn't fade away when idle!
Now please note that I am running OS-X 10.7.5 upgraded from 10.6 in the past and the DVD player may not have been original to this computer. I am also using SIMBL and Maximizer and have both Quicktime 7 and Quicktime X installed.
There are thus many things which could be causing the issue, but I have no idea what actually is.
Any insight would be appreciated. I can provide more information if nessesary.

    Stan -
Thanks again for the simple but valuable tip.
I'm just going to repeat the relevant sections from my previous post with the screenshots this time:
Below you'll see a snip of how my current folder structure appears. It's identical to yours, except there are no button files in the General Folder. Since you were kind enough to include a file name, I did a search on that specific one and it's nowhere to be found on my hard drive. Hmmm....
I've seen others remark on how... "challenging".... Adobe's instructions can be sometime. I'll admit to having the same feeling when I was trying to download and install all the content files and the 7-zip stuff. Is the answer somehow that I screwed up that?  Note the 7-zip folder right above the Adobe folder. Here's a screen shot of that expanded folder contents:
Does that look like you think it should? Have I not installed or extracted something correctly?
Finally, the only other thing I can think of to give you as much info as you might need is to include a screenshot of where the "Functional Content" stuff got saved. Adobe's instructions about this (if I recall correctly) were that it did NOT have to be installed anywhere specific, but you then had to go into Encore (& Premiere) and through preferences point to this stuff, which I believe I did. But I don't see any button type files in these anyway.
    Other thoughts or advice?
    Thanks!

  • DVD Player has problem burning -R verbatum lightscribe disc

Has anyone else had this issue? Trying to burn an Imovie HD movie and my new Panosonic DVD player says its uncompatable. Is it the disc or the computers DVD writer?

    Hi
There are more than one thing about this - But as You've done and used DVD+R before - first thought is
    • Dust on the DVD-Burner Laser Lens - I use a DVD-Cleaning disk (with brushes - NO Liquid) now and then
    Other thoughts
    • Cheap DVD Brands - Usually do not work as Memorex, NoName etc.
    - I only use Verbatim
    • DVD type - DVD+R is a more modern format and older DVD-players can not playback these
    - I only use DVD-R (Never ever DVD+/-RW)
    • Burn speed matters - full speed and many BURN ERRORS
    - I always set this down to x2 or x4 - Plays on many more DVD-players
    • Save as a DiskImage
    - I always do - to see that all works as I like it before burning - then I use Disk Util tool or Toast™ to Burn
( This has ONE Major Advantage ! it splitts the DVD process into two parts and if anything goes wrong one can pin the problem to one of the parts )
    • Free Space on Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk
    - for SL-DVDs I secure a minimum of 25GB free space - for DL-DVDs 50GB and if HD-Material is used about 4 - 5 times more to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK during Process.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Apple 10.7.4 DVD player has dropped clip-maker feature?

Recently my school installed MAC OS 10.7.4. Now when I go to the DVD player for classroom use, the player's clip-maker feature is gone. Apple Help gives no answer. Am I right that thisfeature has disappeared? Thank you. Don

Well, not "solved," but I was mis-remembering part of the problem: 10.4 did not correct the inability of DVD Player to recognize external drives -- I forgot that there was a software patch (a terminal script, I think) which allowed them to be recognized. Sorry for the trouble.
