DVD Player in OS X Maverick
We are running Maverick on MacBook Pro 2011 recently updated to Maverick. We have tested a DVD and it does run, but it hangs when you try to move the handle to a certain time in the movie. The movie works great in an iMAC with an older version of OS and DVD Player.
The DVD player that seems to be hanging is ver 5500.48.2 build 5.5f80 (1). I did run Disk permission repair and repair on disk as well.
What do I need to do to make this work?
Did a clean Lion install on my Late 2009 MacBook and have also been experiencing consistent issues with DVD Player. Upon launching (or attempting to), the application name appears along the top menu bar and icon appears in dock, but nothing else appears (player window or controls). Secondary click on the dock shows "Force Quit" automatically. This can happen whether I open DVD Player from Launchpad, dock, or Finder.
Seems to take about 3 or 4 attempts, then suddenly, it works.
EDIT ...
Should note that this consistently happens when I immediately try launching DVD Player after waking MacBook (about the first 30 seconds to 1 minute). I've also found that my Wi-Fi connection doesn't work during this time. Snow Leopard did not behave this way on same machine.

DVD Player keeps crashing in OSX Maverick. Any solutions?
Deleting the user com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file does fix it. Problem presents itself for us because our iMac's are connected to a projector in the classroom. Disconnect the mini-display connector and the problem also goes away when the DVD player is launched. Dump the user plist for DVDPlayer and good to to. Not a 3rd party software issue for us.

I installed Mavericks yesterday and then tried to watch a movie. That is when I noticed the icon for the dvd player is no longer in the launchpad. If I put the disk in the drive it opens on it own or if I search for DVD player it will come up under a spotlight or finder. How do I get the icon back on my launchpad? I don't want to have to search/insert a movie everytine I want to watch one. I would lik to be able to just click the icon to open the player. Thanks.
cfkola,
Welcome to the HP Forum.
I believe you must be referring to the Solution Center Printer software and not your Control Panel.
Your Solution Center shortcut may just be missing -- or there may be a deeper issue with your printer software.
The easier option might be to reinstall the Full Feature Software for your printer and see if that solves all the troubles at one time.
In most cases, for most printers, the Solution Center has been replaced with the Printer Assistant shortcut. This is just a new program that does about the same things as the Solution Center. Some people like it better. The interface looks a bit different -- many of the features are the same; for example, your scanning and ink check features will be available.
The instructions to (re)install the printer software are provided in this Dragon document:

DVD player not working with superdrive on Mavericks
Hi, I have installed Mavericks on my MacBook Pro. I have two SSD HDD and no internal optical drive. I am using the Superdrive externally through USB. It worked fine under Mountain Lion. Right after installing Mavericks when inserting a DVD DVD Player came up with the message "Initializing error on drive". Hope anybody has found the solution. Ca't find any answers anywhere.
Hooray I got it working!!
Vishva's advice was correct but incomplete, the important part that was missing is that you need to replace ALL occurences of the word 'internal' with 'external' when you hexedit the file he recommended, I found the following web link with the full instructions.
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20070591-263.html
Incidentally, when I tried to edit the file directly I was given an error saying it was read only and wouldn't allow me to edit it, so what I did was save the file to a new name, make all the edits and then copy the new file into the correct directory, then using terminal issue the following commands
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A
then once you are in the directory containing the old and new framework file you need to copy the old file to a backup name for safe keeping, so issue the following command:
sudo cp DVDPlayback DVDPlayback-backup
Then rename the new file you created (replace {yourfile} with the name you stored it as!) to the live one using:
sudo cp {yourfile} DVDPlayback
If you list the files in this directory using the following command you should see all the files and their ownership and permissions:
ls -alh
all files should be owned by 'root', if the newly created file is owned by your username, in my case it was, then you can change its ownership by typing the following:
sudo chown root DVDPlayback
I then exited terminal, rebooted just to be on the safe side, and hey presto the DVD drive now works perfectly, shame apple didn't put something in place in mavericks to check for this, maybe they will in future updates...
Hope this helps anyone having the same issues, and thanks Vishva for pointing me in the right direction! -
Has anyone used an app with the new Maverick software to burn iphoto slide shows to DVDs that will play on a standard DVD player? This probably cannot be a demo app in that the amout of photos on the slideshows is large.
Thank you,
JimExport the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
Other options:
Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn
Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium
But there are lots of others too. Search on the App Store or MacUpdate -
DVD Player Crashes since updating to Maverick.
Since updating to Mavericks my DVD Player no longer works. As soon as I open DVD Player it crashes. Is there an easy fix or is the DVD Player going the way of iDVD? I need it for my multimedia classes so students can burn DVDs and play them for class as well as have something to take home to share with Mommy and Daddy.
Try deleting the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist.Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I have to use it again after every update. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible. -
DVD Player destroying my system after Mavericks "upgrade"
I watched a movie rented from RedBox last night, using my iMac's DVD Player app. When the movie was over, my computer automatically ejected the movie and I shut it down. This morning, all **** has broken loose. It's taken more than an hour to get it operational. DVD Player was still in my dock, open and running. Safari and Mail were still running, according to the dock, but were inoperable. I could not force quit anything. Everything was frozen or the desktop didn't load completely at all. I shut the whole **** thing on and off many times -- proper shutdown when allowed but turned off via the power button on the back of the computer and by turning off the electricity to the machine. FINALLY, I was able to make the computer work well enough to force quit Safari, Mail, and DVD Player (in that order). What has happened here? What a nightmare Mavericks has made of my beloved computer.
Is anybody else having so many problems with Mavericks? And / or with DVD Player?
Thank you!I have read a couple of complaints like that, but not sure it's widespread.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
If that does NOT help, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that does NOT help then I suspect the optical drive or media itself, or possibly just needs a cleaning CD run on it. -
Problems with mavericks dvd player
Has anyone noticed that dvd scripting is poorly implemented in Mavericks?
I have a dvd with a nested script to randomly select from among 48 tracks on a dvd.
Since that exceeds script length limitations, I had to break the script down into 3 parts:
1. A master script which decides whether to choose script 1 (items 1-24) or Script 2 (items 25-48)
2. Script 1 which chooses from among tracks 1-24
3. Script 2 which chooses from among tracks 25-48.
Each track has the jump to set to the master script.
This used to run fine under 10.8.6 and it runs find on a normal dvd player.
Problem is: it doesn't run under Mavericks. The Mavericks dvd player simply ignores the master script after the first iteration and once it selects script one or script 2 it only will play back tracks from whichever script it selected the first time.
This is a huge defect.
I've tried adding a line to my code at the beginning of each script to reset the variable controlled by the master script to 0 (I use 1 or 2 to decide which script to choose). It seems to be ignoring the jump command of the tracks to return to the master script and will only return to the script which controls its playback.
Any hope Apple that you will fix this?
KeithToo bad I have to reply to myself in order to correct something:
It seems the compiled DVD doesn't run under 10.8.6 either, but it runs FINE on a real dvd, runs fine in simulate mode in DVD Studio Pro. But for some reason even though DVDs are restricted to 124 lines of code, DVD studio Pro refuses to compile my script when I make it a mere 50 lines long. Anyone have a solution for that? I really need this to run from a harddrive so I can automate the playback. I'm trying anything I can to rewrite the script to conform to the limitations of the Apple DVD player though those are not stated clearly anywhere I can find. Does anyone know those limitations? -
DVD Player in Mavericks ...
... is giving me The Blues.
Intention: Duplicate a dvd of home movies to a folder to burn multiple dvds for family.
Result: Burned dvd plays on BluRay and regular Sony player but NOT in MacBook Pro's DVD Player or my Quicksilver PPC G4.
Analysis: This is the reverse of a common problem: Burned dvds play in Apple's DVD Player but not others.
Device: MacBook Pro running Mavericks ( recently updated ).
Past Results: On my Quicksilver PPC G4 I never had issues duping dvds and could play multiple devices doing it the same way.
Possible Culprit: Is this a Region 1 issue? That's how DVD Player is set. Or ... is it Apples copy protection software running wild?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.Might be the reverse of other reports here, but it's likely still the same problem. Optical media is flaky. (Optical media can even "rot", but that's fodder for another discussion.)
As for this issue, optical drives tend to get dusty or fail and can be generally quite flaky, which is one of the reasons Apple has removed them. Try an optical disk cleaning disk, and see if that clears up the issue. Try re-recording with different type of or different batch of or a different vendor of optical media blanks in the same drive, try the same media in a different drive connected on the Mac, and (less likely to be the trigger) try different burning software, too.
Make sure the media itself is compatible with the optical drive. Older optical readers supported rather fewer formats, and some didn't and don't work with most recorded media. Some of the drives I still work with are old enough that they will only read pressed CDs — those older drives just can't resolve the data given the much lower reflectivity that's provided by recordable and rewritable media.
For the supported formats, see the > About This Mac and drill down into the system configuration information to locate the supported media recording and playback formats for your particular optical drive.
Region protections are a device firmware setting, and not of the host software. Your data should only be region-encoded if the burner software region-encoded the disk. -
Will my dvd player work if i re install mavericks?
Hello. Can anyone tell me how to partition my macbook pro and re-install mavericks?
I have a Western Digital external hard drive which has been set up to perform automatic time machine back ups on connection. This has been happening since before i upgraded to Yosemite.
I would like to partition my macbook pro and re install the Mavericks OS on one half if thats possible?(to extract it from one of my backups)? whilst keeping the Yosemite OS in action...?
I want to do this as my mac has stopped playing dvd's suspiciously soon after upgrading to Yosemite, so i would like to see if works again with mav's...
The dvd's are all legit, the superdrive is clean and has nothing stuck in it.. I've tried a few other things suggested online but they didn't do anything and i don't see an external dvd drive running through vlc as a solution..
I've also seen online that this has happened to a LOT of people. One report was of advice from apple that their super drive was broken only to get it back with the message that it was a software problem after all.
Another report was that after re installing Mav's it worked fine.
So i haven't seen any fixes anywhere and apple don't comment. I'd really like the dvd player to work again on this 1.5 yr old £1200 machine
Thanks in advance if any one can help,, i also warn that on a scale of 1-10, 1 being cave man 10 being Steve Jobs, i'm a high 2 or a low 3.
What ever info is needed about my computer just tell me what and where to find it and i will post a screen shot
maybe this will be helpful to others with the same problem ... ThanksTry resetting your PRAM/NVRAM?

What specifically is the issue? It won't play DVD movies through the DVD player? Or it spits out the disc when you attempt to read the disc?
If it just won't play movies, that could simply be a glitch with the DVD Player app... if it spits out the disc, that's a different thing entirely. If it's a DVD Player issue, download VLC and then try playing a DVD using VLC. If that works, it's the DVD Player app. It may need to be reinstalled.

My dvd player is no longer working and my mac will not accept my installer disc
my iphoto is no longer working either, as well as my dvd player, so i decided to reinstall, using my installer disc, but my computer turns it around a few times, then spits it out! what can i do?
I updated recently to os x maveric, that is when my iphoto stopped working, yet i have previous photo;s in the iphoto gallery, the dvd stopped working a while ago for no reason.
Any ideas? It's not possible to restore the operating sysem from your install disc on a Mac running v10.9 Mavericks.
The only way to restore OS X is to startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery
Try iPhoto and the DVD Player app after you restore OS X. -
I update to os x 10.9.3 and now my dvd player app says it's not supported
I updated to os x 10.9.3 mavericks and now my dvd player app says it can't be used with os x 10.9.3(and the dvd player is 5.4,and can't find update in app store)
What to do?sorry i didn't think to look because i had it on the desktop, but your right.
Thank's for the help,i really appriciate it. -
My DVD player now quits whenever I attach a projector using Displayport to VGA
hHe player works fine if I disconnect the Displayport from the projector cable-- I can watch the DVD on my computer screen. But can't use a projector. MacBook Pro with Maverick. Is this an OS bug? Is there a fix? I need to be able to project my DVD's!
Hi--thanks for the suggestion to change users. When I did that the same problem happened--the DVD Player quit as soon as I attached the Displayport to the VGA connector for the Projector.
This seems to be clearly an OS problem--or at least a bug in the DVD Player.
When I use the VLC Player instead, I am able to play my DVD's without a problem thru the same projector using the Displayport VGA adapter.
Does Apple know about this bug?--it is not insignificant. I am a teacher and using the computer to play DVD's for my students using an overhead projector is part of the job. This should be a no-brainer for a Mac.
I had no problems with the DVD Player before I did the Maverick Update--it had worked fine. So this seems to be a Maverick problem, and needs to be fixed. Does anyone know if Apple is working on this....?
