I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • DVD Player randomly quits when using closed captioning

I have been experiencing this issue on two different 10.4.11 machines, both intel. A MBPro and a Mini.
The DVD Player normally works fine, disc after disc, unless I turn on closed captions (not subtitles, but similar), then the DVD Player will quit randomly every 1-3 discs. I have done all the permission fixes and usual cache deletions, but nothing seems to work. I have also deleted preferences and plists on both machines.
The crash log is usually cryptic, and all I can discern is that thread "one" crashed.
Can anyone else reproduce this issue, or have other suggestions?

    Hi,
Try a different font... here's how: Customizing the look of closed captioning text
You can change the font and color of closed captioning text. You can also change the color and transparency of the closed captioning box for optimal viewing when the captions are displayed over the video.
Choose DVD Player > Preferences, and then click Windows.
In the Closed Captioned section, click the Text color button and select a color to use for text.
Click the Background color button and select a contrasting background color.
Drag the transparency slider to the right (lighter) or to the left (darker).
Choose a font from the Font pop-up menu.
You can customize the font size as well, but the size setting only applies to closed captioning in a separate window.

  • DVD Player just displays static

Well, it's kind of hard to explain, but here is a screenshot of what DVD Player can look like when I try to play a movie: http://showmac.com/dvdstatic.jpg
It seems to display random bits and parts from other on-screen gui elements. Like windows and menu bars. Sometimes it's just garbage, like in the screenshot. Other times one can clearly see iChat buddylists and such, sticking by in the DVD window.
Once the "static" is in place, the "timer" will keep progressing, as if it was playing the movie. No picture though. And no sound, or fragments of sound with quite a few seconds delay.
On top of all this, DVD Player seems to hog 110% of the CPU while doing this "nothing". Trying to stop the playback can take quite a few seconds. And attepting to open a tiny app like Preview.app would take 5 minutes (no kidding).
Weirdest thing is: VLC plays all movies fine. And the issues stay when playing DVD disk images or video_ts folders. So it can't be a faulty drive?
I have tried deleting the DVD Player prefs file, and the Application Support folder. Plus running the cron tasks. Any other suggestions? Running 10.4.3.

I've 1.25 GB RAM and right now about 1 GB free disk space (on boot drive). I've had about 8 GB free at the most, still with problems.
I disabled the following 3rd-party widgets: Hula Girl (http://www.johnwilliams713.com/hula/), Flidget (http://zooibaai.nl/archives/2005/05/01/of-design-mac-and-flickr) and Widget Television VF2 (I see VF3 is out now) (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19539)
I then inserted the Madagascar DVD I got today. And it actually plays! No idea if it was releated to the fact I disabled the mentioned widgets. I'm also running the PB hooked up to a TV now, over the usual Dell display.
When I get back home to my collection I will investigate further. I wouldn't hold my breath, but it sure would be nice if the problem was solved.

  • DVD Player Just stopped Playing DVDs

Just today, the DVD player has stopped playing DVDs on my ibook. I tried putting in a multitude of diferent DVDs, but I always got the same result: the disc image would not appear in the desktop, and the DVD player would open, as if it were in standby, but it would not play. Any idea as to what may have happened/how I could remedy this?

    Hello,
Follow these steps and you should be on your way to watching your DVD's:
    1) First, Quit DVD Player if open.
    2) Eject your DVD.
    2) Go to: Home > Library > Preferences.
    3) Find the file called: com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist and move it to the trash.
    4) Insert your DVD.
    5) If necessary, launch DVD Player.
    I hope this works!
    -Jason
(If these steps do not work, reply back and I will try something else)

  • My DVD player now quits whenever I attach a projector using Displayport to VGA

hHe player works fine if I disconnect the Displayport from the projector cable-- I can watch the DVD on my computer screen. But can't use a projector.  MacBook Pro with Maverick. Is this an OS bug?  Is there a fix?  I need to be able to project my DVD's!

Hi--thanks for the suggestion to change users.  When I did that the same problem happened--the DVD Player quit as soon as I attached the Displayport to the VGA connector for the Projector.
This seems to be clearly an OS problem--or at least a bug in the DVD Player.
When I use the VLC Player instead, I am able to play my DVD's without a problem thru the same projector using the Displayport VGA adapter.
Does Apple know about this bug?--it is not insignificant.  I am a teacher and using the computer to play DVD's for my students using an overhead projector is part of the job.  This should be a no-brainer for a Mac.
I had no problems with the DVD Player before I did the Maverick Update--it had worked fine.  So this seems to be a Maverick problem, and needs to be fixed.  Does anyone know if Apple is working on this....?

  • How do you get dvds to work on regular dvd players?  It works on PC dvd player just fine.

I created a movie via Elements 13 (Using Windows 7) using video from my camcorder.  I added menus and such and then burned it to a DVD -R using Elements 13.  The dvd will play on a computer via the dvd player but it won't play
on a regular dvd player that is hooked to my TV.  What am I missing?

    gibbyutah
What did you create in Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 7 (assumed 64 bit) - DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or AVCHD format on DVD disc.
Although you can use a regular DVD burner to create the AVCHD format on DVD disc, it will not play back on a regular DVD player. You need
a Blu-ray player or one of those multi media players whose specifications include support for AVCHD format on DVD disc.
So, first order of things is for you to confirm which type of product you produced using Premiere Elements 13.
Also, be aware that stop markers in Premiere Elements (any version) burn to AVCHD on DVD or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc do not
function at playback. Those stop markers work only for DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc.
Please let us know if any of the above targeted your issue. If not, more details please, and we will think about this some more.
Also, please review the specification of your TV's DVD player to verify its specifications as to type of disc supported as well as the format on
    that particular disc.
    Thank you.

  • DVD Player unexpectedly quits on launch

Can someone help me get the Apple DVD Player back up and running? I'm not even sure why the player is not working. Maybe because of one of the latest updates? I'm running 10.4.6, DVD Player 4.6.5 with all of the latest updates.
    Thanks!!

One thing to try is to delete the preference file: /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist .

  • Flash player just quits working fix

Recent malware infection causes flash player to fail?  The kill-bit problem noted in this posthttp://forums.adobe.com/message/3432049#3432049  fixed it for me.
    Just thought I'd share.

    Note :
This issue has been solved by completely uninstalling the CA Security Suite (previousl known as VET) from this i7 64 bit system and by an Adobe Technician completly uninstalling the latest version 11 and reinstalling 10, although it did not work just by doing that.

  • Dvd player wouldn't play dvd

Once I insert a DVD - a regular movie dvd from store or rental store - DVD would mount on desktop, but DVD player just quits. Tried to open dvds with VLC but wouldn't work either. Does it has to do with how they make DVDs?

I thought the drive was failing due to the age of the machine.
I installed a new Blue ray dvd burner and got this message.
I inserted a standard dvd and it will recognize the title of the dvd under the new dvd icon on my desktop, but the app still quits with the same message.
So, whether it is the old drive or the new one, I still get the same results.

So I have narrowed this problem down to the fact that it has to be my new ATI 5770 graphics card.
While the card has multiple outputs, when I connect my two new 27 inch displays, only one will go to 1920X1080. The other display does not have the option of going to 1920X1080, but will do other formats that are truly grim.
Anyway, apparently there many other people that have had the exact same issue with this card nocking out the DVD player and not running a second 27 inch monitor.
Is there an easier way to solve this problem than toying with the code?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Clock freezes after using Apple DVD Player

I am having a small and annoying issue with the Apple DVD Player (v 4.6.5). This just started happening recently. Everytime I run a DVD (or video TS file, etc) on the software player-it performs as usual. After quitting the application and choosing to eject the disc, I notice there is a longer lag from when I first used the computer, then the little colored wheel of death spins, and eventually Apple DVD Player closes.
The problem, however, is after the application is closed out, my time freezes in the status bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen. (As I write this it says 1:16 and the time in the apple "date and time" preferences panel of OSX says it's 2:14-which is the real time) If I drag the cursor up to the time status bar in the upper right hand corner, it turns into the spinning color wheel, and back again once dragged out.
Once the computer restarts, the time in the upper right goes back to normal with no spinning wheel (until I open Apple DVD Player and quit out of it again). I know this is not an earth-shattering issue, but it is fairly annoying and abnormal. If anyone has suggestions, please help.

It sounds like you found your answer but I also wanted to mention that this is a known BUG when using DVD Player and the Digital Optical Out of a G5. If you look at activity monitor when the Clock is dead and you get the Beach Ball the SystemUIServer will be listed as not responding. If you Force quit this process everything should start working again. As long as the LoginWindow Process is running the SystemUIServer will restart when needed after the force quit.
HOWEVER, The other part of this bug with Digital Optical Out is that sometimes the LoginWindow Process will also stop responding. In this case a Log-Out is the only way to correct the problem. The third part of this bug is sometimes the Finder also stops responding but a Relaunch will fix that.
As I said it sounds like you found your problem but I wanted to post this incase others out there using the Digital Optical Out read this and don't correct their problem.
Also, If you were using the "DOO" by deleting the .plist will set the DVD player back to SYSTEM falsely making one think the problem is fixed.
Last I know this is a known bug because I submitted it as a bug to Apple and received an e-mail stating they know of this problem already.

  • DVD Player shuts down

Every time I try to play a DVD in my Mac, the player comes on then just closes. The error that comes up just says it "unexpectedly quit, Nothing else was affected". WRONG! I'M affected! I'm goin' nuts!!

    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

You could also get a new copy of DVD player, just in case yours was corrupted.. for Tiger, this is the one to get.. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/dvdplayer46.html
This is the one for Jaguar (10.2) if that is what you are using.. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/dvdplayer.html
Download these ones and replace yours from the application folder.. . that means, trash the old one and put the new one in your folder... Good luck!

  • DVD Player freezing my computer

I have one DVD that will not play in DVD Player. It starts playing and then freezes on the legal notice. And it doesn't just freeze the application, it freezes the whole computer, and my computer screen starts flashing to black for split seconds at regular intervals. All I can do is a hard shut down with the power button. There's nothing out of the ordinary with the disc that I can tell. It's brand new without any scratches. DVD Player plays other DVDs just fine.
    Things I've tried:
Playing the DVD using VLC: No problem at all. Plays just fine.
Playing the DVD in DVD Player in a different user account: Still freezes the computer.
Playing the DVD on my family's PowerPC iMac G5: Plays in DVD Player without a hitch.
Playing the DVD on my brother's Intel MacBook Pro exactly like mine: Plays in DVD Player just fine.
Deleting DVD Player and CDInfo preferences & restarting: Still freezes my computer in DVD Player.
Now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong?
    Thanks!

One more thing I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling DVD Player and repairing permissions. It didn't work. The DVD is still freezing my computer in DVD Player. Any ideas anyone?
