DVD Player not playing

I have a new Macbook Pro 17" and am having problems.
I put in a normal dvd that works on all my other dvd players in the house, and it didn't play. DVD Player pops up, but when I push play, it gives the error "Supported Disc Not Available".
However, I added VLC and it was able to find it in /dev/rdisk1 w/o a problem.
I can also see /Volumes/DVDVIDEO/VIDEOTS from the command line.
All my software is up to date according to the update feature in OS X. (4.6.5 app/4.6.8 framework)
Any ideas?

hi there--
i would try to reset the pmu http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319. could make a difference. also make sure that your preferences are set to view disks from your geographic region. this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50156 explains how regions differ slightly in the play speed of the disk, allowing you not to view it if settings are wrong. I can't seem to get my DVD player to play any of my movies. When I insert the dvd it doesn't show up on my desktop. The DVD Player doesn't start up until I start it(I have the option to 'open DVD Player) when I insert a DVD). I've tried several DVDs, all real dvd's, not burned or copied. I keep getting "Supported Disc Not Available". I haven't changed the region... I'm not even sure how to do that. I can still read and play music cd's. I've also tried using Front Row and I get "The DVd cannot be played... the format was not recognized".... well, They are the same DVDs I've watched befor so I'm wondering why... any thoughts befor I call up apple and get rejected since my warranty is shot.
    Thanks....

You might try to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and/or PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?

  • DVD Player not playing video DVDs

This is a new problem on my MacBook Pro. The DVD player has played videos in the recent past with no problem. Now, when I insert a DVD, the computer attempts to read the disk (at least it sounds that way) and then ejects it. I have repaired permissions and researched on the discussion forums, even downloaded VLC to no avail. The CD player is working fine and all non-video DVDs are being read.

are these legit dvd's from the store or burnt DVD's? also try running a lens cleaner thru the system

  • DVD Player not playing discs

My DVD player won't play rental dvd's etc .. I get a message saying "Supported Disk Not Available"
I have successfully played on 2 dvd's on this machine (it's only 2 weeks old) and each of those times i got a message asking my permission to change the region settings plus a warning that i would only be able to change the settings 5 times ... this third attempt at watching a movie (a big reason i bought the 2nd machine - to watch dvd's in my bedroom) it now gives me the 'not supported' message

After some research I tried a suggestion from another forum to repair disk permissions - so far so good (at least the dvd i was trying to watch played no problem)

  • DVD Player Not Playing Specific DVD

I was watching my 10th season of the simpsons yesterday, and suddenly an "unknown error" popped up. And now whenever I try to watch the DVD, nothing happens. It shows upin the finder and even DVD player pops up, but nothing plays.
I can't remember the error (errors, actually. There were two of them) numbers, but the first one had a 7 in it, and the 2nd had a 6 in it.
What do I do to watch my DVD?
    Hope you can help.

  • DVD Player not playing at correct speed

I have the 2011 iMac. I have Apple Care, etc, still in full warranty. Other than this, it is perfectly functional. When I play a DVD it does not play at normal speed. It isn't 2X speed either, I have checked everything, the problem is that it plays at around 1.25 - 1.5 speed. It's not REALLY noticeable, but it does become a little hard to listen to after a while, since the sound obviously gets distorted. I have checked with multiple DVDs, the one it's mainly noticeable on is Oblivion, came out barely two days ago.
    Thankyou for your help

Bring it in for service.  Ask them to check for an updated firmware for the drive.

  • DVD Player Not Playing DVD's

When my brother puts a DVD into his Macbook Pro, it will read it, but after a few seconds it will freeze. He can't do anything. Even with brand new DVD's. The spinning rainbow icon comes up, and he has to restart his computer for the problem to go away.
Any ideas on what is causing this problems and what to do to fix it?

Hi. I have the same issue with a MBP. I cannot find the referred file in the specified path. I checked my MacBook air, and also could not find the file.

  • DVD is not playing in my DVD player!

I made a movie in iMovie HD, created a DVD in iDVD, burned it successfully, and now that I try to play it on my DVD player, it is choppy and basically freezes and says "disk error". I can see the title pages and everything looks good, so I'm not sure what's going on. I took it to work and it only played on an old DVD player in someone's office, but not on my computer DVD player, not in other, newer DVD players. I burned the movie on a Maxell DVD-R, which I thought was a good brand. Do you think it has to do with burning speed? As I'm not sure what speed I set the burn for. It does play, however, on the apple DVD Player on my mac, so I know it works at least somewhere! The problem is that I gave this DVD to the bride (I edited her wedding) and she was unable to play it at her home. Any ideas????

    Hi
I burn my DVDs at an as slow speed possibly. This can be set in iDVD08 or by creating
a DiskImage and use Disk Util tool or Roxio Toast™ to burn where speed can be
    set down to x1
Speed is set by the no. on the DVD bought eg x16 and max speed on DVD-burner eg x8
in previous versions of iDVD. So forcing iDVD up to version 6, one has to buy x2 DVDs.
No other way possibly else using another program to do the actual burning.
    I only use Verbatim DVDs
    Only DVD-R (Single Layer)
Read this on iDVD quality = Result
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

I have a DVD and I would like to just play a chapter, and discuss it, without the next chapter automatically starting. Usually DVD players have the "Play all" you can turn off and on...but I don't see it with the Mac player.

  • Burned DVD issues in DVD player not reading or music issues stop and start

I'm a PC converted to a MAC (less than a month) and love it so far. I have been able to create and burn a DVD. The problem I'm having is one DVD player will not read the DVD (Hitachi). The other DVD player will play it, but the music stops and starts when it transitions (twirl) to another picture (Panasonic DVD/VHS combo). I'm using a DVD R Memorex. Neither one of the player are new. Would love to use this to make the Grandparent's a DVD of the grandchildren from birth to present as Christmas present. What do I need to use or do to be able to watch on any DVD player as well as the computers?
    Message was edited by: me01

    Hi me01
Welcome to apple discussions. Try using 99 photos / less to avoid issues with audio fades / drops. Also do a search for Memorex on this forum and you'll see it's not the first choice of dvd's for most users. Instead try Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden and burn at 4x from a disc image for best results. Wish you luck and feel free to post back with results or any further questions.

  • DVD Player Not Working - Need Help Please!

My eMac is currently not reading DVDs. The drive will recognize and automatically play commercial music CDs and software, as well as burned music CDs. However, when a commercial DVD is inserted into a drive, not only will the DVD player not recognize or play it, the eMac does not even notice that there is a DVD in the disk drive.
Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    hi there--
there are a number of things for you to try. one is to do a pmu reset. instructions are found in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 if you have an ati graphics emac or later, then the pmu button is on the right side, not the left. if that doesn't work, then try resetting the firmware. boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f and then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command will restart the computer. if neither of those things works, then i would try booting to the install disk and running disk utility. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if that fails, then i would create a test user (system preferences > accounts, then hit the plus sign) and see if there is any difference there. let me know how that is going for you. • What can I do, if a DVD will not play?

What can I do, if a DVD will not play?

You don't want to change the player Region Code. If I remember correctly you can only change the Region Code three times and it sticks to the last Region Code you selected.
Does the DVD play in another player?

  • DVD will not play on standalone.

Ok so here's the deal. I imported my DVD using MpegStreamClip - this is a DVD previously built by me, but back in the days I used Pinnacle... which wasn't so long ago. I imported this DVD as .m2v and AIFF audio, and built a project in DVDSP 4. The simulations run fine and I have had no problems up until the point that I burn the DVD, and the DVD will not play on a standalone player.
When outputting from DVDSP, do I need to Burn/Build/Format/Build&Format? Is it one of my settings that I need to change?
I know this question has been asked before, but there seems to be no solution out there yet.

I have an HVDVD_TS folder, but not the usual VIDEO_TS folder - could this be evidence of my problem?
    It's the smoking gun.
    Keep your m2v files.
Take the aiff files and encode them in Compressor ac3/Dolby 2.
Create a new project in DVD SP. Make certain the SD button is selected.
Import ac3 and m2v assets and you are good to go.

  • My burned dvd does not play in dvd players

I created an iMovie and it is about 73 minutes long. I had no problems sharing it with iDVD, choosing a theme, and getting it to burn to a disc (it did take quite awhile, but it eventually got there!).
After iDVD finished burning my project, I went to test it out on the family DVD player. It plays correctly until about 20 minutes into the movie and then the picture starts to get all pixel-y and skip. The disc isn't dirty or scratched. I then put the disc in my old Powerbook to see if it would play, and it does.
So, my question is: Why will my DVD only play on computers and not in an actual DVD player? Does this seem fixable, or am I stuck watching my movie on a computer screen?

    Hi Rochelle:
    Welcome to discussions.
You would probably do better saving the project as a disk image. (Read this from Len Goff):
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
