DVD Player Problems

My DVD player seems to skip on brand new DVD's. It freezes for a few seconds, then move forward for a second, then freezes again. Also, sometimes I get "Error -96682", but sometimes I don't. It also has the tendency to "skip damaged areas", even on new DVD's.

After innstalling Snow Leopard, DVD player does not work with any of my DVDs and the symptoms you describe about the drive spinning and jumping is excactly what seems to be going on. I first noticed it a little time after innstalling Snow Leopard and I am wondering if these problems started for me after I innstalled the 10.6.1 update. It seems we have the same machine from 2206, so maybe there is a problem with Snow Leopards driver routines for the combo drive in the 2006 MacBooks?
VLC does not work either, but the DVDs play fine on VLC on Windows XP at work. I don't have a TV, so all my DVDs are useless now...

  • Leopard DVD player problems

every time I launch the DVD player program it crashes instantly i've tried to restart cause I thought it might need a restart but it still does even after the restart.

I too am having DVD Player problems, though certainly not that consistently. About 1 in 10 times I start up DVD Player it will immediately dim the screen and display in front the multilingual "you must restart your computer" message. Never happened with Tiger, but that was also a different computer. Doesn't matter whether I'm playing a VIDEO_TS folder or whether I'm playing a disc, doesn't matter whether there is even a disc in the player or not. For VIDEO_TS folder doesn't seem to matter if the folder is local or on a network. Also, I have had the same effect when viewing VIDEO_TS movies through Front Row; thus I think the problem may be pretty deep in the OS's video code, perhaps even in the driver. My system has Santa Rosa motherboard with x3100 built-in graphics.

  • DVD Player problem after 10.4.7 upgrade

I don't know if I posted this to the right forum so I'll repost it here. Sorry for the repeat. Compared to others on this forum my problem seems trivial but it is still somewhat annoying. After installing 10.4.7 upgrade combo I can no longer use Apple's DVD player app. The app launches and recognizes DVDs but cannot make it through the title before it hangs. It responds to eject and quit. It informs me that skipping to the next chapter is not permitted and it does not crash. I have tried: dumping the prefs, fixing permissions, and re-running the updater. On the same machine if I reboot onto the other drive with 10.3.9 the DVD player (V 4.0 vs V 4.6.5) works as advertised. Any ideas?
    TIA
    Dave

I HATE FM! OK so I found the problem. I posted and got some ideas. I downloadsd Pacifist and re-installed DVD Player. (one version back 4.5 v 4.6.5) I removed all power from the machine for 10-15 minutes. The problem was still there. After giving up in disgust I left the computer alone for a day. This morning I figure I'll check out a DVD I just made using VLC. (afterall it still worked) So I stick the disk into the drive and DVD Player launches and I'm waiting for it to freeze and....@#% #@*& @#* *# % #*&^@! It works just fine! So I stick in the comercial DVD I had been testing with and its all better now. BUT I DON"T KNOW WHY!
    Sorry for the rant.
Thanks for all your kind help.

  • DVD Player problem - "supported disk not available" ?

    Hi all,
Running DVD Player 4.6.5 on Tiger. Up until a while, everything was fine. Now, it won't play any DVD. It starts when I insert a DVD, but does not start playing automatically (which is what the setting currently is). When I start playing manually, all I get is the message "Supported Disk Not Available" with a stop sign beside it.
    Any suggestions/ideas/things to look into?
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Mine does this on occasion.
Haven't figured out what the problem is but restarting fixes it.
Can't get it to repeat the problem enough to troubleshoot it.
I posted a year ago but no responses.

  • 10.4.3 Update OK Except DVD PLayer Problem?

Hi Folks. I did the 10.4.3 update last week successfully on my iBook G4. I ran many app tests and so far, everything has performed fine. Actually, I am noticing a performance boost. The only problem I am having is with DVD Player 4.6.1, the latest version. It plays commercial DVD movies OK, but everytime a selection is made on the menu like changing a screen view, the beachball just spins. It is like the app has a mind of its own and in control by itself. It seems the 10.4.3 update is not compatible with it. Has anyone else had this trouble? I dumped the DVD plist pref file, but that didn't improve anything. Can someone advise a cure or workaround. I've got movies to run. Does Apple know about this glitch? steveB5

    Shawn,
I had the same problem just a few days ago. I went to the Genius bar and we were able to repair my directories from the single user login. I had to install X.4.0 and then upgrade again. Lost alot of settings but it all came back.
I had tried to fix it while booting from my DVD but the repairs would not take. Apparently, it had a conflict in my login window and got stuck there. The problem files were left-overs from a Virex problem I had when I upgraded to Panther.
I thought I had cleaned all of those files out but apparently I hadn't.
If it is the same problem as mine, it is fixable without wiping everything out. I am not very good in single user mode but that was the only way the Apple guy could fix it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Apple dvd player problem

    Hi,
I've just spent an age authoring a dvd in dvdsp 4 and the disk looks excellent in everything apart from the apple dvd player. The problem seems to be that after the dvd player plays a video stream it changes its pixel aspect ratio settings to dv rather than square. So the menus all look great until a video is played, after that they all look really pixelated and bad. I have tried the disk in my under the tv dvd player and it looks fine and also VLC on my powerbook and that also looks fine. I have spent lots of time adjusting the original graphics to various sizes and as I said the disk looks fine on everything apart from apple dvd player (and looks fine on that untill a video stream is played).
Any ideas? this is my first post so i'm sorry if it makes no sense.
    Thanks

I myself and a good number of my clients are unable to use Apple DVD Player because of this, the effect is vertical streaks on the screen much like filming the scene during a storm but with green or red rain.
Sorry Gary - never experienced this one before. I'm using 4.6.5 build 4.6.6 - what's yours? I know you have a good set up - but what is it.
More importantly - Flash floods in Corstorphine today too
Now your getting closer to me - i'm up in Buckstone - way up in the hills - although I did start building my survival boat after all the rain - are you near me?
Long shot - assuming you haven't tried this already - bin DVD Player and get a fresh copy, Graphics card issues - lets start the elimination process.

  • DVD player -problem  Please Help!!

    Hi all,
I was trying to play a friend's wedding DVD on my PM G5, and it plays fine until a certain point in the DVD, after which it hangs with spinning beach ball. I then get an error that "disk cannot play either dirty or scratched". I have checked the disk and it is neither dirty nor scratched.
What is puzzling is that I can play the DVD on my home DVD set-top box without any problems. The areas where it would hang while played on the computer, play just fine now! What could be the problem??
Running OS 10.4.3 with 4.6.1 ver on DVD player

Okay, I just tried something I found in a previous discussion which mentioned someone having the problem of audio working only when sound is routed to either the right or left. When sound is set in the center preference option, the dialogue disappears. The music and other sounds are find regardless, so I still a bit baffled.

  • Encore CS3 submenus not looping - in regular DVD player?

    Hi all,
I have a SD PAL project, 1 main movie, 1 main menu and 2 submenus. The total data is around 4,1 GB. My submenus have a video background which lasts for 45 seconds. I have set up the submenus play over again by setting the "end action" back to that same submenu. This works when testing on the PC in Encore. When in the commercial DVD player, my first submenu sometimes loops twice before simply stopping (all playback ceases). The 2nd submenu seems to loop endlessly as expected.
I tried specifyng an amount of "loops" with the end action being back to the main menu.....but only the same result....just stops after 1 or 2 loops.
Additionally, as an experiment, I set an amount of looops for the main menu, with the end action being the main movie chapter one.....but the main menu just kept looping forever!!!!!
Is this a DVD player problem? The DVD's seem to behave correctly on my laptop? I have a LG DVD recorder,
ANy advice appreciated with many thanks!

Well for those who might be having similar issues....I have still got some problems with looping of menus.
In my original project described above, I could not get my 1st (of 2) submenu to loop, as it would just stop at its end. This video background did not have audio - just video. By putting in the the audio that is the other elementary stream of the video - I can now get the submenu to loop. The problem is that now it will not stop looping!
So I have given up and decided to direct the end action to the first chapter of the main movie. So if there is no user action, the scene menu (submenu) simply comes to the end (45 secs) and the main movie starts up. But now................I want that to occur with the main menu, but guess what..........it just loops endlessly!!!!!  I have examined all of the settings:   loop set to "none", override - "not set" , end action set to "main movie C1". But it just loops forever!!!!
I am quite new to Encore, having authored many projects previously with Reel DVD. I never encountered these issues with the former program, but I guess in many ways it is less sophisticated than Encore. I think Encore  is fantastic (except for these issues). But I already starting to look around for another software supplier as I get the impression from the forum that there are a lot of unhappy users of this software.....who seem to quite dissatisfied with the response by Adobe to fixing these issues.....issues that effectively do the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what Adobe Master Suite promises to do......namely -- speed up post production and optimize effiecient production!  For thousands of dollars, one should expect a little better I think.
I did not mention that I am not able to use the pickwhip from dropdown chapter lists as this causes the program to crash every time. I work around this with other ways of making links, but it's just another annoying problem .
I hope someone has some ideas that I could try, and if not, maybe my experience is of help or amusement for anyone who is reading this.
    Thanks.

  • Subtitles in Apple DVD player won't go away

This is not a Tiger problem per se- more of an Apple DVD player problem. I couldn't find a forum for the DVD app. If I'm in the wrong place, I'd be happy to post in the proper place if someone could point me in the right direction.
So I'm running os 10.4.7 on an 800 mhz iMac (flatscreen, "lamp" model), my version of the Apple DVD player is 4.6.5, framework version 4.6.6.
Here's the problem- whenever I watch a movie (this seems to happen only with American DVDs), these QT/OS X looking (beautiful crisp white letters on a highly transparent smokey grey field) subtitles appear, they are independent of the subtitles invoked by the subtitle button in the player- I can toggle through all the languages, they work fine, but the QT/OS X looking subtitles never go away- I'll have two sets running simultaneously. (Or just the QT/OSX one, when I set subtitles to "off")
While they are gorgeous and superior to the "other" set of subtitles (which I CAN control), in both visual appeal and intelligent placement, I would like to be able to turn them off.
I thought a handicap access feature in the System Preferences might have been involved, but it doesn't seem so.
Can someone help me turn this off? Incidentally, these phantom permanent subtitles weren't always here, though I can't really say when they appeared.
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Nosloj2400

Do you have "Closed Captioning" (DVD Player "Controls" menu) turned on? You may have turned it on accidentally via Option-Cmd-T.

  • DVD Player 5.6 and OS 10.8.3

I purchased an LG DVD writer GP60NS50 to go with my MacBook Pro 15" Retina which has no internal DVD player.
When I put in a purchased DVD movie, DVD Player 5.6 starts up and plays the previews, but then it either jams when playing the FBI warning, or it will not let me choose to Play Movie. Once the menu background plays thru its music, DVD Player jams, and I have to force quit.
I can rip the movie to the hard drive, and then DVD Player lets me choose Play Movie, and the movie starts playing.
SO, why does DVD Player jam up on playing a movie from the DVD player? LG says there is no software update on this model, and it is Mac compatible.
I have re-loaded OX 10.8.3 with no change on DVD Player.

    Thanks.
The DVD Player problem solver has no problem listed that covers this.
I have opened my (invisible) User Library and deleted the DVD Player preferences.
    It didn't change anything.
I have region code 1 (US and Canada) chosen for playing DVD's.
I tried opening a movie with VLC. VLC quit.
I tried using Hand Brake to choose the movie. It quit too.
Playing the movie The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest jams up 5 seconds into a 7 second FBI warning.
Playing the movie The DaVinci Code plays all the previews and plays the 66 seconds of audio with the Play Movie choice on the screen. Clicking on anything gives the "Not Allowed" alert. Once the 66 seconds of audio is supposed to repeat, DVD Player jams up and I have to Force Quit.
I was able to rip both movies to the hard drive, and they both play fine with DVD Player from the hard drive.

  • Frame-By-Frame / DVD Player application is missing?

    Hey everybody!
So I finally made the witch and got myself a nice new macbook pro about a month ago! Everything is going well with so far, but I may have just run across a bit of a small problem.
I'm an animator, and I like to be able to study animations frame by frame. I can't really seem to do this in Front Row. Or if I can, I can only go forward frame by frame. I need to go back and forth, one frame at a time. Am I missing a shortcut in Front Row for this?
Furthermore, I can't watch DVDs in front row in any other mode than full screen... I'd rather have it in a small window. This also doesn't seem to be an option with FR.
I would have thought that the program "DVD Player" would help me out, but I can't seem to find it on my computer! So I searched through the site here, and I found an installer - Great! Except that when I run it, I get an error message saying "You cannot install DVD Player on this volume. A newer version of this software already exists on this volume".... But... But... WHERE IS IT??? I've searched my computer for it, but it doesn't show up anywhere. Yet the installer thinks that there's a new version here somewhere.
Anybody have any god ideas as to what's up, or what I can do to watch DVDs in a window (not full screen), frame by frame, back and forth?
    Thanks!
    -Pete

So it seems I fixed most of my problem(s)!
I found a way to extract DVD Player from my install disks (Pacifist). So at least I have that working now. But I still can't frame step backwards... Annoying, but that just seems to be the way, I suppose.
If anybody has any suggestions about working around that problem, that would be greatly appreciated - Otherwise, the full screen and DVD Player problems are resolved.
    Thanks!
    -Pete

  • DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing using a variety of DVDs.  I have OS 10.6.8, and have repaired permissions, verified the disc, and installed the 10.6.8 update combo.  Several previous questions have adressed this problem.  What is the solution?

DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing.  I have seen here that a number of other people have had this problem.  I recently started one DVD, and when I went back to it, it opened to a black screen twice.  It also crashes with other DVDs after I scroll ahead or back.  It gives an error message that it is skipping damaged areas, or sometines error 69889.  Playing this on a PC, however, there is no problem.  I repaired the permissions, verified the disc, and installed the OS 10.6.8 combo update, all to no avail.  Techs told me that it is usually the hardware, so I bought a LaCie external combo drive.  Still crashes.  Looked on Apple downloads and they don't list a 5.4 to replace this version.  Mac informer.com offers a free download for DVD 5.5- should I try this?  Why doesn't Apple fix this problem?

Your suggestions did not help.  I repeated them again after the first try did not succeed.  Any other ideas?
Would installing another copy of DVD 5.4 help?  How can I get another copy of DVD player 5.4, since Apple does not seem to offer it?  I do have the disc for Snow Leopard, but am not extremely tech savy (and maybe it is the same corrupted version).

  • Problems with DVD Player 3.0.1 in G4/466

Problems with DVD Player in G4/466
Yes, I've a g4/466 with two disks. In the first there's system 9.2.2 and the DVD player goes perfect. In the second I've system 10.2 and the 9.2, and the DVD Player (3.0.1) on the system 10 begins to jump in the dock, but stop and nothing happens, I can't open it...
There's any way to reinstal it form system disks???
Or any download to check the error?
    Thanks

    1. Try using Pacifist to extract it from your Mac OS X 10.2 installation disks, and then run the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X and any applicable DVD Player updates.
    2. Open the Console application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and look for lines relating to the DVD Player.

  • Very strange problem with sound in dvd player

    Hi
I have a strange issue which I am cannot resolve. I recently purchased season 2 of NYPD Blue on dvd, region 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008YGRR/qid=1151702794/sr=1-3/ref=sr13/103-1409159-4182204?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130). The season is spread over several discs. The region of the dvds is the same as that of the superdrive on my 1.25 factory spec 15” pb running 10.4.6.(always has been region1) On playing the dvds in dvd player, the sound is very quiet, and you can hear a slight hissing noise (picture is fine). However, if I set the balance of the speakers in system preferences to the left (as far as I can) the sound becomes louder and the hissing disappears. Hence the sound is normal, other that the fact that it is unbalanced. The same happens if I set the balance to the right. Hence the hiss is only there when the balance is set to the centre or around it i.e. slightly to the left or right. This problem is true of all the dvds in the set.
Fair enough, the nypd discs are defective.
However, I then played them in a standalone dvd player without any fancy sound settings etc and no problems at all. Hence I then thought that the problem was with my pb - the only different thing I have done lately is use handbrake to put some of my other dvds (not these NYPD ones) on my iPod, so I thought that handbrake had done something (although I don’t know see how it could have done anything). However, today I tried some other commercial dvds in my pb (produced by the same company) and they sounded fine as has been the case for over two years. Hence, there is something about the nypd blue dvds which affects the quality of the sound output in my pb when the balance is centred. However, whatever this is it doesn’t seem to bother standalone players, nor is it something that anoth of my other dvds have.
Any ideas on what exactly is going on here, as it has me stumped.
(I don't have any other season of nypd blue, so I can't see if these have the same problem as well.)
