DVD player seen by Parallels/Windows but not by Macbook Air
Hi
I have a Macbook Air with Windows running on Parallels. I have a DVD drive connected via a Thunderbolt display. If I put a disk into the drive it is seen by Windows and not by the Macbook Air. How can I get it to be seen by the MBA and is there a way of switching - eg choosing whether the MBA or Windows sees it
Many thanks
Ken
I have a similar problem. I have not used my iPod in a few years. I recently bought a mac. The iPod syncs fine on the windows, but is completely unrecognized by my MacBook Air. I had to buy a USB connector because my iPod had only a firewire cable. Perhaps that's the issue? Disk Utility doe not recognize it. ITunes does not recognize it. In disk mode the screen still reads "OK to disconnect" after I plug it in. Any ideas? (I followed the Rs on the Windows where it's working fine...)
I am abandoning my PC altogether and I am becoming addicted to podcasts. Getting this to work with my MacBook Air would satisfy my new addiction.
Thanks,
T

I use Time Machine with an external HD. That seems to do what I need. Others also recommend an second EHD with a bootable clone of your boot drive and use a 3rd party app like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, Synk Pro, etc. to keep the clone up to date.
In addition to Time Machine I have a hard drive that I keep key files backed up with Synk Pro which does incremental backups, i.e. copying only those new or modified files. For other candidates for the cloning and backup apps to go MacUpdate.com and search for "file backup" and "clone". -
Problem with out going mail. I can send from my iPad but not my MacBook Air, yet settings are the same. Can anyone advise?
Hi sointoit,
If you are having issues sending mail from your MacBook Air, you may find the following article helpful:

I want to send an email and personalize it to several contacts. I could always do it with my old Power PC using Microsoft Office Word for Mac but cannot access my emailoption when I use the Macbook Air. Anyone have a solution??
No way for us to know for sure (without similar product/issues) but the
HP Support site suggests that with the current Mavericks OS X 10.9.x
their drivers should be available through Apple Software Updates:
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/HP-Product-Support-using- Apple-Software-Updates-for-new-OS-X/td-p/3086229
However that may be limited to certain models of printers or scanners that
already had been known to be working under OS X as of that date in a
prior OS X (such as 10.8.5, 10.7.5, 10.6.8, etc) with earlier product support.
•Drivers and Downloads for Printers, Scanners, & More - HP Support:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html
A link to Mac OS X Support's List Printer & Scanner software (HP+ Other)
•OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download
HP Officejet t65 All-in-One Printer
{According to this page, your old printer has only Windows & Linux drivers
but you may or may not look into third-party driver support through such
sites as Gimp; though unlikely to be available with Mavericks, or Yosemite}
•HP Support Forum - Home:
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/?lang=en&cc=us
You may be able to get a deal on a new printer as they are rapidly obsoleted.
PS: edit to add... there was a Gutenprint driver reference for T65 Printer here:
Mac OS X 10.5: Included printer drivers
Yet a driver for ancient Leopard 10.5.x may not be suitable for Mavericks 10.9.x
but the Gutenprint lead may be helpful to locate whatever may exist; or not.

Good luck & happy computing!

Slow speeds on iOS devices but not on Macbook Air
Have 2 iPads in the house together with 2 iPhones - 1 iPhone still has iOS 6 as a comparison - all the other devices have iOS 7.
Problem is download speeds for all these devices. whilst I get 10-12 mbps on Macbook Air over Wi-Fi, all of the above devices only achieve 3--5mpbs.
Have tried renaming SSID, rebooting router etc but no improvement.
There is no difference between any of the iOS devices in terms of spec. etc.
This has only happened in the last couple of months. I have a speedtest result from the start of October which shows 10+ mbps on iPad, so there was no problem back then.
Any thoughts gratefully receivedThanks Texas
I had seen these posts and don't have WMM or QoS on my modem. Have tried making the changes to G and N but this doesn't make much difference.
I was on another wifi network today with the iphone and there was no problem on that, so I know it's something to do with my set up

Hi guys,
I'm having trouble connecting my new MacBook Air to Cisco Anytime Connect VPN.
The same configuration works with my iMac, in the same network and same Mac OS Mountain Lion on both computers.
After successfully connecting to VPN after a few seconds it gets disconnected and, what is worse, WIFI is not working any more in my macBook Air, I need to deactivate it and start again.
With iMac with the same settings it doesn't happen.
Any ideas?
Thanks!Did you power cycle the network? That's always the first thing you want to do if a device is "missing" or not connecting to your network correctly.
If you have not already tried this a few times, power down the entire network...all devices, order is not important.
Wait a few minutes and place the MBAir close to the TC
Start the modem first and let it run a few moments by itself. Then start the TC if it is the device connected to the modem and let it run a few moments. Then start each device one at a time the same way. -
Hi All, I have an Issue with iMessages working from iphone 4s but not from macbook air
Hi everyone, I'm new to MAC's but have had an iphone for a while, so much so I had an iphone 4 but got an iphone 4s, I gave my 4 to my dad, and after recantly buying a MBA tried to imessage the old man but his name turns red and will not allow me to send a message, I can however imessage him from my phone, I have the same issue with two other friends, but I know Imessage works on my MBA as I have two other people it works with (On the side the group Imessage is so cool) we did have an issue with facetime not recognising him untill he switched it off and on from system prefrance on his iphone, not sure if this is related or if this is a MBA issue or iphone issue, but could do with some help as I'm an Apple convert and I'm now hoping to convert the old man who loves microsoft, I told him how 'Apple just work' and at the moment have egg on my face
Please help all surgestions greatlly reacivedWhen sending a message from Mountain Lion's Message program, you should be careful about the recipient's address. When you send a message to your dad, you should send it to his iPhone's phone number.
Also, on your Mac's Messages > Preferences > Accounts, you should be logged in under your Apple ID (which is hopefully different from your dad's).
Enjoy your Apple gear! Indeed, it does "just work". -
My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes. I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes. There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE. How can I get this to work with iTunes again?
1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from
When I try to play a disk that has been burned on a VCR/DVD combo machine, I very often get an error message that says:
"DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from
There was an error reading from disc. It might be scratched or dirty. [-36]"
and then it quits. Sometimes I have been able to play a disc, after several tries, as it errors later and later, but also sometimes not.

DVD plays perfectly on a computer BUT not on a DVD machine
Good Evening all,
Having spent the last four and a half hours trawling the internet for help on this, I can only hope someone out there can help.
I have just delivered what I thought was a pretty decent dvd master (for commercial duplication) to a client, only to hear he's unable to access the menu system (buttons & activation highlights) when he views the disc on a regular DVD player machine.
What am I not doing? I have read but not understood various explanations about an overlay. How do I tally the functions on a remote control with the functions on my menu?
It's not a complicated set up: it's four really short films on one video background.
PLEEEEEASE help me, many thanks!
Cinefilm.Apologies for my delay Nick, got exhausted and went to sleep!
Well, I've started from scratch and am about to trial it on another player BUT as the disc is designed as a commercial accompaniment for a surf product it needs to play as widely as is humanly possible.
Plus I've read this menu function issue does come up quite a lot. Simulator plays everything fine but that's because you're using a mouse and can physically move over buttons.
I'm worried I've not assigned remote control functions correctly, but the user manual is thick with other stuff and not helping me on this one specific query.

I upgraded to OS Yosemite on my MacBook Air...and I cannot upgrade the Adobe Flash download that Adobe keeps asking me to download. I get the screen and when I click on the icon it just creates a new window but not download. Thoughts?
I just tried the link and it is just fine. If the GateKeeper pops up then open Security & Privacy preferences, click on the General tab, set the last radio button to Anywhere.

My phone is not showing up in itunes. I want to sync it. I have a MAC and I have restarted the phone, it's charged, I have the most current version of itunes. What do I do now? It says to reinstall itunes if you have windows but not for mac. Help!
With your phone plugged in, open Image Capture and see if the iPhone shows up. If not, you are having a sync problem. If it shows up in Image Capture, but not iTunes, I'd delete iTunes and reinstall it.

How in the world does Apple market the iPod, etc... as if 10-year olds and grandmothers can operate the technology, when having viewed these message boards for 10 hours yesterday, it seems as even the tech savy people who can make a computer out of two pieces of bread and a piece of bologna have to wrack their brains to make it come a step closer to actually working. Blah!!!
Anyway, the problem that I am having is the problem that a lot of other people are having and seems to be the main theme at the moment.
I am unable to have iTunes recognize my iPod. My PC will once-in-a-blue-moon recognize the iPod as its own drive in Windows Explorer, but mostly all I get is the big freeze. Every time I connect my iPod to the USB, all of the programs cease to operate until I unplug it. I am not having memory problems either.
Here's what I've done. I have updated the iPod Updater to the 06-23-06 version. I was able to get it to update the software on my 60GB iPod. I got all excited only to then have it give me several error messages 1) an internal manager error and 2) some unable to dock or something like that (sorry I'm not at my home cpu.) Once while I was doing the 4-hour battery charge my iPod came up in the source list in iTunes, but I have been unable to have it be rerecognized.
I've unistalled and reinstalled iTunes and the iPod Updater over 10 times and have gone through the 5 Rs as well as all of the steps on
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 (My iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes)
I've even messed with msconfig and tried a whole bunch of other suggestions. It doesn't seem that Apple has a fix for this problem and we are all left with paperweights.
Any suggestions?
Thanks you all and condolences to everyone who is going through this same problem. I swear what happened to plug and play. Pfft!!!You know they are probably going to search me out and crash my computer for posting this but i had the same problem with iTunes. i spent hours, went through the 50000 "R's" and changed my settings and formatted and reset and reloaded and then i tried Realaudio. it found all the songs i had loaded into iTunes and put them on my shuffle first try. you can get Realaudio at <www.real.com> Let me know how it works...

IPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
I have recieved a new IPod video 30Gb off my g/f (how nice of her :D) anyway when I plug it into my computer it will not appear in iTunes, a problem plenty of people are having it seems. The difference being I think I know what caused the problem but I'm having trouble with it still.
When I recieved the Ipod I tried it on my girlfriends computer and it worked fine. She already had an ipod and itunes installed. I was able to add music no problem and it appeared in itunes. She however was having problems downloading on her computer for websites or using download sofware since installing itunes and the problem went away when itunes was uninstalled.
Because of this (there were work arounds so I'm not after a fix for that) I thought I try using other software to see if that stopped me having this problem. This meant when I got my ipod home I plugged the ipod into my computer and did not install anything off the disc. This I believe is what has caused my problem for not being able to see my ipod in itunes.
Anyway I tried to get other software to work (winamp at the time) but couldn't figure it out and so thought I'd just bite the bullet and install itunes and hope I didn't have the same problems as my g/f.
After installing and plugging my ipod in again nothing happened. I checked My Computer and the ipod was there and called PHIL'S IPOD but nothing was in itunes. I then followed all the instructions on here :
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
but it still won't pick up my ipod.
Is there anything else I can try to get my ipod to appear in itunes I really do want to use it but at the minute I can't at all.
Thanks in advance. Two years ago I had to return an ipod mini to the shop for a refund as I could not get it to work. It showed up in windows but not in itunes. I spent about a week trying EVERYTHING, blamed apple for some stupid glitch and gave up. Ten days ago my daughter got an ipod nano, and since we share the same pc I did warn her of what might happen. Yup, it did. Exactly the same problem. Once again I tried all the tricks, the five Rs, renaming the drive, you name it, I did it. Throughout this period though my PC was running a little slow and weird things were happening and despite using Norton Antivirus and other anti spyware I suspected I had not fully recovered from some sort of infection which drove me mad by blasting me with popups for 888 casinos etc. What I thought was really odd was that nothing showed up in Device Manager and having googled around a bit I came across this from which you can download a AproposFix.
So if this sounds like your problem go here:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14679793
and try it. The ipod now works, my daughter turned pink with delight, and my PC is now back to normal speed and all sorts of other seemingly unconnected annoyances have been resolved. I really do wish Apple could be more aware of problems like this as there seem to be many thousands of 'users' (ha ha) out there who look as if they are having similar problems.

Also, try right clicking on the iPod (in My Computer) and go to format. Does anything happen?
