DVD Player sets region all on it's own...

I have never experienced this before. The DVD Player changed the region of the player all on its own. All I did was insert a Region 2 DVD.... Now I will lose the next one, just to revert it to region 1.

Turns out that a more careful reading of help files indicate that the DVD Player abutomatically sets the region the first time a DVD is inserted. No warnings, no dialogue boxes or "yes/no". Be aware!

  • Set my DVD player to Region Code 0?

I have a Region 2 DVD I purchased and playing it forced me to change my DVD player settings from Region 1 so that I could view it on my iMac. I have 3 more changes left and would like to set my DVD player to Region Code 0 so that I can view all the DVDs in my collection without having to worry about this. Is there a fix for this or some 3rd party player I can install?
    Thanks.

    Hi Kort,
Using VLC you have to use option "Open Disc..." then you select the image that fairmount generated (I'm at work so I don't have my mac to check the exact name of the menu option).
This way you could see a DVD from other region without having to change the DVD player region, because fairmount has created a replica of the DVD without the zones protection.
    Hope it helps.

  • External DVD player/burner region free?

    Hi there,
This kind of question has been posted before but the latest thread is from 2006 so I just wanted some up to date information.
My optical drive has been through its 5 changes and has settled on region 2. I want to watch and back up a region 1 dvd. If I were to buy an external DVD player would my mac force it to read only region 2 or would it be region free?
If it is region free does anyone have any recommendations on a good external DVD drive?
    Thanks very much.

As I understand it, it is ultimately the DVD drive's firmware that determines that drive's region setting, not the Mac itself (although it's the Mac that initially lets you change the region stored in that firmware, up to five times). When you first connect an external DVD drive, its region encoding will be whatever the manufacturer set it to be.
If you want true region-free playback, you'll have to find a DVD drive whose firmware can be updated to make the drive region free. This process always used to be much easier on a PC than a Mac; I don't know if that's still the case.

  • DVD Player: multi-region or not?

I have just had my original ailing CD/DVD drive replaced by a new one: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-107D. I inserted a new DVD to watch — a definitely European one — and a message came up, showing Region 1 (which is, I believe, North America), asking me to select a region and warning me that I would only be able to change the region four more times. I was alarmed: my old drive never asked me and was obviously multi-regional. So I ejected the DVD without selecting a region and without playing the DVD and inserted a DVD (again a European one) that I had played before on my old drive. It played with no questions asked. I then went back to the first DVD, and it, too, now played with no questions asked.
I am confused and worried. Has the drive and/or DVD software set itself to a particular region? Presumably not Region 1, because I can now play European DVDs.
Or is my drive (details as above) in fact multi-regional and was the message asking me to choose a region a red herring? I should be very grateful for any information or guidance.

I now realize that this region business is a matter of the DVD player included in my computer, not anything specific to the optical drive. The fact that I received a message that this was the first time I was opening the player and asking me to choose a region must have been because, in trying to sort out earlier computer problems, I had used first Onyx and then DiskWarrior to optimize my hard disk, which may have created new links between the player, the optical drive and other components. I also now realize that VLC will play DVDs and is, apparently, non-regional. So my problem has been solved even if, in the future, I may want to play DVDs from other regions.

  • DVD Player Black Border all aound widescreen image....???

I have a new 17" powerbook running Tiger...and have been playing some DVDs...and the DVD player now puts a 1 1/2" black border all around the widescreen image. This is new to me and I've tried all of the obvious preference options...and switching between different screen sizes (command-0, command-1 and command-2....) and no success.
Has anyone else had this same problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks.

This is not a problem, that's a specific configuration of some DVDs, it happens beucause some DVDs to fit in a 4:3 (fullscreen) TVs put the black borders on the top and botton. When you try to view these movies in a widescreen there will be black borders on the right and left because the format with the original top and botton border is 640 x480 (4:3).
To fix that you just have to select the Otion "Video Zoom" from the Apple DVD Player menu "Window":
There you can strech the movie the way you like to fill your widescreen.

  • DVD player - Drive Region Code

Not sure if this is the right place to post this question...
But in DVD player, I want to play a "foreign" DVD, ie, from the US (I'm in A ustralia). But I get a message that pops up that says that it can't play the DVD because it's on a different DRIVE REGION code. Apparantly you can change the code five times but after that you can't change it anymore.
So my question... I can only change it one more time, after that is there ANY way that i can be changed again? Is there something (a driver perhaps?) that I can dwownload or even purchase?
    Your help is much appreciated!

is it then possible to have two different DVD Player's going on my computer?? Not at the same time, but one won't override the other I imagine? How do I go about buying another one? I'll do a google search...
    Thanks for the tip!

  • Lived in germany for 1 year and changed dvd player setting 6 times between 1 and 2

Hi i lived in germany for one year and had american dvds with me and chnaged between german and english more than 6 times now i am in america and only can watch german videos.
Does somebody now how to change a 7th time?

Wikipedia has some more information in this article, DVD region code:
In most computer drives, users are allowed to change the region code up to five times.[10] If the number of allowances reaches zero, the region last used will be permanent even if the drive is transferred to another computer. This limit is built into the drive's controller software, called firmware. Resetting the firmware count can be done with first- or third-party software tools, or by reflashing (see above) to RPC-1 firmware.

  • Enlargement of DVD player image when DVD is played on an HDTV

I am using iPhoto v. 7.1.3 and iDVD v. 7.0.2 I am trying to export a slideshow from iPhoto into iDVD and playing it as a slideshow on a 16:9 HDTV.
I have made many 16:9 DVDs of our travel pictures using iDVD but imported individual 16:9 copped images from iPhoto (99 to a slideshow) and they have all played okay on our HDTV (small black border around the entire picture, no loss in content), The downside of this approach is that one can only have 99 images per slideshow, thus, to get through all of the pictures, one must return to the opening screen several times, and navigate to other slideshows with the DVD remote.
The idea that a slideshow of any length created in iPhoto and then exported to iDVD would play continuously through all of the images appealed to me.
As a test, I created a small (10 image) 16:9 slideshow (show titles checked) in iPhoto using 16:9 cropped images each with a title. I exported it to iDVD. I created an 16:9 iDVD project, then a slideshow, and dragged the exported movie from my "Movies" folder, into the slideshow, added audio, then moved the slideshow to the gray box in the MAP (so the movie would play on insertion of the disc in a DVD player), clicked on "Professional Grade" and "Always Scale Slides to TV area" in the preferences, and saved as a disc image. When I played the resulting .img file with DVD player, it looked fine so I dropped the Video_TS file in Toast 7.1.3 and burned a disc. When I played it on the HDTV, however, the image was stretched laterally. The image completely filled the TV screen side to side (no small black border along the slides as mentioned above) and the titles in the upper left corner were partially cut off.
I also tried burning the .ing file with Disc Utility, with the same result.
Can someone spot the flaw in my procedure? I can’t understand why I can’t get the same result on my HDTV as I see in DVD player.
If you need more details, let me know.
    Thank you.

Let me give you a 'for instance'.
When I first created a 16:9 DVD with iDVD it looked fine on my computer screen. However, when I played it in my set top DVD player the image on my TV screen wasn't letterboxed as I expected; instead it was magnified with the edges cut off. I got out my set top DVD player manual and noted that the default setting for displaying 16:9 content was 'Pan and Scan' and not 'Letterbox'. I changed my DVD player setting and all is fine.
This happens because iDVD does not set the 'Force Letterbox' flag on the disc. Some people use myDVDedit to modify an iDVD created disk image file to set the 'Force Letterbox' flag. There really isn't any right-or-wrong way to make the disc; it's a matter of personal preference (and some people would rather have the edges cut off than see b;lack bars on the top or bottom.

  • Display issue or DVD player issue?

    I have a project which is aspected 16 x 9.
When it plays on one DVD player it forces it to 4 x 3 and displays it as letterbox and nothing is squashed or stretched. No problem.
    On another DVD player (playing on a 4 x 3 monitor) it plays the 16 x 9 DVD as a stretched out 4 x 3.
Is this likely a DVD player setting? My client is freaking out and wants answers. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have all your settings right (16:9 letterbox) then that is all you can do. DVD players can be set to override your settings and force the video to be 4:3, and there isn't a thing (as the DVD programmer) you can do about it.

  • Applescripting to resize DVD Player window.

I have a malfunctioning DVD player game that won't display the subtitles correctly unless they are forced to be redrawn. The simplest way to do this is to resize the window slightly. Obviously since that's a pain to do constantly manually I tried to script this with a simple repeat. My script works fine for TextEdit or FireFox but I get an error full of garbley-gook when I run it on DVD Player:
    tell application "DVD Player"
    set bounds of front window to {0, 0, 1320, 1047}
    delay 0.5
    set bounds of front window to {0, 0, 1325, 1051}
    end tell
error "DVD Player got an error: UNîp¢$8Ôˇøcepscahp (the forum is editing most of the error out) number -1731
    Any ideas?

I launched VLC (which I already have), browsed the VIDEO_TS folder and clicked Play. Immediately VLC started playing in the correct 16:9 window and the video looked correct.
It seems this must be a woeful discrepancy in Apple's own DVD Player, which I certainly wouldn't have expected. I can use VLC for all similar videos from now on, though it doesn't give me the menu burned by the LG as DVD Player does. However, that's perhaps a small price to pay.

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

  • "Rolling" interference on DVD player

I've run out of ideas so hoping somebody here can think of something I haven't tried.
The office just bought a new DVD player (Panasonic DVD-S53) and VHS (JVC HM-DT100) to transfer video/audio to FCP. Both replaced previous models that needed to be retired. Both are going into a Comprehensive Video Group CVG-4X4s vertical interval switcher.
Here's the problem: the DVD player is having some sort of interference problem that is causing a rolling video 'artifact.' We've tried everything we can think of. Switched cables, switched it from SVHS to regular video out, moved the DVD player away from all electronics, plugged it into another surge protector. Moved the Switcher
It only is affecting the DVD (the output of both goes from the Switcher via the same cable and the VHS looks perfect).
    Any other suggestions?

Huh...other threads have said that using things like MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize will make footage look worse due to the whole 'uncompressing/estimating of missing frames' thing...so who knows what to believe?
Unfortunately need to use DVDs sometimes...some publicists only have B-Rolls on DVD, actors need Demo Reels, etc. etc. etc.
Seem to have figured a work-around (having it go directly to the Sony DSR-45 instead of the switcher...causes a few more steps, but the interference has all but vanished. Still don't understand why the DVD player is the only device affected but...there you go!)

  • How To Get DVD Player Back?

I was once dumb about 2 months ago to go under accounts, click on advance options and simply change the name of my account name. I changed it because I didn't like it; it was the first time i've ever done this and had to manual drag and drop everything from an old account to a new one. My Macbook runs perfectly but I have to assume that the one thing I missed during the process was DVD Player...
Recently I've had to use Front Row only when viewing DVD's. Not the worst thing, but a big downer when I want to surf the web at the same time or work on other apps.
How I can I get DVD Player back?
    All advice is generously welcome.

DVD player doesn't live in a particular user account. It sits in the Applications folder at the root level of the hard drive. Migrating from one user account to another could have no effect on it. As mentioned, you can reinstall it from the install DVD using Pacifist. while you wait for your install DVD, you can use [VLC player|http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html] to play DVDs.

  • Can you change the hotkeys in Apple DVD Player?

I'm trying to change the hotkeys in Apple DVD Player. Really, all I want to do is add a hotkey for slow motion. I need the hotkeys because I'm using a ShuttleXpress shuttle mouse and I want to beable to click a button to put it in slow motion instead of having to use the normal mouse. Thanks

you can easily assign a keyboard shortcut to slow motion in keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts. however what you want is not a shortcut but a reassignment of a mouse button. the only tool I know that might be able to do that is [USB overdrive|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7115]. you'll have to find out if it works with your particular mouse.
