DVD Player "skipping over damaged section" error message after long pauses

On both Imac or macbook (both 10.6.7), when watching a DVD using DVD Player, if I pause a DVD for a while and come back to the application after a few minutes, after click play, I get an error message "Skipping over damaged section" and the dvd skips forward some 30 seconds. I know this has nothing to do with the disk itself (it is not damaged).

I'm also experiencing this on an iMac running 10.6.8.

  • DVD Player "skipping over damaged area"

My macbook has worked wonderfully for a year now. But as of late when I rent DVD's from blockbuster or family video some won't read very well. I always clean the DVD's before I play them and the ones that are having issues are the ones that look very very clean. It does the whole "skipping over damaged area" thing. It's rather frustrating. And the disks are in very good shape. It doesn't do it all the time. But now it's starting to become more frequent. It'll skip a few seconds sometimes and sometimes a whole scene. Any thoughts? I think I'm literally 3 days past my warranty.
    Thanks

Possibly a failing optical drive. Bring the computer to an Apple store as soon as possible, explain the issue, and see what the folks there have to say.

  • Using an early 2011 15 inch macbook pro to watch a rented dvd. the screen displayed a skipping over damaged section message, then the dvd froze. first unable to eject the dvd, now it can't be inserted. Hardware prblm? reset the superdrive?

I was viewing a rented dvd when a "skipping damaged area" message was shown and then the dvd froze. At first I was unable to eject the dvd with the eject botton though the superdrive made "ejecting" noises, and followed the cue "finder using dvd" and ejected it. Now the drive will not accept any dvds. Does this sound like a hardaware problem, or is it possible that some sort of "reset" needs to take place?

Before wasting your time heading to your local Apple Store, try resetting your SMC.  It doesn't work all the time, but sometimes it's just the thing to save you time.

  • DVD player say's it's skipping over damaged area when dvd is fine

I have a problem playing box sets from abc studios on my Macbook Pro. They play perfectly well through the trailers and set up but as soon as I select play all or select an episode, they stop and I either get the error message "skipping over damaged area" before they hang or they just hang straight away. This has happened with four different box sets so far. The DVDs are fine and undamaged.

We have had the same problem ever since we bought our machine 60 days ago... Here's where we are: DVDs, even brand new ones, skip - "skipping over damaged area" on our iMac while our MBP and MB play them flawlessly. There is no loss in the movie, only the pause in play.
Our software is up to date, we took it into Apple over three trips: 1.) had them clean our dvd drive, 2.) problem persisted so we replaced the dvd drive, 3.) problem persisted so we wiped out our entire hard drive and did a software re-install and update... and problem still persists! We are are packing it up for a fourth time and will take it into Apple to have them replace the machine or all the parts...
We're bummed, it's our 3rd Apple computer and the 'biggest' and yet it cannot do the simple things? We'll keep you posted as to what happens.

  • HT2499 I inserted a brand new DVD and it quit half way through and gave me the "skipping over damaged area" message.

I got this laptop refurbished from Apple in July. It was originally released in October 2011. I have watched DVD's on it previously, but lately, in the past 3 weeks, it's been pooping up the "skipping over damaged area" message. I put in a brand new DVD and half way through, it did it again, and I can't get past it. Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

You can just open Terminal (in Utilities) and run the rm command (make sure you type it exactly) and then reboot.  With /.AppleSetupDone gone the system will think it is the the second part of an installation, i.e., after it installs and reboots and starts the Setup Assistant.  You will see the Welcome and music all over again and then you can go through the setup prompts again, this time specifying a password.

  • Burned DVDs Skipping over damaged area

My C2D 1,83GHz Mac mini (10.5.2) has problems with burned DVD movies. Both DVD Player and VLC will crash or give an error at some point: *Skipping over damaged area*. VLC will just crash and DVD Player will hang, you can´t pause or rewind.
The movies will play just fine on a standalone DVD Player. Commercial DVDs (not copied) will work just fine also. I´ve been using Verbatim DVD-R dics and the same movies play just fine in my PowerBook G4 and my MacBook Pro. I just got a movie from a friend on a TDK disc and that disc did not cause any probelms on the mini. What could be the problem? Is there a problem with the drive? I´ve tried burning the discs on 3 different Macs but that doesn´t seem to make a difference.

I can't help but wonder if this is an issue relating to whatever means has been used to burn the movies rather than the drive or the discs - particularly since commercial DVDs play properly.
It may be, for example, that the software used to rip or duplicate the originals has mis-read the original due to copy protection, and the disc is therefore not copied fully.

  • Dvd skipping over damaged area

    Hi,
This is in reference to a MacBook Pro DVD issue:
    13-inch, Early 2011
    Processor: 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
After inserting the Prometheus DVD disk I get the message right away: "Skipping over Damaged area"
When I put the same disk on another PC or DVD player the DVD plays without issues. I also tried other DVDs on this MBP and they play without issues. Is there any known issue or fix for this problem?
    Thank you,
    Christopher

    Get a replacement disc.

You would need to have burned the disc using iDVD or a third-party application such as Toast. Is that what you did?

  • Skipping over damaged area??? Help!

My DVD player does not play DVDs correctly! Moments after i put in the dvd a message will come up on the player saying "Skipping over damaged area".... But here is the thing... These dvds arent damaged! They are new!
Please someone from Apple or anybody who knows what is going on.... please help.

    Hi benrmay18,
Unfortunately, this is a user-to-user discussion board so no one from Apple is going to respond directly to your inquiry. Do all DVDs give you this error message or only specific ones? Have you tried movie DVDs or data DVDs?
If ALL DVDs are giving you this error message it's probably worth bringing the machine into an AASP or Genius Bar for additional diagnosis. It's possible that the drive (or the laser in the drive) is the problem.

  • Home DVD Player skipping

I am tired of my home DVD player skipping at random spots while watching a movie. I can take the same DVD that is skipping on my home DVD player, and watch it on my computer's DVD player and there is no skipping. The DVD player isn't bad; well, unless I bought 2 consecutive bad ones in a row (but I doubt it).
My main focus here is: Are there DVD players on the market that have a pre-fetch of some kind? I was hoping that this would eliminate the skipping that is being seen most of the time in my home. The DVD's I am playing while the skips take place are scratch-free and commercially manufactured. I figured if there was a 15-sec to 30-sec pre-fetch, that any reading problem encountered can be taken care of by the time the player has reached the next point in the movie.
If there is such a thing as pre-fetching, is it called pre-fetching when I look for it on the box? Are there other features that I can look for that make viewing a movie smoother. Even if I do have a scratchy DVD, are there players that are specifically built to read through these imperfections? And if so, what would I look for in the features section that tells me a certain player can read scratchy DVD's better than others?
I've always settled for the cheapest, in home electronic equipment. Now, I'd rather look at other dimensions in home entertainment, besides the cheapest price. I'm not always thinking that the most expensive is the best, but there's a happy median somewhere, I hope.
    Thanks,
    Terry

Buy a reasonable quality brand DVD player.  The cheapest ones have weak lasers and/or poor thermal management (My family's first DVD player would warm up the disc to the point where you'd have to eject it and let it cool down after an hour or two, or it would start skipping)
You don't need the most expensive, I agree, but don't get the absolute cheapest.  Look at reviews of various players to see what people say.  DVD players already do some buffering, but some of the cheapos have such weak lasers they simply can't read discs reliably once they warm up.
ALSO:  In general, my experience is that DVD recorders do a better job at reading discs than read-only drives (due to the fact that the laser and thermal management are WAY more than that which is needed for just reading a disc.)  For a long time, my Pioneer 4x DVD-R drive would read discs nothing else would read (this was back when DVD-R drives were new and quite expensive.)

Trying to make a dvd from a project and this error message appears .The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (-2125)

    Hi
    Error -2125
OK Error code - 2125 usually indicates that the movie is to large.
It use to pop up when going to iDVD !
iDVD - DO NOT CARE ABOUT Gbs at all. I got movies on 500Mb that do not fit and 50Gb that fits nicely.
iDVD - ONLY CARES ABOUT - Duration. Duration is Movie time + MENU TIME. Choice of
menu and animation of this can take lost of "DURATION" 15 minutes or even more.
Choice of encoding method and use of SL or DL DVDs determine the DVD limit.
    iDVD 08 & 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
DL DVDs can store about double of these times.
ALTERNATIVE - The Error Code can indicate that free space on Start-up (BOOT) hard disk is
    less than 25Gb (my minimum)

  • Satellite L300-H02: DVD/CD drive don't work - Error message 39

    Hi all,
I just purchased a Toshiba Laptop, running Vista Premium Home Edition, and after a massive Windows update download, the DVD-CD drive didnt work. Error message 39, corrupt or missing driver. The driver isnt missing, so it must be corrupt. Am savvy with regedit regarding removal of upper and lower filters from the registry, except havent action the removal yet, as there doesnt appear to be an upper filter listed. Only the lower filter.
Also, the information states you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs. which is a problem, as Vista etc. was already loaded and no other software came with the laptop.
Im a little chicken to go ahead and remove the lower filter registry entry, seeing as theres no upper entry to delete, plus I've heard some people can't write to CD after removing the filters in the registry.
Where can I get information on the CD-rom drive for this model: pslboa-08h022 ?
There isn't any information on it in the System Information.
    Thanks in advance folks, Anniebird

Thanks andrej, I appreciate your help.
This seems to be the only solution I've been able to track down, although I was looking for a better one. I rang Toshiba support, and they said Toshiba could not be held responsible for any advice followed on the Windows website.
If the filters aren't necessary to the running of the DVD drive, why are they there? I don't want an impaired DVD-OM drive that is unable to function in writing mode.
Toshiba phone support said to remove the hardware from the Device Manager (CD-Rom Drive with ! displayed), then download a new driver from: http://www.isd.toshiba.com.au/drivers
I have a feeling this driver is already on my computer, but will follow through with his advice. If this doesn't work, he said the only other thing to do would be a system restore. Which means reinstalling ALL the programs and files I so laboriously installed a few days ago.
I only purchased this notebook on the 11th September!!! I am fast becoming disillusioned with both Toshiba and Windows Vista. I want a first rate product functioning as it should, not a headache to be endured.

  • Error message after Upgraded from 2.53ghz (533 FSB) to 3.2ghz (HT)

    Hi! everyone,
As you can see i'm a newbie on this board, however I've frequently visited here once in a while.  Anyway, the problem I currently have after I upgraded my cpu from 2.53 ghz to 3.2ghz HT (Northwood) is that I not very often (few times so forth since monday) see this error message after reboot my pc :
    ***Message starts here***
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error restart your computer.  If this message appears again, follow these step:
Run system diagnostic utility supplied by your hardware manufacturer.  In particularly run a memory check and check for faulty or mismatched memory, try changing video adapters.
Disable or remove any newly installed hardware or drivers....etc.

    ****Message ends here****
As i stated before I've never seen this message before the upgrade.  So, here is my configurations:
    BEFORE
    875P NEO-LSR w/ BIOS v. 2.0
    2.53ghz 512 FSB CPU
    9500 Readon 128mb video card
Dual IDE HD 80gb & 160 gb (NON SATA)
    1gb Dual channel memory (512mb on channel 1  -  512mb on channel 3) (KINGSTON pc2700 module)
    CURRENT
    857P NEO-LSR w/BIOS v. 2.0
    3.2ghz 800 FSB 512mb (L2 cache) CPU
    9500 Readon 128mb video card
Dual IDE HD 80gb & 160 gb (NON SATA)
    1gb Dual channel memory (512mb stick on channel 1 - 512mb stick on channel 3) (KINGSTON pc2700 module) *
    * may be this causes this error message because as I read it on the discription page of the 875P NEO-LSR that it will only support DUAL channel (PC3200 type) with HT CPU.  So, i suspect this may cause the problem but I havent try to rearrange my memory to one channel (1 x 2) yet.
I will greatly appreciate it if someone in here who may has experienced it before or know what all this means.  Please advise

    Thanks for your advise bejon2000.
Here is my situation, I just freshly installed Windows XP Pro w/SP2 prior to this cpu upgrade ...I did the os last weekend and upgraded the cpu the day or two after which is monday of this week.  So, can I just do the BIOS update now with the os already inplaced ???  I assum the aswer is yes, however I just wanted to confirm before I do it, you know
I've SiSoftware Utilities 2004 installed on the system as well, and after I did the Performance Tune-Up in SiSoftware ...This is what I got

Hello, I'm using attribute cl_gui_alv_grid=>mc_style_button to put some cells in my ALV as buttons. I need that when the user push those buttons an event is raised. Does someone have any example of buttons in ALV cells? Thank you and regards.
