DVD Player v5.4 beginning to hang rather than play

I am running a Mac Pro tower with OS X 10.6.8 in it. I use it for many tasks including previewing commercially made DVDs.  Up until two days ago it worked perfectly.  Then it started hanging.  When I put a DVD into the computer it is recognized and DVD Player starts.  The disc loads and shows the typical Warning message regarding not pirating the disc then at the spot where this warning should leave the screen, the player hangs.  None of the buttons on the remote work.  Trying to eject the disc gets a message stating the disc can't be ejected as it is being used by DVD Player.  The only way to stop the program is to use a Force Quit.  This, naturally, sends a message to apple detailing what was happening. I allow this message to be sent.
The discs are not defective as they play just fine in my ancient iMac and on my blu ray DVD player.
Is it possible to load a fresh copy of just the DVD player or do I need to do a reinstall of the OS?
Thanks for any suggestions sent this way.

Does it display a Menu at the end of the presentation / movie? If so, open Map View and select the very first or top box and hit the delete key. You'll see a "puff" and then it's no longer an Autostart Dvd but rather you'll now see a Menu at the very start of the Dvd.
In the past one had to drag and drop the movie or slideshow to the first box where it says "drag content here" for it to be an AutoStart Dvd. But the software engineers made a little change where it now at times defaults to an AutoStart Dvd.
Some folks on this forum suspect it's apple's attempt at trying to make iDvd easier to use. But in reality, it's actually making for the reverse scenario since many mac users don't particularly appreciate this added / default feature .
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

After playing the song I selected in iTunes 11 it jumps to the another album rather than playing the next song on the original album I selected.  ***?  How do I fix this?!?!?

I found that clearing the "Up Next" list fixes the problem.  But I have to clear that list everytime I just want to hear just that one album.  Each time I select on song on the album, the "Up Next" list builds it's own list rather than just play through the album.  I think this has something to do with the issue.  How can I fix this?!?!

  • The album downloaded except one song. It says purchased rather than play and there is no option to try and download the one song that had an error.  I deleted the song name from our library, but it still won't let me download. Any advice?

  • My slideshow played on the dvd player but was blurred. also it wouldn't play on my laptop!

Why was the pictures blurred when I played it on my dvd player?
The slideshow wouldn't play on my laptop!

WE can't know anything. You have not provided any details about your images, your procedures, your system and in fact we don't even know what program you are referring to. And on a more general note I think you simply do not understand the technical limitations of the DVD format. All images will be sized to 720x576 pixels and that's it. As a result, even the best high-res images may end up looking garbage...

  • I'm getting the rainbow wheel when I try tp pen in internet page (Safari). The page half loads then appears to freeze with the rianbow wheel.  I get the same result when I try to stream a movie from NETFLIX.  Freezes up rather than plays (after loading).

I get the rainbow wheel when I try to open an internet page. It loads halfway, then freezes, with the rainbow wheel whirring around. Smae thing happens when I try to stream a movie on Netflix.  The movie loads, then the wheel shows up and the screen freezes.  Same thing when I try a DVD, it takes the disc, but won't play when I hit on PLAY.
I am repair permissions, and all that I can do, but I am a novice.  Any help would be greatly appreciated because I spend big bucks and drive 40 miles to get Apple help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.

  • Problem with importing photos to MBP: The new event shows up at the beginning of Events rather than at the end

When I imported photos on my older Mac computers G4 and G5), the new event would show up as the last event in EVENTS. With my new MBP, the new event shows up consistently at the beginning of EVENTS (actually as the second event), and it is a big inconvenience to have to drag it to the end (through some 500 events). How can I change this? Thank you for your help!

If you have the sort set to manual then you must manually sort the events as you choose - there is no "sort manually the way I am thinking" setting - manual is manual - and for what ever reason with the current version of iphoto second from the top is where events start for you to then manually put where you want
BTW - events are a poor choice for organizing photos and extremely inflexible (as you are seeing) - albums and folder are much more powerful and flexible and are the better way to organize photos

  • How do I save, rather than play, a file?

I'm using Google Desktop Web Clips Gadget and one of the feeds I've got is a podcast from the radio. Unless I completely UNINSTALL every trace of Quicktime, when I click on the RSS link in the gadget, Quicktime grabs it and starts to PLAY it, giving me no chance to SAVE it anywhere to transfer it later to a mobile device. I've tried unticking all the Quicktime boxes so that it is NOT the default player but this makes no difference. In the download gadget there's no option to 'Save Link as' (or similar) by right-clicking the mouse. Any suggestions out there?

You could do something like this (Or check out other exciting ways with java.io),
    PrintWriter out =
       new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(fileName)));
    out.write(stuff);
    out.close();

  • Firefox - asking to Save/Download SWF rather than playing it inside IFRAME

Hi all, I have encountered a very strange thing with an SWF we have recently authored.
My client insists on embedding a FlashPlayer 9 SWF inside an IFRAME given the limitations of their content management system.
When they use this method to embed an SWF authored by us 6 months ago, everything behaves as expected - the Flash loads and plays within the IFRAME on their website.
When they use the very same method to embed an SWF from the same FLA authored by us this month, Firefox brings up the "Save File / Download" dialog box instead - the SWF does not play but instead is seen as a downloadable file.
I have verified this behaviour on a number of different computers that all have had no issues playing Flash content across all versions (Flashplayer 8 - 10).
What should we do to fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • How to download a music file rather than play it on my iPad 2?

    Hi there
I am a novice iPad user so please excuse my ignorance.
I have access to an online storage facility where the choir I am a member of shares mp3 files for us to download and learn. For some reason when I try to download these mp3s on my new iPad it just plays them and I don't get an option to download even if I click and hold the icon. I am clicking a download icon not just clicking on the mp3 file itself.
This also happens on another website where I have the option to download audio for a support video. Again the download option opens a new safari tab and plays the audio without giving me any way of actually downloading the file and keeping it on my iPad.  As far as I know anyhow.
Any and all advice welcome :)
    Thank you,
    Mary Mouse

I did search for answers to this question before I posted, really I did. But having posted it some related questions popped up with just what I was after!
Following the advice in those I have now downloaded GoodReader and managed to save my first mp3 file into this application.
I now have another question - does anyone know if you can transfer a GoodReader audio file into iTunes? I like to organise my choir files into playlists by concert.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mary Mouse

  • Phone shuffles songs rather than playing them in order.

I know there is a shuffle button above the top song on my playlist. If I don't want the songs to shuffle, don't I just tap the first song under "shuffle" == and then shouldn't it play in the order the songs are listed??
    What am I doing wrong?
    thanks.

With a song in this Playlist selected and in portrait view for the album cover, select the album cover to bring up the time remaining on the song.
To the left of the time remaining indicator is the repeat button/icon and to the right of the indicator is the shuffle button/icon.
Is the Shuffle button/icon selected? If selected, it is blue.

In the thread "PLEASE HELP- region codes" in "Discussions > iDVD > iDVD4 and earlier", using Panther I reported " I inserted a different region code disc, got the message that I only have 3 changes left, then the error -70001. "
After upgrading to Tiger last August I reported " just upgraded to Tiger 10.4.0 and the problem was still there.
Then I installed the software updates to 10.4.2 and DVDPlayer 4.6: I am now allowed to change the region code."
Howwever, last month I had the problem again, possibly after installing 10.4.3: "3 changes left" and "error code -70001" on inserting a disc with a different region code.
The solution I found was to use VLC, a DVD player which ignores the region code, rather than the mac os X DVDPlayer.

  • Disc burned with iDVD will not play in DVD player only on MAC

I used iMovie to create a movie and then shared it with iDVD. I successfully burned the DVD through iDVD but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays fine on the iMac. It is in UDF format. After reading through posts, I saved the file as a disk image and then burned through Disk Utility. This plays fine but I would really rather burn the disc directly from iDVD. Any ideas why the DVD player says "This type of disc cannot be played"?

Media quality affects the burn errors on a disc. Computer players tend to have better error correction (to preserve digital data) - set-top DVD players tend to have poorer error correction since the are designed to play commercial, stamped DVDs with low error rates.

  • DVD Player in OS X Maverick

We are running Maverick on MacBook Pro 2011 recently updated to Maverick.  We have tested a DVD and it does run, but it hangs when you try to move the handle to a certain time in the movie.  The movie works great in an iMAC with an older version of OS and DVD Player.
The DVD player that seems to be hanging is ver 5500.48.2 build 5.5f80 (1).  I did run Disk permission repair and repair on disk as well.
What do I need to do to make this work?

Did a clean Lion install on my Late 2009 MacBook and have also been experiencing consistent issues with DVD Player.  Upon launching (or attempting to), the application name appears along the top menu bar and icon appears in dock, but nothing else appears (player window or controls).  Secondary click on the dock shows "Force Quit" automatically.  This can happen whether I open DVD Player from Launchpad, dock, or Finder.
Seems to take about 3 or 4 attempts, then suddenly, it works.
    EDIT ...
Should note that this consistently happens when I immediately try launching DVD Player after waking MacBook (about the first 30 seconds to 1 minute).  I've also found that my Wi-Fi connection doesn't work during this time.  Snow Leopard did not behave this way on same machine.

  • IDVD autoplay movie won't play in DVD player

My IDVD movie won't play in a DVD player when created in autoplay mode. It plays fine on my computer both in preview and on my computer's DVD player program and it works fine if I create a menu and button, just not if I create it in autoplay mode. I've tried it on my work compter and three DVD players and it won't play in any of them. Can anyone help, please?

    Hi Sue
    Thanks for responding.
I used a 16x Maxwell DVD-R. The same kind of disc worked fine with the movie when I had a menu.
    I'm afraid I don't know what a Patchburn is.

    Hi JosefK:
    Welcome to discussions.
Did you use a Data DVD by chance?
It needs to be a DVD-R with iMovie 4.
Are you using an external with Patchburn?
