Dvd player (version 5.7) keeps quitting
I updated to 10.10 and now my dvd player (version 5.7) keeps quitting unexpectedly; that's the message I see when I have tried to open the app. Am I missing an update? I have already restarted the computer and it wasn't effective. What else can I try?
Update...
I found that if I try to insert a DVD disc in and let the computer read and recognize it as a DVD. It will open up to the Main Menu of the disk and hang. I can quit the application and it shows closing; but I still have to go into Activity Monitor and Force Quit the application in order to get the disc out.
Now, if I open up the DVD Player before I insert the disc. I have no problems with the disc playing. It reads the Menus and Chapters just fine. And once I close the application, I also have no problem ejecting the disc.
Still looking for suggestions as to what might be causing the issue that I am seeing.
Thanks

DVD player goes fullscreen, will not quit
Hello. I'm posting this here as I was unable to find a forum for DVD Player.
When I put a DVD in, DVD player launches, goes full screen, will not minimize, will not stop, only way to crash is to F11 and then kill the app with a mouse click (right-click on a multi-button mouse, force quit).
I now live in fear of putting a DVD in my drive.
How do I stop this?
Mac OSX 10.9.1.Try deleting the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder. But remember:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

DVD Player Version 5.0.1 crashes with Leopard
Good morning
Leopard is working fine on my PB, but when starting a DVD, the DVD Player crashes the whole system. It is so bad, that I have to "force restart" (on/off button) the machine.
Any idea how I can fix the problem. I allready reinstalled Leopard from the bottom up, but it did not help.
Thank you for your help and assistance.
Mediapet1The problem is an Leopard update relased by Apple:
Leopard Grafics Update 1.0.
It is a separate file, which can be easily deactivated in the Software Upgrade Window.
Do not install this upgrade on a PB G 4 1.33 machine. If you do a "Archive and Install" to get your DVD back to work, make sure, that you DO NOT install the mentioned upgrade. I you do, "adios" DVD player. Shame, Apple did not tag this upgrade to not be installed on this models. It reminds me a bit of the PC world...

ThanksHi Maria
This one is though.
a. More info most probably needed:
• Mac OS X.4.1 (as You writted at page-foot) - I would use X.4.10
• QuickTime version ? ? 7.? ?
• Apple DVD-player version ? v4.0 ?
b. Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
Many possible origins. Most common:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc if it is less than 10Gb should raher have 25Gb
• Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)

DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from
When I try to play a disk that has been burned on a VCR/DVD combo machine, I very often get an error message that says:
"DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from
There was an error reading from disc. It might be scratched or dirty. [-36]"
and then it quits. Sometimes I have been able to play a disc, after several tries, as it errors later and later, but also sometimes not.

Burned a DVD but has bad glitches when I played in DVD player
Hey-
I have the rights to the dvd I am trying to burn, I was told to use disc utility to burn a copy and it did burn it but it turned out glitchy like when someone has Dish Network or Direct TV and it rains. The picture is there but freezes and glitches and the sound is kinda there too. What did I do wrong and what do I need to use or do to burn a good copy?
My friend says they may have sent me a locked copy of my dvd and that I will have to contact the place that made it for me but I would think it wouldn't have burned at all if that was the case and I sure as **** would have had to pay for the right for a locked copy.I made a disc image saved it and burn the copy, I followed these directions:
Insert your DVD into your Mac. Most Macs will automatically launch DVD Player. Once it launches, quit it. You should see your DVD disc mounted on your Desktop.
Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). Select the DVD disc from the list on the left. You will notice that there are two DVD icons--select the one slightly indented (this is the DVD itself, whereas the first one is the drive).
Click on "New Image" in the Disk Utility main window.
Choose a name and a destination from the "Save As..." window. Keep in mind that your destination should have enough space to copy the entire DVD, which can be over four gigs.
In the "Save As..." window, be sure the "Image Format" selection is set to "DVD/CD Master" and the "Encryption" selection is set to "none". Click Save.
After copying the DVD to your destination drive, return to Disk Utility. Your new Disk Image will appear in the list on the left of the Disk Utility window. Eject the original DVD disc from your Mac.
Insert a writable DVD disc into your Mac. Select your newly created Disk Image from the list on the left of the Disk Utility window. Click on "Burn" in the Disk Utility main window. Select your burn speed and whether you would like to Verify Burned Data.
You will receive confirmation once you DVD is successfully burned and you are all set with a fresh copy of your DVD disc. Simply save your new Disk Image and you can make a copy whenever you may need it.
When I played it in the DVD player, it loaded and began to play but was distored like when the TV glitches in a storm. You could see that it had attempted to burn correctly but something caused it to not turn out right and the audio was just as messed up.
I didn't use a great quality disc but my friend burned her iMovie on them just fine. They are 16x so maybe that is my problem, not sure does this help you to know what I am doing wrong???!! -
What is wrong with DVD player 5.0.3?
Not only is there the really annoying corruption reports on discs that work fine with VLC:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9834535#9834535
but my DVD player version 5.0.3 on Leopard 10.5.7 has started another irritating habit. Periodically, for no particular reason it jumps out of full-screen mode into a small window. It does this on both my Macbook Pro and my new iMac.
Is there a way to install a previous working version? Or another solution?I am having the same issue with my 1.83 mac mini and DVD player 5.0.3 - very annoying
(I use the mac mini exclusively for watching hulu, netflix, itunes, and DVDs) -
DVD-R discs will not play on DVD Player
The DVD-R discs I made will not play on DVD Player Version 4.0.
I transferred VHS to DVD-R using an RCA VHS/DVD Recorder. The discs played well in 3 different DVD players but will not play on my i-book.
Please help?
New At This
i-book G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)In a nutshell the problem is the fact that the Software used by the RCA recorder is for PC.
When recording DVD's the software that is available varys greatly.
Some of the top of the line software gives options to burn PC only, MAC only, and PC or MAC combined.
It was also brought to your attention to use VLC Player on your Mac the firmware that is used with this player will sometimes allow for playing DVD's that were burned on these VHS to DVD Burners.
Here are a few tips that affect reading and writing DVD. This link is only a small amount of what can and does affect, I suggest you do a Google search to learn all you can.

Screensaver in Apple DVD Player - what does this mean?
Hello,
I am building a dvd based kiosk using a MacPro and Apple DVD player running to a large plasma monitor. The setup works great except for the fact that when the kiosk is not being used, the menu screen will cause a burn-in on the monitor (this monitor does not offer display tracking, anti-burn technology). It appears that in DVD Player version 4.6.5., Apple has taken this into account and offered a preference under "Full Screen" to "Allow Screensaver on DVD menu in kiosk mode" - this sounds like what I need. However when I select this option, and kiosk mode, the screensaver never starts. I have played around with all of the settings in the DVD player and screensaver, but nothing works. - thanks you in advance for any suggestions!!!!
MacPro 2ghz Mac OS X (10.4)I think I just answered my own question!
I can get around using a screensaver if I set DVD Studio Pro to timeout the main menu to a looping "screensaver type" video that I can create. This would allow the viewer to watch any video on the DVD, which would end by going to the main menu, which would then stay on the screen for two minutes, and then start the "screen saver video", I can then put a clear screen size button over the entire screen, so that the user can press enter to sent them back to the main menu. This will actually work a lot better than the Apple screensavers anyway.. -
APPLE DVD PLAYER 5.0 HD PLAYBACK NOT SUPPORTED IN LEOPARD!
Using TIGER I have been able to play the HDDVD containing the HVDVD_TS folders created with DVD Studio PRO 4, using the Apple DVD player, either from the hard drive (Open DVD Media) or from a DVD recorded by DVDSP4.
I am very dissapointed with LEOPARD because the HD feature of the Apple DVD player is not supported and missing from the preferences of the player.
What is the problem?. Is Apple turning its back on its HD customers?. I thought by now, we would not only be able to play our home made HD DVD's, but also the commercial discs with the new player and operating system. Apple has always been at the forefront of home video editing. I want to be able to preserve my HD footage as HD on optical media to play on all HD players. It is embarrassing that Windows already has software to record and play HD and Blu-ray commercial discs, but Apple does NOT!!
I tried using the older Tiger DVD player (version 4.6.5) with Leopard, but the HD support is still missing.
PLEASE HELP ME RESTORE THIS FEATURE TO THE APPLE DVD PLAYER WHICH IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT OR MY HOME VIDEO EDITING AND BURNING!!!The HD tab in my player preferences dissappeared when I upgraded to Leopard. The supported features under the HELP menu of the new DVD player displays "HD UNSUPPORTED". This changed when I upgraded to Leopard. I am still running Tiger on my wife's Imac Intel and the HD is supported. I copied the OLD DVD player from her computer unto my hard drive and the HD tab is missing and HD is unsupported. I am assuming it is a problem in Leopard in my iMac G5. I know that HD is supported on the iMac G5's as stated in the help MENU, and I had been using it all along. I don't know where to go for help on this. Can you guide me?
Thanks -
Did Apple Break HD-DVD Playback with Mountain Lion using Apple DVD Player?
First of all, kindly spare me the commentary about Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD. Agreed and not the question. I have perfectly good reasons for using HD-DVD and it works very well for my purposes.
I authored an HD-DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2. as I have done many times before on Snow Leopard, but this time on Mountain Lion. When I try to play the HD-DVD, either from the physical disk from a disk image, the menu appears, but when the play button is pressed, the menu stays on screen, but the player shows the timecode of the movie playing, but with no sound or picture.
Thinking that perhaps the menu got corrupted, I put the same HD-DVD into a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and it played perfectly! Conclusion: Not a DVD Studio Pro problem.
Thinking that it might be DVD Player, I copied DVD Player 5.4 from the Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (which was running DVD Player 5.6), and the HD-DVD still had the same issue on the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, under either of the DVD Player versions. Conclusion: Not a DVD Player issue.
The HD-DVD does mount and initialize, so it's not a hardware issue with the optical drive.
Conclusion: It would appear to me that it's an OS issue with Mountain Lion breaking (either intentionally or unintentionally), HD-DVD playback. Anyone know anything more about this issue? Anyone else saddened to see Apple turn into Microsoft circa 2005, and the MacOS turn into Vista? I haven't seen much of anything about it in the forums, which is why I'm posting it here.
Thanks Apple. I just spent the better part of 3 days transcoding and authoring this HD-DVD, only to have you screw it up for me 2 days before my film festival (the perfectly good reason for using HD-DVD). Kindly spare me the, "Why don't you encode a ProRes blah blah blah quicktime movie." Heard it all before.
I knew I would regret upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I do more and more each and every day as I continually find more things that it broke. Yet another reason to add to my list for downgrading to Snow Leopard. I'm up to about 30 of them. Or to abandon Final Cut for Adobe products.
Thanks and sorry for the rant, but I'm justifiably frustrated.Update: The Apple Store in Nashua, New Hampshire replicated the issue on their own hardware, so yes, Apple did break HD-DVD playback with Mountain Lion (it does still work in Lion, they discovered). The Apple Store reported the issue to engineering, but the more people that report the issue, the more likely Apple will do something about it. Thanks Apple.

Does DVD player support PAL and foreign dvd's?
I am debating on whether or not to purchase a Dvd on ebay because it is in PAL format and I don't know what that means. Will my regular U.S. dvd player be able to play the movie? And will the dvd player application on this computer (i have dvd player version 4.0)?
Thank YouThanks David,
So, England uses PAL too. Now I know. Where is England anyway? Isn't that an American colony? Or is it an island just north of Australia? - Just playing with ya David We won't talk about the cricket either!
Steven,
You have five chances of changing the region settings on your Mac drive. After that it is locked at that region setting forever. As I said before, America uses NTSC, so your locally bought DVDs will not play on that player unless it supports NTSC playback. If it is region free then there is no issue with regions, but it must have NTSC playback or it is useless in the states. -
HT2499 DVD Player app keeps quitting
DVD Player app keeps quitting
Hi Sean,
Only thing I can think about trying as a test, is try Disc Utility to see if it can make a DVD DMG of the same files as a test. -
DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing. I have seen here that a number of other people have had this problem. I recently started one DVD, and when I went back to it, it opened to a black screen twice. It also crashes with other DVDs after I scroll ahead or back. It gives an error message that it is skipping damaged areas, or sometines error 69889. Playing this on a PC, however, there is no problem. I repaired the permissions, verified the disc, and installed the OS 10.6.8 combo update, all to no avail. Techs told me that it is usually the hardware, so I bought a LaCie external combo drive. Still crashes. Looked on Apple downloads and they don't list a 5.4 to replace this version. Mac informer.com offers a free download for DVD 5.5- should I try this? Why doesn't Apple fix this problem?
Your suggestions did not help. I repeated them again after the first try did not succeed. Any other ideas?
Would installing another copy of DVD 5.4 help? How can I get another copy of DVD player 5.4, since Apple does not seem to offer it? I do have the disc for Snow Leopard, but am not extremely tech savy (and maybe it is the same corrupted version).

I typically run with the same six tabs open in Firefox. Until the day before yesterday, if I closed Firefox with these six tabs open, the next time I opened the browser, the same six tabs would open in the exact same order. That ended yesterday. Now
