DVD Player window won't resize properly

I have several DVDs recorded on an LG DVD recorder that are the wrong aspect ratio (they play what should be 16:9 as 4:3, making everything look tall and narrow). I have tried everything in DVD Player to fix this, but only one thing works :
Select Video Zoom
Deselect "Lock aspect ratio"
Select Manual mode and move "Width" slider until picture looks correct
At this point, the adjustments have moved the left and right edges of the video out of the Viewer window. "Hey, no problem" I thought, "I'll just resize the Viewer window horizontally until the whole video is showing".
Unfortunately, I can't. Dragging the bottom right of the Viewer window resizes it both horizontally and vertically DESPITE the "Lock aspect ratio" box being unchecked. In other words, it wants to preserve a 4:3 aspect even though I have adjusted the width slider manually.
What I'm left with, is a window that shows the video undistorted, but with the left and right edges missing. What am I doing wrong, or this a bug in DVD Player?

I launched VLC (which I already have), browsed the VIDEO_TS folder and clicked Play. Immediately VLC started playing in the correct 16:9 window and the video looked correct.
It seems this must be a woeful discrepancy in Apple's own DVD Player, which I certainly wouldn't have expected. I can use VLC for all similar videos from now on, though it doesn't give me the menu burned by the LG as DVD Player does. However, that's perhaps a small price to pay.

  • Adobe camera raw window won't resize and can't reach buttons

When I open an image from bridge into adobe camera raw 6.1 (Photoshop CS5) on my laptop, the camera raw window fills all of the screen (top to bottom) and the buttons at the bottom of the window are below the task bar. Thus I can't open the image in photoshop except by hitting the enter key. I can't reach the open, etc buttons. The window won't resize and there are no icon/buttons in the right upper corner to go to/from full screen. When I hit the icon in the top right hand menu bar in ACR (to go to full screen size) the window then fills the whole width of the screen in addition to the height, but no matter what I do I can't get the height of the window to shrink, so that I can access the icons at the bottom of the screen. What am I missing? Thanks

Don't worry about turning aero off just yet.
There are two key first questions:
What is your screen resolution (width in pixels x height in pixels)?  Right-click on desktop, choose Screen Resolution.
What setting have you chosen for the display size (Smaller, Medium, Larger) in the Display dialog?  Right-click on desktop, choose Personalize, then Display.

  • GarageBand window won't resize

Garage Band window won't resize...I can see the bottom but not the top..if I do anything to it, I lose the bottom completely and have to start from scratch.

something quick to try; assuming you are already at your highest resolution, toggle it to a lower rez and then back to the higher rez.

  • Applescripting to resize DVD Player window.

I have a malfunctioning DVD player game that won't display the subtitles correctly unless they are forced to be redrawn. The simplest way to do this is to resize the window slightly. Obviously since that's a pain to do constantly manually I tried to script this with a simple repeat. My script works fine for TextEdit or FireFox but I get an error full of garbley-gook when I run it on DVD Player:
    tell application "DVD Player"
    set bounds of front window to {0, 0, 1320, 1047}
    delay 0.5
    set bounds of front window to {0, 0, 1325, 1051}
    end tell
error "DVD Player got an error: UNîp¢$8Ôˇøcepscahp (the forum is editing most of the error out) number -1731
    Any ideas?

  • Apple DVD Player installers won't recognize Lacie d2 16x4x12x

    Greetings :
My eMac has a CDR internal drive only.
I just upgraded to Panther (upgrade disks) and I'm running 10.3.9.
I'm trying to get the Apple installers to recognize the Lacie d2 I just got, so that I can install the Apple DVD player (software update?) or import a DVD player from another machine.
The software won't install because it says it can't detect a proper drive, and the player I imported won't open for the same reason. I tried using Patchburn, Pacifist and the installed Installer on my eMac to no avail.
    Here's what my system profiler says about the d2 : : :
    FireWire Bus:
    Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
    LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0:
    Manufacturer: LaCie Group SA
    Model: > LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
    Unit Spec Id: 24734
    Unit Software Version: 10483
    Firmware Revision: 2.07
I believe the Lacie d2 I just got is the previous generation,
no lightscribe. It works great (plug an play) for burning data but I'd really like to use the native Apple DVD player to watch DVD video with the drive. I downloaded the free/open source VLC media player and it seems to work well enough,
but I'm on a mission to use Apple software if possible.
I'm also thinking of upgrading to Tiger soon so I'm wondering if I'll have any corresponding issues there.
Oh, and I did download and install the latest driver was from the Lacie site.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BTW: here is the fix in case anyone needs it
Follow it exactly, it works !
    1. Download and install Pacifist.
    2. Insert Mac OS 10.3 CD in drive.
    3. Select Open Mac OS X Install Packages button in Pacifist. It will ask you to swap out all three 10.3 install disks.
    4. Click the Find button and type "DVD". A long list should show up.
    5. The important files/folders to replace are:
    -AppleAltiVecDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRadeon8500DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
    -ATIRadeonDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRage128DVDDriver.bundle (if graphics card is installed)
    -DVDPlayback.framework
    -DVD.framework
    -rtadvd
**There are many duplicates of the files/folders above in other languages. I only chose to install English.
    6. Select each or all and click Install.
    7. Choose to replace all existing files.
    8. Restart. Repair permissions.
I didn't bother to try to install only the English versions...just installed and replaced all the items on tha list

  • ONLY SMALL IMAGE - in OS DVD PLAYER WINDOW

    Hi
WHEN I USE THE OS dvd player sometimes it only is playing the
dvd back as a small window with a big black boarder .
If i check this by playing the dvd on my stand-alone dvd player/tv this does not happen.
Could someone explain how i can change this re- occuring situation when playing dvds on my mac, so i can watch the film at full window pane size ?
    Thanks for your time.

    didier:
I don't do much with DVDs on my mac, however I just popped one in and played with the controls. I find that Command + 3 gives a large image. Command + 0 toggles between full screen and smaller screen (as in View menu.
Failing that my next guess will be to try the Preferences. Go to Home > Library > Preferences. Locate com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist and drag it to the desktop for now. Restart your computer. It will create a new preference file. Try your DVD and see how it works. If it is OK, go ahead and trash the preference on the desktop.
    Post back with your progress.
    Good luck.

  • DVD Player app won't work with Snow Leopard

I installed Snow Leopard recently. I tried to watch a DVD with DVD player. It wouldn't work. I got this message in a box: "You can't use this version of the application DVD Player with this version of Mac OS X. You have DVD Player 5.0.3."
I looked for a recent DVD player update/download and could not find one. Same with Snow Leopard updates...
Does anybody know the fix or the workaround?
    Thanks,
    Estel Dillon

    HI,
Download and install the 10.6.2 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
    Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
In the future, when updating system software, click the Apple Menu  /Software Updates. If that doesnt't work then go here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and use the standalone installers.
*The DVD Player application is not available to reintall from the SL disc*. If after the suggestions above haven't helped, then back up your important data before you do anything, then reinstall Snow Leopard.
You can reinstall the following apps from your SL disc.
    Address Book
    iCal
    iChat
    iTunes
    Mail
    Oxford Dictionaries
    Safari

  • Flash Player Update won't run properly on my Windows Vista / IE 9

I am having problems with updating the Adobe Flash Player. The player is installed and recognizes that an update is available. I select to download and install the update and an internet explorer window opens and I am given the opportunity to click the "Download Now" button. However once i do the screen changes for a while to a progress bar titled "Step 1 of 3" and "Initializing" which then changes to "Step 2 of 3" that shows "If you encounter any issues downloading Adobe Flash Player, Click here." but never does anything else. When I take advantage of the 'click here' option or the "Need Help?" prompt in the upper right corner I get another screen overlay showing the following. The problem is I am not getting any of the prompts shown below. It is as if the download never started. And no the prompts shown below are not really apearing and just hiding behind another open window on my screen. It seems to me that the update and download functions are broken. The same thing happens if i go directly to the ADOBE site and try to initiate the install or updates directly from there. Can someone help with this?
    1.
When File Download dialog box appears, click Run.  Security scan will run automatically.
    2.
When User Account Control dialog box appears, click Yes.
Note : If you are still unable to download Adobe Flash Player, click the Back button on your browser. Then click Install/Download now and select the option to  Save and Run.

    Hi jwklingon,
Thanks for confirming the behaviour, much appreciated.  The online installer that you were using (aih in the file name) downloads the Flash Player installer silently in the background and installs it silently.  It appears that, for some reason, the download was not occurring.  The link Andy provided has the offline installers, which are the full installers and don't download anything in the background.  Those should work on your system.  If it doesn't, please provide a screenshot of the error the displays, if any.
    Thank you.

  • Trim Edit window won't resize

    This is odd.
When I double click an edit point to open the trim edit window, it opens up about 50% smaller than it should to cover the viewer and canvas. Even more strange, it won't let me resize the trim edit window. I go to the corner and try to pull it around, but it won't move.
    Any ideas?

  • DVD SP 2 won't open properly then unexpectedly quits

DVD SP2 usually opens with a screen asking to create a new project, open existing, etc. that isn't happening anymore. it opens with the log and assets windows. i manually open the menu editor. import an asset. sometimes i can try to bring it into the menu editor and i get no choice buttons. most of the time when i import an asset it shuts down and says dvd sp2 has unexpectedly quit. it worked fine before quicktime 7.0.4. i have dvd sp2.0.5, quicktime 7.0.4. i have reinstalled sp2, repaired permissions, trashed plist, trashed quicktime receipts and redownloaded and reinstalled quicktime 7.0.4. nothing changes. another curious thing is i can't open preferences in the toolbar of sp2.
    please help! i am desparate.

I'm not sure this is applicable to DVDSP 2, but it's worth a try:

If that doesn't work, you may be looking at a reinstall of DVDSP and/or your OS.

  • Finder window won't resize after switching spaces

I've got my mbp set up with 12 spaces and designate apps to particular spaces.
When I open a new finder window in space 2, I can move it and resize it no problem.
If I then switch to another space and then switch back to space 2, I can't resize the finder window. I can still move it, but just can't resize it.
Does anyone know a way around this bug?
    Thanks!

I can also confirm this bug.  Finder windows seem to "forget" where they are on the screen.  This is very clear when renaming a file: the highlighted, editable filename text shows up some seemingly random distance from the filename displayed in the Finder window.
This can also be seen when using Quick Look.  The file zooms to the full Quick Look preview not from the file icon, but from some random point on the screen.
Same goes for dragging and dropping.  For example, if you want to drag a file into an existing folder, you have to hover some distance from the actual folder, the same distance you see when you rename a file or use Quick Look.  The Finder window doesn't know its position on the screen after using Spaces or Expose.

  • My quicktime player window won't open

I'm running 10.3.9 on an early G-5. I've recently updated to the 7.2 version of quicktime. I click on the player icon and get no window. When I try to import a movie from the file menu, i get a prompt that says it can't open that movie. I've reinstalled Quicktime and I've used the disc utility to check the hard drive.
I now can't open my Peak program because it says it can't initialize quicktime. I need that program.
    Will someone please help me.
    Thanks

Thank you, thank you. It worked. I now have a working version of quicktime.
I'm a little hesitant of upgrading from 6.5 cause it's working now.
But now I've got another problem. Safari is not working. I had to go to explorer to thank you. I can't get a window when I click on safari. And the pull down menu works sporadically. Maybe you have a suggestion for this problem.
    I would appreciate any help.
