Dvd Player Won't Play Copies Of Or Self-Made DVDS

Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz with 10.5.5, and DVD player 5.0.1. Dvd player will play commercial dvds, but not any that I or anyone else has made. The same ones will play in my Mac Pro with the same settings. I tried many, but the common denominator is that it will not play anything but commercial DVD's, when other computers and players will play the same disc. Wanted to check here before updating to 10.5.7. Any help is appreciated.

I have been able to
1. burn data and movie DVDs and CDs
3. read CDs and DVDs rented from Netflix or Blockbuster, purchased DVDs,
4. and read DVDs burned by a 2007 Quad G5 running the same OS!
But the DVDs I burn with the drive DO NOT WORK in the same drive. The DVDs I burn DO work on a different a 1999 mac laptop. And on a 2007 Quad G5. The drive can read discs burned by the Quad G5.
Also, when the DVD I burn finishes, and I'm prompted to "Mount" or "Eject" the finished disc, if I mount the disc, it works. It plays. The drive reads the disc. And if I choose "Eject" - if I re-insert the disc, the computer cannot read it and spits it out.
Why should it be able to burn but not read the discs it burns??

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • HD DVD player won't play HD DVDs (DV6700t)

Hello all, I need the updated firmware or something for this hd dvd player. It will read normal DVDs, but will not play or recognize HD DVDs.

And yes, this is an actual HD DVD Toshiba drive, so it should be playing them.

  • My iMac DVD player won't play.

Ok, my DVD & CD player seems to have no issues or problems with playing my CD's. However the issue is it will not play any DVD! New or old, it doesn't matter. At first I thought it was because it was scratched but that's not the reason. Someone suggested to buy the seperate dvd player, but that misses the point. I bought my iMac to be able to play DVD's. Now someone else says the internal reader isn't working, but if that's the case why would it be reading my CD's & other program discs? I googled the internet & attempted so far 3 different ways to get it to work, none of which did anything. I don't feel it right that I'd have to pay $100+ some dollars to fix some DVD disc reader inside. By the way I already tried a DVD player "cleaner" which didn't do anything. Ideas, suggestions & Help Wanted! Thanks

There are different lenses used to read CDs and DVDs.
The lens for the DVD reading/writing part of your drive is probably damaged or stopped working in some fashion.
Bottom line, your optical will no longer play DVDs. and it is not worth the cost to replace it.
While some long time contributors will tell you otherwise, the optical drives in older iMacs are not a very good quality drive and they are the first internal hardware, inside these aluminum model iMacs, commonly prone to early failure do to heat, dust getting inside and their vertical mounted orientation inside the iMac.
Optical drives, especially the slot loading types in iMacs do not like being used in the vertical orientation to read and write discs.
The bottom line is that it is cheaper and easier just to connect up an external optical disc drive.
There are cheap ones (under$50) that'll last anywhere from a year to three years or more expensive(over $50 and higher) that will last much longer.
Not all optical drives are Mac compatible.
Most Mac compatible drives you will only find to be purchased online.
Here are two on Amazon.com that are cheap and Mac compatible

  • Burned DVD but won't play on Apple or two other DVD players

My kids scratch up original movie DVDs so thought I would make a copy that they could use and keep the original pristine. Copied audio and video folders from movie DVD onto harddrive. New Memorex DVD-RW into Apple and dragged audio and video folders from harddrive into the blank Memorex DVD in Finder. Went to File and Burn Disc and disc burned and when finished DVD Player opened. No movie spontaneously played. Could not play movie or fast forward or rewind or even eject disc from DVD controls. DVD placed in separate DVD Player and comment saying Disc Error. DVD in another DVD player, player kept trying to load DVD and finally said No Disc. How do I correct this problem? Using iDVD 4. Burned at maximum (2X).

    hi Darrell:
My kids scratch up original movie DVDs
Should that really say My kids scratch up original commercial movie DVDs?
If that is true then you cannot copy your movie to the DVD the way you stated and as a matter of fact that is because it is protected by law.

  • DVD  player doesn't play movies with .avi extension

My friend recently gave me dvds that had movies burnt off the net. They're all files with .avi extensions. When i tried to open the file, it said i needed a higher version of quick time player, which i downloaded off the apple site.
After all this, i still can't play my dvd. What's happening here? The drive also makes these weird noises, like there's something seriously going wrong with the dvd. I tried playing it through dvd player on my mac book pro, but i couldn't open any file on it. It keeps sayin " NOT PERMITTED" . Funny part is, my friend could easily watch all these movies on his windows xp computer...
    Please helppp !!!

I think it is unforgivable a DVD player won't play DVD's that are not actually DVD's at all but data disks. I am still mad my DVD player will not paint my house.
Windows uses the one size fits all WM Player and it plays DVD and data disks or files etc.
Use Quicktime and Perian (free) to play those pesky files either from the DVD or from a drag and drop to the desktop first.

  • DVD Movies won't play after 10.4.10 / DVD Player 4.6.1 Updates...

CDs will boot fine, blank DVDs will mount fine, but when I insert a DVD movie; the drive won't mount and the DVD player will not play my discs. I currently have a Pioneer DVR-109 installed in my PowerPC G5. Any information or help please.

    SOME GOOD NEWS!
IT DEFINITELY IS A TIGER ISSUE... here's a little workaround... although in a tricky way, i got my commercial dvd's to finally play. do the following and let me know if it will work for you as well.
    -insert a movie dvd (commercial)
-when told that the disc is not readable and prompted to eject or ignore hit ignore
-you will not see the disc mount on your desktop
-open vlc and hit play. choose "disc" for destination and hit okay (don't try with apple's dvd player, IT WILL NOT WORK)
-you will now see the movie title in your playlist, select it and play it... it works!!
good luck and until we find a permanent fix we can still watch movies on our macs! BTW, i used vlc 0.8.6c for this test on 10.4.10. incase you're not familiar with vlc, it's a free video player and you can download it from number of places on the internet.

  • DVD videos won't play, although audio works?

since upgrading to 10.8.4, DVD videos, including rental movies, discussions from teaching sessions, and conversions from home movies won't play, although sound is audible. Video player is "App version 5500.38.2; Framework version 5.7.1. I have rarely used DVDs on the machinge, but did work fine in past. Any suggestions appreciated

What comes to mind is that the DVD player will only work with certain original Apple manufactured DVD drives.  (Licensing issue since Apple pays a license fee for the MPEG software on the DVD drive.)  Are you using the original built-in drive?  VLC doesn't care about the license but states that it is up to the user to insure proper licensing.  Look in About This Mac to see what information it has about the DVD drive.  Perhaps it is somehow sending the wrong information.
Can you view MPEG movies on the Apple site.  For example the movie trailers.

    Hi,
Download Imgburn and check your optical drive capabilities.  See the below image.
Check under Read and make sure that your opitcal drive has BD read capabilities.
Download the Cyberlink BD Advisor and use it to check to make sure your system passes for BD play.

  • DVD player doesn't play some DVDs

I've had my macbookpro for several months now. I've been mostly satisfied, but the DVD player seems to be messed up. I have never had a problem with software or CDs, but every once in a while, the DVD player will not play movies. Most of the time, these are Netflix movies which, understandably for shared discs, sometimes have blemishes. However, these same discs have no problems playing on my cheap dvd player hooked up to the tv. I've taken it into the mac store, but they told me nothing is wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to upgrade or change the dvd player? Thanks.

    First, welcome to the discussions.
This issue is not a suprise because of the Optical drives and the Fimware that Apple uses in there computers.
Apple has much higher standards for there Optical Drives, and therefore they are very very picky about the Media that they will accept and burn and read.
My quess is that the Movies you are getting are either scratched or smudged and they will either eject from your Mac or will render you an error message.
On some occasions there will be a problem with Optical Drives. If you can read and write with New Good Media, and you are able to use the DVD Player with New Commercial DVD Movies then this tells me it is the Netflix DVD's are of poor quality.

  • Burned dvd-r won't play in external players

I just upgraded from an iMac G5 to a Power Mac. I was using DVDSP on my iMac and never had any problems burning. I recently burned a small project from DVDSP onto the same exact DVD-R media that I've always used (Memorex) and went to play it on the same exact external DVD player that I've always used (Toshiba), and the DVD wouldn't play. I also tested it out on my friend's sony dvd player, and it also wouldn't play. It plays fine on my computer. I used the same exact settings that I did on my iMac (field order:bottom; two pass VBR; max bit rate of 8.2; "Best"). Out of curiosity, I also tried burning a dvd from iDVD, and that also wouldn't play on the external players. I then tried burning an audio CD from iTunes (again, using the same exact settings and same exact media and external CD player), and the CD wouldn't play, except on my computer. I even tried burning the CD at a lower speed (8x), but that made no difference.
I took it into the Apple store, and they replaced the optical drive. However, as I suspected, that did not solve the problem at all. So here I am having just "upgraded" to a Power Mac from a perfectly good iMac, and I have lost all functionality of these programs. I believe it is an issue with Tiger, since I did not have Tiger on my iMac. I did download the Pro Application Support 3.0 when I first got the power mac, which I thought was supposed to solve problems that people were having under Tiger.
I have also read people's entries here which suggest using Toast to burn with. Honestly, I don't see that as a solution, unless Apple starts including it with their systems. These programs (DVDSP, iDVD, iTunes) all have their own burn functions which are supposed to work. And they did work on my iMac, without fail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I used the same exact settings that I did on my iMac (field order:bottom; two pass VBR; max bit rate of 8.2; "Best").
It sounds like you have some other issues going on since nothing is working properly it sounds like, usually first thing to check is that bit Rate which is high, but it sounds like nothing is working
Have you tried reparining permissions after the updates? Have you tried making a new user/account and see if that works? Which version of Tiger? Is this a new Power Mac or an older one (in other words is somehow the burner not rated for the media you are using? That one is a stretch....) How about RAM, any after market RAM (like buy a Mac get 512 Meg upgrade) sometimes that RAM is buggy and can cause issues, though never heard of this happening

  • IMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also play fine in Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • Flash player won't play on home pages

My flash player won't play on my browser's home pages.  My OS is : windows 7 64 bit ultimate and my browsers are :  Mozilla,Chrome, and IE.  I have owned this machine since laborday 2012 and all of them worked in the begining.  This has been going on for a couple of weeks and I would like to resolve it.  Video works normally in places such as youtube, but will not run on the browsers home pages.  The strange part of it is that it will run the advertisements, but after that is done it will just set there with the loading icon going for awhile until a message come on that states that the stream could not be found.  I just got done checking each browser to see if the players are up to date and they all where current..  Don't know what else to try.  Any suggestions ?  Thanks
