DVD players won't recognize my DVD

I recently made a DVD slide show and both on my son's portable DVD player and my own fixed DVD player, the DVD continued to "load" as an endless loop and could never be played. I have a new IMac with IDVD 6.0.3. I have made movies (with the new computer and current applications) and burned them to a DVD and nobody in the family had trouble playing them. I use HP DVD-R 16X and I burn at maximum speed. What am I missing? thanks, Dr.Steve

I use HP DVD-R 16X and I burn at maximum speed. What am I missing?
High speed burns tend to result in more burn-errors which result in problems playing the DVDs in set top DVD players (usually such discs will play in computers, because computers have more error correction than set top DVD players).
iDVD doesn't give you burn speed options.
The only way (other than finding low-speed media) to keep the burn speed at 4x or less, is to make your DVDs in two steps: Step One Create a disk image of your completed project (it's an option under File) and Step Two Use Apple's Disk Utility application to burn the image to writable media. DU will give you burn speed options.

  • Media Players won't Recognize 5 gig Micro after firmware upd

I received my 5 gig Creative Zen Micro two years ago for Christmas and I haven't been able to listen to it with headphones for about a year.
When I first discovered that the head phone input was un-soldered I was very upset and pretty sure I'd never be able to listen to it ever again but then I figured out I could connect my zen to my computer and play songs from it via mediasource or realplayer.
After I updated the firmware for my micro mediasource wouldn't recognize it and windows says it's an MTP player (before it was labeled as a usb device).
I downloaded a some kind of plug in that was suppose to fix the problem but it didn't.
Where do I go from here?
Also does any one know of a place in the Greenville South Carolina area that could fix the head phone input?

Have you updated all your Zen Micro's software? You could use Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2(52.2 MB) or Creative Zen Micro Media Explorer Web Update(48.24 MB)
Also check out this thread, ZenMaster333 has helped a lot of people with headphone jack problems.

  • DVD Burner won't recognize discs

I recently installed an lg gsa-4166b dual layer dvd burner to my emac and for some reason it won't recognize cds or dvds. Whenever I try to burn anything and put in a blank disc I get the message "no disk inserted". I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.11 and even installed the PatchBurn utility, but still no luck. Can someone help me?

Oh really? Now that is interesting, because in fact I also have a Western Digital MyBook Pro external HD. Actually 2. They worked fine until the last month or so, and one of them had a bad disc so I had to have it replaced on warranty. Now the other one is acting strange -- won't mount. WD had me upgrade the firmware and reinstall the latest drivers. But it's still not acting right.
And you are also correct about the disc playing. Normal DVD's, CD's and CD-ROMs play fine. It's just blank CD-R's etc that come up as "unreadable."
I bought these two WD MyBook Pro 1 TB drives on 10/20/2007 however, and I don't recall that I had a disc burning problem that long ago. Maybe it's been that long since I burned a disc? I'm not sure...
Incidentally I've had another problem for a really long time, which is a very long Mac OS startup. I am not sure when it started but it might have been about the time I bought these drives and installed the software. See threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1765645&tstart=0
    and

Yesterday two things happened. One, Apple sent through another automatic update requiring a reboot, but I didn't catch what it was. Two, WD had me upgrade the drive firmware and software drivers. Suddenly my bootup problem has gone away. So the question is, was it Apple's update or WD's firmware upgrade?
And lo and behold, I just entered one of the same blank Fujifilm CD-R discs and it mounts without a problem. I can now burn discs again. I have a feeling the WD firmware upgrade fixed a lot.
Yeesh! I think I shall be buying drives from someone else in the future.
Thanks for this very insightful tip.

  • G4 DVD drive won't recognize OS 10.4 upgrade disc

I have a a PowerMac G4 (AGP graphics) with a CPU type PowerPC G4 (2.9). I have a upgrade disc for OS 10.4. When I load it into my Quantam Fireballlp LM27.3 DVD drive, the drive won't recognize the disc. It attempts to read it and then ejects it. I have an external USB 2.0 DVD RW burner plugged into a USB 1.0 port, and it recognizes the disc, but I can't select it as the startup disc.
How do I get my system to read the upgrade disc so I can upgrade to OS 10.4? I've run a lens cleaner several times with no change.
    Thanks!

    Hi-
Well, if you know someone who has a Mac, or, if you have another machine, try the disc in another machine. There is a possibility that the disc itself is bad. I would consider this a strong possibility, since the drive recognizes other DVD's, and the Panther install disc.
If the disc tests good in another machine, then you will need to consider replacing the drive for a newer model. A new combo drive is only about $30-$40. The Pioneer DVR-112 would be a good consideration.

As for the "helpful" not working, there seems to be a problem within the system (known by the hosts, yet allowed to continue....). For now, I will gladly accept your thanks! (and, you're welcome!)

  • My cd/dvd drive won't recognize my cd pavillion dv4

Every time I put a CD or DVD into my CD/DVD drive, it won't recognize it. It "thinks" for about a minute and then stops. Sometimes if I open and close it will work but not always. I have a Pavillion dv4 with windows 7 that I bought in November 2009 (but my entire hard drive was replaced in May 2011)

  • Windows 7 Professional XP Mode won't recognize internal DVD or external USB drives

Windows 7 Professional XP Mode - won't recognize USB external drives or internal DVD drive
I recently purchased a new Toshiba laptop and ordered configured with Windows 7 Professional so I could use XP mode for some older programs.  The Virtual Mode and XP mode work ok, but the computer will not
recognize any external USB storage drives or the internal DVD drive.  This prevents me from saving and transferring any file that I work on in XP mode.
,I also tried to copy and paste the file from XP Mode over to a document file to 7 Professional Mode, but it won't allow that.  It also will not recognize any printer when in XP Mode,
so I can't print out the file either.
Basically, I have no way to store or move a file out of the computer when in XP Mode.
Does anyone know what I need to do so that the computer will recognize the USB drives and internal DVD drive when I am running in XP mode?

  • IDVD selectively won't recognize .mp4 format - how to burn for dvd player?

    Hi -
I'm trying to burn a .mp4 movie for my gf's family so they can watch it on their TV instead of my tiny comp. After trying DiskUtility and iTunes (both to no avail, DU wouldn't even allow me to select a .mp4 format to burn on the DVD; iTunes burnt the movie, but it doesn't play on the DVD player ...). I thought I'd try iDVD, but it won't recognize the movie I'd like to burn - says the format is unrecognized. Tried with another movie, same format (.mp4) and it worked just fine.
I'm really at a loss - I didn't expect it would be so difficult to burn a DVD! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

Alright, my results correspond with Russ' hypothesis: both videos I tried are in the same format & at the same FPS, the only difference b/w them is the audio. The one that worked is Stereo (L R), the one that does not is the 5.1.
Unfortunately, I do not have Quick Time Pro, I just have QTP 10.1 that came w/ Lion (& an older version that I added b/c it allows playback speed control). Here, the export options are:
    480p
    720p
    iPod touch & iPhone 3GS
iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV
    Audio only
None of these were an obvious choice to me, any suggestions? I've heard something about "Toast", would this be an easier / better option?
Thank you for on-going help. Very much appreicated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

  • Players won't play DVD

I've seen this problem discussed a little in this forum, but hope to get some more ideas. I made a DVD containing a manual-advance slideshow with about 20 TIFF files in iDVD that plays fine in the Mac DVD Player. But it won't play in either of our two DVD players -- an old GE model and a brand-new Panasonic model. The old one just says, "This disk cannot be played." The new one shows the opening screen with the "thumbnail" of the first slide, but when you try to advance it, the player says the disk can't be played.
I found one post that said manual-advance may not work, but I haven't wasted another DVD yet to try auto advance.
    Any ideas would be welcome.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1 Ghz G4, 512MB RAM

Have you tried all the buttons on the DVD player remote?
Manual advance slides are actually chapters.
That said, it's been my experience that some DVD players won't advance the slides.
Auto advance should be OK for you.

  • Mac won't recognize my Sony DRX-830UL-T DVD burner

    Hi,
I have successfully used this burner in the past, but for some reason now my computer won't recognize the existence of my burner. When I go to Toast and attempt to burn movies, it only recognizes the DVD machine that comes with the computer, which does not burn DVDs. I believe I have it connected right. It's plugged in, and on. the top cord is connected. Please any help you could provide would be great. Something always seems to go wrong when I try to make a home movie! Thanks!

That's a High Definition camcorder with CMOS not CCD chip so it's recording at 1080i I believe ...
It has an s-videdo output and others have had success with iMovie etc. using that feed.

  • OS X 10.6.8 was playing DVD now won't recognize store bought discs.  Normal Discs no HD and the same discs work on imac.  Any thoughts?  Is there a patch or a way to reload possibly or a system utility that I can run?  Thanks anyone

I don't know what changed but it just won't recognize a disc any more.  The DVD player itself seems to open up, but the disc just spins in the case and after 20 seconds it spit it back out like nothing ever happened.  The same disc plays fine on the imac.

  • Circle with slash/won't recognize DVD or external drives

    I have this model:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.26 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB

      Hardware UUID:          134FD99D-DF06-5912-A8B9-255280C48DCC
It often fails to boot with the circle with slash. Tried safe boot (works), tried booting from optical drive with original system disc (won't recognize or eject-tried all of the eject techniques), and ran disk repair in target mode (found nothig wrong). Can't run hardware check for obvious reasons. It does not see external drives connected to FW or USB ports.I am starting to suspect a bad logic board. Any thoughts?

I can no longer startup from a CD/DVD
Be sure you're inserting the DVD that came with your Mac Pro. If you are trying to boot from other optical media be sure it is compatible with Intel Macs and specifically the Mac Pro. You are probably trying to boot off a discs that does not have a suitable OS on it.
or my external FW drive which has 10.4.8 also installed on it (pre-intel)
Same goes here. Your FireWire drive does not have a suitable OS installed in it. You need to install an Intel version of Mac OS X. Additionally you will probably need to repartition your drive using the GUID Partition Table. Until you do both of these Startup Disk will not let you select it.

  • IMac G5 won't recognize firewire DVD burner

Hello, all! I just purchased a LaCie+/-RW DVD drive (FA Porsche design) with firewire. From my first attempt to hook it up, my computer won't recognize the device. System profiler shows the firewire ports listed (400 speed) but the DVD drive doesn't show up either in profiler or on the desktop. I have tried: 1.) Resetting PRAM. 2.) Resetting SMU. 3.) "Resetting" the firewire ports in the same way that others have been advised to do in this discussion thread. 4.) Switching the firewire cable to the other firewire port. Yesterday I took the DVD drive to another Mac (G4 Tower) and it worked beautifully, so I'm certain that the cable, brick, and the drive itself are fine. Any ideas? What would be my next step to take so that I can burn on DVDs?
Also, if I picked up a firewire to USB cable/adapter, would that do an adequate job of transferring the data or would I be wasting my money?
Thank you in advance for your helpful suggestions,
    Boring Teacher

Good morning, DP! I've never hooked up any firewire devices to this machine before, so I can't be sure that the ports have ever worked! If by "optical drive" you mean the mac's CD drive, it's built in. I have three external USB ports, two of which are taken up by the keyboard and mouse. The other USB port has worked fine for swapping in the occasional camera or iPod.
Thanks for the interest, I'll wait awhile before I take it in to a service desk!

  • Bootcamp won't recognize Win7 dvd

I have a late 2008 aluminum body Macbook (5,1), running OS X 10.7.4 and Bootcamp 4.0.3. I replaced the 160 GB Toshiba HDD with a Crucial M4 SSD and boot off that. The problem I'm having is that even though it allows me to create the partition, it won't recognize neither the 32-bit DVD I purchased nor the 64-bit DVD of Windows 7 Professional. I'm sure everything is up to date, so I'm not sure what the problem is. It'll just try to read it for a few minutes then spit the DVD out. Also, the download of the Windows support software seems to be taking forever. Any help? Thanks in advance!

If you can't even make the partition then something else is wrong. Even without a DVD in the drive Boot Camp should still create the Windows partition. That is done before it even looks for a Windows install DVD.

  • I'm trying to burn photos onto a CD from Finder, but my iMac won't recognize either a CD-R or a DVD-R.

I'm trying to burn photos onto a CD from Finder, but my iMac won't recognize either a CD-R or a DVD-R.  Any clues?  Nothing shows up in Finder as far as a Device, and I have a message telling me to "Insert a blank disc to begin" and that I will need a disc with at least "47.6 MB"--it's only 18 photos, and I need to burn them for a parent of a student (I'm a teacher).  I have tried several different discs, so it's not the actual CD or DVD.

Create a new folder. Place the photos in that.
From the Finder File menu choose New Burn Folder. That will appear on your desktop. Place the folder of photos  you created into that.
Now open Disk Utility and you will see that Burn Folder listed. Choose Burn from the menu.

  • Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.
