DVD Playing Problems

Lately, I've been having problems occasionally playing dvds on my Powerbook G4 laptop. Usually I put in a dvd and eventually the DVD Player opens up and the movie loads up. But lately i put in a dvd and nothing opens up. If I open DVD Player myself a message says "Disc Not Available or Supportable." But yet the same dvd has worked in the past. What can I do to get this dvd to play if this happens?
thanks in advance!
-chris.

Might try one of those cleaning Disks, it's been the savior for a few, and a waste of money for others.
Also Using Disk Utility to Verify the HD & Repair Permissions, then reboot may help.
Or, mysel, I'd use Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Dvd playing problem

I made a dvd with many menus and movies. On one of the menus I have a "play all" button that doesnt seem to work on a computer dvd player. the rest of the dvd plays fine but when it gets to this movie, you can hear the disc spinning but it freezes up. The wierd thing is that it works fine in a regular dvd player.
    any thoughts?

I am on a g5 with a stock dvd player.
I tried to re-import the the movie that wouldnt play.... and it worked. however now a different one doesnt work. So I keep re-importing them and a different one doesnt work. So I am just burning through DVDs and brain cells trying to figure this out.
I'm thinking about trying to remake the whole project but that is something I REALLY dont want to do.

  • Mpeg dvd playing problem

I have just had some camcorder video tranferred to dvd by a professional company. When I try to play the dvd's my iMac doesn't recognise the dvd even exists. The presence of the dvd does.'t show up in Finder so I can't drag it in to such a program as VLC, which has been suggested. I am now informed that the dvd'd are in mpeg form and need some plug-in to allow me to play them. Any advice on how to overcome this problem would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks

    'All type of MPEG File.'
    Hardly a proper desciption!
Contact the company and ascertain exactly what they have made.

  • DR4-A dvd play problems

    Hello all
I was hoping you could help with a problem i have with the above. When i try to play a disk it starts to read and then locks the system up so you have to reboot.
It had been working fine with Nero 6 ultra using showtime as a player but now i can't play a thing. I did upgrade firmware to 2.60 and im wondering if it might be that.
    Any clues?
MY system is as follows; p4 2.80c, Asus p4800 MB, 512k PC3200 DDr400, SATA 120Gig Hdd. DMA is on.
Also has anyone got 2.50 on an .exe as i can't seem to crack how to flash in dos!
    Cheers

Firmware version 2.50 is not good, get rid of it, it does not support some writing modes and may cause some problems with software compatibility (CloneCD). Get 2.60 which is OK.
My general suggestions (maybe some of it may help):
    1) Uninstall the drive and reboot, so Windows identify the drive and install its native drives again.
    2) Connect MSI drive as Master on different channel (system is on Primary channel, try to connect MSI drive as Secondary Master), check proper cabling and jumpers settings.
    3) Does your power supply has enough power for your PC? (You can check the required power at http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/).

  • DVD play -  problem.

    Hi anyone,
I am exporting my Final Cut projects to Quicktime and then burning them using iDVD.
I am often finding that the receivers of the DVD copies are not able to play the discs even though they play OK on my computer and home DVD player. The most recent disc was to be played by a government minister in parliament. I can't believe that the government's digital equipment can be that old, so how can I be sure that I am making the most compatible disc for most machines? Is there a more reliable programme to use for copying?
    Thanks for any help.Martin

    Hi
    In short
    • I use Verbatim disks
    • I use DVD-R
    • I set burn-speed down to x1 in iDVD08 or09
(Or make a DiskImage and burn this with Disk Util tool or Roxio Toast™
    still burn-speed set to x1)
    • Minimum free space on internal boot hard disk 25Gb (never less)
or read long collection of thoughts
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • DVD plays well on some machines, gets stuck on others

Made a 20-minute DVD, having done all my editing, etc. in iMovie and exported to iDVD5. Once burned, tested it on my iMac and it worked fine. Also worked fine in a friend's stand-alone DVD player.
But some users since have this problem: the DVD plays well for a few minutes, but gets "stuck" after a while, and ultimately freezes. And it's not the same "stuck" point for each user (if that was the case, I would think the physical disk had a problem.) It's different points for different people that it seems to get "stuck" and freezes.
In one case, user took "stuck" disk out of stand-alone DVD player and watched it in their laptop (PC) and all went well.
Any hints as to why the DVD is getting stuck on some DVD players?
    iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4
      Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Probably a "bad" burn, the result of a DVD-R that some players don't like.
    Try these things:
    1) another brand of DVD-R (I Like Verbatim)
    2) Burn at a slower speed. To do this with iDVD you have to "save as disk image" and then burn the image with Disk Utility (DU) or Toast. For some reason, I can't always choose slower burning speeds with DU, not sure why.

  • My DVD plays on my Mac and new BluRay player, but not on my TV

I burned a DVD with three mp4 movies. The movies play fine in QuickTime, and the DVD plays without a problem on my Mac. It also plays correctly on a newer BluRay player. However, when I try to play the DVD on an older DVD player (about 3 years old), I have problems. The DVD starts OK, and I can navigate the menu choices. However, I find that after about a minute, the player simply freezes, and I can't play or change anything. I tried burning a new DVD with a different format, but the same thing happened. I think the problem might just be that my DVD player is too old, but I wondered if there is a setting in iDVD to be compatible with older players. Any help would be appreciated!

I tried burning a new DVD with a different format
I'm not sure you mean because ALL video DVDs are in multiplexed MPG-2 format.
I suspect your set-top DVD player doesn't 'like' writable' media (it used to be fairly common). You might try using a DVD cleaning disc in case there is any dust over the player optical system.

  • DVD Player Problems

My DVD player seems to skip on brand new DVD's. It freezes for a few seconds, then move forward for a second, then freezes again. Also, sometimes I get "Error -96682", but sometimes I don't. It also has the tendency to "skip damaged areas", even on new DVD's.

After innstalling Snow Leopard, DVD player does not work with any of my DVDs and the symptoms you describe about the drive spinning and jumping is excactly what seems to be going on. I first noticed it a little time after innstalling Snow Leopard and I am wondering if these problems started for me after I innstalled the 10.6.1 update. It seems we have the same machine from 2206, so maybe there is a problem with Snow Leopards driver routines for the combo drive in the 2006 MacBooks?
VLC does not work either, but the DVDs play fine on VLC on Windows XP at work. I don't have a TV, so all my DVDs are useless now...

  • Leopard DVD player problems

every time I launch the DVD player program it crashes instantly i've tried to restart cause I thought it might need a restart but it still does even after the restart.

I too am having DVD Player problems, though certainly not that consistently. About 1 in 10 times I start up DVD Player it will immediately dim the screen and display in front the multilingual "you must restart your computer" message. Never happened with Tiger, but that was also a different computer. Doesn't matter whether I'm playing a VIDEO_TS folder or whether I'm playing a disc, doesn't matter whether there is even a disc in the player or not. For VIDEO_TS folder doesn't seem to matter if the folder is local or on a network. Also, I have had the same effect when viewing VIDEO_TS movies through Front Row; thus I think the problem may be pretty deep in the OS's video code, perhaps even in the driver. My system has Santa Rosa motherboard with x3100 built-in graphics.

  • After exporting a slideshow in LR5 to USB or DVD playing quality is poor.  Any suggestions?

After exporting a slideshow in LR 5 to USB or DVD playing quality is poor.  Any suggestions?

It would be more helpful to understand your workflow and what type files you have made.
Are you using audio from both cameras? Do the changes/problems correspond with the camera switch?
Try this with a minute of the problem footage
Export a QT reference file(export QT(not QT conversion)-uncheck make self-contained in the lower left)
(a reference file is like a band-aid- do not use more than once).  Listen to it in QT- how does it sound?
If you have a mix/audio problem here it is most likely related to what you are exporting from FC.
    If it sounds good:
Create an AC3 and MPG2 of your minute test
Create a DVD with a track of your 1 minute test.
Build the dvd to a folder on your desktop.
Open the Video_TS(from the build folder) in the Mac DVD player App. Whatever you see and hear in the app is exactly what will end up on the burned disc. This is the best way to QC the DVD before you burn it.

  • Images jumping when DVD played on TV

I am working on a DVD slideshow project where the quality of the visual images is top priority. I am using digital photos stored in iPhoto.
I have made 4 short versions to compare the quality of the final products:
    1. used iMovie (varied transitions and times per slide) to build the slideshow then exported to iDVD and burned to disc. (I did not let iMovie render.)
    2. built the slideshow in iPhoto (varied transitions), exported to QuickTime Movie, then to iMovie and finally to iDVD.
    3. built the slideshow in iPhoto and exported to iDVD from there.
    4. used iDVD to build the entire slideshow from the iPhoto album: chose "page flip" as the transition.
The KBE was off in each case.
Version #4 looked the best on the computer monitor and so I went one step further with this one and added music - a piece stored in iTunes Library.
All four versions were burned onto the same disc and all four played smoothly on the computer; however, when I played the disc on my television, the images in version #4 'jumped' - each image was clear for only about a second. The television is HD.
Is there an explanation, and hopefully a fix, for this problem? Since the only difference between version #4 and the other three is the addition of an audio track, would that have created the problem?

I'm not sure why that is happening. You could try reburning at a lower speed and changing your disk brand to another high quality brand like Maxell or Verbatim. Make sure you have at least 10GB free disk space to burn. I doubt that the music is the cause, but you could try changing or eliminating that too, as well as eliminating or changing the transition. To adjust your burn speed you would need to save your iDVD project as a Disk Image (from the File menu), and then burn it using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. (When you open the Disk Utility window, if your iDVD project is not displayed in the left hand pane, then drag it in there. Select it and burn.) On my computer, the burn speed defaults to 4x, which is slow enough. Alternatively, you could burn using another program like Roxio Toast, that gives you more burn speed options.
You've done some handy research, and perhaps you could share your findings. Which of the methods that you used produced the clearest images in the final burned project when you played back your DVD on your TV? (Obviously you were having trouble with the iDVD one, but you might get it working.) Others have remarked that iDVD slide shows display better on computer preview playback, but I have not seen any comments as to whether the final burned product on DVD plays any clearer than slideshows created in iPhoto or iMovie.
Sorry I can't be more help. Perhaps others on this forum will comment.

  • Created project in PE4, burned to DVD - plays on Computer but not on DVD Player.

Created project in PE4, burned to DVD - plays on Computer but not on DVD Player.
    Vista Ultimate
Let me know what other info you need.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Burned DVD plays OK on computer but not on DVD player through TV

Did all steps through iMovie to make a DVD. No apparent problems surfaced during the process. The DVDs play fine on the computer but not on DVD player through the television. Suggestions were that I was using the wrong media, that the best was DVD-R. Same problem regardless of which was used: it may play well into the DVD and have problems when selecting a chapter, a slideshow or it can happen between chapters. There's no pattern to when it will malfunction or how it will appear. It manifests itself by slowing, going to jerky play or stopping completely; these problems may or may not be the same on DVDs that are made back to back but there is always a problem of some sort. I redid the DVD without a slideshow but the problem persists. I really don't want to do it without chapters but haven't tried doing it that way.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    James-
I suggest you try the disc on as many players as you
    can get your hands on.
While it is good to have a player to test the final
disc on, you can't be sure that you're not facing the
    quirks of just ONE player.
Of course this is no help if you only own ONE player.
The one that is your home DVD player. Many people on
these boards will reccomend the least expensive
player to use for testing. Often newer, less
expensive DVD players are more reliable than ones
that cost three times as much.
Have you had any success making DVDs in the past?
Very limited DVD making in the past but no problems such as this.
I really appreciate the responses so far and will look at all options. The DVD is quite full (an earlier response made note that this could be a problem) Since this is a church program that will be used on a vaiety of players, a disclaimer may be included explaining the possible problems.
Interesting that a lesser expensive unit could be more reliable...

    Hi,
It may be worth trying another burning application to see if this helps the issue.
Download and install the free utility, ImgBurn and use this to create the DVD.  Guides on using this to burn to single layer and dual layer discs are below.
