DVD plays on 4:3 screen and a 16:9 screen

I have a QT file that is DVCPRO HD (720p60) DImensions: 1280X720.
I'd like to burn a DVD that plays on a 4:3 TV (with black bars on bottom and top) and then it fills the screen (for 16:9).
How do I do this?
THanks!

In DVD studio Pro, under inspector, I checked "16:9 letterbox" this did the trick

  • Finished DVD plays (shows) complete green screen instead of movie for part of the movie

In Premiere CS4 the movie I made plays fine. In Encore timeline the movie plays fine. Yet when the DVD is burned and then played, part of the movie just shows up as completely green on the screen and then it will stop and the rest of the movie will play fine for a while and then the screen will go all green again. Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • I have apple TV, an aux DVD drive, 2 new flat screen TVs, and apparently watching a DVD with apple devices is beyond their technology... highly upset

I have apple TV, and apple aux dvd drive, 2 new flat screens, $5,000 worth of hardware and facy technology that apparently will not play a freaking movie... please tell me this isnt true..

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iDVD are you using?
what system version are you running?
how did you create the DVD disk you're trying to play?
    what fixes have you tried?
how much free space on your boot drive?
Did you follow this recommended workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Thanks for the follow up.
Missing in this equation were the version of Premiere Elements that you were using and the computer operating system on which it was running. But...
The deed is done. But.....Until now and after you went ahead and moved to version 12, we now learn what version of Premiere Elements you were using. We still do not know the computer operating system involved.
You just said Premiere Elements 10. Premiere Elements 10 is hit by a serious known display issue if the computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. In this issue, the only remedy is to roll back the driver version to about May 2013. The description of the problem and how to do the roll back are described in one of the Announcements at the top of this forum. What video card/graphics card does your computer use?
On another front, Adobe will be releasing a new version of Premiere Elements any day now. No one but Adobe knows the feature set for the new version. That type of information is announced at the moment of release of the new version.
So the remedy to the problem that you presented in this thread could have been...
    1. Rolling back the NVIDIA GeForce driver version to about May 2013 if possible (Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit, may not be possible)
    2. Move to another version of Premiere Elements (which you did)
I offer the above for consideration so that you can review your decisions. We are pleased to learn that Premiere Elements 12/12.1 works for you.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions and ask for clarifications, but remember that the answers are in the details.

  • IMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also play fine in Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • My DVD plays on my Mac and new BluRay player, but not on my TV

I burned a DVD with three mp4 movies. The movies play fine in QuickTime, and the DVD plays without a problem on my Mac. It also plays correctly on a newer BluRay player. However, when I try to play the DVD on an older DVD player (about 3 years old), I have problems. The DVD starts OK, and I can navigate the menu choices. However, I find that after about a minute, the player simply freezes, and I can't play or change anything. I tried burning a new DVD with a different format, but the same thing happened. I think the problem might just be that my DVD player is too old, but I wondered if there is a setting in iDVD to be compatible with older players. Any help would be appreciated!

I tried burning a new DVD with a different format
I'm not sure you mean because ALL video DVDs are in multiplexed MPG-2 format.
I suspect your set-top DVD player doesn't 'like' writable' media (it used to be fairly common). You might try using a DVD cleaning disc in case there is any dust over the player optical system.

  • Slideshow - save to macbook pro to DVD to play on non-Apple computer and DVD (TV)

I have tried to save a slideshow (with music) made in iPhoto to MacBookPro to then save to a DVD to play on Non-Apple computer AND to play on TV (DVD).  It acts like it is saving but then .mov won't play even on MY Macbookpro.  What am I doing WRONG?

This is supposed to happen, licensing issue mean that Apple can't AirPlay protected content to other devices. You might try VLC instead of Apples built in DVD player.

  • Plays fine in IMOVIE and IDVD but disk doesn't play right in home DVD Playe

I created a movie in IMovie and it plays fine there. I converted it to IDVD and it plays fine there, but when I burn the actual DVD, it takes 12 hours! and then it won't play on my home DVD player. (It starts out fine, shows the menu and has the movie, but halfway through it freezes. Or if I try to fast forward to skip to the next chapter it freezes.
I tried upgrading my Superdrive to the new Pioneer 111D (it was suggested to me that my older 103 was not compatible with Panther) and still the same problem.
I am noticing now that when I go to check my system profiler, it's now saying for the new Pioneer 111D that "disc burning is NOT supported".
I'm in the midst of a project and feeling pretty screwed. HELP!

First of all, I'm appreciating all the responses and help. This is a serious concern for me which I need to find a solution for asap.
As far as the media itself... the discs are TDK DVD- and I've ruined about 4 or 5 of them... each having the same problem...taking 12 hours to burn they play for awhile on a commercial DVD player then freezes up about 2/3rds the way through (unless you try to scan through, in which case it freezes up on the spot.) There are a total of 3 scenes... and the 3rd scene doesn't happen at all in the final burned disc. So, J.Keller, as much as I'd love to blame the media I don't think I can. But it's certainly a reasonable explanation.
Karsten, I have to tell you the thought that it might actually take LONGER to butn this disc is painful. It's actually only 45 minutes or so of material. But if I knew that it would take 24 hours but it would work perfectly I'd go for it! I will download the patch you recommend to see if it offers a workaround solution.
But I'm still perplexed that in the SYSTEM PROFILER for the Pioneer 111D it says that "burning is NOT supported". Should I be concerned about this?
At this point I'll try just about anything. So if J Keller thinks that by waving a dead chicken over my head while singing dixie would help create a workable DVD so I can finish this project for my boss, I'd give it a try.
Any other thoughts? I really appreciating the insights and suggestions.

  • Playing Burned DVD's  - some work, some stop and pixelate

I created my first DVD project with Final Cut Pro and finished it in DVD Studio Pro. I played it on my 2004 Panasonic DVD player without a problem, but when I sent it to family and friends many of them said there was chatter and sometimes it hung up and would not play right. I am trying to figure out if there is a specific DVD to use or is it formatting (DVD-R, or DVD+R) or are there settings I am missing in DVD Studio Pro that I should be using?

    Hi Setla,
And welcome to the forum. If it looks fine on your set top box and you used the same media as the disks you sent to your friends. Then I would drop the encoding bit rate and / or convert your audio to dolby (if thats applicable). Compressor checks for a maximum bit rate on build but that doesn't necessarily mean all players will be able to handle this (stacks of variables). My first choice would be to convert the audio and then if need be attack the video.
When making DVD's I would also recommend using something like Toast as this will go through a verify cycle which should rule out any dodgy media or writes.
    Enjoy.
