DVD plays on earlier macs but not on mine

I have a mac from 2009. I want to play a dvd that plays on earlier macs but my dvd player won't even recognise that there is a dvd. It whirrs a bit and then spits it out. Please help.
Thanks,
Tamara

Hi Tamara,
I have a macbook
The forums for the Macbooks having a black or a white plastic case are here:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=248
If you Macbook has an aluminum case, post here:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=249
If there are specific or recurring issues with MacBook DVD drives, it should show up in one of those forums.
If you want help figuring out exactly which Mac variant you have, do "About this Mac..." from the Apple menu at the left end of the menubar, then click on "More Info..." in the resulting window. If you copy and paste the results in the "Hardware Overview" into a post--EXCEPT for the serial number--people here can translate the info and make sure you find the proper forum for your Mac. For example, that info for my old PowerMac I like to use is:
Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 1.75 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
Serial Number: <removed>
Although yours won't have exactly the same info, this shows the format you are seeking. Note how I deleted the serial number. This type of info gets you help faster because it avoids a lot of "back-and-forth" posts trying to figure out machine-specific details.

  • TS2610 My project plays on any Mac but not on my dvd player.  Please advise.

My project plays on any Mac but not on my dvd player.  Please advise.

Unfortunately that didn't do the trick.  For the life of me I can't figure this one out.  However, if I author it using iDVD (with the same media) it works?  I'd make do with IDVD if I could get rid of the Apple logo in the lower right corner.

  • DVDSP DVD's play fine in macs but not in standalone players...

This might be attached to my previous problem, but I thought I would give it a new topic as it is now a new problem.
The DVD's I have made in DVDSP play as they should in DVD Player when inserted into the two iMacs we have, however when we insert the discs into a standalone/set top player, the DVD plays the main track first and THEN goes back to the menu.
What should happen is that a short intro video plays (first play) then onto the Menu where, of course, the viewer makes their selection.
If I stop the DVD by hitting th STOP button on the standalone player several times, I eject the disc and then re-insert it, the DVD plays as it should; showing the first play video and then going to the menu.
Would anyone know a solution to the problem apart from telling the client to hit stop first, ejecting and then re-inserting the DVD?
    Cheers,
    Spookola

I can only tell you what I'd start doing because I don't know what is happening here any more than you do. First I'd buy some other brand -R dvd blanks. Next I'd make some minor change to the DVD SP setup and burn a new set. You should know that burning dvd's on a Mac or PC is not as foolproof as commercially burned dvd's. You CANNOT guarantee compatibility. If you sell 50 copies you WILL find some people that can't play yours because of compatibility issues. For them you can try burning a +R dvd or buy another external burner and try that too. No single solution will guarantee compatibility when burning from a computer and playing on a commercial dvd player. some folks "never have a problem" but in general I think that's because they don't burn that many dvd's for that many people. sooner or later most folks that burn dvd movies on their mac or pc will find somebody that can't read their dvd.

  • Burned DVD plays OK on computer but not on DVD player through TV

Did all steps through iMovie to make a DVD. No apparent problems surfaced during the process. The DVDs play fine on the computer but not on DVD player through the television. Suggestions were that I was using the wrong media, that the best was DVD-R. Same problem regardless of which was used: it may play well into the DVD and have problems when selecting a chapter, a slideshow or it can happen between chapters. There's no pattern to when it will malfunction or how it will appear. It manifests itself by slowing, going to jerky play or stopping completely; these problems may or may not be the same on DVDs that are made back to back but there is always a problem of some sort. I redid the DVD without a slideshow but the problem persists. I really don't want to do it without chapters but haven't tried doing it that way.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    James-
I suggest you try the disc on as many players as you
    can get your hands on.
While it is good to have a player to test the final
disc on, you can't be sure that you're not facing the
    quirks of just ONE player.
Of course this is no help if you only own ONE player.
The one that is your home DVD player. Many people on
these boards will reccomend the least expensive
player to use for testing. Often newer, less
expensive DVD players are more reliable than ones
that cost three times as much.
Have you had any success making DVDs in the past?
Very limited DVD making in the past but no problems such as this.
I really appreciate the responses so far and will look at all options. The DVD is quite full (an earlier response made note that this could be a problem) Since this is a church program that will be used on a vaiety of players, a disclaimer may be included explaining the possible problems.
Interesting that a lesser expensive unit could be more reliable...

  • DVD Plays on computer drives, but not on dvd players

iDVD 06 - This is a new problem, just happened two days ago. Previous dvd's burned with idvd 06 work just fine on old and new dvd players. I always test them after burning. However this new project will only play on computer dvd drives (mac or pc) but not on my dvd players. The menu screen shows up, but when the play button is pushed it never starts. Disk is clean, re-burned dvd, re-exported the video and re-did the entire dvd, same issue. I have not changed any settings in iDVD 06.
Yes, I even re-installed idvd 06, but then somehow I lost some of my old themes (which happened to be the ones I wanted to use) I did back up my previous copy of idvd 06 which has my old plain themes that I love to use in the package, so I do have those. But if I bring them into the newley re-installed idvd 06, all the features do not work. Such as being able to change the type size on that paticular menu.
I am using Verbatim 8X DVD-R's and have successfully used these just the other day on another project! And those work just fine on an old and new dvd player!
I had to get these dvd's because my burner would not burn on the 16X DVD-R's that I recently bought.

    G-5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

No rhyme or reason... but tried one more time after putting back my old copy of idvd 06 with my oldest themes in it, and I now have DVD's that will play on regular DVD players!
Now, if Apple could just get us a firmware update for the SONY DVD RW DW-U10A which came with my G-5 and then maybe we could all burn disks at the new 16X speed! Instead of limiting our possibilites.
Oh and yes, I did contact Sony about firmware updates. They informed me that this is really an OEM drive (whatever that is) and that Sony does not support it!

  • Why will DVD play on one player but not another??

    Hi,
I made an ISO file using devede and then burnt it to a DVD using K3B.  The finished DVD will work on a Magnavox player but not a JVC.  Is there anything I can do about this???  Do some players have a "must be produced commercially" filter or something???

First, I am assuming you recorded your iso on +R type media.  Next, I'm guessing that the player that won't play your DVD is the older of the two players.  Some DVD players, especially older ones don't like +R media.  If this is the case, here is a possible fix.
Here is a thread on another forum which discuses changing the booktype on your DVD burner.  Here is a quote from the original post:
There have been many questions asked about how to booktype +R media to DVD-ROM
Many standalone Players, HDD recorders/players and games consoles don't like +R media but they are happy enough to play -R or DVD-ROM.
Some drive brands have tools to change this option but others don't. I have found that the easiest way to change your BOOKTYPE setting is to use a small burning tool called IMGBurn which can be found doing a Google search.
Below you can see some screen shots which guide you through changing your BOOKTYPE setting. For this I have used my NEC4551 but IMGBurn supports NU-Tech, Plextor, Ricoh, Samsung, BenQ, LG, Lite-on and NEC.
Once you have changed your BOOKTYPE setting, when you burn a +R/+RW disc it will be burned as a DVD-ROM which is the same as a bought movie and most players are happy to play these.
Since my DVD players are happy with +R media, I haven't tried this.  Both of my players are fairly new, and I made sure that +R was listed on the box as one of the formats accepted by that player.
As usual, try this at your own risk.

  • Streaming movie plays perfectly on MAC but not on PC, why?

I have created a streaming movie and put it online. I have installed the latest version of Quicktimne for PC. The movie streams and plays perfectly on my Mac however it does not stream on my PC. It plays on the PC when it has fully downloaded (in the browser using quicktime) but the sound quality is poor - I can hear lots of cackles.
Can anyone help with this please?
    Thanks

In addition to Neds suggestions, empty the Safari cache (which should be empty after a clean install).
Goto the Safari Get Info screen (in Finder or in Dock if you have Safari there), click the triangle on languages, and disable those you don't use.
My Safari response time was significantly slowed after the 10.4.5 update, and using the combo updater took care of that. The 10.4.6 combo update is located here.

  • Burned DVD works on PPC Macs, but not Intel

We have two identical copies of a burned DVD. When we insert it into one of the two intel Macs we have (MacPros), it spits them back out or gives read/write errors. When we put the DVD into either of the two PPC macs we have, they mount without issue.
Booting to an external gives the same error, so it's not a software issue it seems.
Has anyone else seen this before? Thank you for any help!
    Message was edited by: socokid

Are these just data discs? Or are you trying to use them for booting the computers? If it is the latter, Intel boot discs cannot boot PPC and vice versa. If it is the former, it's definitely a bizarre sounding problem. Unless, of course, when you say "when we instert it into one of the two intel Macs.." you literally mean only one of the Mac Pro's gives you problems then it's probably just a faulty drive. But if both give you problems, well, then it's still a bizarre problem.

  • Repair manual DVDs play in Snow Leopard but not in Lion

Two of my tractor repair manual DVDs don't play in DVD Player (v.5.5) in the latest Lion OS on the latest iMac. They play well in Snow Leopard booted from an external drive on the same iMac. In Lion, the DVD Player just locks up. Is there a more recent DVD Player, or should I use a different player altogether? These are British DVDs, but since they play in SL, I would have expected them to play in Lion too. Any suggestions?

I have the same version 5.5 of DVD player running Lion and it works; however, I can't test it because I don't have British DVDs. Also couldn't have anything to do with Regions since they're working in SL. And, you don't need iDVD - that is an application to author/encode/burn homemade movies - it does not function as a DVD player. However, you may want to try VLC instead of DVD player - supposedly that'll play everything.

  • Movies purchased on computer and home shared can be played on Apple TV but not iPad Mini.

Hi - I've recently purchased Dark Knight Rises and Toy Story 3 via Apple TV. Purchased, not rented. I then downloaded the movies on my
Computer (MacBook Pro mid 2010, iTunes 11.0.1). I then home shared the movies on the computer.
I can see and play the movies on Apple TV and the computer. However, those movies do not appear under the Video app on my ipad mini. Other movies, including ones I purchased recently, show up and play just fine on the ipad mini.
The default resolution is set to 1080p in iTunes on the computer. The computer is running OSX 10.8.2.
    Any suggestions?

I think I've isolated the problem. The shared videos that are missing from the ipad mini "Videos" app are 1080p. I thought the ipad mini could play 1080p, or at least downcode to somthing it could display.
    Maybe it can't.

  • Movie works on mac but not PC...help!

    Hi!
Hopefully someone out there can help me...
I am trying to make a video play on a website that I designed. The video will play on a mac, but not a PC. When the user clicks on the link, the video (.mov) should start playing in whatever media player that computer has installed, either quicktime or windows media player. It isn't working on a PC. Maybe if I convert the video file to a windows media file or to a file that is easier read my a PC it would work? I don't know how to convert quicktime files into .wmv files.
    help!!!
if you want to see the video, click on the "reel" link of www.williamday.net, then click on "reel" again in the middle of the page.

The problem is your page code (or lack of it).
You are directly linking to the file and bypassing any browser plug-in.

  • Burned dvd plays on Mac but not on player

my burned dvd plays on my Mac with no problems but on my dvd player, it just stops after 3 few seconds. any ideas what happened there?
    i used iDvd 4

    Welcome to the Forum.
The most likely reason for consumer DVD players to skip or stop on DVDs that play well in computer DVD drives, are excessive burn errors that the consumer players 'choke on'. All burned media (CD and DVD) has burn errors. Burning at lower speeds tends to reduce the error level, hence the recommendation to burn low-speed media for maximum player compatability. Computer DVD drives have a high level of error correction (after all - you wouldn't want to loose any data on a data DVD) and can handle the errors. Consumer DVD players don't - after all they are designed to playback pressed DVDs with low error rates.
Some consumer DVD players are more sensitive to these errors than others.
Sometimes using a different brand of media will help.

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!
