DVD project blinks, pixelates and freezes.

Hello there, greetings from Mexico! First time poster on this forum.
I've been attempting to compile a few projects with Spanish subtitles with DVD-SP4, using three tracks:
1. Video .m2v file.
2. Audio .ac3 file.
3. Subtitle .stl file.
The projects build fine and play fine within Apple's DVD Player, so I burn them either on Memorex 4.7 GB DVD-Rs or on Verbatim 8.5 GB DVD+R DLs. I usually burn with either Toast or Popcorn.
However, when I try to play them on my DVD player (a Sony DVP-NS315), all projects have numerous random, brief blackouts, some pixelation snafus and just plain freezes that last for up to a minute.
I've searched this forum for a similar issue, but could find none, so if someone's been through this, could you please give me a few pointers on the subject?
Thank you for your time.

Well, I tried re-encoding the project with Single Pass CBR and a bit rate of 7.0 mbps, and that didn't work, the screen keeps blinking randomly on and off. Retried it with 6.9 mbps, same result.
I asked a friend to let me test my project on his new, top-of-the-line DVD player, which was an unmitigated disaster, his machine did not blink, but completely froze every couple of minutes. Then I tried the same DVD on a friend's iBook, which only froze in two places, but those two places crashed the Apple DVD Player app. By the way, the iBook is running Panther 10.3.9.
I'm thinking, maybe my dismal results have something to do with the fact that I recently upgraded from Tiger 10.4.2 to 10.4.3.
Could it be that the upgrade screwed up something within DVD SP4, maybe I should trash and re-install DVD SP?
Furthermore, this summer I installed KDE running on Fink, but due to some issues I trashed the whole thing recently and am about to re-install while running the latest version of XTools.
Could my trashing of all the Unix stuff be behind my DVD SP woes?
It may be worth mentioning that I regularly run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Sorry for all this mess. But hey, what's the point of life without a challenge here and there?

  • DVD project with movie and additional files on same disk?

    Hi-
Dell 9200 (aka XPS 410), WinXP Pro SP2, Encore 2.0.
I have a DVD project that I am assembling and need to include different types of files on the same DVD. I have an educational movie that is already formatted on a stand-alone DVD (just like one you would rent from Blockbuster). It needs to go onto a DVD along with some additional supporting files in .pdf and .txt file formats. The DVD has to be able to autostart and play on both a home TV/DVD setup as well as a computer. Users also need to be able to access the additional .pdf and .txt files if it is viewed on a computer. Can these two viewing arrangements co-exist on one DVD? Seems to me that it would all work fine if I converted the stand-alone DVD movie into a something like a Quicktime or Windows Media file, created a XHTML file that can be used as an autostart menu, and then link the movie, .pdf and .txt files from there. All of this can then be burned onto one DVD that can be viewed on a computer, but I assume it would NOT be able to be viewed on a TV/DVD home setup. On the other hand, If I created a DVD using Encore I could just make an autostart screen with menu, but I don't think the menu would suppport something like linking to the .pdf and .txt documents (not that they could be viewed on a home TV/DVD setup anyway.
So, am I looking at having to make two separate DVDs--one with the movie and one with the additional .pdf and .txt materials? Would this have to go onto a dual-sided DVD? One side with the movie and one side with the additional materials? Would it be best to just convert the movie and stick all the files on one DVD? (Even though my boss hates this idea because it will reduce the quality of the current DVD movie).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    -=Scott

eDVD is one option. It uses the Interactual Player to link to your extra content directly from the DVD material. Your other option is just to create your own separate content for use on computers. DVD players only pay attention to the VIDEO_TS folder, which must be in the root directory. If you also have an autorun.inf in the root directory, Windows-based systems will follow the instructions there rather than treating the disc as a DVD-Video disc. So you could use an autorun.inf to launch whatever you want to play on the computer (Director projector, other executable, etc.). You can add that extra stuff to the DVD either by using the "ROM Content" feature in Encore or by building to a folder and then burning your disc with other burning software (be sure to use the UDF filesystem or it won't work in DVD players).
    Notes:
    1. Mac computers will still launch whatever application is set to handle DVD-Video discs in the System Preferences (usually the Apple DVD player).
    2. If computer users need to view the DVD-Video content, you will need to give them some help in doing that. (i.e. instructions to manually launch their software DVD player, linking directly to the DVD-Video content from your Director project, providing a separate copy of the video, etc.)
    3. eDVD's effectiveness is diminished by the fact that it requires installation of the Interactual player. If the user is unwilling/unable to install software on their computer, such as many corporate/educational users, they will be unable to take advantage of the eDVD features.

  • DVD's hesitate, pixelate and only on some DVD players.

Having a problem with burned DVD's that will lock up or ixelate when played back--on SOME machines?!?!? Other machines play fine. I've cleaned my burner--A LaCie. I've had Apple look at it three times.
I'm thinking of reloading the DVD pro software. Wondering if there is a glitch we can't find.
    Anyone have same problem?

Playback can be inconsistent due to many factoirs, even from one machine to the next. Good media and lower video audio rates usually help. Also details on how you made the project, settings and the rest. Take a look at this link:

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 10 on Mac OS 10.7.2 - Hanging and Freezing

    Hello there,
While I'm not very knowlegable about video editing software, I do use Premiere Elements 10 to edit videos for YouTube. I recently have been able to record using a device which records in 1080i, 29.97fps and saves as an mp4 file format. I've been trying to edit these files (which can be up to an hour long) in Premiere Elements; however, as soon as a video file from this recorder is imported and dragged into the project, it hangs and freezes. Sometimes, the hang happens when "conforming" the video file; other times it happens when trying to preview the video.
My theory is that it is due to the file format, or because of the sheer size of the file. The files can be several GBs.
I have tried to reinstall the program, but this hasn't worked.
Is there any advice you could give me?
    Thanks,
    LiamWatson28.

Hey Bill, thanks for the quick response.
It does use the H.264 CODEC. The project preset I'm using is NTSC-AVCHD-Full HD 1080i 30, although when I import the video to the project, I sometimes get a dialog box telling me that the project settings can be matched to the imported video, which I allow it to do. I have around 250GB of free space on my HDD. I allow the video and audio to conform and such on importing, I do not try to edit the video/audio while it is conforming. I'd also like to add that all files are transferred onto the HDD before the edit.
    My specs:
MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2011) running Mac OS 10.7.4 (Lion) I apologise, I had this wrong in the title and the original post.
    Intel Core i5 2.4GHz Dual-Core
    8GB RAM
    500GB SATA HDD
Intel HD3000 Integrated Graphics (if that's any help)
If there's anything else I need to provide, please let me know.
EDIT: I just tested editing a 10 minute video with the same file format and project preset, and, while it was hanging as frequently, it would only be for up to 5 seconds. Compared to the 50 minute video I was trying to edit, the hangs were much longer, sometimes becoming freezes.  I know that if there aren't any immediate fixes and using the same video settings, I'll have to reduce the file size by reducing the length of the video, so cutting more frequently rather than recording long stretches.
    Thanks,
    LiamWatson28.

  • Tried everything:  Burned DVDs blink, pause and/or freeze altogether.

    Hello there.
I live in a town in Mexico, where I volunteer screening art and foreign films for free at a non-profit cultural center. The place has a proyector and sound system, I bring everything else, coming out of my pocket.
I've been trying to show films we cannot get in Mexico, so I've mastered the technique of ripping and integrating spanish subtitles using DVDSP4. However, even as the subtitles seem to be fine, the playback has been a terrible pain in the neck.
I had a Sony DVD player, and at certain points the DVDs would blink or freeze up. I tried everything I could find out and think of, to no avail. Now I have an Oppo DVD player, and the video pauses for fractions of a second then resumes play, only to pause again a few seconds later, throughout the film.
As a test, I played a couple of straightforward 'ripped and burned' DVDs, and bingo, they play perfectly, so the error must be in something about DVDSP4. I'm using every trick in the book, firing with both barrels.
    My media:
    - Taiyo Yuden DVD-R, no luck.
    - Verbatim DVD+R, no luck.
    - Verbatim DVD+R DL, hit and miss.
For the build, I'm encoding One Pass VBR, minimun Bit Rate 4.0, maximum Bit Rate 6.4. I even tried a maximum Bit Rate of 6.0, no luck. Also, Motion Estimation either Best or Better, no luck.
I was burning on the SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-K04L, then bought an external Sony DRX-820UL-T. No luck.
I've tried Toast Titanium 6, 7 and Popcorn. No luck.
I've run Disk Utility to repair both permissions and the drive. No luck.
    In a nutshell: Help!!!
    A couple of thoughts:
    1. Could the Tiger updates be the culprit?
    2. Most of the time, the only subtitles I can find are from Spain, therefore in PAL format. I adjust the times to NTSC then integrate them to my project. Maybe this is the problem, but even if I turn off the subtitles, the problem persists.
If there's anything you can think of that might help me solve this nightmare, please let me know.

  • G50-70: empty DVD-drive clicking and freezing other drives for about 30 seconds all the time

Hello board. Big problem. Seem to be the only one having this after searching the board:
Brand new G50-70: When using OS from the SSD or using OS from the SSD and doing things with a USB-drive, the empty internal DVD-drive making clicking sound and sometimes freezing SSD read/write operation for about 30 seconds but all the time freezing USB-storage read/write operation for about 30 seconds.
When freezing there's always clicking. But when clicking there's not always freezing except when using USB-storage.
    OS is Win81-64.
An example scenario: connect USB stick, open terminal, type diskpart, dvd-drive clicks and freezes opening of diskpart for about 30 seconds, then the same may or may not happen when entering commands like clear the stick and format the stick.
Any clues, why I have this issue? Thank you very much for reading.

    hi georg43,
it's possible that there's a software running on startup that's accessing the ODD when the machine is being used (especially if the ODD LED blinks when it's being accessed)..
To check, you can perform a clean boot to temporarily disable apps & services running on startup. If the machine functions properly on a clean boot, you will need to enable the startup services/programs that you have disabled in groups of two or three (trial and error) to find the culprit. You can start by enabling the lenovo services and apps first followed by the Intel ones and observe.
In addition, you can also try to disable the DVD-drive under device manager and observe.

  • Why is my DVD project freezing when a video clip plays?

    Hi -
I have a simple Encore(CS5 Mac) project that is that is "stalling" when played.
The content of the DVD is made from an After Effects(CS5.5 Mac) project so I think I should provide information on that.  The 30sec AE project is mostly timeline animation until the last 6 seconds which is video footage.   The 7 second video clip is scaled way down from it's original dimensions and then masked off to fit in an area of the AE stage.
I rendered the AE project to a QT MOV with No compression.  In this format it was a very large file (939MB) but it played flawlessly in Quicktime on my desktop.
Then I brought that MOV into Encore as a timeline, added a one button menu,  and burned a DVD.
The prpoject plays fine until that video comes on. At that instant - the picture freezes for a few seconds - then plays for a second and then freezes again.  It does this stop and go until the video ends and then the DVD returns to the simple opening menu.
It seems to choke at the same time each time I replay it but I can't be 100% sure.  It's almost as if the disc actually stops spinning.
Why would the DVD freeze when the video content of my DVD project played?  What can I do to fix this?
    TIA some expert advice.
    JL

While I am familiar with the brand name, Imagtion, I do not know what their business model is. Some companies, like Memorex buy the cheapest blank media of that day, and rebrand it, with their logo. Others do the same thing. Poor quality blank media can cause all sorts of issues, such as hanging and skipping - hence my question.
I would do a test burn with high-quality blank media, such as Falcon, Taiyo-Yuden or Verbatim, and then burn about 4x on the speed. Test to see if that disc plays, without the skipping and hangling.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • DVD stops playing and freezes

I have the new iLife and I created a iMovie then with iDVD created a DVD project. I burned this on a TDK DVD+r and a Memorix DVD-r. They both "hang-up" while playing and freeze. Then they start again, but then freeze again. The places that they freeze are different each time. The DVD-r plays perfectly in my computer, but eh DVD+r also stops and "pixalates" What have I done wrong? Any help would be appreciated. I did read through the forum and couldn't find anything to address this. There was one post that mentioned getting Verbatim DVDs but they aren't available in the US. Another post mentioned getting Memorix, so I did try that.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Is your slideshow using still photos, created in iDVD and have more than 99 slides? And is the pause at the 99th slide? That is to be expected since iDVD, in order to get around the 99 slide chapter limitation (each slide is a chapter when added directly to an iDVD slideshow), it starts the chapter numbering over at 1 when it reaches the 100th slide. That is what creates the slight pause.
Using top notch media and burning at the slowest speed available as already suggested will help minimize the pause between slide 99 and 100.
If that's not what you're experiencing I will disavow any knowledge with this post and it will self delete.

are you backing up files, or doing a Time machine backup, either way, the Time machine will STOP when finished and show "last backup at XXXXXX"  meaning its done...... OR if when transferring files, it will show a progress bar on your desktop and vanish when files are copied.
Open up the Hitachi drive (your G drive is made by Hitachi, and the best made by the way).....and see if the files are there.
a MORE VISUAL way is to open the hard drive file, and drag and drop files INTO the Gdrive and you can see them visually be copied there as you do it.
To see your HD on your desktop GOTO  FINDER......PREFERENCES....then GENERAL TAB.........check the box marked HARD DRIVES.........then your Gdrive will appear on your desktop........open it from there,  and DRAG and drop files from anywhere INTO the Gdrive....... easy visual way to see the files being copied into the Gdrive.

I shared the slideshow made in iMovie to iDVD the project created was 16:9 - that is when I realized the video I'm working with is 4:3. I have never put a slideshow on a video DVD so am new to this. I will probably use the Revolution theme and need to figure out how to put the slideshow as a separate item. Believe it or now I have done quite a few video projects using FCE and iMovie with menus etc so not sure why this is confusing me. I have only used the main theme before with chapters. Do you use two different Revolution themes when adding a slide show. Guess this is a new question, but maybe F Shippey will replay back. I know I will figure it out - will try what you said first. The video project isn't complete, but could try with what I have done so far. Thanks

  • Working with HD and SD clips for DVD Project

I am working on a project in FCP and I have clips that were shot with both SD and HD camera's. The SD was imported to FCP using the DV NTSC 48kHz Anamorphic setting and I have yet to import the HD footage. The HD footage was shot on a Sony Z1U using HDV 1080 60i.
The final project will be put on a DVD but I was just wondering what the best way to deal with both SD and HD footage? What type of sequence setting should I use when combining the clips? Any other things I should consider before starting on this project? Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

You might as well bite the bullet and put the hd into an SD sequence. The dv will look TERRIBLE if you try to blow it up, and when going to DVD, it'll only be 720x480 anyway. The only upside of this is that you can correct any framing issues with the hd stuff-- you'll have a lot of latitude for repositioning shots.
