DVD quality looks poor...please help!

Here is my question: I shot a live teaching seminar using the EX1 & Canon 5D, 1080, 30p...jib shots, steadicam...so lots of movement of the speaker. What is the best way to edit this. I formatted in Compressor the footage to ProRes LT, edited in FCP, then exported to to a self contained movie. From there I dropped the movie in Compressor, compressed to best quality 90min DVD. And burned to disc in DVDSP. When I look at the DVD on an 40" HDTV, it does not look good. Seems there is digitizing in camera movements, and doesn't look very sharp. Any advice?

You are aware that DVDs are standard definition? That your footage is being downgraded to 720x440?

  • Having trouble with DVD Video files. Please Help! :)

Hi I recently got a film DVD I wanted to take a clip off. However although I can watch the section I want in Windows Media Player, when I import the film into Premiere - some of it is missing! there are 4 files '4-1',4-2','4-3',4-4' which make up the movie. I can load them all in but 4-3 is missing the last 15-20 minutes, even though I know its there - cos this file is the same size as the previous one which is full length. Does anyone know why this would be? The DVD is unencrypted.
Please help - its quite annoying that the small section of film I want is the bit that won't appear! Thank you very much
    Rich

    Based on this one line:
    The DVD is unencrypted.
I was assuming that it was not protected. However, as you point out, some aspects might be, and the OP might not be completely aware of this.
If there is protection, I strongly urge anyone to respect that, regardless of their intended use of the material. Copy protection is there for a very good reason. Regardless of what one might be able to do, they should be 100% ethical, and honor any/all copy protection. This is true for material from a videographer, or from a commercial studio. Should you need to use the material in such a DVD-Video, you should contact the author to get first permission, and then the original source material, that has not undergone the MPEG-2 compression to DVD-Video.
Again, I assume that the OP knows that this is NOT an issue, and will not figure into the problem. In that case, all above does NOT apply in this case, but some other reader might make note of it.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Why is DVD quality as poor as imovie09?

I've been using imovieHD 5.x for years. I never bothered to upgrade to 6.x. I recently purchased a new intel imac and FCE 4.x along with imovie09.
Most of my video has motion and either I see artifacts or jagged rendering of the clips. My camera is a Canon Vixia HV30 so my source video should be fine. I would love to get FCE to be my editing program of choice but for some reason, the quality was as poor as the imovie09 quality.
Here are the methods I've tried with results.
    1] final cut express 4.x > iDVD
Exported both contained and not-contained quicktime. (Didn't see any extensive options for export settings)
Imported video from camcorder via "Capture" in FCE
Burned BP and PQ and didn't seem to make much difference
    rather poor quality
    2] imovie09 > iDVD
Exported directly to iDVD which I read is not the way to go...
Burned both Best Performance and Pro Quality
    rather poor quality
    3] imovieHD 5 > iDVD
Dragged imovie project file into iDVD project
    Burned BP
seems to be the best quality so far...
    Final Notes:
I'm watching the DVDs on a 41" LCD Samsung.
I understand and am NOT expecting HD quality but as an experienced designer, I know when things have been compressed too much. That's what it looks like with my tests. There is a ton of data in these video clips and it seems like it's being tossed away.
    Please help...

I discovered the instability problem when I bought an HV20 eighteen months ago.
I spent months testing and it appears there is a problem when HDV is made into standard def DVDs in iDVD using QuickTime Movie.
I eventually discovered a couple of workarounds that produce (almost) perfect results.
Both these methods may sound incredibly complex as you read them but they are really quite simple. The only problem is that the first method takes a long time to render.
    1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
    a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.
    b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.
    c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".
    d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.
    e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.
    f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.
    g. Close it with the red button and click Save.
    2. This method is fast. Set your HV20 to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

  • FCE 4 - Video turning out smaller, and bad quality!! Please help!

I shoot 1080p full HD footage in 16:9 aspect ratio.
I use Final Cut Express 4.
I import the footage, edit it, but when I watch it back, or export it, the video comes out much smaller, with black bars ON ALL SIDES, and the quality is awful!!! This is after render of course.
This is a problem I started having just recently!! It hasn't happened before.
Is there some settings I triggered by mistake, or something I missed.
    Please help!

The information you can provide is available in the movie inspector in the QuickTime player. It gives exact technical specifications for your media. 1080p means very little. You haven't even given the frame rate or the frame size. 1920x1080 or 1440x1080?
H.264 is not supported in the FCE timeline. The media needs to be converted to the Apple Intermediate Codec.
Please gvie the item properties of the sequence you're editing in. Select the sequence in the browser. Press Cmd-9. What does it say?
Trying to figure out what's happened to your project requires a lot of detailed information which I cannot get without seeing your computer. As I can't see you you have to provide the information.

  • Can't change print quality...please help!

In reference to the box that pops up when you choose to print something: in the drop down menu where you can select "paper handling", "layout", "scheduler" etc. there used to be something that allowed me to select the type of paper I was using as well as the print quality. But now it is not there and I am completely unable to alter the print quality!
All that's in the drop down menu is: Copies & Pages, Layout, Scheduler, Paper Handling, ColorSync, Cover Page, and Summary. I cannot change the print quality when I select any of these options from the drop down menu.
I've downloaded the drivers for my printer on the HP site already and it doesn't help. I don't understand what is going on as the option to change the print quality seemed to have just disappeared. It seems like it's more of a Mac problem than a problem with my printer...I'm not sure.
Please help!!! I'm completely stuck printing low res things and I NEED to print better quality than this!

Are you certain that your correct printer is selected in the Printer: list?
Since reinstalling the driver have you repaired permissions?
What programs are you attempting to print from?

  • Toast 12 dvd quality SO POOR

    Hey All,
I just purchased Toast 12 and exported a H.264 via Premiere. Toast 12 is compressing it into an MEG-2 and the DVD is SO POOR. I can't give this to the client.
Toast is barely using the whole DVD and compressing a 14 gb to 2.5 gb. Just so strange.
    Anyone know how to help?
    -Peter

Toast isn't Apple software (neither is Premiere). You'll likely get more targeted answers on forums dedicated to that software.
Having said that, you are double compressing. Unless your material is in H.264, do not export from Premiere in that format. Export it in the native format in which you edited the material.
Once you have that file, let Toast do its thing.
fwiw - I find Adobe Media Encoder does a better job creating the various audio and video files necessary for DVD authoring. Do you have Adobe Encore? If so, use that to author DVDs. (or use iDVD - it worked great for simple discs).
    Good luck,

  • Poor Quality Export. PLEASE HELP!

In FCP X, I am trying to export my project in full quality. I went to quicktime export like I did in FCP7 to create a reference file for burning to DVD but the file was very pixilated and poor quality. what should I do to create a full quality export in FCP X?

So you captured via Firewire ... then it seems likely the footage is DV.
You imported the footage into FCP X, edited with it, and then exported using Share > Export Movie w/ Current Settings, yes? If not, how? What specific steps and settings did you use?
And then you burnt a DVD with the exported movie file and it looks pixelated on your TV? Did you do a direct DVD burn test using the original capture files, just to test that they are not teh problem?
    Cheers

  • DVD Player "nilP" ERROR  Please help!!!

Ok, I used to be able to play DVD's on my mac mini g4 dvd player application. So the tech came and did all that toady, and IT"S STILL NOT WORKING!!!! Please can anyone help me i have looked all over the forums and can't find anything. I think it has to do with one of the recent updates as that was the only thing i have done other than install some demo games. I currently have a Mac Mini G4 1.5 Ghz with 512 MB DDR SDRAM.

Hmmm, this says you can import from any analog site, and it addresses importing into iMovie:
    http://www.techtalkforfamilies.com/review/computersand_peripherals/review_pinnacle_video_capture_formac
But, these sites advertising it says it imports videos into iTunes via USB:

  • Exporting Flash for a DVD??? Please help?

    Hi there,
I have a flash presentation thats for a supermarket TV screen. Its big in file size 9.6MB. When I go file/export/export movie to quicktime and use the animation settings the file plays but leaves trail lines behind, skips frames and looks CRAP CRAP CRAP!
The quicktime settings I've used are either:
    Animation
    Quality Best
    Millions of colours
    All Key frames
    24fps
    or)
    DV - PAL
    Frame rate 24fps
    Quality Best
I need it to look high quality but I am not sure what settings to use.
    Can anyone help?
    Please.
    x

You can convert SWF to some movie format like AVI. You have tons of tools available for it.
I am currently working with Croatian television creating some animations.
    I use AdShareit:
    http://www.adshareit.com/swf-to-video.html
You can choose anything you like.
    Hope it helps.

  • Multiple DVD's ?? Please help.

    Hi All,
thanks to the folks that helped me with the last video issue.
I have a projetor that needs to play multiple videos. I have
exported from Adobe Premiere Pro to 3 DVDs in separate target
folders on the HDD. I have inserted 3 media members (DVDs) in to
the cast of my movie and using lingo in the first frame have
specified the .folder for each member (this part seems to work ok
as when I check the properties for the cast member folder it is
    showing the correct location i.e /movie1, /movie2 and /movie3
    respectively)
The problem I'm having is at playback and even in the DVD
preview panel when I double click teh cast members - it is
consistently only showing the first movie. How can I get the other
two movies to load and play when required?
Any help would be appreciated as my time line is running
    quite short.
    Best Regards
    Chris

    Hi Dean,
The 2Gig limit must have been the issue. I assumed that this
had been addressed as the 3Gig video played fine in WMP but would
only play part thereof in DirMX2004. I took it below 2Gig and it
worked ok, but unfortunately the quality wasn’t acceptable
(cinepak codec at 67%) as you can imagine. So I took the originals
and re-exported them from Premiere Pro to DVD specifying a folder
location as opposed to a drive. I didn’t need to change the
code much just things like movieTime to currentTime and
sprite(1).playRate=1 to sprite(1).play(). Also had to change values
from ticks to milliseconds. I may have to use the Xtra solution if
I can’t fix it this way.
    Hi Otterman
No I hadn’t tried loading them into the same cast
member. I had referenced their folder locations in the same manner
but then assigned them to DVDMember1, 2, and 3 respectively in
    frame 1:
    member(“DVDmember1”).folder=the
    moviePath&”DVD\movie1”
    member(“DVDmember2”).folder=the
    moviePath&”DVD\movie2”
    member(“DVDmember3”).folder=the
    moviePath&”DVD\movie3”
As I’d already made 3 DVD cast members with
Insert>Media element>DVD and named them as above I just
dragged these to create the sprite on the stage at the times I
    needed 1, 2 and 3.
Maybe forcing it into the same cast member will remove the
previous DVD from memory and allow the next one to play. I tried
unloading the previous DVD member from memory with lingo before
referencing the next one but this didn’t work either. It just
kept playing sprite 1 as the same DVDmember1 each time. I will try
it as a single DVD cast member and will let you know how it works.
Thank you both for your posts, will post back shortly with
    the result.
    Best Regards
    Chris

  • I need help with the Pinnacle Dazzle DVD recording software. Please help :D

I have recently bought a Platinum Pinnacle Dazzle DVD Recorder, this device allows me to record gameplay from my PS3 and put it onto my iMac (Capture Card) I nought the Windows version of the software and I need the iMac compatible one but I don't want to go into the shop and spend another £50 on it when I already have the Hardware. Does anyone use Dazzle too? To record their gameplay.
All I need is a Dazzle DVC100 Driver to help run the hardware. I have it connected and it all works, just need to view it on my iMac now. Any advice?
If all else fails, i'll just have to go and buy an iMac compatible one.
Also, what software would you recommend for editing, I intend on making a Montage (A video clip of my best gameplay on Modern Warfare 2 with some nice editing)
P.S. I'm only new to this, but I am 16, and I have an A in my GCSE ICT, so I know a good bit about computers.

Of course iMovie is basic, it is aimed at the home and casual user who wants to put holidays and the kid's birthday party on to a DVD and send it to Grandma. It certainly comes with more transition effects than I would ever use.
    Why?
Go watch a major, big budget film. Do you see a transition everytime the scene changes?
No. It is 99.9% hard cuts.
Movie making is about telling a story, not bombarding the audience with twirling "effects". They will soon get bored or irritated with that and never watch it again.
Now, if you want something more advanced, start with [Final Cut Express|http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress> and when you are ready, move up to the [Studio|http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio> version. Both have plenty of transitions and there are thousands of plugins available. I don't use most of those either -the interesting tools are those for color correction, keying and compositing. Those are what makes the finished product look polished.

  • DVD Quality Much Poorer Than iMovie Project Play-Back

Hi folks - I have run up against a problem that I haven't had before. Normally, playing iMovies is inferior to the finished product. But this time the finished DVD displays much more shimmering (especially of KB zooms).
Scrolled text sourced from Rolling Credits (which normally results in excellent quality) also displays this shimmering effect, and some of the stills are slighly artifacted.
A full-quality QT movie I made for test purposes is similarly flawed.
Because the stills originated from scanned slides, (though imported via KB), I would not expect absolute perfection, but as said above, the playback quality in iMovie is very acceptable with stable zooming and no shimmer effect. Most of the scrolled text was black on a nearly white background.
[Using iMovie 5.0.2, and iDVD 5 set to Best Quality. Dragged the iMovie package into iDVD.]
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Hi Catspaw
I'm glad You addreesed this question. I to asked it about half a Year ago and
then was informed that the qualty was the same but as You see it isn't.
I made a long movie of RedBull FlugTag in Gothenburg Sweden and on the
same DVD i droped a short version from same original material.
Diff. Full movie was a drop of the QT ref movie in the project.
Short version was an export as full quality QT which I dropped into same
theme in iDVD. The short version was significantly more jaggied.
Let's hope for an explanation and if there is any settings in QT full qual that
has to be set to give same quality.

  • Dvd quality is poor

    hi,
I have a brand new mac pro with hd studio. trying to output a dvd with sd footage and it's pretty bad with pixely text, nothing like the video on the timeline. so i used compressor with 8 mbps, best two pass, tried different field orders and still low quality. do people actually use this on a professional level?? can someone share some settings with me? I'm becoming discouraged. Do i have to go outside to get this done on a proper system?
    chase

I have just had this problem with HDV.
On my DVD player the results were juttery and dropped frames were apparent. It was rubbish. On my mac it appeared perfectly fine.
Through my torment I tried everything. Until I made a quicktime movie, of the sequence, and used 'current settings'. I then created a new sequence, titled HDV, and opened up the sequence settings. Here I opened the video processor tab and changed the field dominance to 'upper odd' and the motion render to 'best'.
Then I exported this single clip sequence again through compressor and chose 'Best 90 min DVD 16/9' mpeg2 two pass and dolby audio. I then then connected these files to the DVD Studio button I had prepared earlier and burned the DVD.
    Results were finally great.

  • Just Upgraded to iTunes 10 and Noticed WORSE SOUND QUALITY!! Please Help!

I have been using iTunes as my preferred media player ever since I can remember. I have never noticed a decline in sound quality. I recently upgraded to iTunes 10 and for the very first time found the sound to be simply inferior.
Initially I thought it was in my imagination, then i started testing to see if the speakers were at fault and they were not. I ignored it, but it kept on bugging me.. Eventually i loaded up old Windows Media Player and played THE SAME FILE and it sounded WAY BETTER!!
I tried fiddling with the sound enhancer and the sound check but it just isnt great.. I played songs off iTunes 9 on my sister's computer and the sound quality is higher..
Am I the only one having this problem? I have upgraded iTunes many times and this is the first time I'm experiencing this lack in audio playback quality.. I would hate to back up my library and re-install iTunes 9... Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I do have my grumbles with iTunes, the biggest being the installer.
It's not good at removing problems from previous versions and can bring up new problems on newer versions too, they just get carried across or are made worse. Basically they should have an option to do a clean install, (remove all trace of iTunes on the computer, not including the library, just runtime files.) I think you'll find it can mess up registry keys on new installs.
Make sure you backup your iTunes library first.
So you're probably better off finding a way to COMPLETELY remove the iTunes runtime files, and re-installing it again and see what happens.

  • Powerbook G4 12" 867mhz with dvd/cd drive problems - please help!

    Hello all,
Just realized this thread should have been in this section. I put it in the using your powerbook section. Sorry for the double post. I just wanted it to be in the right section.
I have just inherited a powerbook g4 from a family member who is upgrading to a new machine. It has dvd/cd drive problems. I'm totally new to OSX and a notebook machine and need some assistance. I've been briefly scanning the forums here and noticed problems with these drives on the model computer. Is there a way to fix this with an install of older software? Here is the problem, if I insert a cd into the super drive it mounts on the desktop, and itunes will play it but it skips and sounds very distorted. I haven't tried a dvd but was told it doesn't even see the dvds on the desktop. Here are the know specs on the machine:
    867mhz
    640 mb ram
    mac os x 10.5.1
    boot rom version 4.5.5f4
the burner info: matshita dvd r uj-015
    firmware version: docb
    Thanks in advance!

    Good Morning Mac,
According to your posted specs for the 12" G4PB you have the bare minimum requirements for Leopard. Even Tiger (10.4.11) should have 1GB RAM for decent performance (see my signature specs).
An easily installed 1GB RAM stick can be obtained at either of these reliable vendors:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/ or http://www.crucial.com/
However, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Try the following in this order:
Repair Disk Permissions with /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair DP, then do the following:
Run Repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk ........
Insert disk and re-start holding down the 'C' key until you see the spinning gear.
At Installer level...... DO NOT CONTINUE
At top left, use 'Utilities' Menu for Tiger or later and go 'Disk Utility'
Select your HD volume with Operating system on...
Select First Aid tab then select Repair Hard Disk button
If "RED" errors are repaired, run again, until none are reported then +run again+ just to be sure you are OK
Do NOT continue with the Installer... QUIT the Installer and return to the Finder ......... Eject the Disc
RESTART ..... Repair Disk Permissions .... AGAIN!
Try the above stuff first .... if that doesn't help, we will get into the "RESETS" steps next!
