DVD quality with DVD SP

I have been using iDVD to produce DVDs and would be interested in using DVD SP if the quality of visual playback for single sided DVDs over one hour in length (or dual layer DVDs longer than two hours) was significantly better than with iDVD.
With iDVD scenes with rapid motion are significantly degraded when producing DVDs over one hour in length. Does the compression used with DVD SP produce less artifacts with longer times?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi James:
You have more control over the final result of your finished disc in every way possible when comparing DVD Studio Pro to iDVD.
DVDSP bridges an interesting gap between what iDVD is - an easy application for drag and drop DVD creation - and what high-end DVD authoring applications like Sonic Scenarist (what most Hollywood feature films are authored on) are.
If you're using DVDSP at the "drag and drop" level, you are using the application presets for encoding your video to MPEG2 (the format that it must be in prior to being multiplexed - or "muxed"). This image quality is, well, "goodish".
For better picture quality results, you'll want to encode your source video to MPEG2 prior to importing it into DVDSP.
Compressor, the application that ships with DVDSP and/or Final Cut Pro Studio (is DVDSP still available as a stand alone product?) for transcoding digital video has very good presets for MPEG2.
There are several other Mac based products for encoding MPEG2 for DVD authoring (Autodesk Cleaner, Flip4Mac Episode, etc.); however, these all use QuickTime under the hood. When it comes to software encoding it's really a question of what level of control that an application gives you over the numerous settings when you want to tweak the presets. That, or, which application has the best presets.
If a DVD-Video disc is disctributed by a major studio, the picture is typically hardware encoded to MPEG2 (often with the Sonic SD2000 board - about $25,000.00 - but there are others) from Digital Betacam video tape.
While there's still some debate over this, a software encoded stream can look just as good as a hardware encoded stream. For years, the difference has been which one gets the job done faster. A PowerMac G4/400 can encode 10 minutes of DV-NTSC footage at Compressor's "best" settings in about four hours while a PowerMac Dual G5/2.0GHz can encode the same source at the same setting in seven minutes while a MacPro Dual/3.0 Duo Core can finish in thee minutes. Hardware encoding, by contrast, is the run time of the video (actaully, three times the run time of the video allowing for an analysis of the picture, encoding of the picture, then encoding of the audio). And, of course, you have to start with good picture quality to begin with.
If nothing else, it's worth learning DVDSP just to have direct control of the button flow on your DVD menus.
Hope this helps.

  • MFP M476dw poor color print quality with streaking

I bought this printer in January and only printed half a dozen or so color prints, but always has color streaks.  I have printed may 200 B&W pages and they seem OK. I ran the calibration I found in the operator interface, but doesn't make any difference. See attached original image and scan of the color print.  Yes the scan looks just like the color print.  Color cartridges all show 80% full.  B&W cartridge is 70%. scan of color print  Original ImageWhat can I do to improve this?  I really was expecting better color print quality.

    Hi
We are looking for a software which converts SWF to MP4, we found many software which does the job but issue is file size is not optimize.
We found Adobe captivate 6 which gives optimum quality with good output but thing is we do not have batch process in captivate 6. so we request you to create a plugin or give a best option which have batch render quality and optimize in file size,

Captivate is e-learning development software not a dedicated video convertor, you are better off trying something like Adobe Media Encoder or Super.

  • Image quality with the Canon 5Dmark 2 vs.. The 5Dmark3?

I use Leica lenses on a canon body with an adapter.  Is the image quality with the Canon 5Dmark 2 vs.the 5Dmark3 similar?  Any reason to get one vs. the other?  I like the idea, that I can change the viewfinder screens on the Mk 2. Any overwhelming improvement of the  5Dmark 3 that would warrant consideration?  Thanks to those who have used both camera bodies.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The primary advantage of a Mk3 over the Mk2 is the AF.  More points and it can focus with f/8.   If your Leica lens is manual focus then you wouldn't care about it.  The 5D3 has a little of an advantage in the ISO but not a huge factor.  Other than that I'd say IQ is the same.

  • Poor Rendering quality with CC, but not CS6

I've been through well over 10 hours with Adobe Chat Support trying to figure out why the quality of my renders have been awful lately. I use the 720p Vimeo Preset for uploading files for work, and with CC I've been getting consistently low render quality with any H264 presets. The H264 BluRay preset produces corrupted videos without fail.
Every time I've gone through a support call, I've been told that there actually isn't anything wrong with Premiere, but that I just need to raise the settings for my rendered video. No. No. No. And again, no.
I have a high quality pre-rendered video. If I re-render it through Premiere Pro CC or Encoder CC, even with 1080p presets, I get nothing but artifacts and corrupted files. I rendered out the same video on my other computer, it looked great. I thought I was having a graphics card issue, but it's CC.
I have Encoder CS6 installed on this computer. Don't know how. Never had CS6 anything installed, but it's there. Anyways, I tried rendering my high quality video through CS6 and it looks beautiful. Installed a trial version of Premiere  CS6, again, no issues whatsoever.
Observing the files after the fact, rendered videos from CC are about a third of the size of videos rendered in CS6. They render in half the time as well.
I wasn't quite sure how to approach this, whether or not to report it as a bug, or if there's something natively different about the settings in both versions of Premiere or how they work?
Could this possibly still be a graphics card issue? I have to deactivate one of my graphics cards to avoid playback issues in Premiere, and I recieve error messages regarding not having enough vRAM if I try to open Photoshop with that same graphics card deactivated.

Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 - Must be deactivated to use premiere, but I get error messages if deactivated when trying to open photoshop.

I don't know why it is, just that it was a bug that was revealed about a year ago. I had similar problems with my 9800 and could not for the life of me figure out the cause. I had Epson telling me it was the humidity. I had Chromix telling me to put the UV filter on my Spectrolino, and it all came down to the default printer. Not sure exactly where I read about it first, but I'm glad that one more person now knows.

  • Variable scan quality with HP Envy 4501

I see my scan quality is variable on different days. Sometimes the same scan comes across granier than other days. I then try restarting unplugging reinstalling printer etc. Works sometimes, sometimes does not
    Any clue what's going on?
See these 2 examples. You see a certain graininess in the second image

    Hi @sidpri,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are getting variable scan quality with your HP Envy 4501. I am happy to help!
I would suggest, to make sure the printer's power cable is plugged directly into the wall outlet, and not a surge protector, Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
Also, to make sure the firmware is up-to-date. Getting Printer Updates for HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3540, 4640, HP ENVY 4500, and HP Officejet 4630....
Another option is to go through this guide, Unexpected Scan Output Using HP Scan Application for HP Multifunction Printers When Using OS X v10.9.... (This guide will work with Mac OS X 10.10 as well.)

  • Any loss of quality with iPhone from 256 to 128 kbps

I have to decompress my iTunes songs for my iPhone as I have them as AIFF.
Is there any loss of quality with the limits of the iPhone if I use 128 kb instead of256 ?

Greg, I don't think you will notice a big deal of a difference.

  • BF3 poor audio quality with Dolby Digital Live anabled.

Hello, i have a X-Fi Fatality card connected to audio receiver with the Toslink cable with the Dolby Digital Live enabled, and in BF3 i hear that bullets sounds more like popcorn crack very low quality, with BF2 the audio was awesome. Anyone else having the same problem?

  • Audio Quality with 2.1 update - GONE!

Has anyone else noticed that the audio quality with the iPhone after the 2.1 update has gone downhill. On several calls today I have had people on other iPhones asking for me to repeat myself, and me to them. We all got together today and it seems everyone in our little group has the same problem.
The calls I have made in the last day after the update to 2.1 are in the same area and places. Everything sounds bassy like the highs are gone. The quality is gone! When people talk I can hear a break-up (distortion) where the quality is lacking. What did Apple do to the awesome sound the iPhone 3G once had?
I would rather have a program crashing phone with great sound then what this has become.. Anyone else having the same problem? Is there something new under a secret icon on the phone that lets one fiddle with highs and lows?? Help my sound quality is gone...

I also got the same problem with voice quality. My friends cannot hear my voice clearly and always ask me repeat and repeat. One more thing, iPhone3G always pick up a lot of background noise. Because I used Motorola V9 which voice quality is better iPhone3G. I hope Apple can improve the voice quality soon, otherwise I need throw it away and use V9 again...

  • Bad quality with ken burns slideshows on DVD

I've created several movies from still images using iMovie 08 (7.1.2) and its Ken Burns effect. The preview in iMovie looks really great and plays fluid.
Then I've exported the movie using the checkmark to produce a "large" video file. The result was then selectable in iDVD 08 (7.0.2).
Now I've made some nice looking menus and linked my movies to the project. The built in project preview of iDVD still showed me good looking results (the resolution was slightly decreased in order to meet DVD specs but that is acceptable).
But after burning the project to a DVD (or exporting it to an image file or VIDEO_TS folder) the quality went absolutely terrible! There are huge compression artifacts on some regions and all imported iMovie clips are studdering very heavily. Especially fast Ken Burns pannings suffer from a bad encoding quality.
It's driving me mad because those problems only appear on that part of the DVD I've created using iMovie. The (animated) menus and imported camcorder clips are playing fine in a good quality.
I've double checked the export results from iMovie (playing the produced m4v file using Quicktime and VLC) and they are absolutely fine...
    Is there anything I'm missing?
The iDVD project settings are PAL, 4:3 aspect ratio and professional quality (even tried high quality and best performance at no luck). The entire project length is only ~20min...
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Okay, you are absolutely right. But it's a pity that Apple restricted the encoding engine in such a way. Users might think that a setting which is called "professioal quality" just does it job and encodes the material at this level.
I understand that a professional application like DVD SP offers a lot more settings for advanced users (without the ease of use when compared to the simple iDVD workflow) but I'm quite sure that it does this job better even with "default" settings.
For me I'm now doing those things with a 50$ version of TMPGEnc
    Anyway, thanks for your help!

  • IMOvie DVD Quality with jpg images

    Hi,
I put 130 High res jpgs into an iphoto album, and I then imported them into iMovie. Added two sound tracks, and then went to iDVD to create the DVD. I dont think that the quality is good at all, and I am wondering what I may be doing wrong ?
Can anyone tell me if there is a hig res setting in iMovie or an HD setting ?
I am burning to a -R DVD, and then playing back on my TV
    Thanx.

    Hi Tanko:
You have another option, edit all those HighRes jpegs in IMOVIE9 or FotoMagico.
If you use IMovie9, export as full to QT, then record the file to a USB thumdrive and play it thru the WD Media Player thru HDMI to your HighDEf TV
You will be able to view them in their full resolution, edits and all even with music tracts.
    Thanks,

  • DVD Quality With Toast Titanium 8 Help

how come when i download a movie and watch it on quicktime the quality of the video it perfect but when i burn it with Toast Titanium and watch it on my dvd player the quality isnt as good its kinda pixilated?
    thanks for the help

the pixel would probably be caused by:
    1. poor quality in burning (dvd/cd burner is old)
    2. "medium" transfer, the data goes through many process of in and out having quality lost in effect... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-1
    3. original video size is small so it has to "crop" when shown in bigger screen

  • I've reduced my project size to "high quality," with a resulting 2.42GB size and 78 minutes project time. With my 4.7GB dvd, I should now have more than sufficient space, but I still get 'Your project exceeds the maximum content duration."

Am I simply out of luck? The video itself is 65 minutes with pretty simple music and photos in the themes with no scene selection option.
    Thanks.

iDVD is not concerned with size, just length.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1502?viewlocale=en_US
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.
