DVD question for 1.25 Ghz 15" AL

Hello,
Just a quick one - do I need to buy a specific kind of DVD for my PB 1.25 w/ superdive? I see DVD + and DVD - on the DVD blanks, but no mention on the PB.
Thanks!

Hi J --
When I go to System Profiler > Hardware > Disc Burning on my PowerBook (albeit a different version than yours, but we're both running Tiger), I see information about the specific media my SuperDrive will run as well as it's make and model number:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E:
Firmware Revision: GAN7
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No
Everything's there, I think, except the speed. And that you can get, along with any other specs you need, just by Googling the make and model number and finding the manufacturers listing (or some other reputable site listing).
If you need more info, post back. It's very possible that someone on here having a PB with the same exact specs. as yours (superdrive and all) will be able to more specifically answer your questions.

  • Question about using DVD covers for the movies I import

Question for all you mac genii - When I import a dvd that I own into my itunes library and sync to my  tv, how can I get the DVD cover art to appear so it looks like the stuff I have purchased from the itunes library? It there a way to edit the cover art for movies? Thanks in advance...

You add it just like you would for music - the catch is that if you are doing syncing, you need to re-sync the whole file (so the embedded artwork will transfer). Add the artwork, un-check the movie/tv show to be synced, do a sync (it should be removed from the ATV), and then check it to synced again and do a sync (it should push it back out to the ATV again).
Kind of a pain - so it is best to tag your files (MetaX is awesome) before you do any syncing of files.

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

  • Hi there how are you guys out there of this forum? I got a question for y'a

Hi there how are you guys out there of this forum? I got a question for y’all
I wanted to know how I could record different folders using iTunes
Cause when recorded 2000 thongs on the DVD
There were 2000 songs to go through
So I really wanted to have had folders and then the music recorded inside them
So I could get right to where I wanted real quickly
Could anyone please teach me how to do that real quickly?
Can we do it with iTunes?
I know we can do it with Nero.

    1) Go to file, select new playlist. Creat the playlaist.
    2) Download your music into iTunes.
NOTE: CHECK 'Recently Added' before you download your music.
If the select boxes has a check in them, turn it off by
holding down the 'ctrl' key and selecting one of the
checked boxes. This shold turn off all the checks.
It would be better to clear 'Resently Add' of all
previous downloads, but I don't know how to do that
    yet.
    3) under 'PLAYLIST' on the right, select 'Recently Add'.
all of your song should show there with a check in the selection
    box.
4)Hold the shift key and select the frist (selete records name),
then the last recorded tune. All of the recordings shouls light
    up blue.
    5) While holding the 'shift' key, drag one of the records to your new
playlist. All of the blue highlighted song will transfer to the new
    playlist.

All laptop drives are a standard size and any SATA Blu-ray drive will fit. Remove the rear mount and bezel from you old one and mount it on the new one.
Here is a thread where the guy has done the same thing, Huffer has provided a video. It talks about a Dell and it's a little long, but it does eventually get to the part where the front bezel's are change out.

It has been reported that the Sony Blu-ray drives are giving problems, but after reading some of these threads, it sounds more like a software problem.
When you install the drive and boot up, Windows will automatically install the driver(s) for you. HP Media Smart DVD is the only Blu-ray playing software that HP has to offer and it can be problematic.
I would recommend to buy some third party software form ArcSoft or Cyberlink. Keep in mind that Cyberlink makes the software for HP, so if you have problems with MS DVD then they may occur with Cyberlink. You can always use their trial first.
Here is a link to MS DVD, I use this on in my dv8 and it will (should) work in your Dragon.

Save it to the desk top and install it from there, not from a temporary folder. If you are using Commodo Fire Wall and/or AVG anti virus software, these have to be disabled before downloading and installing MS DVD.
If you have problems installing MS DVD, post again and there is trick to get it to install.

  • Basic questions for a self-taught re: HDV for SD HDV (yes again)

ok - like many others posting on this topic, I am apologising for going over what seems to be one of the most covered topics out there, that still isn't clear!
I am trying to teach myself DVD SP4 in the same way I did with FCP5 (trial, error and lots of forum searching). I am by no means a pro on FCP - but have certainly got enough understanding of it to have cobbled together 7 23 minutes episodes to broadcast! I have gone thought the DVD SP4 Manual and forums and lots of it just makes my brain ache - what mostly lets down my understanding are formats/compression/codecs.
So - my main questions (for now....)
-In DVD SP I couldn't import my QT movie into my assets list as it was an "incompatible format" - is this because it was HDV to a SD DVD Project? Doesn't the process of DVD SP encoding it as Mpeg 2 make is SD anyway?
-I read a post from someone in a similar situation, who advised exporting a HDV sequence as Uncompressed 8 Bit, and bringing that to DVD SP. So am doing that now (6 hours or so for a 23" sequence) and am hoping it gives a great looking picture, but I have seen from its preview icon that its a 720 x 576 frame - why is it not exporting in 16:9? or will it squeeze that down to normal once it's in DVD SP?
Really appreciate any understand you can help me with.
    cheers
    Hugh

    Hughey wrote:
Going back to my original questions - could the problem be a HD file in an SD project?
No. If you followed the workflow process from the above post you would have a SD mv2 file. The file should be playable in Quicktime and it should be 16:9.
EDIT: Yes. Reading back on your OP this question ->
In DVD SP I couldn't import my QT movie into my assets list as it was an "incompatible format" - is >this because it was HDV to a SD DVD Project? Doesn't the process of DVD SP encoding it as Mpeg 2 >make is SD anyway?
I believe that importing a HDV file into a SD project would give you that error but if you follow the above steps and import the mv2, AC3 files you should not get that error.
The reason you got three files is because that is how the preset group is made up. To be completely truthful I duplicated that preset, deleted the AIFF part and renamed the group. I now use that as my default settings when I bring any asset into Compressor.
As far as bring video assets (quicktime SD/HD, or other) into DVDSP in general you can do this but, what is happing is that in the background DVDSP is going through the steps from my above post and creating the mv2, AIFF, AC3 files for you (based on your preference setting in DVDSP) and then replacing the video files you brought in with the compressed files.
Can you play the mv2 file in quicktime? If not then something else must be going wrong.

  • Question for Mike - LaCie FireWire & iDVD5

Mike - Can you help please ? John Beatty suggested I post this to you :
I have just bought a LaCie Double Layer bus-powered Firewire DVD. It is an NEC DVD+-RW ND-6550A device. The drive came with Toast 6 Titanium, which is now installed.
I also have an internal Matshita DVD reader/ CD writer as part of the original G4 setup.
When I attempt to burn a project in iDVD5.0.1, the internal drive opens up and I get a message telling me to insert a DVD, even though this is not a DVD writer. I've tried Control-clicking the Burn icon, but nothing different happens. There is no option for drive selection in the iDVD menu structure either.
I don't really want to spend ages writing Disk Images, then writing to the LaCie, and I've searched this forum for a similar issue - but 'fraid I can't find anything similar. Does anyone have any suggestions that will enable iDVD to recognise the external LaCie ?
    Appreciate any advice
    Paul
    G4 AGP 500Mhz; Mac OS X (10.4); 768MB RAM
RE: How do I get iDVD5 to recognise my external DVD Drive ?
Don't skip this route - the amount of "extra" time is almost zero - in effect iDVD is doing this anyway behind the scenes to some degree. And separating encoding from burning makes a lot of sense. I always "Save as Disk Image" and burn separately.
And there is a guy that works for LaCie that frequent this forum:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?224@@[email protected]/7
I think you just need the proper disk burning profile from LaCie. You could probably e-mail Mike at the address on his profile. Or post a new thread titled "Question for Mike - LaCie Firewire and iDVD5"
    John B.

    Mike
Thanks. I tried burning a disk image for a 48min video in iDVD. That worked fine when previewed. I then burnt it to DVD in Toast 6.1 using the Copy (Image File option) Tab.
The resultant DVD will not play in either my internal Drive, nor my normal DVD player - which is a multi region player. The DVD is only recognised in the external LaCie. BUT, playing the movie only shows chapter 1 of 12, and there is no sound at all. (despite the preview showing it to be ok).
As a test, I burnt the movie in iDVD5 using the Pfurz & Hurz plugins. It burnt ok, but I got the same result - chapter 1 only and no sound.
My supplier for the LaCie rive suggested I also try and export the movie from iMovie to a Quick Time compression at full DV quality to make sure that worked. It doesn't - despite a 35Gb spare capacity on the Hard Drive, I either get a complete system hang with hard restarts required, Error 36 or the occasional short clip compressing OK. I'm at a loss - the fact that I get a decent image file from iDVD indicated there's nothing wrong with the video files...
    Any suggestions ??!

  • Maximum Hard Drive Capacity for 1.8 GHz G5

My boot drive is full and I want to install a larger one. I have several questions for the mavens on this forum:
    1. What is the maximum sized SATA drive for my system? SATA or SATA 2?
    2. Can I use Time Machine App connected to a 1TB external drive to restore all my files onto a new Upper bay drive?
    3. The Optical Drive is broken. Can I install a new one and which one(s) do you recommend?

    1. I believe 2.1 TB is the limit for PPC Macs. If a SATA 2 drive make sure it has jumpers to slow it to SATA 1 speeds, (pins 5&6 on WD drives).
    2. Is the external drive Firewire?
    3. Easy...

  • MPEG2-DVD question

I have a premiere CS5 project with HD 1920x1080p 24fps.  I have (2) 45 minute timelines and I am using Encore to author my DVD.
Please help me understand the best way to approach this.
My first thought was to import both premiere timelines into encore and create the dvd.  The resulting project was about 6GB so I used a Dual Layer DVD-9 for the burn.
From reading comments here, I got the impression that exporting from Premiere and creating MPEG2-DVD files might be a better option for better quality.   I did this using Match Source Attributes and created two export files which I then brought into a new Encore project.  The resulting project totals about 4GB.
Did I do this right?   If this seems right, is the quality going to be the same using the second method?   If the second method is good, I would be happy as I would be able to use less expensive single layer DVDs vs dual layer DVDs.
Please let me know the best way to approch this.
    Thanks
    Ted

    Ted,
Glad you're asking these questions because they are exactly what I want to know too.
I have been importing sequences from Pr, then using the Progressive Hi Q 7Mb VBR 2-pass preset, which looked to be the highest quality preset.
However, after a series of problems (associated with multiple sequences in the one timeline), I re-coded using the Automatic preset.
I compared DVDs produced by the two presets on a high quality player.
I couldn't spot any differences in colour, contrast, brightness, etc, but I could see that when objects moved, the Automatic gave clearer motion! ie, less edge artifacts (can't remember the correct term).
This surprised me because I always thought a 2-pass encode was superior to a 1-pass one.
So, until I find out more about encoding, I'll stick to the Automatic preset for projects I encode in Encore.
Might try encoding in Premiere Pro  -  as Ann suggests.
Nevertheless, i'd be interested in your findings.
    Thanks
    Erik

I know you probably wont be able to answer all question I just wanted to convey what I am trying to do.

  • Questions for I/O interface experts

I have few questions for I/O interface experts:
I have a Power Mac G5 2.3 Ghz 8GB of RAM, PCI-X slots, and am running Final Cut Studio FC version 6. I currenly have an HD project on my timeline (uploaded directly form a P2 card via 400FW), and I'd like to be able to output on a HD VTR deck as wellas a BetacamSP deck:
    1) which AjA Kona cards (3, LHe, LH) is right for me?
    2) did you personally experience, or are you aware of any issues with this Kona card and Final Cut version 6? Any tips before I purchase?
    3) will this card allow me to output uncompressed HD, that is, the same quality I uploaded?
    4) in which of the slots on my back tower does it go? 64bit 100MHz or 64bit 133MHz?
    Cheers,
    Rinaldo

I think FireWire is probably the best route.
The main difference between the two seem to be that the 1814 has more inputs and the ADAT interface, the 410 has more outputs.
So are you planning on recording, then go for the 1814.
If you envision that 2 mics and 2 inputs is enough for your recording needs and you eventually want to mix surround you'd need the 410 as it is the one with enough outputs.
If you want specific advice about interfaces I suggest you ask in the Logic forums as those users would be most experienced with this aspect of an audio system.

  • What is the best DVD Creator for a Mac Book Pro to replace iDVD?

What is the Best DVD Creator for a Mac Book Pro to replace iDVD?  Have Maverick OS.

I have already looked at other threads in this forum, so 'I venture forth' to ask my question here:
I have a 44 minute carefully edited iMovie with several chapter markers. I dimly recollect that when you 'dump' the entire movie into iDVD (my version is 7.1) it should detect the markers and create buttons to link to specific scenes. Well, the 'dumping' process obviously doesn't work.
How do you get iDVD to recognize the markers and ceate buttons to link?
I can create with iDVD a DVD that will play the movie in its entirety. This is not suitable for my purposes. I need access via a menu to specific scenes.
    Thank you,
    Klaus

  • DVD Writer for Sun Fire V440

I was wondering if anyone had found a DVD writer that will work with the Sun Fire V440. I would like an internal drive if possible but an external device would also be acceptable.

    Hello,
the V440 uses a slimline drive like these ones in notebooks.
Sun doesn't offer a slimline DVD writer (only full-height).
You might be tempted to install a slimline DVD writer for notebooks or server, but you have to keep two things in mind:
    - Installing non-Sun or unsupported components voids your warranty/service contract.
    - Slimline drives have no jumpers to select master/slave or cable-select . All drives use cable-select (or reverse cable-select). This setting is determined by the firmware of the drive.
If voiding the service contract or warranty doesn't bother you, get a drive from a dealer that is able to flash a new firmware to the drive or can sell a drive with the correct non-Sun firmware (and the correct setting cable-select or reverse cable-select).
Regarding the brands or types of DVD drives used by Sun, review the Sun System Handbook.
Using an external DVD writer in an USB enclosure might be possible, but the integrated USB controller (of the V440) is only USB 1.1 (supporting dual speeds of 12 and 1.5 Mbits/sec) which is insuficient for a DVD writer.
I would recommend that you browse the messages in the solarisx86 Yahoo group.
    http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/messages
In this group you can find a lot of expertise. Send a single e-mail to one or two people (pointing out that your question isn't directly related to Solaris x86). Posting a message requires joining the group and please keep in mind that your off-topic question is sent to every subscriber of the maillist.
