DVD-R blanks - problems

I bought a pack of 50 hp DVD-R disks and it seems there are a few bad ones.  Some don't register in my DVD burner (DVD/VCR Combo) or in my HP TouchSmart...I will get a message stating disk cannot be read.  I am positive the disks are unused.  What can I do about the bad ones?  Probably 1 out of every 5 is bad.
Thank you!!

Hi,
Well, throw them away and next time do not buy that brand. Which brad is that ?

  • DVD is blank?

My MBP is saying a DVD is blank, but I have confirmed it is not on another computer.  It contains pictures from a photographer, any ideas of what could be the problem?

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro.
I burned a folder with 2000 jpg files to a DVD on my iMac.  When I try to read the DVD my MacBookPro it says that the DVD is blank.
    See below:
See how it is identified as "blank".
So I take it back to the iMac and it shows all the data OK.
    See below:
So, I put the 2000 jpg files on a memory stick and copied them to the MacBook Pro.  I burned a DVD on the MacBook Pro.  The disk reads OK on the MacBook Pro.
Then I put the DVD on the iMac and it is OK there also.
    In summary, then:
Burn DVD on iMac and Macbook Pro thinks it is blank.
Burn DVD on MacBook Pro and iMac thinks it OK.
Is the problem that the DVD burned on the iMac is not quite right?
Or is the problem on the MacBook Pro that it failing to read the DVD properly?
Don't know if it matters, iMac is 10.5.8
    MacBook Pro is 10.7.5
    Thanks for any help.

  • Windows Installation DVDs Recognized Blank!!!

I have to install windows to do my work, but recently after I erase my previous Bootcamp drive with win7 on it(cause I’m planning to re-install windows), I start again the installation procedure. I expect it would be smooth, but my iMac just can’t read win7 DVDs, actually read as blank DVDs.
I burned like 7 or 8 DVDs but the problem wouldn’t fix. I also changed 2 ISO files(Original Microsoft MSDN), and problem is still there. I tested that those DVDs can be recognized on my PC, so it’s not the DVDs’ problem.
I tried to inserted a data DVD, and it can be read fine, so it confuses me whether the DVD drive is broken.
So what’s the problem on earth??? I badly need windows.
    Hope for reply soon.

Boot Camp will only install from a full retail licensed version of Windows, based on your hardware's limitations:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1846
If you want to install from OEM, or other versions of Windows that are licensed but not full retail, you may want to try a different virtualization engine*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Copies of the Windows installation CD generally are not legal if they were copied to blank CDs yourself or by someone else, and may have copy/protection schemes that prevent install. Only use genuine Microsoft operating systems.

Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.

  • DVD Image Quality Problem

I just began using Final Cut Studio and elected to burn my DVD from IDVD as I am not yet comfortable with Sutdio Pro. When I play back my disc on any computer MAC or PC it plays fine. However, when I play it on a set-top DVD player two problems occur. 1) I get occasional brief pilelation in a scene. It doesn't always happen at the same place in the playback. 2). Some of the video scenes (especially those which I have extended by slowing the motion, even thogh I have applied frame blending) tend to flicker. Neither of these problems occur when the DVD is played on a computer/monitor or even when played on a tv monitor using the s-video output from a computer. But both happen on the three set-top players I have tried. Any thoughts. Thanks.

Welcome to the world of authoring DVDs. It is very difficult to troubleshoot the exact problem. For starters, iDVD did its job, it made a DVD compliant disc that plays on a DVD player. It plays better on your computer DVD player for a variety of reasons. Your computer has much more sophisticated hardware/software for DVD playback than does a tabletop unit. It could simply be that a progressive scan tabletop DVD player may give you better results. The point being that two different players can yield different results. Artifacts/ pixilation can be by-products of MPEG2 compression (which is what iDVD does to create a DVD). It is helpful to have a basic understanding of what makes a DVD a DVD. When you record on mini-DV you are recording to an already compressed format. Arguably a very good compressed format but compressed nonetheless. This means information is being tossed at the point you are using the camcorder. iDVD, or any DVD authoring app on any computer, Windoze or Mac, compresses this material even further into the MPEG 2 format for playback via a tabletop DVD player. Now mini-DV has about 30 frames per second (NTSC). MPEG (in a very basic nutshell) takes a picture about twice every 30 frames and uses this as a reference frame and then only records the motion difference between that reference frame and the next time it creates a reference frame. So you go from 30 frames/second to TWO, with motion difference! This is how one hour of DV which is 13 gigs, can be compressed to fit onto one DVD. Two hours would be 26 gigs of DV compressed to one DVD! Hence the general quality difference between one-hour and two. And keep in mind that is compression will show artifacts that may have always been there but you didn’t see until the other 28 frames where tossed out. Slow motion can also be very difficult to encode. I have found that going under 50% slow-motion is problematic. One work around is to create your slow-motion sequence and send it back to tape and then re-import from the tape. Now it is no longer a software effect but an actual 29.97 fps clip. Clips with a lot of motion, quick pans & zooms, hand held shots and so on, will also suffer more artifacts because the whole frame is in motion and thus difficult to encode. Which is why a tripod is recommended to keep the frame steady!
Just some thoughts… welcome to the Discussions!

  • I have a Power Mac G4. I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I get an error message stating it doesn't recognize the disc and an error

I have a Power Mac G4 with OX 10.4.11.  I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I've gotten two different sets of messages.  One states that
the disc is not readable and an error code: 0x8002006D.  The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025.
What is going on?  I need to burn discs immediately for a conference next week.

"The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025."
The error (0x80020025) refers to an unsupported drive (not disk).  I've read about relaunching the Finder to correct the problem.  Choose "Force Quit" from the Apple Menu and then choose "Finder." Click "Relaunch" and see if the drive still produces the error.  If there's no change, I'd be tempted to replace the drive.

  • Account Specific Apple DVD Player Audio Problem

I accidently went reverse with the wrong "sticky key" locked during a dvd. (I thought I'd pressed "command-arrow")
Since this I have no audio on any  video when using the  DVD Player software IN THIS ACCOUT ONLY.
After restarting both the DVD player and the Mac with no success, I switched user accounts, and continued watching said dvd with no problem. Switching back, still no sound.
Clearly I created an error in my user account prefs. In the past, an easy fix.  But where do I find the user library/prefs in Mountain Lion?

    Hi Chris,
    Found the "easy" approach..
    A) Hold Option while selecting the Go Menu while in the Finder. The User Library shows as "Library".
    B) Keep holding Option as you select Library.  (If using Sticky Keys, this means lock the Option Key at point A.)
TADA! The user library is opened before one's eyes.
From there, I switched user accounts via fast user switching, repeated the above.  Next I copied the DVD Player folder in Application Support to an external drive, switched back, and replaced the corrupted user folder by copying the one on the external drive.
Sound has returned to the DVD Player!  It was likely one file, but none popped out at me, so I just replaced the entire file.

  • Powerbook G4 12" 867mhz with dvd/cd drive problems - please help!

    Hello all,
Just realized this thread should have been in this section. I put it in the using your powerbook section. Sorry for the double post. I just wanted it to be in the right section.
I have just inherited a powerbook g4 from a family member who is upgrading to a new machine. It has dvd/cd drive problems. I'm totally new to OSX and a notebook machine and need some assistance. I've been briefly scanning the forums here and noticed problems with these drives on the model computer. Is there a way to fix this with an install of older software? Here is the problem, if I insert a cd into the super drive it mounts on the desktop, and itunes will play it but it skips and sounds very distorted. I haven't tried a dvd but was told it doesn't even see the dvds on the desktop. Here are the know specs on the machine:
    867mhz
    640 mb ram
    mac os x 10.5.1
    boot rom version 4.5.5f4
the burner info: matshita dvd r uj-015
    firmware version: docb
    Thanks in advance!

    Good Morning Mac,
According to your posted specs for the 12" G4PB you have the bare minimum requirements for Leopard. Even Tiger (10.4.11) should have 1GB RAM for decent performance (see my signature specs).
An easily installed 1GB RAM stick can be obtained at either of these reliable vendors:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/ or http://www.crucial.com/
However, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Try the following in this order:
Repair Disk Permissions with /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair DP, then do the following:
Run Repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk ........
Insert disk and re-start holding down the 'C' key until you see the spinning gear.
At Installer level...... DO NOT CONTINUE
At top left, use 'Utilities' Menu for Tiger or later and go 'Disk Utility'
Select your HD volume with Operating system on...
Select First Aid tab then select Repair Hard Disk button
If "RED" errors are repaired, run again, until none are reported then +run again+ just to be sure you are OK
Do NOT continue with the Installer... QUIT the Installer and return to the Finder ......... Eject the Disc
RESTART ..... Repair Disk Permissions .... AGAIN!
Try the above stuff first .... if that doesn't help, we will get into the "RESETS" steps next!

  • I have a macbook pro OSX 10.5.8. My DVD player software 5.0.3 plays all DVDs without a problem. When I load a DVD from Netflix it shows that "the supported disc not available" on the blank, black screen?

I contacted Netflix. They are unfamiliar with this problem. Anyone have any experience with this problem

I have the same problem. I put a Dexter dvd from Netflix in my Macbook pro 0sx leopard. Nothing happened. Dvd player did not recognize the disk. To check whether the Dexter dvd was damaged, I put the dvd in my PC and it worked without any problems. I then put another dvd disk (Kubrick's Shining) in my Macbook and it worked fine, so there must be something in the Dexter dvd that messes up the Macbook. I've seen other posts specifically citing that the Dexter dvds do not work on the Macbook. This looks to me like a Showtime problem.

  • OS 10.7.2 thinks Data DVD is blank, but it isn't!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro and I've encountered a baffling problem.  A data DVD (containing multiple PDF's) shows up as a blank writable disc on this computer.  I decided to run Parallels with Windows 7 (on the same MBP) and the disc showed up with all the files intact.  So I figured it wasn't a hardware problem.  Then I tried the same DVD in my older macbook (2008 model) and Mac Pro desktop (both with OS 10.6) and the disc works perfectly.  So it's not a general mac problem either, it appears to be a 10.7 Lion problem.  I then uninstalled Parallels and Toast just incase they were to blame...no luck.  I have tried other data DVD's in my new MBP and they work perfectly, so I tried to figure out what format was messing with Lion.  Using Snow Leopard, Toast & my old Macbook here are my findings regarding the format of the culprit DVD:
    Medium Type: DVD-R
    Space used: 4.38 GB
    Diameter: 120 mm
    Layers: single
    Manufacturer ID: RITEKF1
    Content:
    Title: Feb 22 2011
    Content Type: Data
    File System: UDF
    Tracks: 2
    Sessions: 2
    Details:
    Session 1 Start=0, Size 1.16GB
    Track 1 Start=0, Size 1.16 GB
    UDF  Feb 22 2011
    UDF revision 2.01
    Session 2 (open), Start= 645216, Size = open
    Track 2 Start = 645216, Size = 3.15 GB
    UDF  Feb 22 2011
    UDF revision 2.01
So as you can see it's a mutisession DVD, which you cannot create under Lion but you should be able to read it.  It's also UDF format, etc.  Does anything else look fishy?
Anyway, I brought the MBP to the genius bar today and showed him my findings.  I tried the disc in his MBP and it also apperaed to be a blank writable DVD. He believes it is a Lion bug and had nothing more to say.  Any thoughts from the techies out there?  Anyone have a similar experience?  I would love to have my results duplicated so that I can make apple aware of this bug.  Thanks all!
    My specs:
MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    OS 10.7.2

I have a Mac Mini (Fall 2010) which I bought in 2011. I just tried the DVD last week, and it doesn't work. Im trying to burn image to DVD and nothing happens.
Ive tried Disk Utility, the New Burn Folder feature, Toast, and other programs. The optical drive is just dead. WHen I first bought my computer they came back to me and said that the one I bought didnt work, and gave me a new one. Seems this was part of the same scheme.
There are many different ways to burn, and many different kinds of files, so it can seem difficult, however, the disk utility and the New Burn Folder are easy, but nothing works. The drive just spins, holds it for minutes, and then spits it out, or doesnt, and only rebooting and holding the Eject Button, or the Mouse button down, works to eject the disk.
Solutions may have worked for people wanting to burn Music, but that's not what I want to do. In addition, this has nothing to do with the brand of DVD-RW we use, or not, I've tried over 5, and others have tried all the other versions.
Likewise, Im running 1.6.8 and not Lion, but Lion people are having problems also.
Of course my warranty is over, and I never tried burning DVDs before this.
Do we have to start a Save our Systems movement to get notice, camped out in front of the Genius stores? Im sorry, but Im tired of dishing out money for what appears to be really inferior products. My friends Mac Pro actually exploded! My last HD died. My computer before that also had to be replaced. What gives? Maybe it really is the fact that Apple products are being made in China, and we, the consumers, are paying the price, literally and figuratively.

  • CD-rw/DVD rom drive problem

I am using IBM T43 type 1871 laptop. The problem is with my CD drive. It automatically ejects out  every time it wants to.
The same won't happen if I put some CD in the drive. But the CD won't play properly as the system shows the autoplay often and in "my computer " the drive is shown blank for some time and after the autoplay the CD name would be given...
Is it the problem with software or hardware???
Can it be solved if I buy a new DVD drive or use an external??
Now I've removed the drive in order to evade this problem...
    Please help me???

    Hello,
I am assuming your ThinkPad T43 has a DVD±RW disc drive.  Is that correct?
If so, can it read stamped (manufactured) CDs and DVDs?  If it can, than the problem may be with reading the recordable CDs or DVDs that you are using.  If not, than the problem could be a software one (i.e., related to the operating system) or a hardware one.
If you have a bootable CD or DVD, try configuring the ThinkPad to first boot from the DVD drive, and then attempt to boot from the disc.  If that works, than you are likely dealing with a software problem.  If the ThinkPad doesn't recognize the disc even at bootup, then the problem is likely with the DVD drive and it will need to be replaced.

  • Dvd - 1260 - Door Problem

    Hi
i am having some problem with this devise
it`s been a while that i am having this problem and the problem is that
I can`t open Door with the button when there is nothing in it ... i mean i can open it with whole(so that mean the motor is fine)
but when there is nothing in dvd drive it just won`t open ... dosen`t matter how many time i push this button
but whenever there is some Dvd/cd On it ... it will open just fine ... i am wondering what the problem is ?
and sometimes when i push the button if i move the fron a littile it will open by chanse ... there is nothing wrong with my power cable/data Cable or Bus setup
by the way my win is 7 built 7600 .. up to date
and i have clonecd ... and ashampoo BS.
any tought would help me trough
and if u can help me how to change the front cover i`d appreciate that

    The solution:
Probably a combination of previously posted suggestions.
A Memorex DVD laser lens cleaner disc didn't help.
A standard Office Depot cleaner disc didn't help.
I tried using canned air to blow out the dust and got to where I could burn a blank disc to a point.
A new error message popped up before the final burn:
"This disc did not verify correctly and is unreliable. Because this disc is unreliable, discard it and try again using a new, blank disc. (Error code 0x80020063)"
Took out the unburned disc (a standard Memorex) and placed in a higher-quality (Taiyo Yuden, which I use for my video production) disc.
    Voilà!
To make sure, I tried a new Memorex disc and had the same error message.
Then, used a new Taiyo disc and everything is good!
So, I guess part of the problem was a dirty laser lens and the otehr part was probably using cheap media.
This is not to say that you will be able to get the same results.
Sometimes, those "superdrives" are D.O.A. and need to be replaced.
Fortunately that wasn't the case in my issue.

  • DVD-RW  formating problem ?

Hi ALL, funny problem i have, a friend of mine gave me a CD full of Wedding photos, he asked me to put them onto a brand-new DVD-RW+ disc, easy job i thought. I copied all the photos to a folder on my Hard Drive, inserted a blank DVD-RW+, selected all the photos, right click and burn to disc, JOB DONE !
Trouble was the DVD didnt work in his Sony DVD Player (connected to his TV) !!!! He tried other Photo Disc's that i previuosly burnt for him, using Snow Leopard these were OK !.
I took these disc's home to load into my Mac Book Pro, i could then see that the most recent Disc's were "Mac OS Extended" the older disc's, that did work, were "ISO 9660"
So now i can ask the question, Please how do i Burn files to a DVD-RW+ disc and make it "ISO 9660"  ???
    Tim

I'm sure there's a way to do it with Mac OS but I just like using one of the many free disc burning tools out there
