DVD-R drive reads, then whirringnoise/disk slowdown, then drive stops??

Happens when reading info. off DVD media, and happens when trying to copy media contents to hard drive. Needs a hard restart to eject DVD.
Bad disk, perhaps??

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
Firmware Revision: KB19

I seem to have the same problem as RichardHead. However I just wanted to post additional problems to see if maybe I am experiencing a possible Drive dirt/failure.
The Drive in question is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 on my Macbook Pro 15 unibody. I received it in September 2009 and not sure how the warranty works to possibly replace the drive as I have tried lens cleaners and still no go.
Basically the exact thing happens as RichardHead. When I insert most any media it spins and slows then spins and slows. Wether I try and install Adobe Master Collection for MAC or even tried Win 7 for Bootcamp I can get no disc to work or even recognized. Is there maybe a firmware I could try before I subject myself to the Genius Bar? I dont hate the Genius Bar but here in my area you have to sign up a day in advance because it is so busy.
This alos may be off topic a little but speaking of Win 7 for bootcamp. Is there and alternative way to install it besides the cd rom or external cd rom? Obviously my internal is crap and I did try an external CD ROM and it doesn't work all that well. Halfway through it mucks up which I am sure that CD ROM is crapped out also Its a Gear Head Mobile Slim Drive. I would prefer to use USB. Any ideas? Thank you.

I have hp dv9810us notebook running vista home premium and my dvd/cd drive stopped working. Doesn't even show up in Devive Manager. Before I started trying stuff I was wondering if this a common problem with a easy fix. thanks

Fairly common, but, usually, no easy fix.
Some things to try in this post:

I have the same notebook and also lost my dvd drive.  My problem resulted from the nvidia graphics problem.  Google "defective nvidia gpu" if you are not familar with this.
Mine died three months after I lost the drive, but I revived it with a pseudo reflow method by baking my motherboard @ 385 degres F.  My dvd drive is back and the laptop runs noticeably cooler.
    Good luck

  • My DVD/CD drive stopped burning discs and I have heard that if I used a DVD/CD lens cleaner that it might help... does anybody have any knowledge or recommendations on this subject?

I would appreciate any info on this because I haven't been able to burn any disks for quite a while.  Before it completely went out of service, it worked every other time I tried to burn a disk.
    Thanks!
    Erik

I fixed it.  I read one of the other posts that suggested compressed air in the drive and it worked.  I just burned my first DVD in months!!!!  Thanks anyways!

  • T60 HDD res. partition, USB ports and DVD-RAM drive no longer recognizing data/media!

I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
One day everything was working fine.  Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup.  When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange).  It behaves like there is no media in the drive.  Cannot boot with that drive either.
In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well.  None of them work on this T60 anymore.
When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine.  So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps?  I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail.  Please help.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.

  • " DVD RW Drive " is not reading / writing DVD. It can read only CD.

" DVD RW Drive "  is not reading / writing DVD.
The same DVD can be read on my frnds laptop.
Corresponding drivers r up to date.. I even tried uninstall and then restart and then let my laptop install the required driver automatically. I've tried everything I could find on some forums.
I was told to delete " Upper & Lower filters ". I didnt find Lower filter so I had to delete only "Upper Filter".
    Plz assist me..
I will be waiting for ur kind reply.
    Thank u so much.

The upper and lower filter thing only applies if the drive is not showing up at all in the Device Manager. If it appears as a drive and will perform any function at all, then it is likely a hardware issue. One way you can be sure is to try to boot from a bootable DVD such as a Windows 7 install Disk. If the computer will not boot from such a disk then it is apparent the hardware is defective, not the Windows software because the problem exists even before Windows loads.
The drive has multiple lasers and it is possible for one to go out but not the others.  The drive is easily replaced. See below:
This eBay seller ships worldwide. You would have to transplant your plastic drive face but that is very easy to do:

  • CD/DVD Optical drive appears and then disappears, replacement also does not show up

    My laptop: HP Pavilion dv9601AU
I have read a similar post here but my problem is different. My problem is that the DVD drive *sometimes* show up in My Computer and *sometimes* dont. Even the BIOS does not detect it.  When I formatted my laptop with Windows 7, to my surprise it was gone. But it appeared again and I somehow installed all the required drivers from my driver DVD.... then it dissapered again. It never came back.
Failed attempt 1: I tried to re-format the PC using virtual drive but the problem persists.
Failed attempt 2: Thinking it to be a physical loose connection, I took it to local HP service station, they removed the drive, put it back firmly, but in vain.
Failed attempt 3: They attached other similar optical drive but to my surprise, the new drive was also not detected.
Failed attempt 4: I tried Microsoft's "Fix It" thing and also read about removing "upper filters" and "lower filters" in registry. However, I didnt have any of those filters entry in the first place so no question about making changes to the registry.
    Facts:
    1) The drivers are installed. There should not be any problem with the drivers.
    2) The lens is perfect. I was able to install all the drivers from DVD when the drive appeared for a short period of time.
    3) The HP logo tht appears upon starting the laptop lingers for a longer period of time compared to what it was doing so when the drive was fine.
    4) The boot menu does not show the optical drive.
    5) I live in India where normal room temperatures go upto 42 degrees Celcius and my laptop gets much much warm most of the times. I think some damage has been done to the internal circuitry.
Please, if somebody can provide me a solution to this. How can I get back my DVD Drive working. The support personnel here are having no clue (especially after learning the fact that their new optical drive also didnt show up) I hope I get some guidance from you guys as what should I do next. Please help me.

I am having the exact same problem with my customer's dvd drive sometimes showing up during boot (BIOS) and sometimes not. Also ran full system diagnostic software and everything else tests fine, although the drive is not showing present. I have also tried 2 different drives but they do the same thing. I would go on to say that if you always left the dvd drive out of the laptop, your boot problems would probably go away. This would then tell you that it's not your drive at all, but the connections on the MOBO or the traces (wires) connecting the drive to the MOBO.
I work on computers and have for several years and most times this is related to a MOBO issue since that is the only item left in this situation. You know it's not the drive since it's been replaced with the same issue so drivers/firmware are not the case. I am assuming you have already updated the BIOS as well,  but this shouldn't matter. There could be a dirty contact, faulty component, or a bad trace (wire) on the MOBO which is almost always harder to fix and is better to just replace the MOBO. However, replacing the MOBO is usually expensive when you have to buy the part and then pay someone to install it making it not usually the best option. Even if it is a dirty contact, it was probably caused by something that was spilled which could cause problems later. In this case, I am probably just going to recommend disabling the internal dvd drive and buying a slim external usb dvd drive, and then saving their money for a new laptop. You will still have to wait through a slower boot while staring at the HP screen, but I don't think replacing the MOBO is the most economical thing to do, unless you are the manufacturer and have several laying around.
I know this isn't good news, but it is what I've found to be the case in my experiences. Anybody else care to chime in?

  • Dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk,

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • DVD/RW drive not reading DVDs

I have an HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium 32 bit, with a LightScribe DVD/RW SuperMulti drive.  I am able to read/burn audio CD's (both commercial and CD-R/RW).  But, I have tried 4 different DVD movie discs, and every time, the drive spins and tries to read, but then nothing happens, and when I try to go to Start/Computer/DVD drive and "Explore" or "Open", the drive tray ejects and a window pops up saying "Please insert a disc".  So, it seems that the DVD/RW drive is simply not able to read DVD movie discs.  Any idea if this is a driver problem, or do I need to replace the DVD/RW drive?
    Thanks,

  • Reinstalling from Tiger Disk without a DVD/CD drive

I have an iBook g4 with a missing dvd/cd drive. I have my Tiger installation disk i want to use to create a clean reinstall of Tiger. What's the best way to achieve this?

You could install the OS on the computer with the missing optical drive via Target Disc Mode from another firewire enabled computer. Shut down the iBook with the missing optical drive. Connect both computers with a firewire cable. Start the iBook while pressing and holding the 'T' key until you see the firewire symbol on a blue background. Insert your install DVD into the other computer with the working optical drive and restart that computer holding down the 'C' key until the gray screen with Apple logo appears. Begin the installation procedure until you get to the "select the volume to install OS X" and select your iBook drive. Then just proceed with the installation.
After your installation is complete, drag the iBooks hard drive image that is mounted on your desktop to the trash. Shut down the iBook by holding the power button down for a few seconds, then disconnect the firewire cable and power up your iBook. You should be in business! Remember to do all of your updates after the install with Software Update. You can actually do that even before you leave target disc mode from your other computer if you'd like.
Oh.. one more thing. before you shut down or restart your helper computer (the one with the working optical drive), go to system preferences and select startup disk. Choose that computers drive to restart the computer.
    Hope that helps!

  • DVD+R not reading back on some DVD-ROM drives

The recording device is the built-in SuperDrive on my iBook G4 1.42. I've been archiving copies of my photos to recordable DVD. It's usually 2 copies of each set - one in DVD+R and one in DVD-R. I store each set in a different place.
My preferred media is (Made in Japan) Taiyo-Yuden media sold under the FujiFilm and Sony label. So far, the spindles I've opened and used are the FujiFilm (8x-listed) DVD+R (regular silver label) and DVD-R (from the "Color Tower" package).
The DVD-R recordings seem to read back fine in most DVD-ROM drives I've tried. I have a circa 2001 PC with a DVD-ROM drive, and it doesn't read back the DVD+R copies. It'll just whirr for about 20 seconds and then just stop without the disc mounting. All DVD recordings seem to read back just fine on my iBook G3 600.
Are there any known problems with readback of DVD+R recorded from OS X on some DVD-ROM drives? I figure I'm eventually going to get an external drive that also records DVD+R (I'm thinking that would present the fewest compatibility problems) or a new machine (it's about time after five years).
    14 iBook G4 1.42 1.5GB (10.4.3), 12 iBook G3 600 640MB (10.3.9)

Just a note of interest. If your machine is 2001
vintage, my guess it doesn't like + media at all.
There are some reports that in some cases that these
older drives can read them sporaticlly at best, this
is normally caused by the poor quality of some
    manufactures.
It's a Sony VAIO desktop with a Pioneer DVD-ROM drive. I don't know about "quality" per se, but it probably finicky.
I find that using the best quality media eliminates
many problems. And I realise that it is more
expensive to use this media but in the long run it's
    worth the extra money.
Have a look at the Media Guide below.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    Cheers Don
Like I said - Taiyo Yuden all the way unless it's maybe sometime like video storage where it's no big deal. I just got three spindles of MIJ (had to look carefully for that) Sony 16x DVD-R for $12.99 each at CompUSA. They didn't have it on sale, but they price-matched the $12.99 price at Best Buy (my local store only had made in Taiwan stock). I was next to the manager at the customer service area, and she said I could have as many as I wanted at that price. If it were some expensive item, I think I would have been limited to one or two.

  • USB Floppy Drive That Can Read 2-DD Disks?

I need to access some info from some 2-DD floppies, and I got a Sony MPF88E for this purpose. Although it says in the manual it can read these disks, it doesn't; I put the disk in, it sounds like it's spinning, and then stops, without displaying an icon, and Disk Utility doesn't see anything there. The drive was able to read an HD floppy just fine. I told this to Sony and they said it should read 2-DDS, so it must be defective. I got another drive with the same result. Also, I tried two different 2-DD floppies each time with the same result.
Interestingly, I went looking for another drive and see the SmartDisk 2x floppy drive on the Apple Store, but one reviewer says it doesn't read 2-DD disks: http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/T8169LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&p=1&s=topSellers
I can probably pick up a Quadra or something for the price of a drive, but for convenience sake (I've got boxes full of floppies I'd like to archive and get rid of), I'd really like a USB drive.
I also see a Lacie floppy drive out there with favorable reviews except that it's "slow," which for floppies is something you kinda have to live with, but it's a "1x" drive, and I wonder if this spec might have anything to do with its reading ability? The Sony and the SmartDisk are both "2x."
Can anyone recommend a USB floppy drive that can definitely read 2-DD disks?
    Thanks!

I can tell you that the LaCie drive with a mechanism by Y-E Data definitely has the same problem. I first tried using it yesterday and couldn't get it to read any of the disks I wanted to use. I contacted LaCie, and their tech had no idea what the problem was. This morning, I tried all the disks I have lying around and two worked like a charm. I thought it had something to do with brand until I realized they were both HD disks and the rest were DD disks. Y-E blames it on the lack of capability in the Apple Driver in OSX, but either way, I still can't read my DD disks in 10.5.6.

  • DVD/ CDROM Drive is not reading or burning discs

My DVD/ CD Rom Drive has stopped reading discs of any format.
I have tried to update the driver and have been told that I am running the most recent available. Following some research online I understand that it may be something to do with the recent upgrade of iTunes and that it causes some conflict with the device driver.
I have deleted the Upper and Lower Registries as advised by Microsoft but this also hasn't assisted me. I know the system is connecting to the hardware as it thinks the device "is working correctly", but it just isn't finding the discs.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

    Hey,
Ok, your notebook isnt able to read or burn disks but what does this mean exactly?
Is your drive listed in device manager?
=> You could try to remove it and restart your notebook.
Do you see yellow exclamation marks in device manager on ODD?
=> Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Its known issue.
Do you get an error message if you try bruning a disk?
=> Try another burning program like CD Burner XP
Have you checked the Toshiba website for a firmware update?
    Which OS you are using?
As you can see, a lot of not answered question they would be important to help you.

  • Hello ,my dvd rw driver (f:) in my hp pavilion dv7-3186cl entertainment notebook can not read cd's o

Hello ,My DVD RW Driver (F, in my HP Pavilion dv7-3186cl Entertainment Notebook PC / Operating System 64-bit, after installing new hardware ( printer ) can not read CD’s or DVD’s is not working ,How can I fix it?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the relevant link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

I'm even getting a lag when typing.  After deciding to do a full restore, I have found the DVD Rom drive won't recognize any media, and won't burn.  If I can't get the drive to work, how the frak am I supposed to do a full restore?  Short of throwing this thing into the river, any suggestions on where to proceed?
