DVD-R is soooooo slow

I'm attempting to burn DVDs using Toast 7 Titanium and my built in Matshita DVD-R UJ835-F. It's been taking over 4 hours to burn one DVD with about 2 hours of video on it. I've finally narrowed it down to the following problem.
I have Toast set at 16x DVD recording but when I put in the blank DVD the settings change to 'Best' and then I'm only left with to other options, 1x DVD and 2x DVD. The DVD's I am using are genuine Sony DVD-R's which quite clearly say they support 16 x recording mode.
Any clues would be gratefully received.
Thanks

er, I don't have a Powerbook
Sorry… I got all confused as to where I was.
The majority of the time seems to be spent 'encoding'. Is that not part of the burning process? Apologies for the ignorance if that's the case.
What Toast 6 does when you do not do a straight data burn is to convert the original data into the data type of which you are burning. So, if you are burning an AVI file and want it to be burnt as a DVD-ROM then Toast must first encode the AVI file to a DVD style VIDEO_TS directory, which includes video encoding. This does take time. I'm not sure exactly the process order is for Toast 7 but it too much reencode your video data. This is more than likely the source of your burning slowdowns.
To accurately check the burn speed of your drive try burning a DVD that is pre-encoded in the right format. For instance, instead of burning the AVI file directly, save it to a disc image first, then, burn the created disc image.

  • Qosmio G20 CD/DVD burning is very slow at 4x max

i have used philips CDs and DVDs but they are slow, the DVDs burn but the CDs don't. should i use a different brand of disks like TDK. i cannot increase the recording speed either.
Is my MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-845S DAMAGED, do i need to replace it? i have looked on the internet and many people have the same problem with the same drive.

    Hi
Wait you can burn DVDs but its not possible to burn the CDs?
Ok it sounds like an hardware malfunction but before you will replace the device you should try to burn different CD. Test the CDs form different manufacturers.
    You have suggested using TDK?
I use the TDK CD and DVD and my drive burns everything successfully.
Anyway, if you still be not able to burn CDs I assume the lens cannot calibrates and therefore the drive cannot write on the CD.
In such case the drive must be replaced ;(

  • Satellite A105-S2031: DVD/CD plays to slow like slow motion

Hi, my A105 - S2031 has CD/DVD combo TS-L462C. If I play a CD or DVD, everyting is too slow like a slow motion.
Does anyone could help me how I can fix this? Or is this a mechanical error of the CD/DVD combo?
Thanks for anybody's help in advance, Michael

    First of all we should clarify if this is software or a hardware issue;
In such case it would be advisable to test the notebook with factory settings
I think you should use the Toshiba recovery CD and should restore the unit back to the Toshiba factory settings.
Usually the movies should run smoothly without any troubles using the right applications like WinDVD for example.
If some troubles will appear then a graphic driver update could be advisable but if this will not help then an ASP should be contacted and the notebook should be checked.

  • My computer is running soooooo slow!

I use both Safari and Chrome and in both OS everything runs slow. I can leave the room after closing out a program and to go to another room and back and maybe the program will be closed by then. I ran the etrecheck but I am not well versed in computer talk.  I can however follow directions if there is anyone out there who could help.  Here is the etrecheck report.  Lots of red but that is just something to be "noticed".  Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

For the way you are using your computer, more RAM might help. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • DVD Pro Is EXREMELY SLOW  and slow system

I am running DVD Pro Studio on a PowerMac G5 with 4 meg of RAM
It is painfully slow... the inspector freezes when I try to show shapes..
loading assets in stills (granted they are big files) is beyond painful
frankly I went to a mac to do just this..

... loading assets in stills (granted they are big files)
If your sytem is being slowed up by large graphics - which DVD SP doesn't like - try making them the right size first.
4:3 stills (with linear pixels) only need to be 768 x 576 pixels [PAL], or 640 x 480 pixels for NTSC, which should only require between 1 and 2 MB. Convert to 720 x 576 [PAL] TV pixels, or 720 x 480 [NTSC] TV pixels.

  • Dvd Audio playback is slow and with pops sou

Hi, i have just got a dvd audio (night at the opera from queen ) and i want to enjot the high quality of this fromat, but with creative media source dvd audio player there's a problem in playback, i can see the lists of the song, select it, but when it plays, there's a pop sound and it's in slow play, there's a second that it plays normal but then it causes the same problem.
i have test it with windvd v6 and gives the same problem.
by the way the sample dvd disc from creative, plays normal. really it's amazing that sound.
I have read many reviews about the copy protection issue, and i think that's the problem, i don't if anyone of you, have played the queen dvd audio?.
the version of the media source dvd audio player is .50.08.
Where can i dowload the latest version of the dvd audio player. i think the last one is .52.04, but i can't find in creative web site an upgrade for this version on the dvd audio media player.
my sound card is Audigy 2 zs internal sound card. and i have the latest drivers and aplicaciones from creative web site upgraded

    Hi,
I have the same problem since December 2011 with a similar Mainboard (Asus M4A78T-E).
    Did you resolve your problem?
    Thanks

  • DVD-Drive is too slow on Satellite A100-507

the dvd-drive mat****a dvd-ram uj-841s of my satelite a100-507 is too slow. (~1000 Kb/s - much too slow to watch a movie - and it dosn't depend on the player.)
the technical specifications of the manufacturer is 8x read + write for DVDs, even i can write DVDs up to 2.4x
is this a software problem? (i'm using Windows XP)

    Hi
Are you not able to watch DVD on your notebook or what is the problem?
I have investigated a little bit and found some drive specifications:
    Maximum read speed:
    CD-ROM 24xMax
    DVD-ROM 8xMax
    Maximum write speed:
    CD-R 24xMax
    CD-RW 4xMax
    HS CD-RW 10xMax
    US CD-RW 10xMax
    US+ CD-RW N/A
    DVD-R 8xMax
    DVD-R(Double Layer) 2xMax
    DVD-RW 4xMax
    DVD+R 8xMax
    DVD+R(Double Layer) 2.4xMax
    DVD+RW 4xMax
    DVD-RAM 5xMax
So you info about 8x read + write for DVDs is not exactly true. It depends on the DVD medium.
Additionally its important to mention that these are the max values.
Sometimes the drive reads or writes with lower speed. It depends on a cache status.

  • Why is the USB download soooooo slow?  I see this frequently on other forums.  What's the fix?

I am trying to copy the bootcamp utilities to a usb drive so that windows device drivers can be updated.  The download is very slow - in fact, it looks like its halted.  Its been running for 2 hours.   Is there a work-around for this?  An alternative site to ge the file?

Assuming you need the BootCamp 5.Drivers
Just download and unzip the file  at http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1638/en_US/BootCamp5.0.5033.zip which is Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033
Burm the contents to a DVD or Flash Drive
Then insert the DVD or Flash Drive in Windows and run setup as an administrator.

  • Why is my import from DVD-R going soooo SLOW??

OK, I'm very new in the Mac world and am still trying to move my photos from my PC. I burned all of the photos to a DVD-R using the Kodak gallery program. I have 3 DVDs of photos.
Now I am in the process of importing into iPhoto. I opened iPhoto, inserted the DVD #1, and then selected import to library. The first thousand photos imported fine, but the last hundred or so have taken FOREVER...like several minutes per photo.
Should I let this just go overnight, or stop the import and try again?
Has anyone ever experienced this slowness when importing from DVD?
    Thanks!
    CC

    CC:
You would be better off copying the files to a folder on the desktop and then into iPhoto as copying from a disk the file first has to be copied to a temp file and then into iPhoto. I don't know how far you are in the current disk import but for the future ones I'd definitely copy to a folder first and then into iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Burn Speed for DVD mastering - fast or slow

Please help! I am getting conflicting advice regarding the best speed to burn a DVD Video (in DVDSP, iDVD, Disk Utility etc) that will be used as a duplication master. I have read online that you should avoid slowing down the burn too much (I think because the disc dyes etc are 'optimised' for faster speeds) and that you will run into problems if you burn an 8x disc at 1 or 2x. However, a technician assures me that you should slow the burn right down and that professional duplicators and production houses never burn a DVD at its rated speed! Who is correct? Any help or links appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Ian
I have read online that you should avoid slowing down the burn too much (I think because the disc dyes etc are 'optimised' for faster speeds) and that you will run into problems if you burn an 8x disc at 1 or 2x.
The general advice around here is burning at slow speeds to avoid playback problems. DVDSP will allways burn at max speed and that's one of the reasons for NOT using that burning workflow. I allways create a disc image of my project and burn it with Toast and/or Disk Utility, where you can select the burn speed.
After all, you can ask to your duplicator what they prefer.
    Hope that helps !

  • SONY DVD RW DW-D150A slows down????

I have been movie a library of drum samples onto my computer, and the first DVD of 7.81 gb of samples transfered in about 11 minutes. Every other DVD transfers in about 45 minutes. Why would it slow down? All of the DVDs are equal size and its really bothering me.

you could flash the firmware of that sad optical Sony to that of NEC which it is anyway and probably have better performance. The situation you describe is not abnormal you could just do a re-start and avoid it.

  • P965 neo-f, DVD-ROM is really slow

    Specs:
    Intel E6300 Core 2 Duo (no over-clocking)
    MSI P965 Neo-f (latest bios, v1.50)
    1Gb DDR2 RAM
    ATI X800PRO 256mb
    160GB HDD
    DVD-ROM
I'm having a few problems with this new set up. All optical drives that I have used with this computer are REALLY slow. I'm not exactly sure what is causing this problem but I do know that in the Device Manager this IDE drive is currently in PIO mode and will not change. I have a exact same DVD-Rom in another PC which is running in Ultra DMA 5 mode. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I had exactly the same problem on a friends system I just finished putting together but finally got it working.
On one of the first couple of Windows boots I installed Jmicron "RAID" drivers from the motherboard CD, no I'm not running RAID, basically I had everything set up and going when I noticed DVD installs were taking forever and then realised that any sort of data transfer from optical was taking forever, yep PIO stuck on in device manager.
Reboot, enter bios, under the SATA/RAID PIO and DMA settings in the BIOS change the bottom setting from IDE to Disable, boot to windows.
Obviously anything on IDE are now not working (don't ask me how you get around this if you don't have Windows on SATA  ) uninstall Jmicron bizzo from add remove programs, reboot, enter BIOS and switch that setting back to IDE, reboot, Windows should detect and install and everything should be peachy, hope it works for you cause this one had me tearing my hair out

  • Nested Tables select query soooooo slow

I know that varrays are supposed to be used for small arrays. But, we are comparing nested tables to varrays and two table joins. Nested table query is unimaginably ,unacceptably slow.
Is there anybody else out there who experienced the same thing. Are there ways to speed up the select queries.(besides indexes)

If you try to use nested sql statement. Please be sure to setup the index to some specific tables inside oracle
Doing this will speed up your performance about 5 ~ 9 times original.

  • CS4 soooooo slow!

I have just upgraded to CS4 (from CS3) and also bought new workstations. The new computer is an HP Z800 dual quad core, with 6 GB RAM, Nvidia FX4800 graphics card running Vista Business 64 bit. I am currently trying to work on and render a 30" tvc created in CS3 (on an older HP).
This particular project used to take 14 minutes to render (without multi processing turned on) on the old machine which was 32 bit with 3 GB RAM running Windows XP Professional. I am now attempting to render the same project on the new system (I've given up on multiprocessing for now) and the same project takes at least 2.5 hours to render (if I'm lucky enough to get througt it - the program usually hangs indefinitelyor crashes) ! We're about to tear our hair out.
I've re-installed CS3 onto the new HP Workstation system and it works as it used to. So what is going on with CS4? EVERYTHING about it is sooo slow. Even saving a project takes 15 seconds or so, whereas before I'd miss it if I blinked.
I've done all the updates, read a lot of the forums and read me's, but to no avail. In fact I have 2 suites now running this new configuration and both suites are experiencing the identical problems. Productivity is grindingly slow and staff losing patience.
Before I go and spend a lot more money on a lot of RAM does anyone know why such a great product has suddenly tuned into a dog?
    Thanks, Richard

HI TODD & CHRIS, THANKS FOR THE INFO.
I HAVE PINCHED 6GB FROM THE OTHER MACHINE AND NOW HAVE 12 GB INSTALLED INTO 1 MACHINE. IT''S STARTING TO WARM UP...
    2 THINGS I'VE NOTICED THAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND:
    1. WATCHING THE MEMORY ALLOCATION IN THE TASK MANAGER WHILST CS4 IS DOING A RAM PREVIEW WITH SAY 4 PROCESSORS, THE RAM USED BY EACH PROCESSOR GROWS. THE TOP ONE IN THE LIST ALWAYS HAS USES THE MOST RAM AND THEN THE OTHERS LISTED BELOW ARE ABOUT THE SAME. THEY START OUT AT ABOUT 300,000KB EACH AND 'WIND UP' TO ROUGHLY WHAT I ALLOCATED, BUT THIS PROCESS TAKES AT LEAST HALF THE COMPOSITION TO GET THERE...AT WHICH TIME IT SLOWS RIGHT DOWN AGAIN.
THE SAME HAPPENS WHEN RENDERING. AS I TYPE I AM WATCHING 4 PROCESSORS RENDERING WITH 860,000KB ASSIGNED TO EACH, EVEN THOUGH I SET THE AMOUNTS TO 2.8GB IN THE MULTI PROCESSOR SETTINGS. THE RAM ALLOCATION IS SLOWLY GROWING FOR EACH, BUT THE WHOLE THING IS SO SLOW COMPARED TO CS3.
    2. WHEN I HAVE MULTIPROCESSING TURNED OFF, THE MAXIMUM RAM ALLOCATED TO AE IS 2.4GB - EVEN THOUGH THERE'S 12GB AVAILABLE. CAN THIS BE CHANGED?
    ANY THOUGHTS?
    REGARDS
    RICHARD

  • T410 and dvd write speed - very slow

I have  3GB file that I am wanting to burn to a DVD(data disc method).
I have done this in the past under windows XP on my old T60 and it would take around 5-6 minutes.
I am burning this now via Windows 7 on my new T410 and it says it will take 1 hour to do the burn.  The rate is showing 633 KB/second.
Is anyone else seeing this?  Should I be using a different program to burn files to a cd/dvd?

I would check out the power manager settings and see what the drive performance is set to, see if changing it to performance helps anything.  It is possible it is the burning software, but it is also possible the drive itself is being throttled.
