DVD-R not consistenly playing

Is there any conclusion that can be reached by a dvd-r that only sometimes plays in my sony dvd player?
I don't understand why it would work sometimes, not others. Seems like it should either work or not.
Any idea why?

I think I may have found the answer to this problem.
But here are the details of my workflow.
shot on DV
Cut in FCP
exported as self contained mov
authored and encoded in iDVD 4 (still learning dvd sp) - using CBR which is like 7.3 Mbps - it does audio and video encoding.
Saved as disc image
burnt with disc utility at 4x (no other option in disk utility)
used prodisc 8x dvd-r media
no label
pioneer DVD-105
os 10.3.9, cpu is DP 1.25 GB G4
DVD player is older sony S560D
The error message is a C 13:00 error message on my sony dvd player. After doing some online searches, it looks like a problem with the player. Apparently a lot of people have had this problem with this sony model. I just seem to have the problem more frequently when using DVD-R's than professionally replicated discs. But others have had the problem on all discs.
oh well. I guess it's a bit of relief because DVD authoring is nebulous enough for me.
Thanks
Bill

  • Help !! DVD DOES NOT SOUND/PLAY RIGHT WHEN PUT IN PLAYER

    Hello,
I have put together a dvd of slides and music and looks and sound great on the computer when I put the dvd in. The problem is when I go to play it in my dvd player, it not only does not sound good in many areas, but also produces a delay in the picture. It comes up, then kind of refocuses. I have done these before pre iDVD09 period and never had a problem. Is there something I can do? Perhaps a different software program. It is a Christmas present and I'm disappointed in it. Any help would be awesome. I am using 16x HP DVD's and have tried adjusting the speeds in preferences...ex. 4x. Hope someone can help. Thanks !!

Have you tried saving the project at a disk image, mounting the disk image and playing it with DVD Player. That will determine if the problem lies with the encoding or the burning.
Once you're satisfied that the disk image is OK you can burn it with Disk Utility or Toast. me01's mention of the recommended DVD brands is correct except the -R type is recommended.

  • DVD's no longer play in 10.4.11

Both older and newer studio movies no longer play on my MacBook Pro after the last software update and can't figure out why. Thx for any tips.

This is the iDVD forum and iDVD is for CREATING DVDs and NOT for playing them. You use Apple's DVD Player application for that.
Try inserting a DVD - if the DVD Player doesn't automatically launch, go into your applications folder and double click on DVD Player to launch it. If the DVD still doesn't play, go into DVD Player and select File>Open DVD (or something like that).

is this a videoDVD (=can be used in any DVDplayer) => don't hesitate to use the Search-Feature of this board, keywords 'import DVD'
or is this a dataDVD? the, you have to tell us the 'format', specificly the codec of that data, so NOT 'it's avi/mov', but wmv, sorenson, h263, mpeg1/2/4, whatever..
or, tell us the source of that 'video', e.g. what kind/tpye of camera ...

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • DVD will not play on iMac in Bootcamp using Windows 8

I am trying to play a DVD in Windows 8 being run with Bootcamp on my iMac (OSX 10.9). The DVD will not autoplay in Windows. You can see the DVD in the folder view, but can only access the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, not the actual playable DVD. Have tried playing it through the folder view as well as Windows Media also to no avail. Booted down Windows and into Mac OS, and the DVD autoplays just fine. How can I get it to play in Windows mode, as the software we are running for a certain program needs to be accessed constantly before and after the DVD needs to play?

tried the vlc player it's free to download and works better then other players really

  • I've burnt a slideshow of my photos onto a DVD disc but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays ok on my acer laptop. I burnt the same disc with slideshow from my old dell computer

I've burnt a slideshow of my photos on my Apple Mac to a DVD+REW disc but it will not play on my DVD player or on a combined DVD/TV. However it will play on my wife's Acer laptop. I then erased the disc & burned another slideshow from my ancient Dell computer onto the same disc &it played just fine on everything. So it seems the problem ids somewhere in the Apple Mac process. Any ideas?

If you want to play material on a dedicated DVD Video hardware player, you must create a DVD video disc, and you must use a DVD authoring application. The software creates files that the DVD video player can play and will burn them to a recordable DVD disc. Examples of applications are:
Roxio Toast and iSky DVD Creator
Mac's used to be supplied with iDVD authoring software but Apple discontinued it in 2011.
Thanks for that.  Will need to check iSkysoft out.  I am in the process of looking for a VisualHub replacement/backup.  Especially when it comes to ease of use.  Toast is ok.  Just looking for something along the lines of VH.

  • DVD is not playing in my DVD player!

I made a movie in iMovie HD, created a DVD in iDVD, burned it successfully, and now that I try to play it on my DVD player, it is choppy and basically freezes and says "disk error". I can see the title pages and everything looks good, so I'm not sure what's going on. I took it to work and it only played on an old DVD player in someone's office, but not on my computer DVD player, not in other, newer DVD players. I burned the movie on a Maxell DVD-R, which I thought was a good brand. Do you think it has to do with burning speed? As I'm not sure what speed I set the burn for. It does play, however, on the apple DVD Player on my mac, so I know it works at least somewhere! The problem is that I gave this DVD to the bride (I edited her wedding) and she was unable to play it at her home. Any ideas????

    Hi
I burn my DVDs at an as slow speed possibly. This can be set in iDVD08 or by creating
a DiskImage and use Disk Util tool or Roxio Toast™ to burn where speed can be
    set down to x1
Speed is set by the no. on the DVD bought eg x16 and max speed on DVD-burner eg x8
in previous versions of iDVD. So forcing iDVD up to version 6, one has to buy x2 DVDs.
No other way possibly else using another program to do the actual burning.
    I only use Verbatim DVDs
    Only DVD-R (Single Layer)
Read this on iDVD quality = Result
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

I have a Imac G5 with a superdrive and if will play DVD but not CD. Anyway i can fix this?

Two ways that might fix it (the superdrive uses different lasers for CDs and DVDs):

  • DVD's Not Playing....

I have the latest software of Final Cut Pro , Motion , Soundtrack , and DVD Studio Pro. Recently when i have been burning DVD's in DVD Studio Pro the DVD's have not been playing in my home DVD player. The DVD's though play on my Apple G5 flawlessly. I am using the Apple DVD's and tried all of the different laser settings on DVD Studio Pro , Blue & Red. What do i need to fix in the DVD Studio Pro application to get my DVD's to play on everday DVD players? I know its prob. just a minor thing.

all of the DVDs i use are the Apple brand DVDs. When i am finished with a project in Final Cut Pro i export it using Compressor and choose MPEG DVD option. All of my footage is filmed with a Panasonic AG-DVX100, DV Film. I dont mess around with the 24fps featture because that gets to confusing and havent found much sucess for that.

  • DVD Player not playing discs

My DVD player won't play rental dvd's etc .. I get a message saying "Supported Disk Not Available"
I have successfully played on 2 dvd's on this machine (it's only 2 weeks old) and each of those times i got a message asking my permission to change the region settings plus a warning that i would only be able to change the settings 5 times ... this third attempt at watching a movie (a big reason i bought the 2nd machine - to watch dvd's in my bedroom) it now gives me the 'not supported' message
    HELP!!!!!

After some research I tried a suggestion from another forum to repair disk permissions - so far so good (at least the dvd i was trying to watch played no problem)
I did see numerous posts in my travels where people had experienced exactly the samr thing that I had - is there a bug Apple???
