DVD-R not loading

Trying to load a DVD-R that has pictures on it, but it will not load.  I can hear it trying to load, but it just ejects the DVD.  Any ideas?

The experts in this forum strongly recommend Verbatim DVD-R disks and burn at the slowest speed possible
Burning too slow is often just as bad as burning too fast. (I like 4X.)
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/advancedconcepts.htm
I have found DVD+R to be more reliable than DVD-R. The only disadvantage to DVD+R is that DVD players manufacture before 2003 may not play them.
DVD+R disks are better than DVD-R disks because of the increased error correction technique used for the +R type.
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW
I use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08.
"DVD-R is inferior for data preservation for three reasons: inferior error correction, inferior ‘wobble’ tracking, and the fact its data writing methods look like an un-needed halfway point between CD-R and DVD+R."
http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media/
This may be the best media if money is no object.
MAM-A DVD+R 4.7GB. Mitsui Gold Archive DVD
Gold archive recordables are high performance discs featuring gold-on-gold construction, which provides longevity and maximum resistance to environmental degregation.
I would also recommend Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs. (I get excellent results using iMovie 06 with iDVD 08.)

Is there a way to reset a built in dvd/cd player on a macbook pro - early 2011? I don't think I have 5 hrs total on this player but I can not get it to load, eject, read, etc. It appears to be stuck in an open state? really lost since I want to copy my pictures on this dvd...please advise.

Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

  • Previous made DVDs now not loading

Previous DVDs that I have made on my computer are not being recognized now.
Back up of iPhoto, iDVD projects, iTunes back up. I have Sony, Imation, Verbatim
brands and nothing opens anymore. They were all created on this computer.
The only change was to install iLife 08 which went awful on install and finally had
to do a clean install. I have done repair permissions etc.... I can put a BLANK DVD
in and the computer reads it fine, I can burn photos to it, and read it .... but anything
that I had made previously on a DVD will not open. CD's seem to be fine. I did have
to do something in iDVD 08 to get all the past versions to show up properly. I also
have a Apple laptop and all the DVD's open and play fine in that. But that only has
iLife 06, didn't want to chance any problems with iLife '08 in that.
May I have changed some setting along the way that has caused this?
System Preferences are set correctly for when a CD DVD is installed.

Old Toad if you happen to recheck this......
I ran the hardware disk on my eMac and everything came up fine. I can install a new DVD and record on it just fine. I can put in a DVD install disk and it works fine, I can put in a store bought DVD movie and it plays just fine. I can put in a previous made CD and that works fine. It is just a previous made
DVD from this computer that will not work. I did the safe boot, I set up another user, I did the compressed air in the tray. Nothing. And this all happened right after a clean install and the installation of iLife 08. I have no access to my photos, iDVD's previously made.
    Any more thoughts ????

It seems it might have something to do with rights, although I have added user to video, audio, optical, hal, dbus. but when I press eject I get this error,

it must be something simple that is screwing it all up.

  • Since upgrading to 10.9.4 dvds will not load

After upgrading to OS X 10.9.4 onto my 2011 iMac, I tried to load a DVD. It whirled around and then got stuck. It took me about 3 hrs to finally get it unstuck.  Now it will not accept DVD's at all, just whirls them around and pops them out. CD's it will take. I then upgraded the software for 10.9.4 and tried again. nothing. I want to install Photoshop and can't get the install disc to run. I'd appreciate some ideas. Nanci

  • ILife '08 CPU Drop In DVD will not load

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro (OSX 10.5.8) and after reinstalling my OS, I tried to reinstall iLife '08 using the drop in DVD included with the computer. The disc is inserted, spins for a while, then ejects without any message... How can I get this software reinstalled? Does this DVD actually function as an installer (Why else would I have it?) I do not have another mac available to test the DVD with, but here are my computer specs if you need them:

drop-in DVD? please clarify what you mean by that. do you mean the drop-in dvd that came with your computer in addition to the original tiger install disks? such disks were included with computers that came out around the time leopard was released. ilife is not present on such drop-in disks. or do you mean the original grey install disk that came with your computer?

  • CD/DVD will not load

Just tried to load a new printer CD into my new I-MAC and it won't load. You can insert the CD in more than half way and wait and it won't load. I can verify that it did work because I had to reinstall 10.5.6 after the original was corrupted after being automatically "updated" by apple and then losing access to several functions. Any way to test if drive is functioning? I read an existing posting about inserting the diagnostic disc and see the results. Can't do that here because CD drive doesn't work. This is my fist chat and wonder if there is a chat room with a Apple Tech available anywhere? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

If the drive is not accepting the disc into the drive, it sounds like a hardware problem. Make sure you have tried shutting down (powering OFF) the Mac and then restarting, if you have not done so yet.
You might also try this procedure to reset the SMC (power management)

  • The installation dvd will not load

My Mac will not read the dvd to install elements 12.  It reads other dvd's but not this one.

Please excuse the question, but I do not want to take anything for granted.
When you purchase Premiere Elements 12, it comes with 2 discs, one for Windows and one for Mac.
Any chance that you picked up and are trying to use the Windows disc in the Mac computer?
If not, then try downloading tryout installation files for 12 from the following web site and then insert your purchased
    serial number during installation.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Direct Download Links, Premiere too | ProDesignTools
Be sure to read and carry out carefully the web page's "Note: Very Important Instructions" otherwise you will end up with
    an Access Denied message.
Please review, consider, and then let us know the outcome.
    Thank you.

  • CDs work fine DVDs will not load

My iMac will load and play CDs fine, but when I put in a DVD to watch a movie it spins for a minute or two then ejects the disc. I tried multiple discs and tried them in my iBook (which all discs worked fine in) Any ideas? Is there a way to check and see if the drive is bad or something?

I concur. Sounds like the DVD laser got dirty and/or the head mechanism got broke.
One thing to watch out for with optical drives such as these is following this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446?viewlocale=en_US
Corrolary, don't use sticky labels on optical discs. They can tear and get into the mechanisms. Don't write with sharpies or other pens either, use jewelcases to store discs safely and jewelcase inserts to identify the contents of the disc.

  • Blank DVD will not load so that I can burn to it

    Hello,
I have been trying to burn playlists in itunes onto a blank dvd. I can burn CDs, but when I try to insert a blank DVD, it checks media and spits it back out. Neither will my MAC show the blank dvd on my desktop when I insert it outside of iTunes. I have an internal DVD drive and an external one....same story!!??
The very last time I tried to burn a DVD in iTunes, it started, but then I got some strange message about the spool running out?? I've never seen it before.
I have verified and repaired my preferences. Any ideas as to what could be wrong?
    Thanks,
    John

    John,
what kind of DVD? Plus or Minus?
If using Plus media try to switch to Minus.
btw. what kind of drive came with your Mac?

  • CD player working, DVD is not

I have a strange new problem. My G5's CD player is working fine, but the DVD will not load. I used a laser cleaner but to no avail. I rebooted and repaired permissions but nothing seems to work. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks.

Sometimes, you just need to change the setting in System Preferences CDs & DVDs pane. If it's video DVDs you are having trouble with, change +When you insert a video DVD+ to something else, like Ignore. See if the DVD will now mount to desktop without doing anything. If that works, set it back to whatever it was before, like *Open DVD Player*.
Changing the setting rewrites the preference file, which is often all you need to get it to work again like it's supposed to work.

  • Quicktime 7.2 will not load

I am unable to get QuickTime ver 7.2 to run on my custom PC running Windows XP-2. Photoshop User group (NAPP) says they are having trouble with the latter versions but ver 7.2 works OK. So I have followed Adobe trouble shooting techniques to completely unload all previous Quicktime and Itune software - rebooted several times. Reloaded the standard QuickTime ver 7.2 - Does Not Work.
When I insert a DVD such as an instructional DVD or a movie such as Pink Panther, the DVD is not loaded. If I play the DVD in MS Windows Media Player - the movie plays fine but no sound. If I look at the drive with the DVD I only see the three folders; 1 - AUDIO_TS with no files, 2 - images with files & 3 - VIDEO_TS with files. I see no files at all in the root directory, my setting is set to show hidden files. These DVD's used to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions what I may do to see these DVD's? Thank you in advance.
    Bill

QuickTime Player doesn't open DVD formats like MPEG-2 without additional software.

There is no proper substitute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?
