DVD+R playing question

Hey guys a friend of mine had a question regarding playing a DVD+R. He was wondering if he built a program and burned it onto a DVD+R, would it play on a computer with a DVD drive? I am not sure on this format because I only burn DVD-R with my Mac. As long as he has _TS files it should play right? Thanks in advance
Rhyno

DVD-R is supported by some manufacturers, and DVD+R by others. Most of the newer DVD drives support both, but check the manufacturer's specs first on whatever drive you're going to use for playback to be sure that it's compatible. I'm assuming you have a Super Drive on your G5 which I believe does support both specs.

Video portion of Nightwish DVD not playing correctly on Quicktime.  It is not a smooth playback. A little jerky. Is there an easy slution to the problem?

I worded my question incorrectly. It isn't a DVD I'm having the problem with, it' s a Nightwish concert download form iTunes I am having the video portion of the video that plays not smoothy. Like it is moothing it short little segments, not a steady flow!

  • Screenshot of DVD in Play Mode?

This is not an iDVD question strictly speaking, but I'm not sure where else to ask it: with the newest version of OS X, how can I take a screenshot while I have a DVD in play mode? I am trying to capture some still images from a DVD and cannot figure this out.

    Hi Meatyard
Welcome to apple discussions. There's an app called SnapZProX (somewhat pricey though IMO when compared to the price of apple's iLife). But it can do this well.
    http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
And I know it's not always possible to do a dvd screen grab while in Preview but the approach I use that works well for me is pressing all three of the following keys Command + Shift + 4

FC/e is based upon the Quicktime-engine; so, on 'Export using QT', you'll get all codecs & settings.
    but which one..
due to sheer popularity, YouTube became a 'standard' - I'm happy with the convenience, YT and the 'embed'-code offers - excellent quality, automatic adjusted to the watchers connection&hardware.
    my export settings are 720p, h264, 6MBit/sec - gives a - imho! - superb quality.
(example of a 'screen-test' from my latest project CLICK )
for creating so-called 'flash video'/.flv, you need 3rd party apps.
Sorenson Squeeze is more of an pro-tool, .. you need some background knowledge to get noticeable 'better' quality.
.. and the question is: are you willing to pay $.$$$ for that 0.x% more quality .. ? does your source offers such a 101% quality, which needs such affords?
if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

  • Edit existing DVD menus/play order?

Can DVD Studio Pro edit an existing DVD's play order?
Of course, I'm talking about authoring a new DVD with re-ordering of things, but not to extract everything and then create a new project, new menus, generate new video files, etc. in DVD Studio Pro, which would be a lot of work. I'm hoping to make the simple edits to the .IFO files, or whichever files would need to be changed for this intended purpose.
I hear of a PC app called IFOEdit, which could be used for this purpose. Can DVD Studio Pro do this too? or is there another Mac solution?

Yes...Hal is the man. The best way would be to download or buy one of the tools listed and start answering questions on forums. DVDAFterEdit site is good and so is videohelp.com. Either that or sit in with someone who work with spec authoring tools. Ralph LaBarge's book on DVD production is great along with DVD Demystified.

The IMAC will play rented dvd movies.   The dvd movie plays fine on my Mac Book Pro (10.6.8) on the Pro's DVDPlayer (vers.5.4) abd in my external Sony DVD Player  The dvd move was made/burned on a PC.   Why will a dvd movie play on my Macbook Pro and not my IMAC?

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • How do I use airplay to stream a DVD movie playing in my computer to display on my TV?

How do I use airplay to stream a DVD movie playing in my computer to display on my TV?
I have a 2nd generation Apple TV and computer is a 2011 Macbook Pro. Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB. Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). Storage: about 500GB free out of 750GB.
I have a DVD player within my computer. Trying to play a movie from my computer to display onto my TV using my Apple TV airplay. But the airplay icon is not showing or giving the option to play a movie onto my TV.
I've installed all software updates and still I'm not able to have this functionality.
I assume this functionality exists where I can play a DVD on my computer, but watch it on my TV using my Apple TV, correct?
Thanks for your help solving this puzzle.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.
AirPlay Mirroring from a Mac also requires a fairly robust network.
You may find a third party product that you can use instead of AirPlay.

  • I can't get dvds to play "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]  Anybody know how to resolve this?

I can't get dvds to play and, instead, get "There was an initialization error.  A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"  I went in for a Genius appt Friday and it played for the tech...but now I'm back home (one and a half hours from the store) and I'm getting the error message again when I try to load a dvd.  Any recommendations?

    Hello, try this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Reboot... any change?

  • I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggsts

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. I insert the DVD and wait for the player to start automatically but after 10 minutes, nothing is happening and it sounds like the disk has stopped spinning. I've now tried with four different DVDs (all store bought and so perfectly normal disks). The Mac doesn't eject the disk or anything it just doesn't seem to respond to it being there at all.
My main confusion is why this suddenly happened today when it was perfectly fine last week.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

  • DVDSP 3 somewhat BLOCKY look on DVD when played back

I have been shooting my home footage on a Canon GL2
    editing in FCP 4.5
and when I have a finished sequence to be placed on a DVD, I have been exporting the Self Contained Quicktime w/ chapter makers.
I then importing these Quicktime files into DVDSP-3
I have experimented with serveral of the encoding setting (Bit Rate, 1 pass VBR, 2 pass VBR etc...)
I have been told in forums before not to go above 8mps on the bit rate in order to ensure that my DVD will play on most players.
So, the best setting that I have found is the 2 pass VBR, 7.5 average, 8 max bit rate, and Best on the motion estimation...
But, I have still been somewhat frustrated when watching these DVDs back because of the blocky look I am seeing in some of the scenes.
Is there a better way I should be compressing?
Should I be using compressor instead... strait from my FCP timeline... to MPEG 2?
Shorter GOPs? Would that effect how the DVDs will play on some players?
    I appreciate any help!!!
    Thanks, Greg

    Greg
You may want to try an alternative Encoder ! A bit drastic but I have had so many problems with MPEG2's using Compressor and encoding through DVDSP (probably down to me not understanding the 'black art'!) that I bought BitVice Vers 1.6 from Innobits. It is not cheap (£215/$317) and only encodes MPEG2's but the results I am getting are very acceptable just using the default settings but changing the target bit rate to 5.5. Very easy/simple to use. The pictures have a real 'punch' to them and there are no artifacts/blurring etc - which is a major bonus! You can download a trial version which encodes as normal but places a watermark over the top of the final output. Even so, it does give you an idea of what it can do and it made me purchase the encoder straight away!

  • After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

    Grahamster, welcome to the forum.
I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

  • DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files from my hard drive

When logged into my home account DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files that are on my hard drive. I get an error message: "there was a problem opening the media. Media type is not supported." When logged in as "root" DVD player does play these same files. Also, when logged in to my home account, I can play these same files in VLC.

Go this this thread for more details:

But the gist of the fix is to delete or rename "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" and let the DVD Player build a new one. It seems that this is caused by a migrated PPC preference that borks DVD Player 5 on Intel Macs, which is what just happened to me. Hope this helps.
