What are the best DVD-R for recording movies and slideshows?

Sue and Gus have probably seen this too many times, but here goes for you:
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."

Lousy DVD video quality on high res photos!

I need some help. I am new to using iMovie and iDVD.
I just created a 15 minute video with a lot of high resolution photos (anywhere from 1920x1200 to 4256x2828). These photos are sharp and look superb on a computer monitor. Once processed through iMovie and iDVD the photos look terrible - low res noise all over the place - pixels are swimming - when played back on an HDTV with a nice upscaling DVD player. (I've tested on three DVD players - one on my MacBook Pro - all DVD output looks terrible.)
The process I used from iMovie was Share Export to iDVD. While the Share Export to Quicktime output looks great in the native 960x540 playback in QuickTime - even full screen on an HDTV. But quality of what is on the DVD is terrible - particularly at showing the still pictures!
Question: If I want to optimize the image for highest quality DVD playback is there a resolution I should process the photos to with Photoshop prior to importing to iMovie (640x480 for example?) Is this just one factor? What about the method of getting the iMovie product to iDVD - does THAT matter?
How do I get to a quality, hi res. image during DVD playback if I'm using iMovie and iDVD for a slide show?
Note that most DVD players are upscaling to an HD monitor with resolution of 1080i or 1080p.
What is the secret?

Poor DVD viewing quality

This may be the wrong forum as I am not trying to burn or create a DVD, just play regular movies.
The quality is atrocious. I can barely see the movie, it's all dark and cartoonish. Also, videos on YouTube are virtually unwatchable.
Overall, the image quality is the worst I've ever seen on any computer. Is this just the way MAC's are, or is there something wrong with my particular notebook?

REVISITED "DVD: best quality" & "MPEG-2 high quality encode"-difference??

Re-explain: I see "DVD best quality" and "MPEG-2 high quality encode" have all the same settngs. Not sure if there was a difference. Yesterday I was convinced no difference. After recompressing the same video at same settings MPEG-2 HQ encoding took three times longer to compress. going to work with it--this was home work--to view on monitor that, after reviewing, made me come home to recompress.
So--again--is there a difference fo the two choices???

****DVD Best Quality Bitrate

I've exported my project from FCP to Compressor, and plan on using the DVD Best Quality 90min setting. When I go into my Encoder settings and then the Quality tab, I can't seem to raise my bitrate above 7.7mbps.
Note: I'm using Two-Pass VBR and I know that you can do it with the CBR, but is not possible with the VBR options?
It's a very, very short clip - about 30 seconds long - and I'd really like to get that bitrate up there.

No, not possible with VBR.
In order for VBR to be well, variable, you need to have some difference between your average and max. As you can see, Compressor prefers that difference to be at least 1.0 Mbps. (A little more, like the 1.3 you get at the top end, once you crank the average bit rate past 6.0.)
But VBR is really meant to minimize the space needed for an encoded file while maximizing quality. Since you seem to have a lot of room, not sure VBR is worth it. CBR is probably best.
Also be careful with bit rates that are too high. Depending on the player used (more expensive THX-certified ones being the problem, actually) a burned disc with a sky-high bit rate can cause issues (freezes, stutters, jumps, etc) that makes a disc unplayable. Even if you use Dolby Digital audio.
But that last bit is hit-or-miss depending on the player and sheer luck. I personally never go higher than 7.0 with CBR or 7.5 Max when doing VBR. Call me cautious.

I've noticed the two settings under compression settings. I don't see any difference between the setting make up. Am I missing anyhing or is there really a difference if I use one over he other. I've always used DVD Best Quality.

DVD playback quality problems

I've made a few movie using photos from Iphoto to imovie to idvd.All seems to go smoothly. When I preview it in idvd it looks fine. After burning to a DVD the quality changes.Both on my mac & on my dvd player on the tv.
Let me explain what I mean when I say quality changes.
When a new photo comes out of it's transition it is crisp & clear.... for about 1/2 a second. Then it goes slightly out of focus or fuzzy.
This happens with every photo in the movie.
Is there something I can do to stop this from happening in future projects?
My computer skills are limited at best.
Is it something I'm doing wrong or my settings somewhere?
Any assistance or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Your observation is same as mine.
Two problems occures:
a. Your DVD disk is bad - so is mine
b. More problematic is that Your original iMovie movie project also is harmed.
You'll need to re-import Your photos and r-edit them.
NOW: Don't use the Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie.
• Just close iMovie.
• Open iDVD
• Drop the movie icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD themw window
Now iDVD will do the rendering and so much better.
More: Quality of the DVD-disc depends on several things.
• I DON'T USE the function Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie - IT IS DESTRUCTIVE !!
Just drop the movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window - then iDVD do the
rendering and so much better. Especially if there is photos in the movie.
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc - should be about 25Gb when all material is imported
and structured. This for iDVD to work with - iDVD can't use an extern hard disc as scratch.

• Best Quality isn't Top - better is Best Performances (up to 60 min movie)
confused naming - in iDVD'08 there is Pro Quality AND I like it.

• Type: IF SL DVDs -> DVD-R my choise no DVD+R or +/-RW
• I save a Disc-Image and burn this at an as SLOW speed as possibly (eg x1) with Toast™

It would be more helpful to understand your workflow and what type files you have made.
Are you using audio from both cameras? Do the changes/problems correspond with the camera switch?
Try this with a minute of the problem footage
Export a QT reference file(export QT(not QT conversion)-uncheck make self-contained in the lower left)
(a reference file is like a band-aid- do not use more than once). Listen to it in QT- how does it sound?
If you have a mix/audio problem here it is most likely related to what you are exporting from FC.
If it sounds good:
Create an AC3 and MPG2 of your minute test
Create a DVD with a track of your 1 minute test.
Build the dvd to a folder on your desktop.
Open the Video_TS(from the build folder) in the Mac DVD player App. Whatever you see and hear in the app is exactly what will end up on the burned disc. This is the best way to QC the DVD before you burn it.

There is a good chance that the DVD is OK and the machine is OK since a DVD's resolution is set for a television and not for a computer with a resolution 4 times that of the tele (at least).
What are you using to play DVD?
What is the DVD and what does it say on the cover about resolution or aspect ratio?
Just because you have a retina Mac doesn't mean you will get an excellent picture from low resolution media, if you are using DVD player use the menu option for 'Actual Size' this will play it at the resolution for the DVD, any larger then it will start to pixelate.

More then 2hrs to compresse 60minutes VIDEO file in MPEG 2 DVD BEST QUALITY

On my Dual 2.5 GHz 4GB RAM, is this normal ?

It took 3h30 minutes. Will I see a difference using DVD Fastest Encode ? For exemple, can it be possible to have a problem like the DVD freezing in some DVD player because I'm using a faster Encoding setting like DVD Fastest ?
This is my workflow for now:
-Export from FCP, AUDIO ONLY current settings, self contained.
-Export from FCP, VIDEO ONLY current settings, self contained.
-Import to Compresor the self contained files and compress the audio file using Dolby 2.0 before sending to DVDSP.
-Import to Compresor the self contained video file and compress using DVD Best quality MPEG2 2-pass before sending to DVDSP.
I do NOT export from FCP directly to Compressor.

Why is the resolution of my DVD poor quality?

Hello All,
I am creating a DVD with several menus. The menus have images accompanied by large bodies of text. I made all my menus in Photoshop as 1280x720. I've set up all my menus, and they look great in the preview, but when I author it to a DVD I can barely read any of my text, and the images look like they are a really poor resolution.
Is there a way to get better quality?
I'm using a basic DVD-R 16x 4.7GB

Exporting through Adobe Media Encoder as MPEG2-DVD but quality is pixelated. Help!

So, I am exporting my project through media encoder - MPEG2-DVD, Quality 5, NTSC, 29.97 drop frame, Progressive, Standard 4:3, VBR 2 Pass, 7.4697, 7.4697, 8.0382, Frames 3 & 15. I have done this process many, many times. Today, I am getting this pixelated junk when I pull the exported file into Encore. It looks smooth in the window prior to export but then it comes out like this. I am using footage that I captured into Premiere Pro and animation created in After Effects. Can anyone help?

DVD Image Quality Problem

I just began using Final Cut Studio and elected to burn my DVD from IDVD as I am not yet comfortable with Sutdio Pro. When I play back my disc on any computer MAC or PC it plays fine. However, when I play it on a set-top DVD player two problems occur. 1) I get occasional brief pilelation in a scene. It doesn't always happen at the same place in the playback. 2). Some of the video scenes (especially those which I have extended by slowing the motion, even thogh I have applied frame blending) tend to flicker. Neither of these problems occur when the DVD is played on a computer/monitor or even when played on a tv monitor using the s-video output from a computer. But both happen on the three set-top players I have tried. Any thoughts. Thanks.

Welcome to the world of authoring DVDs. It is very difficult to troubleshoot the exact problem. For starters, iDVD did its job, it made a DVD compliant disc that plays on a DVD player. It plays better on your computer DVD player for a variety of reasons. Your computer has much more sophisticated hardware/software for DVD playback than does a tabletop unit. It could simply be that a progressive scan tabletop DVD player may give you better results. The point being that two different players can yield different results. Artifacts/ pixilation can be by-products of MPEG2 compression (which is what iDVD does to create a DVD). It is helpful to have a basic understanding of what makes a DVD a DVD. When you record on mini-DV you are recording to an already compressed format. Arguably a very good compressed format but compressed nonetheless. This means information is being tossed at the point you are using the camcorder. iDVD, or any DVD authoring app on any computer, Windoze or Mac, compresses this material even further into the MPEG 2 format for playback via a tabletop DVD player. Now mini-DV has about 30 frames per second (NTSC). MPEG (in a very basic nutshell) takes a picture about twice every 30 frames and uses this as a reference frame and then only records the motion difference between that reference frame and the next time it creates a reference frame. So you go from 30 frames/second to TWO, with motion difference! This is how one hour of DV which is 13 gigs, can be compressed to fit onto one DVD. Two hours would be 26 gigs of DV compressed to one DVD! Hence the general quality difference between one-hour and two. And keep in mind that is compression will show artifacts that may have always been there but you didn’t see until the other 28 frames where tossed out. Slow motion can also be very difficult to encode. I have found that going under 50% slow-motion is problematic. One work around is to create your slow-motion sequence and send it back to tape and then re-import from the tape. Now it is no longer a software effect but an actual 29.97 fps clip. Clips with a lot of motion, quick pans & zooms, hand held shots and so on, will also suffer more artifacts because the whole frame is in motion and thus difficult to encode. Which is why a tripod is recommended to keep the frame steady!

DVD poor quality

I just created a DVD but the video quality is too poor to use. I get 'ghosting' or flicker with motion, which is 99% of the content.
A client gave me 14 home-made DVDs containing video of high school basketball games and asked me to create a highlight video. I edited the VOB files in Premiere CS4 (4.1.0) to pull highlights and compile them into a single highlight DVD.
I exported the video to Adobe Media Encoder (4.0.0.374) to create a F4V file to be used on websites. I used the standard preset. The quality of the F4V video is good.
I then used Adobe Dynamic Link to export to Encore CS4 (4.0.0.258). I burned a DVD and the result was a DVD with poor quality.
There is a brief clip in the highlight video that I recorded myself of the athlete providing a short introduction of himself. That clip and the still titles I made look good on the DVD, but the highlight clips from the client's DVDs are very poor.
From some of the discussions I've already read in this forum, I assume I need to change a field option or the Anti-flicker value under Effect Controls or something similar, but haven't figured out what yet. Also, when I make changes to values, do I have to burn a DVD to see the result of the change or is there a better way to preview?

A client gave me 14 home-made DVDs containing video of high school basketball games and asked me to create a highlight video. I edited the VOB files in Premiere CS4 (4.1.0) to pull highlights and compile them into a single highlight DVD.
It is very likely that the double MPEG-2 encoding is degrading the material too much. Is it possible to get back to the client's original tapes? That would save one MPEG-2 compression. Otherwise, what you have is probably as good as it will get.

The spec looks great, but I'm concerned that the CNet review says that on their test machine:
the DVD- and video-output quality was marred by false contouring (banded or splotchy colors), moiré patterns (line distortion), and jagged diagonals
I can't find any mention of this problem in this forum, so perhaps CNet had an early version, or a manufacturing defect, or was poorly configured.
To put my mind at rest, can anybody confirm that the DVD player works fine for them on this system? And if so what exact configuation they have?

nice setup.. OSX with Front Row is a good platform for HTPC. Unfortunately the picture quality is not as good as what you can obtain with PC's. but it is still plenty good. Then again, if you will watch DVD's only, I would recommend getting an upconverting DVD player (Oppo is a good brand for 200 bucks aprox). Again, check out the avsforums, you'll find plenty of useful info and very helpful people.
