DVD reader/CD writer-reader doesn'tn work?

Last week it seemed to work fine. I installed software for an external harddrive and turbo tax. Tonight I went to watch a DVD and it wouldn't recognize it. After a few seconds it automatically ejected the disc. It won't read any discs in the house. Luckily I bought Apple Care so if worst comes to worst I can go that route - but I do need the computer on a daily basis and would rather not have to send it off.
Any ideas?

*Uninstall the Toshiba programs:*
TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator
TOSHIBA Disc Creator
Then restart your PC using the Power-->Restart option in Windows 8.
Your CD/DVD should be accessible now.
For help with uninstalling these programs follow the instructions below
*To Uninstall a program or application:*
1. At the START screen type Control Panel
2. Select Programs --> Uninstall a program
3. Find the two programs listed above and uninstall these applications
4. After the application programs are uninstalled restart your computer using the Power-->Restart option in Windows 8
5. When the computer power back on the CD/DVD drive should be available
If the CD/DVD drive still does not appear follow the instructions below to uninstall a device driver
*To uninstall a device driver:*
1. At the START screen type Device Manager
2. Select Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives > right click on the device displayed > select Uninstall.
3. After the driver uninstalls, power down you computer using the restart method. The driver will install automatically when the computer restarts.
4. The CD/DVD drive should now be shown.

Reformatted my T40, and now the DVD reader doesn't work.

I have recently reformatted my T40, had some problems with viruses, but it is alright now.
Only then, do I realize that my DVD reader does not read. I tried a regular CD and it worked, not the DVD though.
There was nothing wrong with the DVD player, prior to reformatting. So, could it be something I did when reformatting?

If you re-loaded the software from the IBM recovery CDs, you should have the decoder (DVD player) software installed. If you used a microsoft OS CD, it doesn't come with the player.

Adobe Reader doesn't work after windows 7 update

Hello,
My Adobe Reader X was working fine, until one night where Windows 7 automatically updated, and after that Adobe Reader doesn't work anymore. It doesn't respond AT ALL when I click on it, and I cannot view PDF files anymore.
I uninstalled it, and re-installed it --- still doesn't work. I tried downloading version 9, but still it doesn't work.
I also tried to do system restore, but somehow it won't let me --- it says it failed to do so.
When I try to open PDF files in IE 10, it says "There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader..." and an error code of 103:103.
Could anyone help me?

CD/DVD reader is not working, please help.

My cd/dvd reader is not working at all, when I put any cd or dvd on it, the led of the reader starts blinkin but then it stops and nothing happens. If you upgraded and were using a version of Acrobat Reader that was legacy, that is PPC compatible, then you will have to upgrade to a version compatible with Lion as Lion no longer has Rosetta to interface with the legacy software.
I know that Acrobat, full version, 10 works with Lion...use it myself.

Version of Reader? OS? Can you open reader by double-clicking on its icon? Can you open reader by double-clicking on a pdf file? What programs are trying to open reader? Some programs might be restricting your ability to view pdf files using the Reader plug-in due to security concerns. If this is the case you need to find out how to enable the plug-in in the case of each application.

Cac card reader doesn't work on my mac now

I upgraded to mountain os x lion and now my cac card reader doesn't work when I login in to ako. when I use the cac card login it doesn't read my id or the reader. what can I do to fix it because i've been googling and I haven't found a solution.

Hey all. A few weeks ago I plugged in my SD card like I've always done, but my SD reader didn't work. I've tried SMC reset and PRAM reset. Nothing works. The SD reader doesn't show up in apple system profiler nor in Disc Utility. I've tried different SD cards.
What can be done?

i tried that since Yosemite killed my SD Card reader... its so annoying. i don't even know if its a hardware or software issue. however, the check didn't worked... and all my 3 SD Cards are working well...

I've problem with Adobe Reader plug-in. When I have open tab with pdf file, my arrow keys don't work in other tabs in firefox, only in this tab where it's open pdf file. Also I noticed that when trying to use the arrows in the other cards, they work on a pdf file.
I'm tried to uninstall and install again Adobe Reader, but it doesn't work. Please help.

I solved the problem by reinstall Firefox, because when i turned off Adobe-plugin my pdf file still worked , but arrows still didn't worked. I think, that it wasn't problem with adobe plugin.

TCP Read doesn't work sometimes

Hi Everyone, I have a problem where my build .exe doesn't work on some computers but works fine on others. it uses a tcp connection to grab data off a custom server program which packages bluetooth data.
The program build works fine on my development computer as well as another desktop, but on a 3rd computer the code simply doesn't read the data from the server. I've disabled windows firewall but i have no idea what else to try - anyone have this problem before?

That tells me there was a driver you did not install on the other computer. LabVIEW 2013 tries to automatically figure out what drivers you need when you configure an installer. This issue does not sound like it had anything to do with the TCP/IP.

Inspiron 1520: memory card reader doesn't work in Windows 8

I upgraded my daughters Inspiron 1520 to Windows 8 and everything works well. The only problem we are having is the memory card reader does not work. Windows 8 recognizes it and shows the action center flag and advises us to install a new driver.. We install the driver R188776.exe, install it, and re-boot, but the memory card reader still doesn't work.. Is there another driver we can install?

It asked if I wanted to use it since I already had a newer driver in installed and I did it anyways. No more flags in device manager. Hope it helps.

SetSoTimeout for blocking SocketChannel.read() doesn't work

When I tried to perform reading in blocking mode with using NIO's SocketChannel.read() method with a desired timeout, the SocketChannel.socket().setSoTimeout() method that was called before SocketChannel().read() funtion, seemed not to work properly. The read() method blocked the thread for infinite time even if I set the timeout to any non-zero value (zero means according the manual infinite timeout).
Here is the example code:
SocketChannel iochan;
ByteBuffer bb = new ByteBuffer.allocateDirect(1024);
iochan = SocketChannel.open(new InetSocketAddress(some address, some port));
iochan.socket().setSoTimeout(2000); //should wait max. 2 secs on next read
iochan.read(bb); //read some data to the buffer; if none present within 2 seconds then exception should be thrown - but it never happens. The thread is blocked until some data comes or the connection is closed by the peer, for example.
What is very interesting is that this code is OK:

As you see the same socket is used. Nonetheless, I would like to use SocketChannel methods (NIO). Can anyone help me? Why doesn't work timeouts for blocking SocketChannel methods(read(),...), whereas "classic" sockets methods are OK?
I'm using W2K SP3, Java 1.4.1_01.

I've run into a similar problem using DatagramSockets. Apparently socket timeouts aren't supported using the nio packages, but nowhere in the documentation is this mentioned. The following bug report gives more info:

Apparently this is not considered a bug. I do however hope this is fixed in JDK 1.5, when I understand more work is to be done on nio.

DVD-ROM/ CD-RW drive doesn't work

I have had my iMac for a little over 3 years now and just recently the DVD-Rom/ CD-RW drive has stopped working. I have read other users posts and discovered that this problem has been happening to them as well, but no one has listed what is causing the problem or how to fix it other than sending it back to Apple. as of right now, no disk will play on my iMac. If the problem was as simple as a dirty lens I wouldn't be posting this problem. Does anyone have a clear answer as to what is going on? My problem specifically is that whenever I insert a Cd or DVD, the disk begins spinning in the computer like it is trying to read it, and then stop, repeating the process about 3-5 times before booting the disk out of the computer. As of right now I have tried using canned air to blow out any dirt that may have settled in the computer or on the lens, I have bought a DVD-ROM cleaning kit, but the disk won't even spin to attempt and clean the lens, and I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM twice. As of right now I am at a loss. I had the understanding that Apple computer were of a higher quality than most, especially their pc counterparts, so this comes as a shock. If anyone can help me with my problem it would be greatly appreciated, although I have been through the majority of these forums and have found no answer. Thanks for any help any of you can provide.

I purchased my flat panel iMac in June 2003. In May 2004, Apple contacted me about extending my AppleCare. The price wasn't that much, but it was still extra money and hey, my machine was working fine. I should have known better. sigh
One month later my drive started to fail. At first, it would stop in the middle of playing a DVD and then act like it couldn't read the DVD. Ker-chunk, ker-chunk, it went. I just wanted to watch the rest of my movie. Sometimes a restart would cure the problem, but sometimes not.
As time passed, I logged onto the discussions area here and read about replacing my drive with a new drive. I should have replaced the drive back then...but I was afraid of taking my iMac apart.
So for the past year, I have put up with the problem. Now the drive is starting to fail more than it works. I finally broke down and ordered a Pioneer 109 drive, and will replace the drive as soon as it arrives. Wish me luck.
My main frustration is that it's an obvious flaw in the flat-panel iMac, and I wish that Apple would address the problem. I'd also like to note that in the first year, I think I burned 3-4 DVDs and 3-4 CDs so the drive certainly couldn't have failed to overuse.
Will I buy another Mac? Yes, but I will definitely get Applecare.
I'll post a follow-up after doing surgery on my machine to replace the drive.

Book dvd for After Effects download doesn't work

I recently downloaded the dvd for my book "After Effects CS5 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques" from Peachpit because my school downloaded copy of the book didn't come with the dvd. When I've finished downloading the files, and I go into the folders, there are no lessons in there, and I cannot open the AE files that are in there. What gives?
