DVD reader fails, VLC succeeds

Hello there,
I found no topic in direct relation with this. I have an iBook G4 with its Radeon Mobility 9200. The system is up to date (10.4.7) When I play DVD such as commercial movies, DVD reader app (last version) make it scratchy, slow, as if the machine itself were ready to die. But when I play it with VLC, it works fine.
As VLC doesn't need hardware acceleration, I suspect it's a problem with the video card. But no other app reacts like this. So again I suspect the GPU driver to be faulty.
Has anyone already met this trouble?
Any idea to fix this?
Yours,
Fabinho

Hello etresoft,
I can hear that. But still I am not convinced : I do not say that VLC is better than DVD Player, I say DVD Player should just run the DVD playback. It does not. Maybe when I can copare both on this very machine I can tell you "heh this one runs better than that one", but I can't understand that a stock app from Apple just doesn't do the job. Be it a good or a poor job, I need a job to be done.
Yours,
Fabinho

  • The DVD drive fails to read some disks

Audio disks and program disks that read OK on my other Macs may fail to read on this one, yet this one recognizes most disks with no trouble.
I'll buy a few new music disks and two will be fine while the 3rd isn't recognized. I put the unregognized one in my PowerBook and it's 100% OK there.
This MacBook Pro is not an over-used drive. 20 to 30 disks over its lifetime.
Is there a cleaning disk made for laptops? The cleaners I've seen say not for laptops.
    Appreciate any advice.

No I haven't. Nor have I ever used any CD/DVD cleaning discs of any type on any drive. If I have a CD/DVD drive fail to work properly I just replace it. For the cost of most it is not worth my time to bother trying to clean an already faulty drive.
IMHO the drives used by Apple are anything But Super, as the name would imply.
The only reason I could see that any normal drive cleaning disk would not work in a Notebook Tray drive, and especially in any Slot loading drive, is if it was one of those Mini discs that are much smaller in diameter then a standard CD/DVD disc. Those will get stuck inside a slot loading drive. Not sure what the problem would be with them in a Slimline Tray loading notebook drive. Maybe because the head is already so close to the disc?
I was going by many other posts I have seen on this forum about using one of these cleaning discs.
Sorry if I mislead you in any way. That was not my intension. That is why I stated "In the end you may have to replace the drive or get an external".
    Good Luck and Best Wishes.

  • After installing VLC (64bit), my MBP only reads CDs and ejects DVDs. Uninstalling VLC did not fix the problem.  What do I do?

I have recently installed VLC media player (64bit), played a movie file on a DVD+RW for 30 seconds, then decided to stop the movie.  I poped the DVD out, and a minute later I reinserted the same DVD, it was ejected after 10 second.  Now when ever I insert the DVD in my MBP it gets ejected.  It reads my CDs but does not read my DVD. Uninstalling VLC did not fix it.  I am not even sure at this if VLC caused the problem.  What do I do?

Have you rebooted since uninstalling VLC?

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

  • Logitech external USB DVD reader/burner model LDR-PMD8U2LBK not recognized.

Got a external USB DVD reader/burner Logitech model LDR-PMD8U2LBK.
I plug the device, use the adapter but nothing happens. I tried to boot the computer with the driver plugged in, again, nothing. If I put a DVD in the driver, I hear the machine buffer but on the screen, nothing. Checked all the view options, everything is selected. It doesn't appear in the Disk Utility neither. Tried to open a DVD with VLC Player, to no avail. Checked on Logitech's site, there are no drivers for this driver. The seller told me that it should be compatible with my black macbook, I guess there is still a possibility that it is not...

You shouldn't need drivers for a USB or Firewire connected external device.

  • Solaris 10 DVD install fails at 90%

Hi, this is my first time posting here. I've used a variety of linux distributions for a few years now: first Red Hat, then Suse, then Ubuntu, and currently Gentoo. So I have familiarity with installs and *nix systems.  Now I'm trying to install Solaris 10 on a second hard drive with the install DVD that I burned from a download.  After a few tries, and learning some Solaris command line, I went ahead and selected my custom packages, then made my custom partitioning layout on the second disk, then I began the package install.
It took a while, so I was not there the whole time, but before the error, package install was at 90%. I know I had enough room on the partition for all the packages. After checking the system again I found that it had stopped, and began complaining about not finding packages on the install disk.
I tried the install again, this time with a minimum of my intervention and custom packaging selection. Again the install fails after it is mostly installed. After learning how to mount an IBM formatted disk, I copied the install logs to it, and I'd like to attach them to this post, but I can't see how to do that, if anyone can tell me how to add log files, I'd appreciate it. I just don't want to paste their entire contents here because they're too large.
Thanks in advance for the help,

Hi. I had your same problem with Solaris Express Developer Edition 01/08.
The PC was complaining about the failed installation of some packages:
    SUNWsndmr
    SUNWsndmu
    SUNWsolnm
I suspected they were audio drivers and/or libraries.
So I decided to do an absolutely minimum installation and I even excluded anything that was unnecessary and Audio-related. Actually Solaris Installer complained about unsatisfied USB debendencies, but went on anyway...
    And it worked!
    Solaris completed the installation.
I don't know if it's possible to add the left out drivers in a second moment yet. We'll see.
Maybe I'm wrong but, from your logfiles you seem to have a similar problem with:
    SUNWgttf
    SUNWgnome-config
    SUNWgnome-vfs-root
And I suspect it may be due to a CD/DVD read error.

  • Help needed.. Changed HD, 'broken' DVD reader, working recovery disks.. how to?

Hello all, hope someone can help me here. I have a Toshiba Satellite p300-19f, win vista 32 in dotation.
Long story short, the computer has served me well for roughly 3 years now. All at a sudden, on startup when on windows charging page (with win logo and green counter going up), it started freezing.
I tried recovering last working win configuration, I tried recovering precedent backup points, at times I solved until the problem randomly showed up again (same identical problem), so ultimately I formatted and re-installed fresh vanilla version from recovery partition succesfully. Problem went away, until it came back. (all of this in 1 month time span)
It worked ok for a couple weeks, and started giving the same problem again. Ultimately I figured out (I immagine) that the hard drive must have some problems, as this freezing on windows startup (immediately distinguishable as the cpu stops working / the light in front stops twinkling) occured basically randomly, regardless of software installed in the pc, or time since last format.
I decided to change the hard drive, but obviously have the problem of the new operating system. My dvd burner is broken, or at least does not work reliably. I got an external sony burner and through the toshiba disk creator applet made the recovery disks (2 DVDs) successfully.
I changed the hard drive, tried to reboot and reistall using in laptop dvd, when it gets to copy the first big file it gives a CRC error, an aborts the whole thing (sending me to a prompt of commands though.. where I copied the whole content of the DVDs on the just made HDDrecovery folder in v: through the recognized usb external burner, but the computer failed to recognize on later startups). So I tried to boot it up with the recovery disks in the external burner (bios DOES support USB boot), the disks are read, the toshiba applet for recovery is started, and as soon as it gets to the dos-like windows it freezes on "check for medium in drive".
I have the recovery disks, I have a half working dvd reader in the pc that gives errors when copying the big files and aborts installation. I have an external dvd reader that is recognized at boot, starts the installation, but fails to find "the medium"...
I hope I have explained my problem more or less.. what can I do (apart from buying a new working dvd reader for the computer) ?
If there are specific info I need to give on hardware/software, please let me know.

  • T500 dvd burner fails hl-dt dvdram gsa-u20n

my dvd burner has failed strangely -- the dvd-r and dvd+r fail to burn. However I can burn cd-r and dvd+rw.
I have tried many blank disks(dvd-r) . I reloaded to device driver.
I tried the lenovo diagnostics which give an error code for dvd-r of 2102H
and an error code of 0c00h for dvd+r
Any help on figuring whether the burner hardware is broken or there is some other problem software etc.
The firware level is HX10  and the driver is usoft, date 7/1/2001, version 5.1.2535.0

I did finally burn the disk. However, I am going to close out the problem. I borrowed an external burner and was able to burn a a blank dvd that failed to burn previously.
Somebody suggest to me that I reseat the dvd burner from my laptop. I puled it out pushed it in then it worked one time
before failing. I then tried puling it in and out several times and it seems to be working. I know this may not be a perfect solution as it indicates that the contacts may have a problem.
My ultimate thought is to buy an external burner and use the ultra bay(which has the dvd burner) for more storage.
Thank you for your diagnostic suggestions.
I'll carry the pcdoctor disk in case I have future problems.

  • Why should Adobe Reader fail to print because of settings in the Edit/Preferences?

Why should Adobe Reader fail to print because of settings
    in the Edit/Preference?
    Adobe Reader XI Version 11.0.10
    MS Window 7
    File > Print > Print
    I got the error message:
The document could not be printed
I googled this error message and used the following
solution that worked i.e. it then printed successfully.
    Edit >  Preferences
Category: Security(Enhancement)   'Enable Protected  Mode at Startup'
It was checked, changed it to unchecked.
Category: Documents    'View documents in PDF/Mode'
It was set to 'Only for PDF/A'
    Set it to 'Never'
Exited Adobe Reader and restart it. Then it printed.
I had a look on another computer system (Adobe Reader XI Version 11.0.10
and MS Window 7) and on this different computer I could print
without doing the above two changes.
I'm a bit puzzled. Why preferences on one system were not
    needed on a different system?

Here is an elaborate method of troubleshooting this problem. There may be a simpler method if anybody wants to suggest one.
There is a general technique that is helpful in this situation. I can't give you complete instructions here, and I haven't tested this with regard to bluetooth devices, but here's the gist of it.
Create a second log-on account for your music projects. Configure it so that when you log in to the new music account, the drivers needed for the Bluetooth devices don't load. You do this in System Preferences: Accounts.
When it's time to do music, log out of your usual account and onto the new one.
When you install drivers for any peripheral, you have the option of installing them "for all users" or only for the user account that is active during the installation.
This governs whether the drivers go in root/library or root/Users/your name/library.
If drivers are in root/library, they will load whenever the Mac is booted up and will run for all users.
But if drivers are loaded in root/Users/your name/library, they will only load if you log in as "your name". If you have a second account called root/Users/music account/, and you log in under that, the drivers in "your name" will not load. Get it?
To get this working right you need to be knowledgeable about moving or deleting files in the /library/ directory and subdirectories, and you need to be careful because you can unwittingly cause some damage if you are not careful.
There is also the root/System/library directory, and in general you should never mess around with anything in there or you might hose your system.
In summary, I would start by using the installer programs for your BlueTooth devices and DE-installing all drivers. Reboot. Log back in as your usual user account. Then RE-install each driver and see if the installer program gives you the OPTION to installl for all users or just for this user. Choose the latter. Then log on to your new Music account and see if the problems go away.

  • Install windows 8.1 on windows 7without external DVD-reader? - thinkpad Yoga

    Hi!
Just entered the community as i recently bought a lenovo thinkpad S1 yoga. i am very satisfied with it overall, but right now there is one thing that bothers me. It came preinstalled with windows 7. Now, i did get recovery CDs with windows 8, but i do not currently have an external DVD to make use of them. Now, my first thought was that there must be a way of installing windows 8 without the discs, because of the windows 8 sticker at the bottom of the Unit that basically says it has (had) windows 8 at some point, but i havent yet found a solution.
Would anyone know how to move on from this point? except from bying the external dvd-reader and use the CDs?
    cheers

  • No bootable device installing w7 w/ Bootcamp and external DVD reader

    Hello¡ Good night!
Lets see if anyone can help me find a solution since google, youtube and forums cant. (Wanted to call the apple support, but since my mac is from 2010, they want me to pay 19 S)
    I have a MBP 17 inch from mid 2010, with MC OS X 10.6.4.
I installed Windows 7 like 2 or 3 years ago.
Everything was working fine, didnt give a single problem. Installed it easy by doing the partition and then with the original copy of Windows 7 32 bits did it quite easy and fast. (with bootcamp)
I used Windows and mac for all this years.
Last week, I decided I wanted to format my windows partition (since it was full of trash).
I had with me my original copy of windows and the installation of mac drivers (the same cd I used to set the drivers after the first intallation. Its the original, came with the mac).
I deleted the partition from the windows on the Boot Camp assistant, and re did it. And then the nightmare started.
After I prepared the partition from the bootcamp assistant (its the 3.0.1) I select the install windows now. Then the cd dvd from my Mac Book Pro started running but after a while it shut down, pulled out my windows cd and a message on screen saying , insert an original copy of windows and click yes... .. After trying for a while I decided to put in another cd, which was doing the same. Discovery, the cd,dvd from my MBP was broken. I checked up online to see if there was a problem and I discovered that this was not something new. A lot of people was having troubles with their optical drive stopped working out of nowhere and the only solution was changing it. Thing I cant do right now, since just that costs 120 euros...
I readed in some forums that you can use an external CD DVD reader so I bought one for 20 euros (Samsung SE 208A) which works perfectly fine in all the computers, even the MC OS X reads it and I can use it perfectly.
I put my original copy from windows 7 on the CD DVD, and click start windows installation in the Boot Camp Assistant. Which just reboots the computer perfectly.
And when the windows installation is supposed to start I get a message
No Bootable device... Please insert bootable device and press any key.
I tried all the solutions I saw online, nothing worked.
Pressing Option key while startup only opens the MacintoshHD
Pressing Option key with MAC OS X installation CD and then changing it to windows. (Windows cd appears on the bootable device, I select windows and I get back to the same back screen . No bootable device)
Pressing C and selecting Windows (From the CD DVD) and restart.

Thanks for the answer, but I dont have the windows anymore...
._. I have been reading a lot of forums (which is being hard, since everyone seems to have problems and not answers).
We managed to downdload a tool called rEFIT and we are now being abled to select the windows cd, but it's giving still problems. (Changing the list data from boot camp allows it to detect other boot routes) <- starting to feel like a hacker...
    But we are still stucked.
We are trying to update my Boot camp to 3.1 (that seems to solve that problem) but for now it's being impossible, everything in the apple download website are .exe, which are the drivers ONCE you have windows INSTALLED. Clicking to Upgrade Software doesn't upgrade it.. So I'm looking into it...
I'll keep you guys informed if we manage to solve it.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Boot Camp - External DVD Reader (Mac Compatible)

    To all,
I am not able to get Boot Camp to load vista from the external CD-ROM since the internal one is totaly disconnected. It does nothing. It spins the CD when it restarts then continues on to loading the login screen.
Bare with me - this is the fun part -
I got a 24" white iMac. CD-ROM was stuck and refused to take in new CD's. Took it to Apple, they replaced it. I bring it back home 2 days later and the screen is dented. They fix that in 4 days. Now I am finally able to start installing Vista.
Put the CD in - nothing happens - it kicks it out!!!! Well - its brand new - its even a different brand than what was in there before.
I take it back to apple, i give the lady all the **** in the world because this is not supposed to happen, etc.
They decide to give me a new iMac. While I am waiting, the manager approaches me and give me the 13 cents which were found in the cd-rom drive (thanks to my kids)
So I appologize - totaly ignored her wanting $450 to replace it, so I went and bought a Sony external DVD reader, burner.
    -- Problem --
Boot Camp, Front Row + the DVD player software won't work off the external drive.
I took the mac appart - disconnected the dvd-drive from the motherboard thinking that if its not there, then boot camp will attempt to run off the external drive.
Put it back together - and rebooted - everything came up fine until using front row or the dvd player.
Boot Camp still won't read the external drive - no errors nothing - it attempts then quits and moves to the login screen.
Guys - I need help - i make my living off Windows so not having access to it - its killing me.
Please do not recommend parallels or anything else like it.
I am willing to try anything at this point. Before I go and spend $450 i will rather buy a new machine.
    HELP!!! Anyone Please!!!!

I doubt there is any way to get the external to work with the Windows install. It's magic that the internal works! However, since you are not afraid to rip the iMac apart, a Google of 'imac internal dvd drive' shows that you can get a replacement for well under $450.
