DVD reading problem

Hi, I am Leonardo and I am having problem with my CD/DVD drive.
I have a HP dv6 pavilion 1320sl with HP AD-7561s dvd drive . I can read original and recordable CD's, original dvd's but I can't read/write recordable DVD's. The hardware drivers seems to be ok according the windows messages in control panel-system. The problem starts after I installed Windows 7 Ultimate instead of original operational system Windows 7 Basic. I did that so I could change the computer language. I already installed all drivers available in the HP website for my computer  but it didn't work. I already talked to HP support here in Brazil but they do not know what to do.
Before reinstalling Windows I recorded the backup DVD's recommended for HP with the original system but now I can't read this DVD's. I can't even boot my computer from the DVD because the disc isn´t recognized.
What can I do? Could this be a hardware problem? Driver problem?
Thanks.

That would typically indicate that the mini cannot read the specific disk, and indeed may indicate that the disk involved is actually damaged, or perhaps unbalanced due to poor labeling or too thick or thin. It could also indicate that the optical drive itself may be in need of cleaning, so unless there are clear signs the disks concerned are damaged or scratched, I would suggest you try a good lens cleaner on the drive itself. If that doesn't help, and the drive increasingly rejects disks that previously worked, I would say it would seem likely to be a failing drive. In that instance, you might want to consider replacing it with an external device rather than a new internal optical drive.

  • Has anyone found a solution for fixing the dvd reading problems after installing snow leopard?

I installed snow leopard on my macpro tower and my dvd player will not read dvds. My archived dvd all come up blank but on my laptop their fine. All my other dvds are just spit out. I have seen hundreds of post about this in the forums but I haven't come across a solution. Apple told me they have never come across this issue which is disturbing to say the least.

Thanks, I did see that thread and way too many others like it. My drive was working fine up to the minute I installed snow leopard and now I can't read all my archived dvds of the last 5 years of my work. Nor will it read the training dvd "New" that I just bought. It also won't even read the iwork disc that came with snow leopard. Of course all these disc work fine on my other make that didn't get the snow leopard upgrade. Apple support told me they never heard of anything like this. I took it to the apple store and they think it the dvd drive itself. Please, it plays cds fine and accepts new dvd media...some. Countless people have had their drives go out right after the snow leopard install.
I'm sorry but what happens to a dvd player or what hardware problem happens to only allow a player to read a few dvds but all cds. Could someone explain to me what breaks. Apple saying I need to by a new dvd player from them is crazy. Why do I get the feeling that if I install snow leopard on my other machine that the dvd player will also break. How also can apple not have any record of this happening to others.
I work with windows machines and linux boxes and Macs and I'm sorry I trusted an upgrade to a mac os that has been around for a while. If I would have checked the forums the way I do with anything I work with I guarantee I would not have upgrade to snow leopard after seeing all the people out their with this issue. It is also shameful that apple says it has no knowledge of this problem.

  • T60 Model 1952 CD/DVD Read Problems

This Thinkpad was a refurb from Newegg and it is one of the ones that reads and burns CDs but only reads DVDs. For some reason, I can't get the drive to reliably read all DVDs that I put in it and I pretty much just end up hearing  the sounds of the DVDs constantly shifting back and forth until the drive just gives up reading them.
The DVDs are all in good condition with nary a scratch, so I'm not sure what the issue could be. Do I have any possible options before replacing the ultrabay?

I agree with my friend Lead_Org, you need a new drive. You might be able to get the seller to replace it, but if not I'd be glad to help. I can get these very inexpensively and would be glad to help.

  • No bootable device installing w7 w/ Bootcamp and external DVD reader

    Hello¡ Good night!
Lets see if anyone can help me find a solution since google, youtube and forums cant. (Wanted to call the apple support, but since my mac is from 2010, they want me to pay 19 S)
    I have a MBP 17 inch from mid 2010, with MC OS X 10.6.4.
I installed Windows 7 like 2 or 3 years ago.
Everything was working fine, didnt give a single problem. Installed it easy by doing the partition and then with the original copy of Windows 7 32 bits did it quite easy and fast. (with bootcamp)
I used Windows and mac for all this years.
Last week, I decided I wanted to format my windows partition (since it was full of trash).
I had with me my original copy of windows and the installation of mac drivers (the same cd I used to set the drivers after the first intallation. Its the original, came with the mac).
I deleted the partition from the windows on the Boot Camp assistant, and re did it. And then the nightmare started.
After I prepared the partition from the bootcamp assistant (its the 3.0.1) I select the install windows now. Then the cd dvd from my Mac Book Pro started running but after a while it shut down, pulled out my windows cd and a message on screen saying , insert an original copy of windows and click yes... .. After trying for a while I decided to put in another cd, which was doing the same. Discovery, the cd,dvd from my MBP was broken. I checked up online to see if there was a problem and I discovered that this was not something new. A lot of people was having troubles with their optical drive stopped working out of nowhere and the only solution was changing it. Thing I cant do right now, since just that costs 120 euros...
I readed in some forums that you can use an external CD DVD reader so I bought one for 20 euros (Samsung SE 208A) which works perfectly fine in all the computers, even the MC OS X reads it and I can use it perfectly.
I put my original copy from windows 7 on the CD DVD, and click start windows installation in the Boot Camp Assistant. Which just reboots the computer perfectly.
And when the windows installation is supposed to start I get a message
No Bootable device... Please insert bootable device and press any key.
I tried all the solutions I saw online, nothing worked.
Pressing Option key while startup only opens the MacintoshHD
Pressing Option key with MAC OS X installation CD and then changing it to windows. (Windows cd appears on the bootable device, I select windows and I get back to the same back screen . No bootable device)
Pressing C and selecting Windows (From the CD DVD) and restart.

Thanks for the answer, but I dont have the windows anymore...
._. I have been reading a lot of forums (which is being hard, since everyone seems to have problems and not answers).
We managed to downdload a tool called rEFIT and we are now being abled to select the windows cd, but it's giving still problems. (Changing the list data from boot camp allows it to detect other boot routes) <- starting to feel like a hacker...
    But we are still stucked.
We are trying to update my Boot camp to 3.1 (that seems to solve that problem) but for now it's being impossible, everything in the apple download website are .exe, which are the drivers ONCE you have windows INSTALLED. Clicking to Upgrade Software doesn't upgrade it.. So I'm looking into it...
I'll keep you guys informed if we manage to solve it.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Boot Camp - External DVD Reader (Mac Compatible)

    To all,
I am not able to get Boot Camp to load vista from the external CD-ROM since the internal one is totaly disconnected. It does nothing. It spins the CD when it restarts then continues on to loading the login screen.
Bare with me - this is the fun part -
I got a 24" white iMac. CD-ROM was stuck and refused to take in new CD's. Took it to Apple, they replaced it. I bring it back home 2 days later and the screen is dented. They fix that in 4 days. Now I am finally able to start installing Vista.
Put the CD in - nothing happens - it kicks it out!!!! Well - its brand new - its even a different brand than what was in there before.
I take it back to apple, i give the lady all the **** in the world because this is not supposed to happen, etc.
They decide to give me a new iMac. While I am waiting, the manager approaches me and give me the 13 cents which were found in the cd-rom drive (thanks to my kids)
So I appologize - totaly ignored her wanting $450 to replace it, so I went and bought a Sony external DVD reader, burner.
    -- Problem --
Boot Camp, Front Row + the DVD player software won't work off the external drive.
I took the mac appart - disconnected the dvd-drive from the motherboard thinking that if its not there, then boot camp will attempt to run off the external drive.
Put it back together - and rebooted - everything came up fine until using front row or the dvd player.
Boot Camp still won't read the external drive - no errors nothing - it attempts then quits and moves to the login screen.
Guys - I need help - i make my living off Windows so not having access to it - its killing me.
Please do not recommend parallels or anything else like it.
I am willing to try anything at this point. Before I go and spend $450 i will rather buy a new machine.
    HELP!!! Anyone Please!!!!

I doubt there is any way to get the external to work with the Windows install. It's magic that the internal works! However, since you are not afraid to rip the iMac apart, a Google of 'imac internal dvd drive' shows that you can get a replacement for well under $450.

  • DVD drive problems : should I buy the new iMac ?

Hello, being new to these discussions, I don't know if this question was answered before.
My last iMac's DVD drive stopped working after 3 years use. And from reading the discussions, this problem seemed quite common.
But 3 years is not bad, considering the posts talking about the DVD drive not working on NEW iMacs.
Does anybody know if Apple is going to do something about this soon ? My computer is a working tool, and I cannot spend time or money on repairs all the time.
    Thank you.
    A Mac user since 1985

+"Well, since nobody has an answer, I suppose I will wait until I no longer see the DVD drive problems on the discussions."+
That might be a while. I bought my iMac Oct. 15 and the DVD drive is already not responding. Backing up files, I had burned 2 DVDs from the same package, Toast says this one is a CD-RW and unwritable, and makes a noise like it's trying to eject it but nothing happens. Disk utility says the DVD drive is empty and nothing shows up in the Finder. Using Terminal (drutil eject) and starting up with the mouse button held down makes the same noise as trying to eject it in Toast, with the same results - nothing.
Still trying to find the receipt to take it back & get it repaired. I sure miss the hole for the paper clip.

  • Leopard DVD player problems

every time I launch the DVD player program it crashes instantly i've tried to restart cause I thought it might need a restart but it still does even after the restart.

I too am having DVD Player problems, though certainly not that consistently. About 1 in 10 times I start up DVD Player it will immediately dim the screen and display in front the multilingual "you must restart your computer" message. Never happened with Tiger, but that was also a different computer. Doesn't matter whether I'm playing a VIDEO_TS folder or whether I'm playing a disc, doesn't matter whether there is even a disc in the player or not. For VIDEO_TS folder doesn't seem to matter if the folder is local or on a network. Also, I have had the same effect when viewing VIDEO_TS movies through Front Row; thus I think the problem may be pretty deep in the OS's video code, perhaps even in the driver. My system has Santa Rosa motherboard with x3100 built-in graphics.

  • Dvd-reader not working with OS X

after installing maverick few months ago the build-in dvd-reader of my macbook pro has stop working
i'm not sure if this happened before the installation anyway i fastly need to use bootcamp and my computer doesn't recognize the original cd for the installation
when i insert a cd or dvd it tries tree or four times to read it (i heard the sound of the cd turning and than stopping and again) and than pop it out or just ignore it..
for some cd it seem to read it ad a empty, writable cd
i tried resetting the SMC and the Pram but didn't helped what else can i try?

ok i tryed with the card and it actually improved the situation a bit so now the comp read the dvds but still not reading most of song's cd and installation disc.
at the computer's shop there wasn't any cleaner-cd but they tried with the air and nothing changed.. i'm still oping of solving the situation with that cd (the card turn out grey from the slot O.O )  thanks for the help i was stuck in the idea of a software problem =)

  • Dvd reading in sun ultra 40

i have an ultra 40 machine with an built-in MATSHITA DVD-RAM. i also have an external dvd writer. i use the external dvd writer usually, expect for booting from the optical drive. i have a dual-boot solaris/linux on my machine. now i have want to upgrade my linux. when i try to read a dvd using the built-in drive it refuses to read the dvd (no problems with the disk). it can read only cds on this drive. what could be the problem? i had got this machine 2.5 years back, and i was able to read dvds on this machine then. i had upgraded the bios around 2 years back. is it something to do with the bios or os, or is it the different dvd-format problem. how can i confirm this? and is it possible to overcome this problem. thanks.

4.Is there any specific drivers for DVD drive.?
Experts or those who recovered from the same problem. Please Help me.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi
Maybe your CD/DVD drive is getting faulty... What do you think?
But before you think about a new drive you should remove the upper- and lowerfilters in registry. You can follow the workaround from Microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Make also sure that the lens from CD/DVD drive is clean. You can use a microfiber cloth to clean it. This cloth doesnt scratch the lens.
    Check this!!!
Last but not least there are no special drivers for CD/DVD drive. Its a part of Windows and cant be updated.

  • Help needed.. Changed HD, 'broken' DVD reader, working recovery disks.. how to?

Hello all, hope someone can help me here. I have a Toshiba Satellite p300-19f, win vista 32 in dotation.
Long story short, the computer has served me well for roughly 3 years now. All at a sudden, on startup when on windows charging page (with win logo and green counter going up), it started freezing.
I tried recovering last working win configuration, I tried recovering precedent backup points, at times I solved until the problem randomly showed up again (same identical problem), so ultimately I formatted and re-installed fresh vanilla version from recovery partition succesfully. Problem went away, until it came back. (all of this in 1 month time span)
It worked ok for a couple weeks, and started giving the same problem again. Ultimately I figured out (I immagine) that the hard drive must have some problems, as this freezing on windows startup (immediately distinguishable as the cpu stops working / the light in front stops twinkling) occured basically randomly, regardless of software installed in the pc, or time since last format.
I decided to change the hard drive, but obviously have the problem of the new operating system. My dvd burner is broken, or at least does not work reliably. I got an external sony burner and through the toshiba disk creator applet made the recovery disks (2 DVDs) successfully.
I changed the hard drive, tried to reboot and reistall using in laptop dvd, when it gets to copy the first big file it gives a CRC error, an aborts the whole thing (sending me to a prompt of commands though.. where I copied the whole content of the DVDs on the just made HDDrecovery folder in v: through the recognized usb external burner, but the computer failed to recognize on later startups). So I tried to boot it up with the recovery disks in the external burner (bios DOES support USB boot), the disks are read, the toshiba applet for recovery is started, and as soon as it gets to the dos-like windows it freezes on "check for medium in drive".
I have the recovery disks, I have a half working dvd reader in the pc that gives errors when copying the big files and aborts installation. I have an external dvd reader that is recognized at boot, starts the installation, but fails to find "the medium"...
I hope I have explained my problem more or less.. what can I do (apart from buying a new working dvd reader for the computer) ?
If there are specific info I need to give on hardware/software, please let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Slow CD/DVD Reading

When I insert a CD to rip music into iTunes, I can hear the CD spin up, but then immediately slow down again. I click the Import CD button, but then it only imports at around 3x-4x. When I first got the machine, it would import at 10x-12x and I could hear the CD spinning much faster. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't do much burning, but I have been able to successfully burn CDs at around 8x and DVDs at 2x.
Also, if the CD is just reading data, as when I look at a CD full of pictures, it is again very slow and never really spins up to full speed, so I don't think the speed problems are related to iTunes. Any suggestions?

  • DVD reader fails, VLC succeeds

    Hello there,
I found no topic in direct relation with this. I have an iBook G4 with its Radeon Mobility 9200. The system is up to date (10.4.7) When I play DVD such as commercial movies, DVD reader app (last version) make it scratchy, slow, as if the machine itself were ready to die. But when I play it with VLC, it works fine.
As VLC doesn't need hardware acceleration, I suspect it's a problem with the video card. But no other app reacts like this. So again I suspect the GPU driver to be faulty.
Has anyone already met this trouble?
    Any idea to fix this?
    Yours,
    Fabinho

    Hello etresoft,
I can hear that. But still I am not convinced : I do not say that VLC is better than DVD Player, I say DVD Player should just run the DVD playback. It does not. Maybe when I can copare both on this very machine I can tell you "heh this one runs better than that one", but I can't understand that a stock app from Apple just doesn't do the job. Be it a good or a poor job, I need a job to be done.
    Yours,
    Fabinho
