DVD region change?

Hi, I have a brand new powerbook g4, 1.67ghz, superdrive. I just recently put a DVD in it for the first time, and it asked "what region do you want to set the drive to?" It gave me the option of 1 and 4, I think. Anways, I chose 1, because I had no idea what this meant.
Now, heres what happens: When I try to play store-bought DVD's, they wont play! The weird thing is, when I played a pirated DVD from South America, it worked fine!
How do I change the drive region, and when region do I need to change it to so that it will play all my DVDs???? Before the powerbook I had an ibook, and it would play all the DVDs I had with no problem...

To have your store bought DVDs play you need to look at the back of the cover. On it your will find the region code of the DVD. It sort of looks like a number inside a world map.
As mentioned you really need to be careful with regoin codes as you can only make this change 5 times. Once you have reached that limit you are stuck with the last region you chose.
It is recommended that you either buy DVDs from one region otherwise you can buy an external DVD drive which has a firmware update avaiable for it so you can change the region of the drive as much as you like. Before you ask, there currently is no firmware update for your internal optical drive. Even if there was it would void your warranty.

  • Error 70001 when changing DVD region (changes still allowed)

I still have allowable DVD region changes left on DVD player, but when I try to apply a region change, error message 70001 appears.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem? I've looked on various online forums and tried using VLC - but this doesn't work - and used MacTheRipper to no avail either.

Are you sure the DVD is region 1 ONLY? You can't always trust the label. I have a three DVD boxed set that says region 1. One of the DVDs is multiple region.

  • DVD region change isn't needed anymore?

When i first got my macbook pro i set the dvd region to 4 not allowing to play some of my dvds which were region 1 which was fine as i didn't want to use up 1 of the 5 times to change the region.
I only watched region 4 dvds and whenever i inserted a dvd with region 1 the screen came up asking if i wanted to change the region so i could play the dvd, i always declined.
I recently got dvds which are region 4 and they are also region 'all'.
I then got a new dvd which was region 1 and i thought i would just try it out and i put it in and it automatically started playing and the screen never came up asking me to change my region.
I thought it would be just that dvd but now all my other region 1 dvds work as well.
I thought maybe i did accidentally change it to region 1 but my region 4 dvds also work without asking me to change the dvd region.
I was wondering if by doing this, if it is still using up the 5 changes allowed?
Or if it isn't as the screen is not coming up anymore and that i'm free to play any dvd now?

    wayne.jensen,
you could download, install, and run DVD Info X 3 to find out the region change status of your SuperDrive.

  • Dvd region changes? Is it possible to reset after I maxed out my chances?

I changed my dvd region for the last time by mistake and now it is stuck on that. Is it possible to change the dvd region?

    Sorry, no.
Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.

Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed.
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

  • Dvd region change limit

So I travel to Europe frequently, and while I'm there I often want to watch a movie in my hotel room, so I get a DVD from a local store, but then of course I have to change the region. I get home, insert another DVD from here and have to change the region again. I've only had my new MBP about 6 weeks, and already I've used up my limit, so I can no longer watch movies when I go abroad.
I tried changing the default action when I insert the disc, to open with VLC, but it just gives me a white screen or a crash. So do I really have to go into an Apple service centre every couple of months to get it reset for me, or can I just not watch DVDs abroad any more?
I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is here, but just in case...

The reset limit is 3x. Some models of DVD drives in Macs can have their firmware updated to be region free. While it's perfectly legal, using a non-Apple firmware will render the drive out-of-warranty.
Some models cannot be updated. For those, you can can obtain a replacement drive that can be made region free.
Note that drive makers are required by the terms of the DVD-CSS requirements to enable region coding in their firmware by default. The World Intellectual Property Organization prohibits members (like the US and Britain) from making laws requiring enforcement region coding schemes (as they pose a barrier to free trade), but that has no bearing on the agreements between drive makers and the DVD-CSS. This is why most drives are sold with region code enforcement turned on, but many distributors and resellers remove it (in Europe and Asia, anyway).

  • Will software restore allow DVD region change?

    Hi All,
I've been offered a 14" iBook G3 900 in decent condition (immaculate display). However, the DVD is set to the wrong region and cannot be changed as the 5 changes have been used up.
If I do a complete system restore of 10.4.11 will it reset the DVD so I can change it? I know this is an old issue, but I've been given conflicting advice so just wanted confirmation.
    Many thanks.

    Hi, that's what I thought.
Someone suggested I 'flash' the drive but I've read that can kill it completely.
I thought VLC doesn't always support any-region viewing? Does it depend on the hardware?
Yes it depends on the hardware.

  • Change DVD region on external DVD Player

I have a DVD player that was set to region 1. It now is not. It says that I have 3 DVD region changes left (yeah, I know you only get 5). I don't know how it changed to a different region, but now I need it to change back to region 1, so I can watch movies again. I have a samsung external dvd player. Any suggestions?

    Hi V
Yes there are several possible origins to this:
    • burning the DVD with x16 speed often gives so much errors that they doesnt work
    • using a cheap brand - same
    • wrong type of DVD
    • to little free space on internal (start-up) hard disk
    1. I make a DiskImage then use Toast™ to burn with x1 speed (one can use Apple Disk Util tool to do this - in iDVD08 one can select burn-speed)
    2. I use Verbatim DVD-R
    3. I use -R no +R or +/-RW disks
    4. iDVD needs 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. 10Gb might work but slow.
<5Gb if it reaches to goal - most probably an useless DVD disk is the result.

  • Qosmio G20: How to change the DVD region code?

My DVD is locked into region 1 is there anyway to fix this because I need it to be on region 2.
I have been using it on the correct region which is 2 but for some unknown reason it has locked onto region 1 not allowing me to make any changes.

    Jeffrey speaks well.
However, you must to right click My Computer -> property -> hardware -> device manager ->
dvd/cdrom drivers -> double/click your drive -> dvd region/tab and if you have some
remained possibilities, you can choose region 2.
    Bye

It may be possible to make your Matshita Superdrive region-free by the methods describe here:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=43082
but please note: you USE THE SOFTWARE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!. The operation isn't officially allowed or sanctioned, which you're supposed to know when you do it.
To make any free=standing DVD player region free, go here:

In the meantime you can use VLC to play DVDs from any region.

  • How can I change the DVD regional settings?

I have changed my regional settings more than the required times and they cannot be changed any more so l cannot watch some of the dvd's l have.how can l fix it to be multi regional dvd player?

    Hi Sam,
Once the allowed number of region changes has been reached you will need to flash the firmware in your DVD player in order to reset the region count. You can try to Google for the required update for your make/model of DVD ROM or you can check with a Toshiba Service Agent to see if they can arrange this for you.

  • PowerDVD changed my DVD region! (Can I get back to Region Free?)

Sorry to bother you, but I have a problem and I'm hoping you can assist me.  I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkPad T530.  The first time I put in a DVD (Region 1), PowerDVD told me it couldn't play because it was the wrong region.  It listed my drive region as "FREE" and that the DVD required Region 1.  It asked me the question, "Are you sure you want to change your region?"  I did NOT want to change the region from "FREE" to "1".  I read the question several times to make sure I didn't misunderstand the question and hit the wrong button.  I clicked NO.  However, it changed my DVD Region!  Now it's listed at Region 1 in Windows 8 Device Manager!  Why would it do this?  Please tell me this is just a software setting from PowerDVD, and that it hasn't changed my drive region in the Firmware.  If it's been changed in the drive firmware, how can I set it back to region free?  Thank you for your help.
    Solved!

In some versions of software, "free" means that no region has been assigned yet and that you must identify a region on startup.

  • Qosmio G30: Cannot chang the DVD region settings

I have a G30 and appear to have reset the dvd region using Qosmio rather than Windows MC.
When I try to reset the dvd region (back to region 2) Windows MC says there is one change remaining but then does not let me change, advising me that I have the incorrect region media in the drive (I don't)or I do not have administrator rights (I do).

Where did you check the drive region settings?
Did you check it in the drive properties or somewhere else?
In my opinion you have already used all region change attempts and the changing is no more possible.

  • Changing DVD region settings

Hello! I just got my MacBook Pro today and I am trying to watch DVD's on it. For some reason it is not allowing me to change the DVD region. Since I just got it today I obviously haven't had to change the region so I should still have my 5 times to change it. The option to change to region 1 is available,  however the button to confirm is grey? I don't have a DVD player so this is my only way to watch! HELP!
