DVD Region issue

Just inserted a purchased (legitimately) DVD. The disk cannot be played becsue it does not match the region of the computer. It says that the region code can no longer be changed. I am in Australia. I believe it is region 4 here.
This is my girfirend's computer, she says she has never seen a message like that before and has never had to change the region of the DVD player. Hmmm. I give her the benefit of doubt for this. She/we just want the MacBook to be set to region 4 so we can view local region movies.
In any case, from the posts I have read there seem to be work-arounds, ligitimate, iligitimate, and some are just plain misguided and presumptuous.
I have some questions that I hope can be answered:
1: Is there software, or an Apple dialogue box, (there once was) that allows you to set the region code, even it is for the last time? Please note, Apple Help menu says to change the code by inserting a disk from the region you want, however simply inserting a disk won't do it because the computer says the region code is not changeable.
2:VLC media player is recommended in other posts for playing movies. Will it really bypass the Mac Region Code settings so it will allow Regiond Code 4 movies to be played? I am of the belief that VLC does not bypass region coding at all.
3: Will apple tech support set the DVD player to our local region I can't fix it myself?

I would either call AppleSupport or use VLC, i have no experience of it but other posts suggest it will bypass the Region coding on drives.
Did your G/F buy the Macbook from new? If not there is a chance the Region coding was changed before she purchased it.

  • Is MacBook Pro's DVD Region Free?

I was about to order a Region 3 DVD but then I realized that my MacBook may not be able to read that... Can MacBook Pro read Region 3 DVDs?
I bought my MacBook Recently almost right after apple introduced Intel Duo Macbook Pro...

DVD region selection is an issue you should be careful with.
I had selected region2 as I was going to be using only 2 region dvds but later on moving to India where there are so many region dvd's available I am confused how to get my DVD player work.
Out here on the forum users have suggested using VLC player to BYPASS the region on DVD player but on my 3month old Macbook Pro the VLC is not running any of the dvd. It is giving me weird error. (cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1') Dont know what it means.
Good luck with your dvd viewing.

  • Mounted DVD image region different to inserted DVD region

    Hello,
My DVD is set to 'Region 4' to play Australian DVD's. I created an image of a DVD using the 'DVD/CD Master' image format in order to make a backup DVD.
Issue: When I open it in the standard DVD player software, I'm prompted to change FROM 'Region 1' (which I never chose.) If I re-insert the DVD, it plays without a hitch.
I don't want to start changing regions unless I have to. Can anyone make an informative suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Carlo

What Király has said is correct so you shouldn't get this message. My guess is that the software you used for creating the backup automatically designated it as region 1 (USA). Why you have to re-insert it to get it to play I don't know.
One proviso to what we've said is that if you bought your Mac overseas the Australian legislation won't apply and you would be caught in the zone change limitations.

  • Leopard ejects DVDs Region 0 from USB drive that is region specific

This is against region specification standards. Region 0 is universal region that by spec is supposed to be played in any player in the world.
I think it is a bug because Leopard cannot handle external/USB DVD players properly. The issue is new and Tiger does not have it.
After opening case for another DVD movie related issue I am planning to open now whole bunch of them. The choices by Apple engineers are strange and might not follow paper written standards unfortunatelly.
    Sincerely,
    Maciej Samsel

I have more precise results of recent tests:
    1. USB drive ejects poor (errors by media company producing region 0 DVDs?) region 0 DVD. USB drive is unlocked RPC-2 (still changes of region available). Other DVD region 0 is mounted. It is not systems fault. It is behavior of this particular DVD drive. Same drive tested under Tiger and Leopard.
    2. Same movie and/or region 1 and region 2 movie mounts in another USB drive that is region free (RPC-1), but menu icons blink and clock vanishes. Icons are not accessible so when DVD (only DVD, because music CDs or data DVDs/CDs do not cause that) is mounted on your desktop forget ability to disable/enable wireles network, Blootooth, VPN, use spotlight or go to another account.

  • About changing the dvd region

sir, despite my every effort i am unable to change the dvd region of my lenovo 3000 N 100. what i do?

DVD region codes can be changed for only five times after that it cannot be changed.
The DVD Writer will not be able to play a disc with any region code other than the last one it is set. You can check the region code that you have set by using the following steps.
Right-click “My Computer” and select “Properties”. On the “Hardware” tab, click “Device Manager”. Now double-click DVD/CD-ROM drives and click on the DVD region tab.

  • Freezing discs and region issues

    Hi,
Creating Wedding vids in FCP6, using compressor to make M2v's on dual layer discs (imation).
Using DVDsp4.2 to make the discs. Clients all happy, but I've had two clients come back to me 10-12 months later saying their discs are freezing in the middle / latter parts, they can't fast forward or skip chapters, etc. They aren't scratched, they were encoded as best encode 150 minutes 2 pass.
Any suggestions greatly accepted. Also, I've selected all regions in DVDsp, but stuff I send to the UK won't play there.

    Welcome to the Boards
Freezes and stalls can often be due to high bandwidth or bad burns/bad media. Verbtaim DL is usually what I use (and so do others around here). If the DVDs were playing and then developed an issue it could still be bad media/dirt/scratches even if the scratches are not seen. When was the layer break in the project, is it right at the spot where it is freezing? I know you mentioned middle, but the break may not be there...
Note that if the video track is long (3 hours 10 minutes or so) a couple of players can act strangely.
    Media info here
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
As to the Region issue are they getting a Region Warning or a PAL/NTSC warning, it would probably be the later I would guess...

  • ITunes for 64bit Windows 7 Driver/CD/DVD/Drive Issues-

    Hi There
I am sure that there are many many users out there suffering the same frustration as me in regard to ITunes just not working properly with Windoews 7 (64Bit).
I have been trying to solve the mystery of "ITunes for Windows Registry Settings Warning When Opening Itunes.
I have tried all the recommended actions to correct this problem without any success and I do mean ALL.
Below is a screen shot of my registry, can anyone see anything wrong with it?
In the meantime (Last four months) I have stopped using ITunes and instead have used Digital 7, this will be my very last attempt to get ITunes working properly, failure will mean consigning ITunes to the same place as any other Software that does not do wshat it says on the can.
    I hope someone can help.

That's good that it is in device manager, but what about in Computer with the rest of the drivers?
Also, are the drives listed in Computer and device manager or just device manager?
I want to verify if the symptoms are present for a particular software issue before looking at other issues.  I really doubt it is a driver issue at this point.  If it was, then I suspect the issue would be present from day one.
It could be that the lens has dust buildup preventing it from working properly.  They do make CD cleaning kits that have a special CD designed to clean the laser as it passes over the lens.  If you happen to have one of these, or access to one, I recommend trying this step to make sure it isn't as simple as dust buildup interfering with the laser.
It could also be hardware failure, but I would like to try a few other steps before coming to that conclusion.
It may be worth reviewing this document as it covers a lot of the most common issues behind DVD drive issues. Feel free to skip any steps you have already tried.
    Let me know what happens.

  • Qosmio G20: How to change the DVD region code?

My DVD is locked into region 1 is there anyway to fix this because I need it to be on region 2.
I have been using it on the correct region which is 2 but for some unknown reason it has locked onto region 1 not allowing me to make any changes.

    Jeffrey speaks well.
However, you must to right click My Computer -> property -> hardware -> device manager ->
dvd/cdrom drivers -> double/click your drive -> dvd region/tab and if you have some
remained possibilities, you can choose region 2.

    Sorry, not possible.
Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.

It may be possible to make your Matshita Superdrive region-free by the methods describe here:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=43082
but please note: you USE THE SOFTWARE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!. The operation isn't officially allowed or sanctioned, which you're supposed to know when you do it.
To make any free=standing DVD player region free, go here:
    http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/
In the meantime you can use VLC to play DVDs from any region.

  • Can dvd region setting restore by reinstalling mac os?

I am currently using Mbp and have a dvd drive "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867" with Firmware Revision: HA13. Currently set as region 3. Can i restore the number of chances of changing dvd regions to "no regions is set" by reinstalling mac os?

Note that RegionX only works with a region-free drive. Most Mac drives are not region-free; you can determine the status of yours by downloading this utility:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16366/
If your drive is indeed region-locked; there's probably little or nothing you can do. I have not seen any region-lock hacks for any recent SuperDrives.

  • Error 70001 when changing DVD region (changes still allowed)

I still have allowable DVD region changes left on DVD player, but when I try to apply a region change, error message 70001 appears.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem? I've looked on various online forums and tried using VLC - but this doesn't work - and used MacTheRipper to no avail either.

Are you sure the DVD is region 1 ONLY? You can't always trust the label. I have a three DVD boxed set that says region 1. One of the DVDs is multiple region.

  • Is new Macbook dvd region free or not?

Want to buy one, but concern the dvd reigon lock.

Re: Is new Macbook dvd region free or not?
NO it is not region free.
However I have flashed my drive to be region free (RPC1).
It depends which model of drive shipped with your macbook has got region free firmware out there.
you can get region free (RPC1) firmware for lots of drives from the dangerous brothers
    http://tdb.rpc1.org/
I had to run windows xp using bootcamp on my macbook in order to flash the DVD drive.
Please beaware that flashing your drive will invalidate its warrantly and you should only follow a flash procedure if you can afford to replace the drive should something go wrong. That being said I have been flashing dvd drives since 1999 and have never broken a drive.

  • Third party DVD player issues

Recently, I have come across an issue playing back DVD's with
VLC or XBMC. When I start playback of the DVD, it plays the first
segment ( the studio leader at the beginning) and will then just quit.
Apple's DVD Player works fine (quality is crappy and can't get surround
tracks out of it). Yet, when the DVD is ripped to the hard drive and
played from there, it is works just fine.
Also, this happens when the DVD is played back from an internal
    or external drive.
Has anyone else seen this issue or do I have a unique problem?

My unit is a 2010 MacMini with HDMI. (see list)
The quality issues with Apple DVD player vs. other solutions are certain
scenes have a graininess akin to noise on old analog tv's that aren't
present on the other players and severe banding in gradients that
do not appear in other players, at least when they were working.
As far as the audio, selection in the DVD's menu itself just makes no difference.
Tried all the combinations of messing with Audio MIDI setup, third party
plugins like Perian, none of which work for Apple's DVD player. This was
the other reason for going to third party players, the higher quality video
    was just a bonus.
Your point has been taken that it may be a software issue with the third party players.
Some update at some point may have broken them, be it OSX or their own.
I've beaten the Apple DVD player issue enough, let's just consider the topic dead.
The audio issues with it are spread over many, many threads across the web, with
no silver bullet solution to all.
As for BluRays, play them back all the time on my Mini. Either with
    PowerDVD 10 in a Bootcamp windows7 when I want full DTS-HD or
TRUE HD decoding (decodes these to up to 24 bit,192kHz 7.1 since the
Mini chipset does not have the "protected" path for pass through of
these technologies) or a MakeMKV/XBMC combo in OSX. The OSX
solution doesn't give you the fancy menus and all or HD audio if present,
but if I only want to watch the movies it's fine. If I ever do want the other
nonsense, I just use PowerDVD 10. And please note this is BluRay disk
in player, not "ripped" or transcoded.
I do appreciate your help, but was primarily curious if others had issue
    as well.
