DVD removal

Not paying attention, I inserted a small (sub-sized) DVD into my MacBook Pro and cannot get it out.
With restart or shutdowns, it tries unsuccessfully to eject.  Dumb but what can I do?

  • Satellite Pro A120: How to remove the CD/DVD drive

    I have 2 main problems and can't seems to fully open case.
    Does anyone know how to remove the dvd-rom?
    But my mainproblem is the power swith ribbon (blue) has come loose from the motherboard. But as i can't fully open the case im using tweezers to try to recconect it.
    Doesn't seem to want to go in.
    Is there a clip on the motherboard connector or is it just push in? A photo or diagram would be useful.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks

    One question; why do you do this?
    I mean why your want to open the notebook?
    Fact is that the Pro A120 Satellite is not a old notebook and I presume the warranty is valid.
    If you remove the notebook covers you will lose the warranty!!!
    The CD/DVD removing is very easy.
    Usually it is secured with one screw which can be found at the bottom of the unit. You have to remove it firstly and then it should be able to take off the ODD.

  • Aperture 2.1.2 crashing constantly, will not allow me to move library/ create vaults

    Hi, I've searched for threads on this, but nothing came up with my particular situation. First, I'll state my specs
    iMac 24" (aluminum)
    3.06GHz Core2 Duo
    4GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    So, after much procrastinating, I decided this weekend that I would organize my photos better, and move my growing Aperture library off my internal drive in hopes of speeding up my recently lagging computer. I migrated from iPhoto to Aperture back in August of 2008 and have always been meaning to make a vault of all my old work and just store that offsite somewhere so I don't have to worry about the disk space or losing the files. But I never got around to it.
    So now my Aperture library is 35,000 photos large, and weighs in at 302GB.
    The first thing I tried to do (before I even knew Aperture was going to start crashing) was to move the Aperture Library file from its default location in the users/pictures folder to one of my external 1.5TB drives. However, the transfer would fail around 6GB in and say "some files could not be read or written." I tried several times to no avail.
    Giving up that route, I read around online and decided that I could just make a vault of my entire library on the external drive, then create a new library there, and restore from the vault.
    So I open Aperture to try and make a vault. It "unexpectedly quits" right when the interface loads. I tried again and got as far as naming the new vault, then it crashed again. Now it crashes even if I am trying to just view my images. I went on a short roadtrip with friends and got back last night, and it crashed halfway through the import of 400 images, but finished importing when I reopened it. I don't know if that's what started off the whole thing.
    Anyway, I noticed that I only had 4(!)GB of space left on my internal drive, so I did some quick cleaning and rearranging to external drives and freed up about 45GB of space. I figured that would give the app plenty of room to breathe.
    Nope. Still crashes.
    Rebooted several times, no help.
    Reset PRAM several times, nada.
    I am in real trouble here. I'm a photography student with three studio classes this quarter and I can't have this happening. I paid top dollar for this machine less than six months ago and now it's puttering along like it's 2 or 3 years old. When Aperture is open (when it would still work) the rest of the computer would just slow to a crawl. I have 4GB of RAM, why doesn't Aperture use more? I was reading that it would only use 1 or 2GB max. Why?
    But that part is not important.
    I need to get this fixed, so ANY help is GREATLY appreciated! I have the crash report saved from the last crash, so if anyone wants to see any part of it, let me know. It told me which thread caused the crash but it looked like generic usage stuff, nothing special (I was just trying to look at my trip photos).
    Thanks in advance,
    Screaming in Savannah
    (Chris)

    This is awkward. Right... I have used Aperture since it came out.
    In fact, after all these failures, you should try the rebuilding your library first.
    Hold down Option and Command when launching Aperture, though you couldn't back up your files... which was recommended by Apple before you rebuild it.
    It should correct and repair any broken links or permissions. See if it works.
    After, you can simply COPY and not MOVE the library to the external HD. Do you use Firewire? It's much better and reliable. After the library is copied, point Aperture to use the external HD in preference. Close and reopen, it should open the library from the external HD.
    The better bet is to make sure you are using an external HD with Firewire 800. I have some experience with USB2 drives when Aperture crashes a lot. It may seem some kind of bandwidth problem which I couldn't understand. It seems find with small jpg files but if you start importing RAW or do something with the RAW files, USB drives always fail.
    I have moved my library to an external drive since Aperture 2 as my library has grown beyond the internal capacity. My standard practice is now, after working the files, export them in TIFF or JPG, export the 'Project' with the RAW files to DVDs, remove from the library and re-import the JPGs back to keep the library size. Also I keep two faults in separate locations.
    I hope it works.

  • W520 power supply rating vs. performance question

    I have had a W520 with the i2820 processor option and the quadro 1000 video for over 3 weeks now. I bought several spare 170 watt power bricks for it, but in one location I kept the 135 watt brick from my W510.
    When I moved from the w500 to the w510, when I used a 90 watt w500 brick, the w510 would boot with a BIOS level message that said that the power supply was not adequate and that the machine would be stepped down to a slower speed. The reduction in performance was dramatic and noticable. (The w510 had the 45 watt consumption i920 chip and the more power hungry graphics)
    When I use or boot the w520 with the 135 watt supply, there is no message. My benchmarks do not change from those registered when on the 170 watt power supply, starting with the Win 7 system benchmarks for processor and video. Further, the 135 watt brick is cooler to the touch than the 170 watt one under sustained usage (3 hours plus).
    The question: given that the w520 in my configuration seems to draw less power than the hot and hungry w510, is the 135 watt supply going to work "as well as" the 170 watt one? As a briefcase lugger, any way to shed weight is valued.
    Other considerations: I have no WWAN card installed, and have the CD/DVD removed and substituted with an SSD. The main drive is also SSD, bringing down somewhat the power requirements.

    I remember another post, that I can't seem to find now, which refers to a software utility that displays wattage being consumed by the system.  This would be quite helpful.
    Couldn't that be used to study what is being used, and how much of a power adapter is needed to operate the system?
    I am trying to come up with a solution for vehicle usage, and I am afraid, it will have to be a 12V to 120v power inverter with a brick plugged into it.
    Another factor will be the amount of power consumed when recharging the internal 9cell battery and the external 9cell slice. Doing this while operating the system with WiFi / WWAN active will increase the demand.

  • Songs not playing complete in itunes

    I have songs in itunes that are complete but only a short piece of them play? Once transfered to my ipod, the short piece is all that plays as well?
    Help

    I was having a similar problem in that nothing would happen when I selected some of my songs to play. The file was in the itunes music folder, and all the info was correct but it would not play. Finally, I had to copy the songs which would not play to a DVD, remove the DVD from the drive and restart iTunes. Then when I selected the same songs to play I got the message that the "song was not available, did I want to locate it." I selected "yes", reinsterted the DVD and browsed to the song. After reimporting each of the songs I selected "Consolidate the library" to copy all the songs back into the itunes music folder.
    This is definitely a time consuming process but at least now all my songs play. Also, I am backing up my library to a new set of DVD's because I want to be sure to have all of my music backed up.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I put a picture in my gui?

    Can anyone tell me how to put a picture in my gui?
    Thank you

    Someone used my code before I added this new stuff. They took it word for word.
    I apologize if you are getting frustrated with me. Please know I am working very hard on this. Learning Java in just a few weeks to me is impossible so I wil take all the help i can get. I know it must seem very easy to you because you know it very well but I am just learning, maybe you can remember back to when you were learning?
    Anyways i tried this code but it did not work. I didn't get any errors when compiling but nothing showed.:
    JLabel label = new JLabel ( new ImageIcon("test.gif"));
        f.getContentPane().add(label, BorderLayout.NORTH);Here is my code but please keep in mind that alot of it has comments because I have not actually worked on the code for it yet. Just getting the buttons set up is where I am at.
    I really wish that i could look at the examples and just have it be easy to code from it. I tried and I tried and sometimes I can get it but sometimes I just can't.

    Now that you've renamed the folder, you just need to install a clean copy of Firefox.
    If you don't have a working browser on the broken computer, you can download it on the computer you are chatting on now:
    # Download the right version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html (Probably the US English version for Windows)
    # When the file is saved, copy it to a flash drive, recordable CD/DVD, removable hard drive, digital camera card, or other disk.
    # Take this disk to the computer where you renamed the folder, insert it, then run "Firefox Setup 3.6.7.exe" on this computer. Follow the steps to complete the install.

  • No Images in Navigation Entries

    I see there are image attributes for navigation bar entries and I have set them, but only the text label shows up in my navigation bar. I've looked at the templates, but it only shows a #BODY# substitution string, so I can't see how the entries are constructed. Does anyone know how to get the template to use the images when specified? Thanks.

    Hi Julian,
    If a file has 'missing file (yellow question mark) badge' on it then it indicates- that particular file (or set of files) is either renamed, moved, deleted from (outside the knowledge of organizer). But as mentioned in this post 'external hard drive' presents itself as an internal drive (not as a removable drive), so if you detach your external hard drive then files imported from the external drive will be shown missing.
    If a file has 'offline (red button similar to shutdown icon on windows) badge' on it, it indicates- that particular files (or set of files) were improrted from a CD/DVD/removable drive (flash drive)/network drive. Once you connect the drive the red badge would be gone.
    Coming to your question: Yes, you can do anything in organizer (tagging, creating album, searching) except editing and sharing.
    Let me know if have any queries.

  • No images in My Catalog after loading them

    I'm new to Photoshop and recently bought Elements 10. After reading through as much as possible I began; installation was fine, as was uploading the images stored in folders on an external hardrive. When I started up the computer the following day, however, there were no images in My Catalog anymore, only a number of random folders from my internal drive which I don't believe I'd uploaded in the first place. As I'm still not entirely sure whether I have to be connected to the hard drive where the images are stored solely to use the organiser I connected to that as well, but again there were no photos. At the bottom left of the organiser page I'm told there are unshown images, a number corresponding exactly to the number of photos I'd uploaded the previous day. I have made sure that all is showing in View. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong? Thanks...

  • Q: How to make complete backup of internal HD?

    I want to upgrade to a bigger HD and want to make a backup of the full 80GB internal drive.
    When using Disk Utility I can make images of folders but not of the internal HD.
    I even can not make that image if I have booted from DVD or from external Firewire disk! Why?
    I also cannot unmount the internal HD when booted from external HD or DVD.
    why?
    How should I make a complete update (including all invisible files and folders)?

    ####### SUCCESS ###########
    Thank you to all who provided valuable knowledge here.
    From the many methods suggested above, I chose to try the CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I let CCC make an image of my internal HD onto my external HD. (Oddly enough this only works if you boot from the internal HD, or, better said, in order to use CCC you have to boot from the source HD, not destination HD, which IMHO would be saver, but then.)
    Despite I logged in as admin I had to give the admin password for every top level folder, about 20 in my case, a bit tedious, because you can not go away but have to stay near the computer all the time while it is copying. It lastet 3 hours...
    Then I booted from the Tiger DVD and verified that the image was mountable, and error free. Also the repair section of the disk utility allowed to specify the new image as source, and the internal HD as destination. So I was well prepared.
    Today I got my new HD (yippie!!!! 120 GB in my PowerBook!!!!) and when back home I booted from DVD, started disk utility again, repair section, and set the CCC-image as source, the new internal disk as destination, and go!
    After exactly one hour the block transfer was complete.
    I rebooted with external disk and DVD removed.
    But shock! The Mac did not find a system disk! Why this?
    I rebooted from DVD, and set the internal disk explicitely as start volume.
    Okay that was what was necessary, the next reboot from the internal new disk was successfull.
    Thanks again for all the help.
    (Just to be save I bought an external HD case for the old HD so if it had not worked this way I would have had still other options, like booting from the external HD and using CCC for directly moving the HD content to the new internal disk, but I am glad that the straightforward way just worked.)

  • MacBook Air (A1304) - Disk Problem

    Hi,
    I have this machine:
    tro Date:
    October 14, 2008
    Disc Date:
    June 8, 2009
    Model No:
    A1304 (EMC 2253*)
    Subfamily:
    Late 2008
    Model ID:
    MacBookAir2,1
    Std RAM:
    2 GB
    Std VRAM:
    256 MB
    Std Storage:
    120 GB (4200 RPM)
    Std Optical:
    None*
    For a while it’s been very slow to boot up (~25 minutes), however a few days ago I borrowed an external DVD, removed everything I could and proceeded to reinstall the OS.
    This appears to work ok, but it'll now not restart (flickers between the logo and prohibited sign).  I tried booting to the console but its displays the following error message:
    "error loading kernel ' mach_kernel' (0x7).
    Lastly I then popped the install DVD back in and ran Disk utility and that reports 'The drive has reported a fatal hardware error' - so I guess unless I'm missing something obvious it needs a new hard drive?
    This is quite old now, so I don't want to spend lots on a repairs, so my questions are this:
    1. Can the hard drive be safely swapped out by a non authorised tech?
    2. What hard drives are compatible with this one? (UK links appreciated)
    Many Thanks,
    Jerry

    I have had this same problem. Has the wifi worked before? What I did was I turned my wifi off, then I restarted my computer, then I turned my wifi back on. If that doesnt work, leave the wifi off, and shut it down for a while. Hope I could help!

  • QT 7.3 will not allow me to move, rename or delete QT movies

    Hello, I just recently upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2 and QuickTime 7.3. I can watch QT movies, but I can't move, rename or delete them. I get a message saying that the file is being used by another program or user. I have shut down all QT programs and used Task manager to shut down anything else that might be using the movie file. I have removed QT from my startup, and set all file associations except for QT movies to other programs. But still the only way I can manage .mov files is to completely uninstall QT 7.3. Please let me know how to fix this.
    Thanks, SDC

  • WGM / MCX backup plan

    I'm configuring my first Xserve, which will only be used for client management (MCX).
    I'm formulating a disaster recovery plan, and am mostly concerned with recovering all the tedious work I'll put into managed prefs.
    Where is all the Workgroup Manager groups and MCX related configuration reside?
    Is it simply all in the OD Database, which is easily backed up from the OD service > Archive tab?
    thanks,
    Darrin

    you can also use the mcx extensions of dscl to export/import the settings. here's a brief rundown of the mcx specific options (from dscl -mcxhelp):
    MCX Extensions:
    -mcxread <record path> [optArgs] [<appDomain> [<keyName>]]
    -mcxset <record path> [optArgs] <appDomain> <keyName> [<mcxDomain> [<keyValue>]]
    -mcxedit <record path> [optArgs] <appDomain> <keyPath> [<keyValue>]
    -mcxdelete <record path> [optArgs] [<appDomain> [<keyName>]]
    -mcxexport <record path> [optArgs] [<appDomain> [<keyName>]]
    -mcximport <record path> [optArgs] <file path>
    -mcxhelp
    The <record path> specifies which record in the directory node is to be operated
    on (i.e. '/Users/mcx1'). This parameter is always required, but if you are in
    interactive mode, you can use '.' to mean 'current directory' (the directory
    that was last set using the 'cd' command).
    The <appDomain> parameter is something like 'com.apple.dock'
    The <keyName> parameter is something like 'tilesize'
    The <keyPath> parameter is a path to a sub-plist within an existing key value.
    For example 'mount-controls:dvd:1' means the 2nd element within the array with
    the key name 'dvd' within the key called 'mount-controls'
    The <mcxDomain> is the type of management applied to the key. Legal values are:
    'none' (not managed)
    'always'
    'once'
    'often'
    'unset'
    The <keyValue> is the new value to be used for a key. This parameter can be
    specified using the same syntax as used by the 'defaults' command line tool.
    NOTE: When specifying plist or xml values, you will need to enclose the parameter
    in single quotes. For example:
    dscl ... '(authenticate, eject)'
    dscl ... '<real>64.0</real>'
    The MCX extensions follow the same syntax as other dscl comamnds and follow
    the same authentication rules as dscl commands. They can be used in both
    interactive and command-line modes (with exceptions noted below). For example:
    Local command-line example
    $ dscl . mcxread /Users/mcxtest com.apple.dock tilesize
    $ dscl -u admin -P apple . mcxset /Users/mcxtest com.apple.dock tilesize always -float 32
    Local interactive example
    $ dscl
    cd /NetInfo/Users/mcxtest
    mcxread . com.apple.dock =
    ** for write-based commands you must first 'cd' to the appropriate node and then issue the 'auth' command **
    cd /NetInfo/Users/mcxtest
    auth admin apple
    mcxset . com.apple.dock tilesize always -float 32
    Remote command-line example
    $ dscl -u diradmin -P apple 10.0.116.132 mcxread /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1/Users/phd1 = =
    NOTE: It's not currently possible to use commands (e.g. 'mcxset') that require write access
    to the node remotely due to Radar 4122565
    Remote interactive example
    $ dscl -u diradmin -P apple 10.0.116.132
    mcxread /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1/Users/phd1 com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
    ** for write-based commands you must first 'cd' to the appropriate node and then issue the 'auth' command **
    cd /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1
    auth diradmin apple
    mcxset Users/phd1 com.apple.dock tilesize always -float 62.5
    mcxread <record path> [optArgs] [<appDomain> [<keyName>]]
    =========================================================
    Used to display existing values for MCX preference key(s).
    [optArgs]
    -v <mcxVersion>
    Specifies which version of the key should be retrieved. If this
    parameter is omitted, version 1 keys are searched for.
    -o <filePath>
    Specifies the output file where results should be written. If
    this parameter is omitted, results are written to stdout.
    -format <xml | plist | text>
    Specifies how the output should be formatted. If omitted, the
    default is 'text'.
    <appDomain>
    Specify the application domain you want to retrieve keys from. If
    this parameter is omitted or is equal to '=' then all application
    domains will be dumped for the specified record.
    <keyName>
    Specify the name of the key you want to retrieve. If this
    parameter is omitted or is equal to '=' then all keys will be
    displayed.
    Examples:
    mcxread /Users/mcx1 com.apple.dock autohide
    Displays the value of the 'autohide' key in the 'com.apple.dock' application domain
    mcxread /Users/mcx1 -format xml com.apple.dock =
    Displays, in XML format, all the keys in the 'com.apple.dock' application domain
    mcxread . -format plist = =
    Displays, in plist format, all keys for all application domains for the current record
    mcxset <record path> [optArgs] <appDomain> <keyName> [<mcxDomain> [<keyValue> [<UPK>]]]
    =======================================================================================
    Used to set values for a new or existing MCX preference key.
    [optArgs]
    -v <mcxVersion>
    Specifies the version of the key to set. If this parameter is omitted,
    version 1 keys will be created.
    <appDomain>
    Specify the application domain in which the key is to be set.
    <keyName>
    Specify the name of the key being set
    <mcxDomain>
    Specify the type of management to be applied to the key. See above for
    valid values. Additionally, if this parameter is missing or '.' then
    an existing key will be searched for and the existing management value
    will not be changed. Setting management to 'none' is the same as deleting
    the key (will remove management for that key in the specified record).
    <keyValue>
    Specify the new value for the specified key. Values can be specified using
    the same syntax as used by the 'defaults' command line tool. If the value
    parameter is omitted, then the existing value for the key will not be updated.
    <UPK>
    The (optional) value for the Union Policy Key. If present, the UPK must
    be specified as a dictionary. The valid keys for the dictionary include:
    mcxinput_keynames (single string or array of strings)
    mcxoutput_keyname (single string)
    mcxremoveduplicates (boolean)
    mcxunion_asdictionary (boolean)
    mcx_replace (boolean)
    You can specify 'input' as a shorthand for 'mcxinput_keynames'.
    You can specify 'output' as a shorthand for 'mcxoutput_keyname'.
    If either mcxinput_keynames or mcxoutput_keyname is omitted, the value
    of <keyName> will be used for the missing value(s).
    Examples:
    mcxset /Users/mcx1 com.apple.dock autohide always -bool 1
    Sets the 'autohide' key in the com.apple.dock domain to a value of
    TRUE with 'always' management.
    mcxset . com.apple.dock autohide once
    Moves the 'autohide' key to 'once' management, preserving the existing
    value of the key.
    mcxset . com.apple.dock autohide none
    Removes management of the autohide key in com.apple.dock domain for
    the current record.
    mcxset . com.apple.dock autohide . -bool 0
    Sets the value of autohide to FALSE, preserving the existing management level
    mcxset . com.apple.dock tilesize . <real>64.0</real>
    Sets the tilesize key to the floating point number 64.0
    Examples specifying UPKs:
    mcxset . com.apple.test testkey-Raw always '(1,2,3)' '{ input=testkey-Raw; output=testkey; mcxremoveduplicates=1; mcx_replace=1; mcxunion_asdictionary=0;}'
    mcxset . com.apple.test testkey-Raw always '{ keya=a; keyb=b; keyc=c; }' '{ output=testkey; mcxunion_asdictionary=1;}'
    mcxedit <record path> [optArgs] <appDomain> <keyPath> [<keyValue>]
    ==================================================================
    Used to update the value of an existing MCX preference key.
    [optArgs]
    -v <mcxVersion>
    Specifies the version of the key to set. If this parameter is omitted,
    version 1 keys will be edited.
    <appDomain>
    Specify the application domain in which the key is to be set.
    <keyPath>
    Specify the path to the EXISTING key to be edited.
    <keyValue>
    Specify the new value for the specified key path. Values can be specified using
    the same syntax as used by the 'defaults' command line tool. If the value
    parameter is omitted, then the key path will be deleted.
    NOTE: It is not permissable to delete an entire key using this command. To delete
    an entire key, use 'mcxset' and specify a management domain of 'none'.
    Examples:
    mcxedit . com.apple.dock autohide -bool 1
    Change the autohide key to TRUE, preserving current management setting
    mcxedit . com.apple.systemuiserver mount-controls:dvd '(authenticate, eject)'
    Sets the 'dvd' key within the 'mount-controls' dictionary to the array
    containing two strings: 'authenticate' and 'eject'
    mcxedit . com.apple.systemuiserver mount-controls:dvd <array><string>authenticate</string><string>eject</string></array>
    Same effect as previous example, just using xml syntax
    mcxedit . com.apple.systemuiserver mount-controls:dvd:1 deny
    Change the 2nd array element within the 'dvd' key of the 'mount-controls'
    dictionary to the string 'deny'
    mcxedit . com.apple.systemuiserver mount-controls:dvd
    Remove the 'dvd' key of the 'mount-controls' dictionary
    mcxdelete <record path> [optArgs] [<appDomain> [<keyName>]]
    ===========================================================
    Used to remove management of MCX preference key(s). This is equivalent to using
    the mcxset command with a 'mcxDomain' value of 'none'.
    [optArgs]
    -v <mcxVersion>
    Specifies the version of the key to delete. If this parameter is omitted,
    version 1 keys will be deleted.
    <appDomain>
    Specify the application domain in which the key is to be set. Omitting this
    parameter, or specifying '=' means all application domains will be processed.
    <keyName>
    Specify the name of the key to be deleted. Omitting this parameter, or
    specifying '=' means all keys in the application domain will be deleted.
    Examples:
    mcxdelete . com.apple.dock autohide
    No longer manage the 'autohide' Dock key.
    mcxdelete . com.apple.dock
    Delete management of all Dock-related keys.
    mcxdelete .
    Delete management of all keys for the current record.
    mcxexport <record path> [optArgs] [<appDomain> [<keyName>]]
    =========================================================
    Same functionality as the 'mcxread' command but produces output in a format that
    can later be imported using 'mcximport'. Usually you will also want to specify
    the -o optional argument to cause the output to be written to a file.
    Examples:
    mcxexport . -o /tmp/export.plist com.apple.dock
    mcximport <record path> [optArgs] <file path>
    =============================================
    Imports the keys/values previously exported using 'mcxexport'. Each key/value in
    the import file will be processed as if the data were passed to 'mcxset'. This
    means the data in the import file is added to the existing data in the record.
    [optArgs]
    -d
    Causes mcximport to delete any key found in the import file from the
    record. This is equivalent to calling mcxdelete for every key in the
    import file. The value of the key in the import file is ignored.
    <file path>
    Specify the location of the file containing the data to be imported.
    Examples:
    mcximport . /tmp/export.plist
    mcximport . -d /tmp/export.plist

  • MPEG-2 Playback vob file

    Ok I am a newby to video editing, never attempted it in my life. What I have is a DVD+RW, which I have a 40 min recording of from Sky. It was recorded via a DVD player/recorder that sits under the TV. The DVD plays on my laptop with DVD Player. I have, using Disk Utility, put a disc image of the DVD on the desktop.
    I wanted to edit the DVD (remove commercials), and make a professional looking DVD. I was hoping to make use of my giddily waiting creative tools, the iBook. I was planning on using iDVD and iMovie. What I seem to have discovered is that they are geared at movie clips recorded with cameras. I have QT pro.
    After a bit of research, I understand, that the files on the DVD are in something called .vob, which is a form of MPEG-2. When I click on the disc image a folder with two folders in opens. One folder is called "VIDEO_RM", in it are 5 files with extensions like; IFO, BUP & DAT. I have no idea what these are. The other folder is called "VIDEO_TS", in are 10 files. And in it are; 6 .VOB files, 2 .IFO files and 2 .BUP files.
    From what I have googled. I am supposed to install the MPEG-2 player for QT, and export the files to something that iMovie can read. From then on I must learn how to use iMovie 5 (HD, hard to find video tutorials for old software), and proceed to edit the video, then use iDVD to burn the video. Whether I have a DVD that can be watched on my DVD player just like "The Godfather" remains to be seen.
    Someone please guide this sinking ship in the right direction, if possible fix the hole. Sorry for the metaphor or analogy but I haven't the foggiest.

    From what I have googled. I am supposed to install the MPEG-2 player for QT, and export the files to something that iMovie can read.
    Is sounds like you have the basic concepts. Whether or not the Apple MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) is required depends on the specific work flow you opt to use. My personal preference would be to use MPEG Streamclip (free) for the conversion which does require installation of this component. FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), HandBrake (free), etc. would also work but do not include the specific features I tend to use on a daily basis. (E.g. Visual Hub would be better if you do a lot of conversions between Windows and Mac and HandBrake has limited output options for your goal.)
    Basically, all you do is install the MPEG-2 component and the MPEG Streamclip application. Since your DVD is not encrypted, simply copy the VIDEO_TS folder (or just the "title set" of VOBs you want) to your local hard drive. Once copied, Select the MPEG Streamclip "Open Files..." File menu option. A window will open allowing you to navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder content and select the VOBs you need. (Note: files that do not contain audio/video media will be "grayed" out here.) Shift-Click or Command-Click the file(s) you want and press the open button to bring them into the work/review area. If any timecode breaks are detected during the loading process, the program will inform you and ask if you want to fix them. (Even if it doesn't catch any breaks, it is usually a good idea to press Command-F to scan for/fix possible breaks.)
    At this point you can view your content, select segments for saving or deleting, and check volume levels, color saturation, brightness, contrast, etc. for first cut adjustments or simple leave this to whatever editor application your end using. In any case, when ready to convert your content, select the "Export to DV..." File option. DV content is editable in any Apple Editor application and the only thing you may have to worry about is segmenting output if using the very oldest versions of iMovie. Simple select the output (DV25, DVCPRO25, or DVCPRO50), "Standard" (NTSC or PAL), and aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9). As to the rest of the options here, the default values will normally work for you but you may wish to experiment with at a later time.
    Before actually exporting your file, it is usually a good idea to run a preview to make sure everything look okay. To do this, simply press the preview button. The preview is video only and only shows one "freeze" frame out of about every 5 seconds of content converted. When satisfied that all is working properly, press the "Make DV" button and provide file title/navigation information for storage and confirm the start of your conversion. Thats all there is to it in this case. When done, import the file to your editor and go to work.
