Dvd::rip using only 1 instead of 4 cores

Hello, fellow Archers!
I've installed dvd::rip today and started transcoding my DVD's... And I saw a problem: It only uses one core at a time. The processor (I guess that it's not the program, which does that) is swapping the core being used every few seconds, but I can only see one core being pushed to it's 100%. Can I (and - if so - how to do that) set it up to use all 4 cores? It should speed up the process.
I'm using it's default programs (mplayer, xine, etc.), although I'm using mplayer-vaapi. Is that the cause? Should I swap to default mplayer? Or maybe it's related to my system settings? Does it install all the programs to support 4 cores by default, or should I set something up?
Cheers!

  • Codec for QT play on Mac AND PC-- + IMovie edit? (DVD rip using MPEG STRCLP

Based on the helpful advice of this forum, I am ripping a bunch of DVD's of home movies into a large number of discrete .mov files that I can (1) import into IMOVIE for editing and (2) view directly and effortlessly using QT on both a Mac AND a PC (I want to send these files to others). Maintaining image quality is very important given the less than perfect MPEG 2 source material.
I am following the suggested process using MPEG STREAMCLIP, including trimming and light cutting of unwanted sections before creation of each file.
*My question is what is the best export process and settings for my situation?*. Given the less than ideal quality of the MPEG-2 source, I would like to avoid further degradation if possible. Choices:
    1. EXPORT to .mov using *AIC codec* -- clearly the best choice for IMOVIE editing and QT playback on a MAC -- but unable to playback using QT on a PC without buying/loading the AIC software. This is a problem since I want the ability to give the .mov files to others and allow them play on a PC without instructions or the hassle of a software download.
    2. EXPORT to .mov with *another Codec -- but which CODEC?* --which codec allows effortless playback with QT/ MAC and PC while retaining original MPEG-2 quality -- and allows for later editing in IMOVIE?
    3. *SAVE AS .mov* -- my understanding is that this copies the original MPEG-2 (after trimming and cuts) and eliminates transcoding. Is this accurate? If so, will it play effortlessly on a MAC and PC? Am I sacrificing anything when importing into IMOVIE (other than the need to transcode from MPEG-2 into AIC)
Thanks in advance for the help. I continue to be amazed at the complexity of choices for such a simple process.

Martin, I Exported my rip using MPEGstreamclip DV/DVCPRO-NTSC full quality, then exported QT Movie out of FC after editing a bit. Put it back to DVD using DVDSP and used Compressor due to tutorials I watched from Larry Jordon, saying I would get a better quality compression using compressor. I know you are probably scratching your head at this point saying, wait, FCE doesn't come with Compressor or DVDSP. At this time I'll have to admit, I have FCstudio but started out with Express and like the FCE forum better then the FC forum.
The setting in compressor I used are:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5

  • Using only Photos instead of iPhoto

After Upgrading to OS X 10.10.3 including the new Photos Mac App I don't need the iPhoto App anymore .
I only want to use the new Photos App from now .
What actions do I need to delete the "Old" iPhoto App without loosing my Pictures ?
( And keep using the new Photos ...)
    Thanks .
    PS
    I don't use iCloud Photo Library .
    iMac Late 2012
    OSX 10.10.3
Have an iPhone , iPad , Apple TV all sync with the same apple ID

You Photos are stored in the iPhoto Library, not in the iPhoto.app.  Deleting the iPhoto, app will not delete the photos in the library. So you could delete it, but it is very difficult to get it back, after it has been deleted, because Apple pulled it from the AppStore.
After Upgrading to OS X 10.10.3 including the new Photos Mac App I don't need the iPhoto App anymore .
I only want to use the new Photos App from now .
If you really want only to use Photos, and have migrated the iPhoto Library to Photos, you can delete the iPhoto.appa and the iPhoto Library. That will have no bad impact on Photos.  But wait a bit, before you do that, and make a full backup of your system and archive that backup, before you start deleting.
    The reason:
It is too soon, to abandon iPhoto completely and to uninstall it. You need to test Photos and the migrated library thoroughly - browse all photos and events, albums, title, GPS location, etc, before you can be sure, that the library migrated correctly.
You have to work for a while with photos, to be sure, that it has no bugs on your system.  The release is brand new, and the beta testing has just finished - there are probably still hidden bugs, that will only be visible later and may make it necessary to go back to Photos.
Keeping iPhoto and Photos installed does not need much space, even if it shows a large file size. Your Photos library is just linking to your iPhoto Library, so the photos have not been duplicated. P205 DVD recorder showing only 635 megs instead of 4.7 gigs. Seemed to have occurred suddenly and I'm not sure how to 'fix' it. TY

When you burned that DVD, was the session closed or was it setup for multiple sessions? because if it was closed it will only show the amount used. The rest of the space is wasted.

Hidden WinRE partition was deleted by mistake but I still got the original Recovery DVD for my A200.
Is it possible to completely recover VistaOS without the WinRE partition, using only Recovery DVD?

    Of course.
The Toshiba Recovery CD was designed to recover the notebook.
Using the recovery CD you will get the factory settings.
But note; the Toshiba recovery CD formats the whole HDD and erases the partitions from the HDD.

There is no such option/setting on an iPhone to determine this. Whether you can view the attachment has more to do with your connection, WiFi or cellular, and the size of the attachment than anything else. There will be a paperclip indicating the message includes an attachment regardless if downloaded with the message or not. When connected to the cellular network, if an attachment is below a designated size the attachment will be downloaded automatically. If over a certain size, you must select the attached file icon in the body of the message to download the attachment. The size limit varies by carrier/provider.

  • DVD rip to iPod on Windows

Im sorry, i have seen this asked before, but the only ones i saw were ways with mac programs. Can somebody give me a link or tell me a step by step way to rip my DVDs and then convert them to a iPod format that is completely free, and i can convert a whole movie without paying for a converter. Thanks.

well thank you for reading adn doing some searching.Luckily for mac users the process isnt as cumbersome adn troublesome for windows users. I have always used this software to convert my dvds to be played on the ipod and have had no troubles and no errors. here is the website for the software adn related info about it and a website on how to convert a DVD using this software.

  • Using only an External Drive

I bought an iomega external drive to hold my 900CD library on (160GB) so I would not use space on the internal drive. The problem is I keep ripping CD's and they keep going to the internal drive. Can anyone tell me how to use only the external drive for itunes and my ipod(30GB)?

See this link from MacMuse, follow his instructions EXACTLY & you should be good to go. Just think, once you get the EHD up & running, no more worries about losing your music due to a computer crash. The other thing I would recommend is a secondary backup such as burning data CD's or DVD's which is what I do. I only burn about once or twice a month now, but this is just extra insurance in case the EHD takes a hike for some reason.
    MacMuse, "Computer Crashed" #4, 11:49pm Feb 7, 2005
    EDIT:
I forgot, the one thing that was suggested to me when I put my EHD in is to regularly send backups of the .itl & .xml files which are the database files for your library, playlists, etc. to your EHD. I send copies of these 2 files to the EHD any time I add music, change playlists, etc. DO NOT MOVE the original files off your main HD, that is there "home." If you should happen to have bad luck & have a crash with these 2 files backed up, along with the iTunes music folder, you should be able to get iTunes up & running in a "jiffy".

  • What are the best DVD ripping settings to avoid a choppy QT performance?

I ripped some of my DVDs with Handbreak, and I put them on my PB 12" running 10.4.5 and Quicktime 7.0.4. The performance is really bad with H264 code, and acceptable with standard mpeg4 codec (I occasionally get some stuttering). Which of the following parameters (beside the codec) can improve the QT performance on slower computers?
    1) The size of the final QT file (will a 1GB QT file stutter more, compared to a 600MB file?)
    2) The 1-pass or 2-pass option (so far I've been using only the 2-pass option)
    3) The bitrate (will a 1000kbps get less chances to stutter than a 2000kbps)?
    Thanks!
    Powerbook g4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

If you're using any "ripping" software to convert DVD's to QuickTime formats you are at the mercy of the encoding (and the software that creates it).
If your Mac has trouble with the file your only options are to reduce the data rate or the movie dimensions.
I've done a few tests (using H.264) that yield satisfactory results on my Mac mini.
I edit the display dimensions (prior to export) to half size (640X480 becomes 320X240) and use the H.264 video codec (my Mac Mini can handle it) and then use QT Pro to display the file at double size (back to 640X480).
Quality does suffer but playback works even on my old G3 iMac.

  • Save Formats for DVDs for use on Computer

I'm using a pre-loaded DVD template to create a DVD with a Title menu, scene menu, etc.  Is there any option for me to save this format for use on my computer only?
Instead of burning this to a DVD, I'd like to save the final product as a file with the same function as the DVD (usable menu, skip to set scene markers, etc).  Does that make sense?
The idea is to not have to burn 10+ DVDs, but save these files to a flash drive and access them through a computer or TV.
    I'm using Premiere Elements 12.
    Thank you!

    Salvatij
Premiere Elements 12/12.1 on what computer operating system?
Assuming Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit for the moment and DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc....
    1. You could consider Publish+Share/webDVD which is really a flash file that comes with disc menu of your choice.
The saved folder from the process can be played back on the computer using Foxfire and Internet Explorer. I do not see you playing that back on TV.
    2. In Premiere Elements, if you export Timeline content to file saved to the computer hard drive, menus are not included.
Please review the above. I am think about this some more.
    Thanks.

  • Burning DVD-Rs using disk utility

I posted here about a year ago asking why I couldn't burn my 4.28-gig video files onto a 4.7-gig DVD-R. I got some explanations that DVD-Rs technically hold a bit less that 4.7 gigs and that sort of thing. But someone mentioned that I should use Disk Utility instead of dragging the files onto the DVD-R, and that worked.
Now I'm trying to copy a 4.47-gig file using Disk Utility. I think with various upgrades, the Disk Utility interface may have changed?? Whatever I did last year that worked so well and easily, it wasn't readily apparent this year. I made a disk image of the files per certain instructions I found, but it still said it wouldn't fit.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks very much --
    Christine

    << Remember 1Gb is simply 1024Mb. >>
    Oh no, not math!
I tried making a CD/DVD master from the DVD; using that option, I couldn't get to the size choices on my system. I still forged ahead, hoping for the best, but at the end of my efforts got an "invalid argument" message. (The disk isn't copy-protected or anything, incidentally.)
I have all the files copied to my desktop as well, and the initial thing I tried was making a disk image out of those. I did select the 4.7 gig DVD option at that point. On my desktop, the folder is 4.36 gigs, but the disk image wound up being 4.47 gigs.
Should I have selected "Read Only" instead of "DVD/CD Master," and should "Encryption" be "None" (default) or "AES-128" (recommended)?
Thanks so much for all your help!

  • Video Arrangment on Hard Drive + DVD Ripping Software + Internet Sharing

    Hello,
I relatively new to MAC OS, and got my iMac a couple of months ago. I have arranged my music under iTunes and pics in iPhoto, but haven't really found a great solution to storing my videos on the hard drive. I like iMovie to create my projects, but not as a storage/viewing platform. I right now have a combination on movies stored in iTunes and on the movies folder in my Hard Drive as well as some small movies in iPhoto, but wanted to have everything arranged in one location, similar to my music/pictures. Let me know what ways others store their videos on their Mac?
Also, looking for a good DVD ripping software that I can use so I can take my old DVD projects I made on my last computer and have permenant storage on my Hard Drive? I've used Handbrake, but wasn't sure about the quality.
Also, is there a way you recommend sharing videos online. I have some large videos (3gb, 30 min long), so it won't fit on YouTube. MobileMe is only 20gb large so it won't suit my needs (plus it seems too expensive!)
    Thanks for your help!

Apps to organise your video are thin to the ground. I've enjoyed using yFlicks (http://manytricks.com/yflicks/) (for other options search on MacUpdate. But in the end I reverted to using iTunes, where I class home movies as Music Videos, as I don't have any of those.
Ripping DVD is a tender subject on this forum. Under US law, and that's where this forum is based, it's illegal to even discuss ways of circumventing DRM protection. (Free Speech, right?) And as ripping a DVD might wander into such country it's best to search for solution on Google than here. And yes, I know, you're ripping your own material.
If your movies are 3 gig and only 30 minds long you need to compress them for sharing. Remember, at that size, the folks on the other end will end up downloading the 3 gigs to see the movie. In video it's common to talk of Production formats and Delivery Formats. From what you describe, your movie is in a production format - good for editing but huge. Compression will not harm the quality of the finished movie but will give you a version of a size more suited for delivery to a viewer (but not much good for editing). For comparison's sake, you can download a full length HD or near HD Hollywood movie online at less than 1 gig.

  • DVD Ripping  help needed

Well, I looked through the topics for the application, "handbrake", and downloaded it via one of the links that one of the members gave. Anyhow, it wouldn't install. I'm assuming it's only for mac users? Anyhow, is there a version that's for windows or does anyone know of another good DVD ripping application that is iPod friendly? I heard that handbrake can rip and convert ripped DVD's into the correct format for ipod. Also, if it can rip it into a format that can be converted via videora, then that would be fine as well.

After several tries with other apps mention, I stumbled on "PQ DVD to Pod" software and it has worked great for me on my XP PC. Download the free trial version. It will limit you to a 5-10 minute record time unless you buy, but you can at least try it out before spending money. It is easy to use. Does DVDs and most other vid files as well.
I like that it will easily let you take portions of a DVD (like concert videos) and nicely pull out just the ones you want. Downside: unless it's a long DVD, you have to manually stop the recording so have to watch when near completion.
No perfect solutions yet it seems.....

  • Do I need a dvd rip software to transfer clips over to Adobe

I have an odd question. I want to use Adobe Premiere Pro to make a special video for a friend but I need to take out clips from a few movie's and shows for this to happen. I didn't see anything on Adobe that can help so my guess is to use DVD ripping software like 'Handbrake' to rip what I need and then transfer the files to Adobe. Is this correct or is there another way?

    miken
    Thanks for the update.
Are we still discussing ripping DVD video files from a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc? If we are.....
    When you
I tried loading a movie to Adobe Premiere Elements 12 through the ADD FILE but when I tried it took awhile to load and it looked like through the 'preview' video would play but no audio, and it looked like it didn't load the film
Did you specifically insert your DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc into the burner tray
Open Premiere Elements 12/12.1 to its Expert workspace
Used  Add Media/"DVD camera and computer drive"/Video Importer....In the Video Importer dialog was the Source set to the drive into which the DVD disc was inserted?
If so, did you see there at least the  thumbnail for VTS_01_1.VOB file.
You should be using only the DVD video files...starting with VTS_01_1.VOB. Depending on the duration of the content on the disc, you may have a series of DVD video files. But, for now
finding the VTS_01_1.VOB and determining its video and audio quality is the priority.
As for the Easycap Capture USB 2.0...I have never used that device. And, I do not believe it is for the purpose of ripping DVD video files from a DVD disc.
I suspect its description is for DV data capture via USB into a software Capture Window. A firewire, not USB, connection works in Premiere Elements process of  DV and HDV capture into the Premiere Elements Capture Window. Version 13 no longer has this feature.
Please review to make sure that we are together on the details and the goals at this point.
    Thanks.

  • Dvd::rip transcode/libdvdread error [SOLVED]

Job 'Process title #15' failed with error message:
Job 'Rip - title #15' failed with error message:
It seems that transcode ripping stopped short.
The movie has 182817 frames, but only 22300
were ripped. This is most likely a problem with your
transcode/libdvdread installation, resp. a problem with
    this specific DVD.
The wiki makes it seem so easy to use dvd::rip! I put my disc in, started a new project, began the rip and got this. As far as I can tell, my system is up to date and has all the deps for dvd::rip in good order. I've never changed a thing with transcode (I didn't even know I had it installed before I got this error). What is wrong?
P.s. Is there a way to tell if a DVD is encrypted? This would be helpful to me since dvd::rip and its kin don't work with encrypted movies.
