DVD Ripping help needed

Well, I looked through the topics for the application, "handbrake", and downloaded it via one of the links that one of the members gave. Anyhow, it wouldn't install. I'm assuming it's only for mac users? Anyhow, is there a version that's for windows or does anyone know of another good DVD ripping application that is iPod friendly? I heard that handbrake can rip and convert ripped DVD's into the correct format for ipod. Also, if it can rip it into a format that can be converted via videora, then that would be fine as well.

After several tries with other apps mention, I stumbled on "PQ DVD to Pod" software and it has worked great for me on my XP PC. Download the free trial version. It will limit you to a 5-10 minute record time unless you buy, but you can at least try it out before spending money. It is easy to use. Does DVDs and most other vid files as well.
I like that it will easily let you take portions of a DVD (like concert videos) and nicely pull out just the ones you want. Downside: unless it's a long DVD, you have to manually stop the recording so have to watch when near completion.
No perfect solutions yet it seems.....

DVD Burning Help Needed

I have burned all our VHS home movies onto DVDs and now I'd like to make copies of the DVDs for family members but I don't want to have to do it through the tv again (takes too long). I would like to be able to copy my dvd to a dvd on my pc but I do not have a clue what I need to do this and would appreciate any help/suggestions.

I don't know about "I would like to be able to copy my dvd to a dvd on my pc," but to do it on the Mac, you take the original DVD and make a Disk Image from it using Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility. Insert original DVD. When it appear in the sidebar, select it. Be sure to select the volume (disk) that appears below the optical drive in the sidebar. Then from the menu bar, +File -> New -> Disk Image from "<name of disk>"+. In the +Save As+ dialog, name the disk image file and pick a place to save it. Note: The disk image file name is different from the name of the disk itself.
It will take some time to create the disk image file from a DVD (because it is usually large). Once it completes, the disk image file will appear in the Disk Utility sidebar under the horizontal line. Select it. Eject the original DVD. Then click the Burn button in the Tool Bar. You will be prompted to insert a DVD writable disc into the optical drive. Click the Burn button to reproduce the disk image to the new disc.
Once you have the disk image file of a DVD, you can burn it as many times as you want.

Commercial DVD production: Help needed (Newbee)

I am currently making a DVD for my brothers band that they will sell. The music is theirs so no copyright issues. The images also. I have made home DVD's for use before but not had to have them "replicated" (I think thats the right term). What do I need to do?
So far I don't think we'll need it double layer (4.7GB should be enough) so is it enough for me to make a normal DVD-R as usual or do I have to specify some other format. What do the DVD makers need? What about DVD surface art or cover? Sorry to have some many questions but I just do not know about the last bit of making these.

Different houses might have different requirements, so you should find out from whomever you are going to use...
Generally though, from what I understand, you can duplicate or replicate from a burned DVD-R. If you want the copy guard stuff, then you HAVE to deliver on DLT tape.
For cover art--(the DVD box, right?), you'll want a graphic that is 300 DPI for best quality printing. AS for the label of the DVD itself, if they do silk screen, I have no idea about whay they need. It would seem to me that a silk screen doesn't need a 300 DPI imahe because it is a "low rez" print, but when I had some t shirts made, the company wanted 300 dpi art... got me on that one:)

.srt file are SubRip subtitles I think - try using this utility (Subtitler)

This can convert .srt to .stl which SP will handle quite happily (and thanks to Hal for reminding me about this little utility). It works as I've used it recently to convert some .srt subs myself
BTW: I don't think SP can handle .srt files natively which is why you can't get them to import

Do I need a dvd rip software to transfer clips over to Adobe

I have an odd question. I want to use Adobe Premiere Pro to make a special video for a friend but I need to take out clips from a few movie's and shows for this to happen. I didn't see anything on Adobe that can help so my guess is to use DVD ripping software like 'Handbrake' to rip what I need and then transfer the files to Adobe. Is this correct or is there another way?

Used Add Media/"DVD camera and computer drive"/Video Importer....In the Video Importer dialog was the Source set to the drive into which the DVD disc was inserted?
If so, did you see there at least the thumbnail for VTS_01_1.VOB file.
You should be using only the DVD video files...starting with VTS_01_1.VOB. Depending on the duration of the content on the disc, you may have a series of DVD video files. But, for now
finding the VTS_01_1.VOB and determining its video and audio quality is the priority.
As for the Easycap Capture USB 2.0...I have never used that device. And, I do not believe it is for the purpose of ripping DVD video files from a DVD disc.
I suspect its description is for DV data capture via USB into a software Capture Window. A firewire, not USB, connection works in Premiere Elements process of DV and HDV capture into the Premiere Elements Capture Window. Version 13 no longer has this feature.
Please review to make sure that we are together on the details and the goals at this point.

Ask the store for a local Macintosh Users Group / Club... maybe someone there can help you. You might check pawn shops in the area for a machine that has a full set of disks. Apple will sell/mail you a set. I don't know of anyplace to legitimately download them... For what its worth any commercial (e.g. full retail version) install of OS X on disk should work for your machine.

Video Arrangment on Hard Drive + DVD Ripping Software + Internet Sharing

I relatively new to MAC OS, and got my iMac a couple of months ago. I have arranged my music under iTunes and pics in iPhoto, but haven't really found a great solution to storing my videos on the hard drive. I like iMovie to create my projects, but not as a storage/viewing platform. I right now have a combination on movies stored in iTunes and on the movies folder in my Hard Drive as well as some small movies in iPhoto, but wanted to have everything arranged in one location, similar to my music/pictures. Let me know what ways others store their videos on their Mac?
Also, looking for a good DVD ripping software that I can use so I can take my old DVD projects I made on my last computer and have permenant storage on my Hard Drive? I've used Handbrake, but wasn't sure about the quality.
Also, is there a way you recommend sharing videos online. I have some large videos (3gb, 30 min long), so it won't fit on YouTube. MobileMe is only 20gb large so it won't suit my needs (plus it seems too expensive!)

Apps to organise your video are thin to the ground. I've enjoyed using yFlicks (http://manytricks.com/yflicks/) (for other options search on MacUpdate. But in the end I reverted to using iTunes, where I class home movies as Music Videos, as I don't have any of those.
Ripping DVD is a tender subject on this forum. Under US law, and that's where this forum is based, it's illegal to even discuss ways of circumventing DRM protection. (Free Speech, right?) And as ripping a DVD might wander into such country it's best to search for solution on Google than here. And yes, I know, you're ripping your own material.
If your movies are 3 gig and only 30 minds long you need to compress them for sharing. Remember, at that size, the folks on the other end will end up downloading the 3 gigs to see the movie. In video it's common to talk of Production formats and Delivery Formats. From what you describe, your movie is in a production format - good for editing but huge. Compression will not harm the quality of the finished movie but will give you a version of a size more suited for delivery to a viewer (but not much good for editing). For comparison's sake, you can download a full length HD or near HD Hollywood movie online at less than 1 gig.

DVD::RIP Stops Responding [SOLVED]

Howdy,
I have just started to use DVD::RIP to try and backup some of my DVDs to XViD/DiVX. However, everytime I try to rip one, DVD::RIP it seems to stop responding while it is trying to generate a preview image of the ripped movie. The application can still be moved around within, tabs changed, but the ripping area items remain greyed out. The status bar at the bottom stops updating, however the log files continue to update with the amount of time the process has been running. According to the website, "This usually takes a few seconds, unless you're in the on-the-fly or DVD image mode, where this may need a minute." I am not in either of the above modes, I am using the application suggested RIP to Hard Drive mode. I have waited several times up to 15 minutes for this process to complete without any change. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out? Or point me to a better solution for DVD ripping and transcoding. Thanks.

I can't help you solve your problem with DVD::Rip, but I'd suggest you give HandBrake a try. It is a really easy to use command line tool for ripping and encoding DVDs and is by far the fastest DVD-ripper I've found. Quality is very good as well and it does stuff like detect cropping values automatically and very reliable. There's a precompiled binary for Linux on their forums if you fear to compile it on your own. You could also try Avidemux which a friend of mine suggested. He says it's the best tool for ripping DVDs, but I haven't tried it myself since I'm really satisfied with handbrake.
There's also Thoggen, Winki The Ripper, OGMRip and probably many more others. But they can't compare to Handbrake IMHO.

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

Help needed on installation of Oracle 9i EE on Sun Solaris 8. The problem I met was: we followed the installation guide from the documentation. And we selected the choice "install software only". After it was done successfully, we run Database Configuration Assistant utility to create a database instance. But finally it always tried to create the instance at the root directory ( / ) which doesn't have enough space and then failed. The case was that we have set the enviroment parameters: $ORACLE_BASE = /export/mydata, $ORACLE_HOME = /export/apps/oracle9i. That means it should be installed at /export/mydata, but it didn't. Any help or advice are welcome. Thanks.

IMac - external DVD drive crashes Aimersoft DVD Ripping program

I am using Aimersoft DVD ripping software (legal version) to make mp4 files out of DVDs. It works fine on the IMac internal DVD drive. But when I try and use an external DVD drive using FW800/400 conversion cable, Aimersoft program keeps crashing.
Any thoughts?

Here are some alternative choices for playing DVDs.
If the LaCie drive USB or FW?
Tiger is serious improvement over 10.1 (although you may need some more RAM) I'm not sure whether it will cure the DVD player issue? If you still have space (9Gb) on your 40Gb drive you could use Mac the Ripper, and then open the VIDEO_TS file in DVD Player.

Unfortunately this is very difficult because the top half of your post, your really the only one that can answer what the setup should be. The adjustments are made based on the acoustics of your room and how everything sounds noone can really give you info on it because every house, and room has different acoustics. The walls, insulation, carpet or bare floors, basement or main floor are just some examples of what can make a difference in sound reproduction.   By the way NHT (Now Hear This) are excellent speakers. For bass and treble, the music I listen too requires a high treble content so I usually have it at 7 out of 10 but my bass is at 4 out of 10.   The sub base should be fine where it is.
Did your receiver come with an Audessy mic for calibration. I would use that for a basic setup and go from there I am not sure if on your unit it will do frequecy but I think it did.
Your volume settings look fine again personal preference there is right or wrong.
For you listening mode Preset you should have an auto setting I am at work so it may take a coule of hours for me to get back to you as I have to go through your manual and see what you would set it up with so please bare with me. I will list the info as I read it so it may not be in the order you have it.
I will have to make a second post since I can't go back and edit this one.
