DVD-ROM Feature (DVD@ccess)

I recently finished creating a DL DVD and in one of the videos I put a DVD@cces marker to connect to a website. I followed the instructions in many tutorials and books to a tee. I burned the DVD and tried it in my Apple DVD player (after enabling DVD@ccess web links in the preferences) and it doesn't work.
Any thoughts?
One more concern:
Assuming I fix the problem, will this marker work on PC DVD players?

In principle, the idea of DVD@ccess or creating enhanced content DVDs is rather cool. In practice, the experience was never anything but variable. Whilst DVD@ccess seemed to work for Macs, and some PCs the result was never reliable on a PC. Alternative solutions on PCs, including Sonic's eDVD, have also since been abandoned. There is no single standards based system for creating interactive links and that is what is needed for all discs to work.
If you want to put a microsite on a DVD then you can, and you can use a menu screen to inform your viewers that it is there. All that is missing is the ability to click a link in a menu and run the index file. You might get it working for some people, but not for all... but if you include it on a disc then at least there is something there for them to see.
The other thing to consider is that if you do include some HTML pages on your disc, when they are played in an internet enabled PC you can rely on the usual html links to call up further content not based on the DVD.

DVD ROM feature not working

I really don't know what I am doing wrong.. can someone please help?
I am trying to attach a pdf file with the DVD ROM feature.
I go to the outline tab and in the inspector I check DVD-ROM content..
then choose my folder with my pdf doc.
It is in a folder named "ROM"
The location comes up and it says it finds it..and that the doc took up 28MB of space....
I connect the DVD-ROM content with DVD@ccess.. entering in
file///DVDName/FolderName/filename
exctally as is.. but when I burn it, it doesn't work...
I am following everything to the T, but it doesn't work...
If I switch out the DVD-ROM name and put in a weblink it works perfectly.
I know that I am typing everything correctly spacing and spellng wise...
One interesting thing.. when i start the build and burn and turn on the DVD@access feature.. I choose the same path to the file, but it says that it isn't taking any space...
Also after burning the DVD .. it doesn't load up the Pdf file, but when I open the DVD manually.. the pdf file is there.. and when I open the file manually it does load up fine..
So what am I doing wrong so it doesn't load up when I click the button??
Hope this makes sense.. already wasted about 8 DVDs

Check that you are adding the document extension as well. The pathname is pretty much the main area where mistakes are made when linking to files on the disc. Is the file actually on the finished DVD? Open it in the finder and look for it there.
The system works in a quirky way (IMO) - place your PDF into a folder on your desktop called 'ROM' and place that folder into a different folder called 'disc content' (or whatever). In DVDSP, use the property inspector to point to the outer folder (the 'disc content' folder) and you will get a nice neat 'ROM' folder (plus contents) on your final disc.
If you are getting the file onto the burned disc, then the problem is in your URL. If you are NOT getting the file to the disc, then the problem is in the way you are setting this all up.
Check the URL is valid:
file:///discname/foldername/filename.extension
So, in the above example, if the file called 'document.pdf' is used on a disc is called 'Extras' the URL would be:
file:///Extras/ROM/document.pdf
Note that colon in the URL after the word 'file'.
Remember that I suggest placing the document into a folder called 'ROM'. You can, of course, use any other name you wish as long as it is a valid name.

I have a DVD-Rom and DVD-Video card for Powerbook and need advice

I acquired 2 accessory components for a G3 series powerbook. I have a dual G4 so have no use for them. There is a M4743 DVD-Rom for Powerbook and a DVD-Video PC card for G3 series Powerbook family M5163. There is also a software CD. I would like to sell them but I really don’t how to explain what this stuff does. I tried Ebay and did not find any matches. Does this make a DVD upgrade for a particular Powerbook? Is something else required? Is Ebay the best place to sell? Any idea what this stuff is worth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The above DVD PC card is not Apple's but there were two third-party vendors who also offered a DVD kit...VST and MCE. They all served the same purpose and will all be priced similarly.
Both PC card and optical drive are required to play DVD movies on the Wallstreet, plus Apple DVD Player is only supported when booted to 9.x, not 10.x.
I really cannot give you a fair price to ask; the above hardware prices are probably high but you will get an idea.

Director projects on DVD ROM and DVD video

Anyway, back to your problem - as already noted there really
isn't an
elegant way of solving it! You quite literally have to whack
everything into
one folder - when it comes to hybrid DVD-Videos there's no
'nice partitions'
as we have with hybrid CD-ROM I'm afraid!
The route I took was to develop the DVD-Video and add the
Director Windows
projector and its gubbings via the ROM content folder [used
Encore - but
DVDSP isn't too far apart].
Also within this DVD-ROM folder lay a Mac disc image [DMG] of
our Director
Mac projector with it's associated Xtras, etc. - with enough
time on my
hands I could easily have added asset sharing but time was
tight to say the
least and I knew I had lots and lots of space on the DVD so
basically
packaged all the assets together with the projector within
the
aforementioned Mac disc image. I also added a PDF + text
document at the DVD
root level explaining to Mac users that they would have to
mount the
included Mac disc image to gain access to the data side of
the disc.
As it's been pointed out already it isn't pretty and it isn't
elegant,
but... it works!! I was also advised by our replicator's that
this is the
"safest" way to go. Yes you could try the Mac partitions
route but there
really is NO guarantee that all standalone DVD players are
capable of
reading the final disc - I wasted numerous coasters with such
ideas and it
was very, VERY hit and miss!
If you've a wide DVD-Video collection take a look around at
some of the
titles that hold ROM content as well and you'll find that the
big studios
also produce their DVD's in the same fashion, for example
[off the top of my
head] the Matrix trilogy are produced in this way.

Doesn't iBook G3 DVD-ROM read DVD-RW?

I tried to move data from pc to ibook using DVD-RW media. t.
But my ibook DVD doesn't read it but just spits it out. My iBook G3 500 DVD-rom doesn't read DVD-RW? DVD is MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8176. Or should I upgrade firmware? Thanks.

Which software are you using to write the DVD-RW on the PC?
The problem probably arises as the when the PC writes the DVD-R it uses a standard (ISO 966) which the iBook can read.
When writing the DVD-RW often PC software will format the disk so it acts like a floppy disk. However this proprietary format will only be readable on the PC with the disc writing software, the disc is unreadable, not just on Macs, but also on PCs as well.
How you correct this depends on the software you are using.
I would change the DVD-RW settings or create a disk image using the DVD burning software and then burn that ISO 9660 image to the DVD-RW, this should then be readable by the iBook.

T2000 DVD-ROM ejecting DVD

Hello,
I am having this little annoying problem. I am installing Sol 10 OS onto the brand new T2000 but every time I reboot or reset the server the install DVD gets ejected and I have to re-insert it. I don't remember having this problem on any other servers with Solaris installed. Is there a setting to change this behavior?

DVD-ROM created in DVDSP does not show files in Windows

Hello,
I created a DVD-ROM in DVD Studio Pro 4 with the purpose of having a working DVD and also have additional files in that same disk. It all works fine in a Mac; I can watch the DVD, and I can also access the additional files (one .pdf and one .mp4) from the Finder. The DVD also works fine in any DVD player.
However, when I put the disk on a Windows computer, I can only watch the DVD movie, but the additional files DO NOT appear in Windows Explorer. If I open the dvd drive on a Windows computer, there's only the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, and nothing else.
Does anybody have an idea of what's going on here? PLEASE HELP.

This is an m2v file playing on the windows machine. Of course I would have preferred to run with a mac, but the end display software does not run on a Mac.
Windows Media Player, using the commonly(?) installed Klite Codec Pack which includes and mpeg2 decoder, shows it as having a length of 6:38.
VLC will play it as well, but shows not timecode on a windows machine.
The whole movie is there and I can scrub until the end in WMP. In fact Windows Media Player will play it to the end. And as it hits the end, the timecode should show 10:00 minutes, but it does not, it shows 6:38. On a Mac it shows 10:00 minutes
The end movie is to play in software (Windows Samsung's Magic Info Pro) that loops when the end time code is reached. Which it thinks is 6:38. The only problem is that it loops at 6:38 of the original movie which is not the end of the movie.
Sounds like a relativistic spacetime problem.
Before I get slammed for asking Windows related questions -- I put this in the compressor forum to see if there was some compressor setting I was not enabling, or some tweak that I could do to make an m2v file windows friendly.

Sorry to hear your issue. Let's isolate it by following these troubleshooting steps:
Test the Optical Drive in BIOS, and reset it - Turn off the computer -> press the power button and immediately, tap the F2 key repeatedly. Once in BIOS, go to Boot tab. Look for Boot Sequence and check if the Optical Drive is listed. If not then its already hardware issue. If DVD is listed, try to reset BIOS, go to Exit tab -> Get Default Values -> hit Enter ->Save the changes and Exit.
Power Cycle - Remove the battery and all peripherals -> press and hold the power button for 5 seconds OR, if the battery is not removable, remove all peripherals-> look for a battery off button on the bottom of the laptop -> push the button for 5 seconds -> you may use a safety pin if you see a pinhole.
Run Windows update and Vaio update.
You may also check for the latest drivers and software from Sony's support website based on your location or from where you purchased the unit.

PE 7 DVD rom access problem

After installation og Premiere elements 7, my DVD rom and DVD burner drive could not be used anymore. Error "cannot load or damaged driver code 39"
Deinstallation did not helped only with window repairpoint to point before installation of Premiere worked, with lost information.
System:
Windows XP home SP3
Dual processor pentium4 2.6 GHz
1 G RAM
Toshiba DVD rom
Nec DVD RW
What causes this problem? And how can I avoid this with installting Premiere 7?

Meantime, have you tried refreshing the driver?
Right-click My Computer, select Properties, then Hardware, then Device Manager. Open the CD/DVD devices listing and right-click and uninstall the hardware.
Windows will automatically install fresh ones in a few minutes.
Also, be sure to go to Windows Update and press the Custom button. This will give you access to Microsoft's non-critical updates, which you can then install manually.

Making DVD's not DVD-R's

so netflix and a few other places require DVD's not DVD-R's. What's the difference? Thanks!

When you said in your first reply:

It would be more accurate to say that a DVD-R is it's own format, as Eric stated, and certainly can never be a DVD-Video - even if authored properly. The DVD Forum is very clear that the DVD-Video logo cannot be placed on a DVD-R format disc, because they are not the same format (you can put the DVD-R logo on a DVD-R disc). Mainly this is because these two optical formats are completely different in structure, and because only replicated discs can achieve the reliability in players (which you mentioned) required of a product bearing the DVD-Video logo - the main mass distribution format targeting consumers. That's the short of the story.
And when you said in your second reply:
"A DVD-Video is a DVD disc that contains data that conforms to the DVD-Video standard. Otherwise is wouldn't play in a DVD player. It does not matter whether the disc is burned or replicated."
Again, if the disc was burned, it's not a DVD-Video. It's one of the recordable formats (DVD+R/W is an optical format not recognized by the DVD Forum, but with similar characteristics. It's leadin can contain the DVD_ROM book type bit setting, that can trick players into thinking a replicated disc has been stuck in it, however).
And a DVD-Video disc is a replicated / manufactured disc that has certain lead-in data which a DVD-R can never emulate, because it's lead-in area is glossed over in manufacturing (to prevent bit for bit copying of manufactured DVDs) with set data in its lead-in area. So it's crucial, whether or not a disc has been burned or replicated. Again, only replicated discs can bear the DVD-Video logo.
And when you said:

As I (and Eric) mentioned, DVD-R is a format, with books specified for it by the DVD Forum. DVD+RW is also a format, but not specified by the DVD Forum. But yes, DVD-R and DVD+RW and one you forgot - DVD-ROM (replicated DVD-Video) are also all optical media.

I cannot see why DVD @CCESS and DVD-ROM content are not working properly

I am very new to DSP, and I know I am missing a piece of the jigsaw, but I do not know what it is. I used a tutorial from creative cow to try and make the @CCEESS function work, but no dice… for now at least. When I did a build/format (to the HDD) everything went fine. I mounted the image, and I could see the DVD @CCESS folder and the DVD–ROM content on the DVD image. When I went to play the image, the button did not work. The content I am trying to use with @CCESS is a PDF file.

As Eric said - DVD@ccess is really not that useful. It was a way to get documents like PDFs to automatically launch in the application (like Acrobat) when watching a DVD on a computer. Since they can't launch on a set top player the technology was already limited. Then the whole issue of getting it to work on a PC arose - it simply wasn't reliable. I managed to produce one disc that was replicated with @ccess links, but I knew the parameters for it's use in advance and managed to get it to work. It doesn't work on modern machines.
For a while there was a Sonic app which was much better at getting this sort of thing to work, but you had to work on a OC to set it up. Sonic pulled the app shortly after I bought it (sigh) and never replaced it. The fact is, automating document launches and web links is actually pretty tricky on a DVD, the results were variable and it never really enhanced your discs like you wanted to think it would!
If all you want to do is include a PDF file on the disc, and alert viewers to it being there, you only need to use the ROM content functions not @ccess, and you can use a menu screen to give instructions to people to let them know how to find it.

DVD-ROM folder shows up in Mac only

I'm using DVDSP 4.12, and this topic has nothing to do with DVD@ccess.
These two folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS, are standard feature in every DVD video disc.
DVDSP will also create a 3rd folder, "JACKET_P", if you include a Jacket Picture.
Finally, DVDSP will create another folder in a name of your choice when you use the "DVD-ROM" function. I usually name mine "DVD_ROM", and put the album artworks jpgs & pdfs and perhaps some .mp4 files in it.
When I mount the DVD in a Mac, all the above folders (and their contents) show up in Finder.
However, opening the same DVD in Windows XP's Explorer, only the first two folders show up. The other two are totally invisible.
Does anyone knows why this is so? Isn't the "DVD-ROM' content function of DVDSP cross platform? How do I make the DVD_ROM folder accessible for its content in a Windows environment?
Any help is appreciated.
(If it matters, I always enable the "Joliet Extension Support". I also create a image .dmg file when Formatting in DVDSP, and subsequently burn the .dmg in Toast 8.)

you should be using the data tab but select the UDF format to create a DVD

DVD ROM query for embedding Powerpoint

Hi, I am receiving conflicting advice on a job I have to output on Tuesday for a client. I have a 20 min NTSC video thats complete.
The client has stated that they now need to have 2 powerpoint presentations, some pdfs and some jpgs added to the DVD.
My local applestore advised me that I will have to use the DVDROM function in SP and that is the only way that the viewers can use the powerpoint presentation as intended (i.e not just as a slide show, but with foward and back facility etc). They say that the video and the other windows files will show up as a folder on the disk and the Video file will play in all DVD players, but the windows files won't. They also say that I cannot put the items on the DVD menu for access that way?
My DVD replication house, have said that the video file, if put on DVDROM will play in Pc's and Macs but will NOT play in DVD players as they don't recognise the files as playable?
They added that there is a player you can use that will embed a windows powerpoint file and that the PP presention opens up in a viewer that plays and allows full functionality of the presention buttons.
Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this in the short timescales I have.
I don't mind telling the client that the disk will only be viewable in PCs and not DVD players if I have to, but am still wondering, what happens then if someone puts the disk in a mac? how will the Powerpoint presentaion work, or wont it. Any items in the DVD ROM files should be thought of generally as being data files that can be accessed as need by the appropriate program. In other words if there is a Photoshop File (not JPEG, TIF but actual PSD file) and the user does not have Photoshop or other application on the Computer which opens PSD files, then the user cannot use the PSD file. If it is a PowrerPoint project and the user does not have PowerPoint and you have not made a Projector (think that is the term, the self contained playback thing even if a user does not have PowerPoint) then they will not be able to use the file. Anything in the PowerPoint file is subject to how your create it in PowerPoint.

Some players can play back various formats, MPs, AVIs and the rest, but that is not playing back a DVD. The DVD is a different thing. As to the Windows files, not sure what you are saying there, but if they are files that only a Windows machine (as oppossed to a Mac) can read then a Windows machine would be needed.
You can use things like @ccess (you can search for the threads on that one), but in a nutshell, not very reliable and it is often easier to just have a menu telling people to look at the folder on the DVD for extra items. Nothing in the DVD-ROM folder will be playable on a DVD Player, you will need a computer.

RIght. You need to seperate two concepts. One is a DVD you rent from Blockbuster, which is the thing that you pop into a player hooked up to your TV and start playing and the second is extra material on the DVD (DVD-ROM content) which require a computer.

See above regarding the PowerPoint Projector concept. It should run on a Mac subject to the same issues described above (software maybe needed to open files, etc.) Alos cheeck with your replicator, there is usually a break on mastering charges at certain levels - often 1,000 units. May be about the same price.

Linking to web & DVD Rom through separate menus

I am working on a project and want to link to both website and DVD rom content through using separate menus and timeout functions. I have checked off both DVD@access and set my DVD Rom content but cannot access. Do I need a script and if so what are the commands?

The way it works is that as soon as you open the sub menu it should try to launch the @ccess link, rather than waiting to time out. You could always add a third menu in there, time-out the submenu and go to the third (which will, of course, look identical) so that the link then launches right away. Time that third menu out after 1 second and return back to the submenu.
You really need to get the location of the ROM content correct in the property inspector. It isn't clear where to point things, certainly. What have you got set up?
The DVD@ccess link must be in the right format, and the file you point at must have the three letter extension. I'm pretty sure I set up a smaple project you can download for all this - have a look here:
