DVD-Rs not reading on Sony DW-Q28A

Hi eveyone,
I've got a Dual 2Ghz G5 running 10.4.8 with a Sony DW-Q28a Superdrive that is refusing to mount a couple of Verbatim DVD-R 8x data discs from our photo archive.
The discs will spin for a bit, then be regarded by OS X as blank discs. However, this system will mount other Verbatim DVD-R 8x data discs just fine, and other G4s and G5s have no problem opening these problem discs. In fact, these discs were probably originally burned on a very similar Sony Superdrive.
I've been digging around the forum for a while, and seen a number of posts about the Sony drives having issues burning/reading, but no suggestions other than switching media or getting a new drive. Does anyone have any definitive information on the problems with these Sony drives?

I have the same problem with DVD-RW disc. The DVD-RW discs burned on other G5 with Hitachi superdrive are recognised as blank discs on my G5, which has sony's superdrive. However, these discs can be played on a stand alone DVD player. So I think sony's superdrive has some compatibility problem but I don't know how to fix this.

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)

Has 256mb memory
Bought a used Lacie 1394 Firewire DVR External.
Was able to burn DVD’s and CD’s with Toast 6 Light.
Cannot find the “DVD Player” on the hard drive.
It will read data DVD.
eMac will not read any movies burnt or bought.
I was told I probably need more memory?
Thought running IDVD would fix the problem.
No Soap.
This machine was giving external modem problems before Tiger was installed.
Before we spend more money or just get ride of the eMac.

This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.

HP dv6 DVD drive not reading DVD's

Hi, my HP dv6 is currently running windows 7 and for some reason it will not read DVD's. It will read CD's just fine no matter what's on them. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver and find other sollutions and so far nothing has worked. Please help.

Please give us the full model number....dv6-xxxx? An optical drive has more than one laser and sometimes the CD laser is fine but the DVD laser is bad and the only way to fix that is to replace the drive. Are you still under warranty? The only other thing you can try is a dvd laser cleaner disk like this:

This would be a long shot but might work.

Burned DVD issues in DVD player not reading or music issues stop and start

I'm a PC converted to a MAC (less than a month) and love it so far. I have been able to create and burn a DVD. The problem I'm having is one DVD player will not read the DVD (Hitachi). The other DVD player will play it, but the music stops and starts when it transitions (twirl) to another picture (Panasonic DVD/VHS combo). I'm using a DVD R Memorex. Neither one of the player are new. Would love to use this to make the Grandparent's a DVD of the grandchildren from birth to present as Christmas present. What do I need to use or do to be able to watch on any DVD player as well as the computers?

Welcome to apple discussions. Try using 99 photos / less to avoid issues with audio fades / drops. Also do a search for Memorex on this forum and you'll see it's not the first choice of dvd's for most users. Instead try Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden and burn at 4x from a disc image for best results. Wish you luck and feel free to post back with results or any further questions.

Dvd drives not reading

Our dvd drive on our Power Mac 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core intel.The drive is an Optiarc dvd rw ad-717a: sometimes will not read inserted discs. These discs work ok when tried on our I mac. Other discs work fine. This has occurred with discs that have bee writen in the drive as well as supplied discs.Help would be appreciated.

Not Sure what you exactly mean but if the Mac can't read the CDs it has written then there is a problem with the optical drive itself. If the CD is detected on teh computer but will not play it might be something to do with the dvd player app on your mac. Try to download VLC for you mac and see if it can read content (assuming it is a video or something). Cheers!

I have a Satellite Pro C650-EZ1250D and a month ago my CD/DVD player stop reading media. I just was on the MicroSoft Windows fixz it website and downloaded two different fixit files and after running them both I received the same message:

DVD Drive not reading CD's

Hi Everyone,
I have noticed that my DVD Drive is unable to read any of my CD's but all my DVD's are read perfectly by the drive. I have enabled AHCI and installed Intel Rapid Storage drivers post that. What seems to be the problem? Is it because of AHCI? Are there anyone who faces the same thing after enabling AHCI?
I cant deny the fact that my read write and boot performance have improved a lot after enabling AHCI. Valuable suggestions and feedback really appreciated.

The easiest and simplest thing to do would be to try another DVD drive that you know works. That would answer your questions very quickly. I have seen DVD drives that would read and/or write DVD's and not CD's or the other way around.

Envy dvd drive not reading media. Any ideas?

The dvd/bluray drive is not reading any media (CD, DVD or Bluray). Is there a fix, or is hardware related?

I have the same condition. Envy 17" i7 is 18 months old and very light use. Maybe 4 hours on dvd/cd drive. Just put a movie in and drive is stuttering, picture is a garbelling collage, but audio is mostly clear. the last dvd, a training video that was fine 3 months ago is somewhat corrupt and the drive is doing it's stuttering intermitently. What to do? Is there a test disk and/or analytic software that can determine the issue? The Drive is an HP BDDVDRW CA30P. The driver files are up to date according to the MS on-board search tool.

Not sure if a cleaner disc would help, or if there is a defect in the
drive which may cause a disc to be re/jected. If the drive were an
internal one, a reset may apply; such as NVRAM. However due
to this being an external one, I don't know if that'd do anything.
You may have to look on the maker's site to see if there are any
support links or suggestions on how to make it work, if not Apple.

Could be this reset may help the optical drive work correctly.
But your mileage may vary, depending on other circumstance.

MSI DVD 8216M Not Reading Disks

I purchased an MSI DVD (8216M) from NewEgg a week ago. So far I have run into a few DVDs that this drive will not play.
One in particular is a brand new DVD I bought yesterday. At first it would not play the disk it at all. I updated the firmware, and it will now read the DVD. I can access the menu, and play the special features, but if I go to scene selection and select a scene, or play the movie, it fails to read the disk.

When did this start happening? Did you load any apps or software just before this began?

DVD drive not reading after Flip4Mac install

My DVD drive was reading commercial movie DVDs just fine until I installed the Flip4Mac new version. I uninstalled Flip4Mac but it did not resolve the problem. OSX.8.2 Any suggestions?

You can try resetting the SMC and pram. If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc, your lens might be dirty. I doubt very seriousley that installing Flip4Mac had anything to do with it. Slot loading SuperDrives aren't the heartiest animals around.
To resettle SMC

Laptops with a battery you can remove
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Newer Mac portables with a battery you don't remove
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Imac dvd is not reading

Our Imac DVD has become VERY picky about what dvd it will read. Is this hardware, software or what? The same movie dvd will play on my macbook or a dvd player.

DVD's not working on Sony dvd player

I just bought some TDK DVD-R 16x. I burned a DVD with my iMac G4 in iDVD. I tried to play it in my Sony DVD player and it said it was was not allowed because there were limitations or something. Can I fix this or do I need new DVDs??

Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the
DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...

This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may
encounter. Once the disc image is created,
double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that
should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn
the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually,
you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which
OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in
Applications folder), click on the virtual disc
(maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the
Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your
SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn
icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R
preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait.
Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor
over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to
work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower
for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to
click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This
may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk
to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD.
Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD
Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and
open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio
disks.)

I'm reading through the forums trying to figure why I am not able to play a DVD burned in iDVD that is "R", but the "RW" ones work fine.
Your post is very helpful and I've looked at the links suggested too. I just want to make sure I'm understanding. I've copied the movie to my hard drive using iMovie and then created an iDVD project. I then need to use either Disk Utility or Toast to make the DVD. I do not need to use the "burn" feature in iDVD. Is that correct?
I would appreciate any other suggestions. Maybe there is something else in the settings or preferences I need to adjust.
