DVD+RW disk is not recognised

I have a Toshiba SA40-231, Model No. PSA40E-08DLT-EN which has a DVD ROM/R/RW. I have been trying to back up some stuff using a DVD+RW 4x. However, the drive fails to recognise the DVD. What am I doing wrong?

Hello Gerry
Your unit has just DVD-R/RW drive and it can not handle with +R or +RW medias.

  • Disk Utility not recognising Pioneer DVR-111D

I retrofitted this drive into my G4. I'm new to iDVD but have problems.
iDVD does not recognise this drive and keeps opening the original (CD only burning) drive and I can see no way to get it to open the Pioneer drive
iMovie was quite happy to save my movie project to a DVD using this drive.
Disk Utility sees both drives but when I put in a new DVD disc (I've tried several) it doesn't even spin the drive up and so I can't burn a disk image saved by iDVD.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

    Do you have the MDD?
Did you use Cable Select for both? I assume you have both optical drives on same IDE bus.

  • Why does my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" not recognise DVD-R discs?

This "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B" drive on my machine does not recognise DVD disks. I then remove the DVD disks and load them into another drive on the same machine where they are recognised immediately.
As the dual drive setup is very handy I'd like to have both DVDs working again.
I have been tried to update the firmware for my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" but it fails to complete and this message appears:  "The update did not complete successfully, (9994)"
I would appreciate any help with this issue.

  • IMac disk drive not recognising discs

    Hi everyone,
I have a late 2009 iMac (21.5in 3.06Ghz) which is out of warentee. Recently, the disk drive has began not recognising disks, mainly CD's, while it still burns to CD-R's and plays most DVD's. I have reset the SMC and completed all other Apple troubleshooting steps with no luck. I phoned a repair specialist who told me that replacing it would be very expensive (£100-£200 I can't remember exactly) for what it is. I really do not want to pay this.
Does anyone have any other ideas, or has anyone suffered similar problems and managed to fix it? All help would be appreciated... easy points here!
    Regards,
    Nathan

    Suggestions...
Make sure that you don't insert CDs with stuck-on labels.  The internal tolerances are tight.
If the drive proves to be in need of repair or replacement, it may be more cost effective to buy an external USB-connected drive.

  • Disk utility not recognising WD 1TB HDD

I've been in the apple store about 4 times this last week or so, my mac was running fine, but it needed a new track pad, a new charger, new logic board (because of the diplayport) and a new base because the feet had came off. I picked it up the day after it was booked in, it worked in the shop, i took it home and got the flashing folder icon. I went back down, and the guy said it was because the hdd (it had a WD scorpio blue 500GB in) had failed, so i bought a new one (the WD scorpio blue 1TB) and it wasn't recognised. So i went back down today, and saw a different genius who tested my mac then tested the hdd's in another mac, the 500gb had failed but the 1TB was recognised in another mac, so she changed the hdd cable and showed me it worked.... rebooted.... still working.... so we turned it off and i took it home. Now, i've just turned it on, and same result.... not recognised, any ideas? I'm using a SL 10.6.3 disk to get disk utility up, i'm wondering if it'll just be the 10.6.6 that will work?

  • Satellite A100-773: DVD/CD drive does not recognise CDs

    Hello Friends,
    I have Sattelite A100-773.
When I turned it on today it did not recognise any CDs anymore. It however recognises DVDs and also can Burn CDs with Nero.
As soon as I put in a CD it says (in German) something like "Access denied, Function not allowed".
It is a mystery to me what has happened. Until yesterday it was perfect. Now the same CDs (and I have tried 20) wouldn' work anymore.
I have tried system recovery to a previous point in time, but it does not help. In the Hardware manager tells me that everything is allright.
Do you have any idea what it can be?
    Thanks a lot
    Ognian

    Hi
In such case its not easy to say why it happens.
Generally if the drive is not able to read any medias either the hardware malfunctions or the CD or DVD is not compatible and supported.
But let us hope that the hardware is not corrupted.
Try to remove the drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After the reboot the OS should recognise the drive again and should load the driver. Then you could try to test the drive again.
I found also a very great Microsoft document about:
How to troubleshoot issues that occur when you write data to a CD-R or CD-RW optical disc in Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324129
    and this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/
The other possibility is to use the Recovery CD to reinstall the OS.

  • BURN DVD Using Disk Utility not Bootable

I have downloaded TechTool Deluxe for Intel and PPC. Following instructions in Disk Utility, I made/Burned DVD's of each .dmg for Power PC & Intel based computers.
Neither DVD will boot on computers using OS 10.5.6. The PPC DVD has OS 10.4.4 and the Intel has OS 10.4.5. I have tried restart using System Preferences, the "C" key, and "Option".
Can someone tell me how to boot from the DVD's or tell me what I may have done incorrectly?
    Bud

There must be some misunderstanding here.
It is the TechTool CD that must boot. If an operating system was installed on the CD via Disk Utility Burn then it should start up on that CD. It does not, even though it will show up in System Preferences/Startup Disk and "Options". I see it as a matter of how Apple installs the .dmg onto the CD as a legitimate startup disk.
All my computers work fine with 10.5.6 or lesser for older machines. The purpose of Techtools for me is to assure that they continue to do so.
The reason for a second G5 is that the first one had an LED light "on" on the logic board making it somewhat inoperable. The second machine comes clean. 10.5.X was installed nicely.

  • Application copied from disk image not recognised as correct arch by Finder

    Hi,
occasionally, when I download a disk image ".dmg" that contains an application bundle ".app", I can run the application from the Finder by double-clicking on the icon of the application on the disk image, but when I copy the application to my harddisk, either with the Finder or with "cp -rP", and try to start the copy, the Finder gives me "You can't open the application xyz because it is not supported on this architecture".
However the size of the application bundle, as measured with "du(1)" did not change, and sure enough the copy works just fine when I directly launch the application binary from the shell... The latest example of this behaviour was with the supertuxkart-0.6.1a-full-osx.dmg that I just downloaded.
Anybody seen something similar and/or know what causes this strange behaviour?

I have had a similar problem simply making a copy of a .app file. I spoke with Apple support about it and they said this is the desired behaviour when the application is not a universal application.
You can check by opening the info window for the application and seeing if it says Universal next to Application in the Kind field.
If it says Universal, it should copy without problem, if not, then it won't. Apple support wasn't able to give me a clear reason as to why this is, though.

  • Optical Disk Drive not recognised!

Hi, having a nightmare problem with my macbook- any help would be much appreciated!
I'm using a new (late 2010) macbook pro, and today it suddenly forgot it has a disk drive. It's no longer showing up in Disk Utility, and the eject button does nothing (there's a CD in there).
I was in the middle of burning a CD in iTunes, which crashed. I force quit, restarted, then had to troubleshoot as iTunes wouldn't open- saying I hadn't permission to open the library. I deleted the library file, then started a new one, which solved the iTunes problem and allowed me to open the program. Then I noticed the problem with the disk drive, and nothing I've tried has helped.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Typical- I've been at this all day and as soon as I post here the problem gets solved.
For the sake of anyone who finds this and is having the same problem- the strangest solution worked:
I re-booted, and on startup rapidly pressed the eject button until the CD ejected.
Now the drive is recognised- phew.
Weird- I really didn't think button-bashing would prove to be the solution...

  • How do I create staging area after having copied Apps R12.1.1 DVD to disk

    Hi!
I have copied all DVDs for Apps R12 to our filer. Now I would want to create the staging area using autostage.pl, but it only stages the startCD, then it asks me to insert the DVd named "Rdbms Disk1", but the DVD is already on the filer. Giving it the path to the copied DVd on disk does not work...
I don't have access to the physical machines to mount the DVDs since the servers are in a hosted data center...
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Helmut

    Hi,
I never tried this before, but you may try to pass the root directory name where all the media files were copied and see if it works. If this does not help, then I believe you need to create the stage area directory from the DVD-ROM drive.

  • Disk Utility to format DVD-RAM disk

I have swapped out my Combo drive and installed an LG GSA-4163b so that I can burn, write to, DVD-RAM disks.
I have installed Patchburn which now allows me to burn CD's and all manner of DVD's but DVD-RAM disks will not mount.
DVD-RAM disk is recognized by Disk Utility but I cannot figure out how to make Disk Utility format the DVD-RAM disk. How do I do this.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi Douglas,
    should work pretty straight forward:
    * Open Disk Utility
    * Select the disc in the column on the left
    * click Erase (select Quick Erase if you don't want to zero out the disk)
    * Click Erase to start the process

  • Thinkpad L520 CD/DVD drive does not recognise or write to disks

Hi all. I hope as a newbie that I'm posting in the right area and not on a topic already covered. I've had my L520 for over a year now and have not previously needed to burn stuff to disk, so I do not know if my problem is new or old.
Essentially the drive recognises disks when they are inserted and accurately displays files already on the disk, but it gives available space as nil regardless of disk or existing file size. Additionally if a blank disk is inserted it will say that the disk cannot be read and to try formatting. These are standard preformatted disks I'm using. Please help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Written and finalised disks do not appear to have any capacity left, it is the way the CD file system works.
As for the empty disks, they are just empty, not pre-formatted. It seems to me you need a disk-burning application like Ashampoo Burning Studio Free or CDBurnerXP, which are free for personal use...

  • Superdrive not recognising DVD

It seems I'm in a similar boat as several others in this forum. Have an eMac OSX10.3.9 with superdrive and have been burning and playing movies with no problems. In the last couple of months it will not recognise ANY DVD at all - including DVDs I have created myself and commercial movies that I have been able to previously read.
I have no probs reading CDs.
In every case after inserting a DVD it comes up with a message "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read."
I have gone through the forum and taken up suggestions including:
    updating firmware: software indicated no update required;
    resetting NVRAM;
    using CD lens cleaner
using Path Burn – software indicated no patch required
I've noticed there's been several postings over the last couple of months regarding this or similar probs with DVD. Is it anything to do with recent upgrades? Hope this inspires further troubleshooting - I'm pulling my hair out! Or have I missed the posting with the magical solution?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   800MHz, 78mb SDRAM, Superdrive

    Hi Paula
Apparently different wavelengths are used to read DVDs and CDs. I found a lot of stuff out by reading other postings on this site, plus some extra bits from the response to this posting.
Meantime, I upgraded to 10.4.8 to no avail. Then a friend recommended booting in Safe Mode and lo and behold, the offending DVDs were read. Unfortunately, because this mode uses limited extensions, it wouldn't actually play those that were movies, but at least I could get some data from some. The DVDs also played when I booted in OS9.
They also recommended creating a new user in OSX, which I did but had the same problem. Which tends to make me believe there is some offending extension, rather than a cleaning issue - a bit of a nightmare to sort out!
May just opt for a new drive - reluctantly.
    Cheers
    Mrs Dynamic

  • Some DVD's were not recognised by my DVD ROM

    Hari bol,
my DVD ROM SR-8174 (Matshita), Driver 1.3.5, did not read or recognise the data of some DVD's I need to play.
No one could help me since today. Does anyone know were the problem is and if there is a chance to solve it, for example by updating the driver........?
    Thank you
    Sascha

Use System Profiler and see what it says about your DVD drive. It should (if it is like later versions) tell what kind of disks the drive can handle. It will probably read dvd -R but maybe not dvd +R or either kind of RW.
My wallstreet could not read burned a CD used for software distribution. I had to read it on another machine and transfer it using a Zip disk.

  • I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

For some reason OS X disks (whatever edition or flavors) that are supplied with Apple products only seem to contain a limited knowledge of available hard drives on the market at the time of thier publishing. This (rather opportunistically) creates a "Best Before" stale-OS X-software-copy situation where upgrading to or replacing a defective internal SATA hard drive with a newer, better or larger one is a largely hit and miss affair.
If you buy the latest and greatest disk drive available for any older Mac you are likely to run into unresolvable problems making a clean re-install of your own, old edition or flavor of OS X onto any newer or larger hard drive since the OEM (gray) "OS X Install Disks" that Apple supply with retail products seem to contain only time-sensitive lists/mapings of then-known target drives that the Drive Management Tool in the then-published old "Installer Software" will support.
Presumably new (colorful "X") retail versions of OS X (10.whatever.whatever) also contain time-limited Installers with limited knowledge of and adaptability to/compatability with a limited number of old hard drives then kicking-around on the market.
This is especially a problem nowadays since the countless "puny old" hard drives that have been on the market are largely obsolete in a few months time, as manufacturers continue to produce larger and cheaper units, discontinuing older puny products... So if your drive fails you need an exact old (or similar familial) replacement drive for your "backup copy of OS X" to do a fresh, clean OS X re-install. Otherwise you need to purchase a new retail version of OS X, since yours is now effectively obsolete. Purchasing an old, puny drive to re-install your version.flavor of OS X to avoid buying a new version of OS X is a rather false economy.
If you still have a working old hard drive with your old polluted 10.version.flavor of OS X still working on it you apparently must clone it with Time Machine or the newest version of Disk Utility (disk image copying) to most newer, larger drives, and a clean reinstall to such new hard drives is not possible.
