Dvd+rw-format & growisofs

Gday folks,
Im having some dramas with burning to a DVDRW.
growisofs -Z /dev/scd0 -r -J /home/fukawi1/asdf
Works fine with a DVDR, or virgin DVDRW.
The trouble comes in with:
$ dvd+rw-format -blank /dev/scd0
* BD/DVD±RW/-RAM format utility by <[email protected]>, version 7.1.
* 4.7GB DVD-RW media in Sequential mode detected.
* blanking 99.8%
This never actually reaches 100%, sometimes stops at 20-30%, often 98-99.9%, and then growisofs gives me:
:-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=5h/ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK]: Input/output error
:-( attempt to re-run with -dvd-compat -dvd-compat to engage DAO or apply full blanking procedure
:-( write failed: Input/output error
using -dvd-compat as the output suggested provides, the same error.
Google tells me it appears to be a generic error that isnt particularly helpful...
Thanks in advance

Hi! You're wasting your time trying to make a dvd as the startup disk. The minimum install for 10.3 Panther was about 6 gigs and the regular install for 10.5 takes up about 12 gigs so using even a double layer dvd won't work. It was possible in 10.3 but it took several minutes to load the system and the performance was terrible. What kind of machine are you using and what kind of install disc are you trying to install from? Complete the install process?....not sure what you're trying to say there. Tom

  • How do I copy a DVD -R format disc on an imac that has only one drive?

Hi - I have a 61 minute long DVD-R single layer DVD that I want to copy in an IMAC using my apple class subsciption (so I'll do it in an apple store). Can this be done? Do I Just bring in a blank DVD -4? What kind of IMAC or other mac does this and what apple software does it use??
(At home I have an IBOOK using leopard but the only software on this one is imovie 2008 so I don't know if this will work).
Any help offered would be great! Lisa

HI Steve - well I am stuck. The drive I have on the macbook I'm using at home is a combo drive and here are the stats Firmware Revision: GA0K
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
So, does this mean it will not burn any kind of dvd? I bought blank dvd -R format (Fuji film made these) and when I put the blank into the combo drive it just spit it out when I got to the IMAGE BURN part of the apple instructions. Sorry to be so dumb but if my little macbook will not burn a dvd -R, if someone will tell me what kind of apple computer WILL - then I will do it in an apple class in the apple store since they have one of everything!!!
THANKS GUYS I sure appreciate any and all help! Lisa

  • Is DVD 9 format compatible with MacBook Pro?

I want to purchase a DVD off of Amazon, but the product description says it's a long-format "DVD 9" which is intended for TV-top DVD player, and it is not compatable wtih all computers' DVD players. Will the DVD 9 format work on my MacBook Pro's DVD player?

"DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered. This media is called DVD-R9, DVD-R DL, DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media."
    Source: http://www.videohelp.com/dvd/
Dual Layer discs have been supported since at least 2005.  However, if the disc is a home brew disc, it may not be as possible to read it, if it was burnt at a higher speed than your player can read.  Commercial discs tend to be more readable.

  • DVD-9 format

I need to author a DVD that will be put to DVD-9 format for replication. I do not have a DLT drive for mastering. These are the alternative instructions from the duplication house for DVD Studio. Can this be done in EncoreDVD 2.0? I don't have Encore DVD installed on my workstation yet... so I am just trying to think ahead. Thanks
    Using DVD Studio Pro:
1.) Once project is open, go to "build & format"
2.) Under the "general' tab selct output device to "hard drive" and "ouput format" to "DDP 2.00"
    3.) Select destination for files
4.) There should be a "Layer 0" and "Layer 1" folder now.
5.) Using "Toast", start a new "DVD-ROM (UDF)" project
6.) Drag and drop newly created "Layer 0" folder to Toast window. Name disc "Layer0"
    7.) Burn DVD
    8) Repeat steps 5-7 only this time use the Layer 1 folder (disc name should be "Layer1").

Normally, you would add the contents of each Layer's folder to the ROOT of the DVD-ROM, not in a "Layer x" folder.
This way, the Eclipse verification system will "see" each DVD as a DDP image file, exactly as it would with DLT tapes.
From EncoreDVD 2.0, I have - in the past - output as a folder to the HDD, and imported the folder into GPME, creating the DDP images to HDD from there. I do not know if you can do this in Encore directly to 2 folders - I will have a look at a backed up project & post back.
In all honestly, GEAR Pro ME is a superb addition to anyone working on a PC based system and is well worth the $400 it costs. There is a 30 day trial version on their website

This would make a wonderful EncoreDVD 3 feature request though.

Guys, I been in the business working on PC and MAC for years. So I am not green at this, I was looking for some kind of option to get past the boot loader..  Which is failing.
I know how to boot into these modes.. Done tons of research before posting and couldn't find anything.
It will not go into  Internet Recovery, or any thing else.  I hear the sound .. then that is it.. I get nothing else..
I have tried clearing the NVRAM which is Option + Command + P + R
    Still nothing..
So I thought I would try here to see if maybe there was some trick out there someone might know of that would work.

  • Converting DVD Player format to QuickTime

How do you import a DVD into iMovie. When I try inserting my DVD (which is in regular DVD Player format), I can't get the iMovie to recognize the files. I'm assuming that I need to convert the DVD files to QuickTime or something, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Can someone help me PLEASE?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Wow, you're a life saver...I really needed to figure that out...DVDxDV works like a charm!

  • DVD+R Format Status

I know that Apple decided to disable macs the ability to read DVDR/CDR formats. Does anyone know if there is a way to go around this yet? I had heard rumors that Apple would at some point be enabling this format for mac users to use on their macs. Does anyone have a status on that....does the new Leopard read DVD+R formats? Or anyone know of a way that a mac will read this format?

DVD+R has been supported at least since OS X 10.3.9.
Many times certain formats are not supported by the drive itself or by how its driver was written.
    Leopard, depending on the drive, supports CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL and newly added DVD-R DL.

  • IDVD PROJECTS -  DVD-R - Formatting

1 Is there any way to preserve all of the screen formatting done after you import a project from FCE. Every time i tweak a video in fce and the n export it to a .mov file - I have ot waste a whole bunch of time re-importing it to IDVD redoing all my menus redoing all the chapters etc etc --- IS there any way i can import a new version of a .MOV into IDVD, and maintain he dvd formatting while replacing the content ?
2 WHy is it better to burn using lower speed and on a DVD-R format in a MAC environment.
3 How can i convert a .img file to a format that titanium would eat?

    1. There is a known bug in iDVD that precludes you from making any edits to a movie already in your iDVD project, if the project contains chapter markers.
The result is that all chapters default to the same one. There is no 'fix' for this--you must create a new iDVD project. Even if you see the message that iDVD recognizes that you have made changes (assets have been modified) and asks if you want the changes incorporates into the project, it does not do it properly.
If you'd like to have the same settings in your new iDVD project, you can use 'Grab' to take screen shots of your iDVD project menus/submenus and the Inspector settings for each of them.
If you have a movie without chapter markers in an iDVD project, you may be able to edit the movie and have the changes made in iDVD without problems.
    2. It is better to use the lower burn speed to reduce burn errors.
    3. Mount the .img image. You should see the TS folders, audio and video. Follow these steps:

  • TS2570 This evening I installed a new internal hard drive in my Mac notebook as recommended by the Apple Store.  The Mac notebook was an older model that was purchased through Ebay and didn't come with a start-up DVD.  Where can I get a DVD to format my M

Can anyone please advise me as to how to obtain the correct DVD to re-format my new hard drive?  I had taken my computer to the nearest Apple store when I first discovered the problem with the gray screen, and was advised to purchase a new hard drive over the Internet for my computer since it was over 5 years old.  The Apple associate never mentioned anything about needing the original disc to finish the installation.  Now I've invested money in this new disc as well as the time taken to install it, and I still don't have a working Mac notebook.  How can I fix this problem without a lot of additional cost.  This computer had been my son's originally, and he can not locate the DVD that came with this Mac.  Please help!!!

You can contact Apple Customer Support at 800-767-2775 to replace your install disc. You may be charged for shipping and handling.
You will need the serial number for your Mac to do so.

  • DVD Supported Formats for T61p (6459)

What DVD formats are compatible with the T61p (6459)?
    Thank you,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Are you asking what media is readable/writeable in a T61 DVD drive, or what DVD drives are compatible?
There were a couple of drive options for the T61, near as I can tell, but the full-on DVD drive was a 41N5643.  Here's the spec page for it: ThinkPad DVD Ultrabay Slim Burner - Overview
I didn't find your model 6459 in the old tabook, but all the other models using a DVD read/write drive seemed to use the 41N5643.
Maybe that helps, if I've understood your question.
[edit] Mis-read your model #, sorry.  Another look at that old tabook shows the same drive for the T61p.  FYI that old book is over here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ltwbook.pdf

  • DVD  universal format on Windows

    Hi,
I prepared a DVD using Maintosh Universal format. I have sent this to a friend in Canada and he says he cannot play it on his Windows XP pro with SP 2. I have tried on my PC with Windows media Player but it also say not compatable. It will play on any DVD player however.
What does one have to add in order to play this on a PC please. I did try downloading Quicktime but it did not come up a contender to play it!
    Can anyone help please
    David
    G5 2.5 dual 3.5G Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   23" screen Crossfire external

The problem could be two main things: the format in which it is saved in or the encoding. Windows will hardly ever decode Mac products, especially if they are in a Mac format. There are some solutions to some of the compatability issues between the two OS but not many.
The encoding is another issue. Guys in the US and Canada use NTSC encoding. The UK and most other European places use PAL encoding. Because your friend cannot play the DVD on his XP it is possible that his DVD player on his computer is a European one or even worse... (I can't really say this cause I am British) ...one from the UK. The European DVD players will play PAL B/G these are the usual PAL formats. The UK has to be difficult and it came up with it's own PAL format, PAL I. NTSC DVDs will NOT play on PAL DVD players. PAL DVDs will NOT play on NTSC DVD players. I have come across issues where PAL I DVDs will not play on PAL B/G DVD players.
Now your DVD should play (as you said) on all DVD players - however they are external DVD players, not on a PC or Mac. So basically, if it is an encoding issue (PAL or NTSC) then your friend will not be able to play the DVD on his computer. If it is a format issue, then there may be some possible way around it, but my advise is to just play the DVD on a DVD player through his TV.

  • Help for converting .mov HD 1080i to HD DVD 1080i format to play on my DVD player

    HI,
I have downloaded HD 1080i movie clip from iTunes .
The Video Clip is a .mov file.  I can play this file on my iMac , but i need to play this file on my DVD player.
My DVD PLAYER  do not support the .mov file .  I need some help to convert the .mov file to a DVD format.
I have tried some free application that converts any format of video to required format. But the converted DVD format is down graded to 480p.
I need the same 1080i format DVD format when it is converted.
Please suggest the Application which can convert the .mov file to DVD in 1080i
    Thanks in advance

    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

DVD Video discs are always standard definition -- 720x480 on NTSC or 720x576 on PAL, otherwise they don't conform to the strict DVD Video specification and won't play in a DVD player.
If you want HD, you have to make a Blu-Ray disc. You need specialized software for that such as Toast 11 Titanium or Adobe Encore (part of the CS5 or CS6 collection, not sold separately) and a Blu-Ray burner. Of course, you will also need a Blu-Ray player connected to your HD TV.

  • Converting personal DVDs to format to play on Iphone - how?

I have some personal DVDs created from digital movies I've taken with my camcorder. I would like to put these movies into a format that I can watch on my Ipod and would prefer a GNU, free or shareware utility if one is avialable. I am completely new to the Apple/Ipod/Iphone world and thank you for any help you can offer.
    -Calvin

I use two pieces of software that will let you copy any DVD into a format (.mp4) that will play on the iPhone or in iTunes. This seems buggy on Windows Vista, so I use my laptop with XP and it works great.
DVDFab HD Decrypter will pull the info off the DVD and put it in a directory on your computer. This takes about an hour. You can get this program at www.dvdfab.com.
XviD4PSP is the second program I use that takes the extracted data and creates the .mp4 file. This can take 12 or more hours to process, so I usually run it over night. You can get this program at www.winnydows.com.
A 1-1/2 hour movie will end up being about 700meg, which isn't too bad and it looks great on the iPhone. Once the process is done simply open the file in iTunes to add it to your library and then synch it with your phone.
